By Jason Rody Afte the fist night at the Gey Roots Cente, I think we should change the name fom SGR" (shot goup ide) to Fun Night at the GRC. A small goup came out to ou fist night at the GRC and what fun we had. Just ask Jen Wadell about he solo beakaway in the ganny ing lap! It s petty funny watching a goup of cyclists spinning thei legs like mad tying to catch someone! Having a closed cicuit to ide on allowed us to play a couple of games to get people comfotable with iding in a goup. Also, if you e not comfotable in the goup, with no cas to woy about, you can just move off to one side! The nights at the GRC ae not meant to be hamme sessions fo only the fastest and most expeienced ides, but they ae good fo any level of cyclist. These nights ae fo eveyone. If you would like to cone bette, lean how to stay in the daft, maybe just find out what dafting is all about, come on out to the next "SGR" o "Fun" night and have some fun leaning to ide you bike bette. Be sue to mak June 7th on you calendas as the next night at the Gey Roots Cente. 2 Outspoken By Tevo Stokes I just eceived the fom Tom, eminding us of the June newslette deadline. "I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by." (Douglas Adams) Newslette - Communications As Tom also indicated, we ae concened that eithe ou s ae not eaching eveyone, o that the Outspoken newslette doesn t have vey much appeal. If you haven t aleady done so, please fill out the suvey. This will help us gauge whethe the s ae going astay, if the newslette is simply edundant o if my statistics ae wong. Thee is a link to the suvey in the that announced this newslette. Cambidge Tou de Gand The tenth Tou de Gand eceational bike ide is on Sunday June 10th this yea. Thee ae 160 K, 100 K and shote options. The outes take you on quiet, olling county oads aound Cambidge, Blai Village and Guelph. It s always vey well oganized with aid stations, good signage and efeshments. Last yea six o seven OSCC membes wee thee. The poceeds go to the Cambidge Bikeway Netwok to pomote cycling in Cambidge. If you ente one of you favouite outes, please let me know and I ll link to it. The Landis Heaing What a soap opea! A cout appointed tanslato had to be eplaced because he confused jounée and heue. Then thee was a theatening phone call to Geg LeMond fom Uncle Ron who tuned out to be Landis manage. He blamed it on thee bees and ange but was fied. Floyd woe a yellow tie evey day, except the day when LeMond testified. That day he was all in black. A suspended po Joe Papp explained how easy it was to dope without being detected, and contay to Landis team s testimony, claimed that testosteone has a majo effect within 30 minutes. Up to that point it wasn t looking good fo Floyd. Then, afte the USADA coss examined one of Landis expets and cast doubts on his abilities, the witness poduced a lette offeing him a position as head of the WADA-accedited lab at UCLA. The Landis team went on to pesent two moe expets who expessed doubts ove the doping esults. P.S. Is Anybody Out Thee, Out Thee, Out Thee? By Tom Hakala As Tevo said in his "Ramble" we (the edito's) ae a bit peplexed as to how many of you ae inteested in these wods. Tevo has a bunch of data collecting gizmos at his disposal and what they ae showing is that two weeks afte he announced that the newslette has been posted, only 33 people botheed to download it. To top that off, he could also tell that a numbe of those 33 people wee not local. In othe wods, the numbe dopped even lowe as fa as club membes downloading the newslette. Now we have to take into account that many membes ae families o at least couples and they most likely would only download once. It comes down to whethe we ae poviding a sevice to the club membes o ae we like the tee falling in the foest that nobody notices. Though I enjoy witing and putting togethe this ag, I could just as well be iding my bike, caulking the windows o moving plants aound the gaden as pe the whims of my wife. Co-oganize, Bill Haley, called me the othe night and afte a bief discussion, we decided that thee was no othe choice but to pull the plug on this good idea that ganeed too little inteest. TH OSCC Building Bidges The OSCC will again team up with the Gey/Sauble Consevation Authoity to build a much needed bidge o walkway ove a paticulaly icky, gooey, muddy section of the tail between Inglis Falls and Haison Pak. About five yeas ago the club and the Consevation Authoity did a simila poject which poved to be a success fo both paties. The club was ecognized fo helping with eosion poblems caused fo a good pat by bicycles and GSCA got a nice bidge to call thei own. TH By Emil van Dijk Scamble and Ramble The Keppel Scamble and Backoad Ramble (my take on Pais-Roubaix) takes place on Sunday, June 10th. Stat time is 9:00 a.m. shapish, fom Kelso Beach, Owen Sound. The Scamble coves 85km and the Ramble is 42km. Both outes featue pavement, gavel, ail tail, doubletack and a wee bit of singletack, so choose you steed accodingly. This event is consideed a club ide, but it is self-guided so you can go at you own pace. Please download and pint off the map, laminate it o wap it in plastic, and bing it with you to the ide. You must also be self-sufficient so bing whateve you need to feel comfotable. Having a iding patne of similia ability is also a good idea. The oute will be slightly diffeent than last yea. Instead of following Fancis Dive, the couse will cove a lovely bit of foest doubletack fom Concession 14 to Big Rock

Puhlease! We ve all seen the 06 Gio, you dope...since the club has oad, mountain and oad time tial events, you need at least thee bikes in you stable. Tell you spouse that this is a fact...joining the OSCC (and buying thee new bikes) is cheape than a golf membeship at Cobble Beach. $25,000 to join and then anothe fou gand evey yea. They do have nice cat paths...if Basso and Ullich wee cheating and they couldn t beat Lance... Five young fellows e-shingled my oof this week. Not a safety haness to be seen. Yet the insuance cost fo the Sping Fling was moe than $8 pe peson. Thee has got to be a bette way...the Gey Roots SGR (shot goup ide) is a heck of an inteval wokout, plus it foces you to become a bette bike handle. Gio De Dundalk Repot By Michele de Hodgins Buonjouno! Well the Inteclub season is off and olling. I still haven t decided what sot of woman is Dundalk. She is cetainly diffeent things to diffeent ides. The local paysans appaently find he quite plain and unattactive. Howeve, the foeignes seemed to find he exotic and appealing. Out of the foty-fou states, only six wee fom the OSCC. In addition, no one showed up to help with egistation, stating, mashalling and finishing. So, I got to pactice looking Italian without the pessue of having to actually ide. Like Maio Cipollini when the Tou stats going up a slope geate than 1%, I was unable to stat. John 5 Outspoken

6 Bown gaciously abandoned afte two laps to help me with the finishing. As fo the est of the team, the OSCC faed easonably well. In spite of a complete lack of suppot in the leading goup, Emil managed to pull off a top ten finish (9th). Geoge Condy, also in a solo effot, came 19th. Teamwok eally paid off fo the emainde of the OSCC lads Dan Muawsky, Bet Hack and Tim Muawsky who finished 29th, 30th and 31st espectively. I ve now managed to put a few scoe of kilometes on my tusty steed (Rosinante) and a few exta pounds of pasta unde my belt. All I need is a new slicked-back haistyles and some cool sunglasses and I ll be eady fo Oo (pat 1) this Sunday - May 27. Hopefully Team OSCC will have a few moe entants. 9 Sping Cycling in West Viginia By John Bown At the end of Apil, we wee feeling the need to get back into shape fo cycling afte spending a winte of elative inactivity and cabo loading. Riding conditions in Ontaio ae maginal at best and not dependable at that time of the yea. We wee looking fo wame tempeatues and good oad iding within a easonable dive time fom Owen Sound and settled on a tip though Pennsylvania and into West Viginia and if need be as fa away as Noth Caolina. As we talked to people both in the U.S. and Canada and began to eseach diffeent aeas along the noth-south coido, two aeas came up as potential destinations, Chaleston, West Viginia and Ashville, Noth Caolina. We had 5 ½ days including tavel time to cycle so we settled on a Sat moning club ide with the Chaleston, West Viginia Mountain State Wheeles which allowed us to leave Owen Sound Fiday noon and stay ovenight noth of Chaleston and join the club fo the Satuday Moning Ride. Thei ides and maps ae posted on the web site com/ This was the fist majo scheduled ide of the yea entitled Ice Beake 60 and 100 Miles and listed as flat as it gets in West Viginia. with the oute following a ive valley. The tunout was good with 35 to 40 membes fo the ide fom a cycling club with a membeship simila to Owen Sound. When cyclists get togethe to stat a ide, no one claims they ae in top condition. But athe they talk about thei inactivity and weaknesses afte the winte West Viginia famland. almost as though they ae tying to establish a handicap befoe the ide stats. So thee wee a lot of people who appeaed to be in the same situation as ouselves, looking to get thei fist sping ides in. Thee wee a few who let it slip out that they had been iding in the Caolinas duing the pevious months. As we stated out Satuday, it was geat to be iding in a lage pack again and cuising along at 35 to 40 kilometes pe hou without much effot. Tempeatues wee good at 20º C, oads wee geat - naow and twisty with small hills, minimal taffic Pete Rissi and John Bown. and following a small ive. At the 30 Mile est stop the goup split into those completing the 60 Mi loop, some going on to complete the 100 Mile loop and some going off into the hills to do thei own 100 Miles. Not wanting to get dopped and lost in the hills, we settled fo 60 Miles, which tuned out to be a good choice since it just stated to ain as we aived at ou final destination. Afte the ide we met seveal membes of the club who suggested diffeent ides and Satuday night, met with the ide coodinato fo the club, Chuck Peteson, who bought maps and cue sheets fo 4 days of iding. Tempeatues fo the est of the tip wee 25ºC to 35ºC Sunday we ode to Hawkesnest Pak which was a geat ide of 100 plus kilometes on quiet county oads with lots of climbing (5,000 feet) and some geat descents on highways taveling at the same speed as the taffic. This also included a ide up to the New Rive Ovelook. Monday s ide was an annual 100 kilomete club ide 2 hous south of Chaleston, fom Rocky Gap just south of the West Viginia bode in Viginia. Stating fom Rocky Gap, we ode 40 kilometes West at 1% gade and into the wind to a small town, then south and stat a 700 foot climb to the wall of the cate and down 9 Outspoken

10 into Bukes Gaden which is the floo of the 12 kilomete x 6 kilomete cavity inhabited by fams and Yuppie dwellings ( Check 37º N, 81º W on Google Eath- tun to side view). Afte an 18 kilomete loop we climbed back out and wee on the oad back to Rocky Gap. Now with the wind behind and 1% downhill gade, ou speeds equaled 40 to 55 kilomete pe hou fo 40 kilometes. If only the TT s wee like that! Monday night we had a call fom a membe of the Mountain State Wheeles who was also Manage of the Touist Association fo Putnam County, appoximately 30 kilometes east of Chaleston, and asked us if we would like to do a idge ide, which is also a metic centuy ide. The Bidge to Ridge is held in August. Not having expeienced a idge ide we said "Sue" and met him in the moning to get the maps. Unfotunately he was not able to ide with us since his new cabon fibe bike had the wong cank set. As you can imagine a idge ide is not flat. Fom the ive, the climb stated immediately and was 800 feet to the top. The oads wee naow and vey quiet except fo the unchained dogs (spint taining fo Pete and I, leaving Don to deal with the canine) and once on top the view was geat. The oad had seveal dops and climbs most of which could be negotiated with some downhill speed. Occasionally we would tansition fom one idge to anothe by going though a valley and back up. This was ou toughest day but a geat ide with 110 kilometes and appoximately 7,000 vetical feet of climbing in 35ºC tempeatues equiing the appopiate hydation, duing and post ide. We finished off Wednesday moning with a 60 kilomete ive valley ide fom ou hotel, and then jumped in the ca to etun to Owen Sound. Oveall this was a good iding expeience fo Apil. We had decent weathe, quiet oads and within 11 hous diving time fom Owen Sound. If anyone is going to the aea and inteested in the maps check the web o give me a call fo some of the bigge maps.
