Sheehan spoke in suppot of chuch wokes posecuted fo giving sanctuay to illegal aliens, and said the denial of political asylum to efugees is a violation of the law. The attoney said thee ae appoximately '500,000 Cental Ameican efugees in the U.S., 55 pecent who qualify as political efugees by United Nations stipulations. Yet only 1. 5 pecent of these have been appoved fo legal asylum by the Reagan Administation, he said. The efugee poblem and the powe conflict in Cental Ameica ae only symptoms of something geate. Obseve epotes will not have to go though Beetz to speak to student govenment leades, Healy said. 4 The Obseve SMC faculey locked up by paietal hous By MARY FRAN GSCH Staff Repote Saint May's faculty, administation and staff who have expessed thei unhappiness with building doos locked at 4 p.m. because of the paietal hous appaently will have to put up with the inconvenience. "We ae making no plans to change the cuent hous," said Siste Kaol Jackowski, dean of student affais. To monito entances and exits, all esidence halls ae locked when paietals begin. The paietal hous wee extended in Apil 1985 fom 5 to 10 p.m. to the cuent 4 p.m. to midnight on weekdays. Anne Maie Kollman, student body pesident, said, " have head many complaints fom people about side doos in the esidence halls being locked. Since the doos ae locked when the administation and staff ae still in the building, they have been upset by this change." "We sent out questionnaies to all faculty, staff and administation in the esidence halls to ask them, simply, if this was an inconvenience to them o not. The esponse we got was excellent,"she said. Those esults ae petty low. t would cetainly be busie on football weekends, but this was a typical week," said Kollman. "Most of the people inconvenienced ae in LeMans,"said Jackowski. May 16, 1985: Usa Bown was lying in a bed in St. joseph's Hospital in South Bend, unable to walk, speak, o even beathe on he own. The doctos told he she had Guillaln-Bae syndome, a vius that can stike athletes of au ages, attacking the myelin sheaths suounding the neves and paalyzing evey muscle of the body. The paalysis is usually tempoay, they sald, as long as the patient makes it alive though a citical two-week peiod. t au had stated out that moning of May 11 when Bown was doing he usual dining hall choe of emoving used glasses fom tays on the conveyo belt. As a fome vasity basketball playe who still lifted weights egulaly, the 21- yea-old Bown was not used to feeling down. But the simple actions suddenly became stenuous, and she was foced to switch to pogessively easie jobs until she finally ended up doing the wok seated. That tip quickly ended with the docto on duty kindly infoming he that she was suffeing fom the usual finals-week fatigue and stess. Bown listened, numb with appehension and fight. "They put me in a wheelchai and left me thee (in a hospital waiting oom)," she said. "Thee was a man thee and said, 'Miste, Miste, come ove hee and hold my hand.' So he did." Bown was placed in the hospi tal's intensive cae unit, and fom then on, he condition was a steady pogession fo the wose. "Alii could think about was, will eve play basketball again? But that thought quickly left my mind. My fist thought was staying alive," she said. Day by day, she lost contol of he body fom the legs up. Soon she could neithe move he hands no speak, and could baely even close he eyes. "Finally said can't beathe - would gasp fo ai. t was one of the scaiest feelings eve had," she said. At times, Bown's tempeatue ead 1 06 degees and he heat ate was thee times geate than nomal. At one point, she contacted pneumonia and had blood dots. Though the window of an outside cone office, you could see a lone figue talking on the phone, unning his hands though his hai. As one would expect, a beleagueed Gey Faust was had at wok. He was looking fo answes to questions. Questions like "Why?" and "How?" Questions that don't have easy answes, but that must be answeed quickly... and pefeably befoe tomoow night. Gey Faust looked tied in that office Sunday, mainly because he is tied. He's tied of having to look fo answes to poblems that should have been solved a week ago. He's tied of seeing his team get whipped. As he said himself, he's tied of this "hose cap." "Hose cap" is a good phase to descibe the entie situation afte last week at least it's a good one that's pintable. Some would use othe synonyms of hose cap to descibe the play calling, the mistakes and the geneal attitude of the ish duing the game. While those phases can't be pinted hee, est assued they cay the same geneal idea. Only by examining myself could detemine that." n fact, Cusack doesn't conside himself to be any diffeent than the othe walk-ons. Despite his success in football, Cusack had planned to play baseball at Note Dame, following in the footsteps of his fathe, who captained the 1957 ish team. Fans would have to wait a week and look to Southen Califonia,whee the ish wee scheduled to play thei final game of the season, to see which of the two teams would be national champs. Fustated viewes and media afte the game, howeve, wee looking to ish head coach Aa Paseghian fo an explanation. Thei dande was up because the espected coach had odeed his team to stay on the gound and un out the clock afte the ish had eceived a Spatan punt at the Note Dame 30-yad line with just ove a minute emaining in the game. " think Note Dame will be toughe than they might nomally be," says Peles. "You know you'e in fo a physical game because they ae big, tough kids, and fo them it will be an emotional game. We'll have ou hands full." Michigan State's offense vs. Note Dame's defense: The Spatans, in the past, have had many successfull long-ange field goal kickes. They needed them, because the offense could aely punch the ball acoss the goal line. This yea, howeve, Peles has good eason to think his squad will make fans foget its statistics fom last season, when it finished ninth in the Big 10 in total offense. Keying the now-potent Spatan attack is 5-11, 205-pound halfback Loenzo White. White, who will un fom the 1-fomation o as a single-setback, gatheed 174 yads on a duable 39 caies last week against Aizona State. Peles feels the sophomoe sensation could be the foce out of the backfield which the Spatans have lacked in past seasons. "Loenzo has geat quickness and can beak tackles," says Peles. "Also, he has the ability to catch the football and we plan to thow to him out of the backfield a lot this fall." Although the Spatans lack a tue blocking fullback, 5-10, 199-pound junio Bobby Mose and 6-1, 20 1-pound classmate Keith Gates ae adequate. Mose, whose fathe Jim was the captain of the 1956 Note Dame team, caught five passes fo 39 yads against Aizona State. Gates, meanwhile, should see action if Peles decides to unleash the new option offense which the Spatan coach has pomised followes. A big facto in whethe Michigan State uns the option o sticks to moe conventional gound wafae will be which of wo edshined feshman quatebacks gets the nod against Note Dame. This may not matte, though, if Note Dame's defensive line of Geg Dingens, Eic Dosey, and Wally Kleine have a day like they did last week against Michigan when they failed to ecod a single sack. Afte that game, Faust claimed the slow play off the line had made the diffeence. "Oveall, didn't think we did that bad a job on defense," says Faust. "But we've got to get a bette pass ush and we've got to get toughe in the middle." Thee wee few poblems with the ish linebackes last week, and 6-0, 194-pound fee safety Steve Lawence so impessed the ish coaches with his 10 tackles that they felt fee to move 5-10, 194-pound Hiawatha Fancisco back to the tailback position to help the offense. What is supising is how he did it. Michigan State plays a 4-3 "stunt" defense, which elies on quickness and intelligence moe than bute stength. n fact, the Spatan defensive line of 5-11, 261-pound tackle Joe Cuan, 6-2, 228-pound tackle Mak Nichols, 6-5, 240-pound end Waen Leste, and 6-2, 232-pound All-Ameica candidate Kol.ly Quinn at the othe end, is anything but massive. Michigan State, howeve, was walked ove last season duing the fouth quate, allowing 87 points to the enemy while collecting only 39 fo themselves. This could be due to that small, quick defensive line being won out late in the game. Moe likely, though, it is because of inexpeienced Spatan conebacks. And once again Michigan State will play wo untested conebacks, sophomoes Todd Kumm and Keith Fishe. Kumm saw only nine minutes of action last season, while Fishe contibuted in a backup ole at the safety position. Eveywhee else, the Spatans ae solid but not unbeatable. Phil Pake, a 5-11, 180 pound fee safety, and a sue bet fo postseason honos, will be all ove the field as usual. Pake picked off two passes and ecoded 11 tackles in the 1983 upset of Note Dame. At linebacke, 6-3, 241-pound senio Anthony Bell is definitely the leade. The Spatans will need Bell's speed, howeve, as they attempt to eplace both of thei othe linebackes fom last season. Offensively, the ish wij count once again on the legs of elusive tailback Allen Pinkett. Pinkett, who had to fight fo all of his 89 yads last week against Michigan, will need blocking help fom sophomoe fullback Fank Stans and the huge, expeienced offensive line. The offensive line, which the ish coaches felt was also a bit slow off the ball last wt>ek, will be aided by the etun of 6-5, 271-pound tackle Tom Doege. Doege did not stat against the Wolveines because of a mino injuy. The emainde of the line will be filled by senios Tim Scannell and Shawn Heffen at guads, Mike Peino at tackle, and Ron Plantz at cente. But the key to the ish offense will undoubtably be whethe quateback Steve Beuelein ( 11 completions in 23 attempts fo 160 yads last week) can exploit the young cones of the Spatans. That s how Note Dame baseball coach Lay Gallo descibes his stategy fo this yea's fall baseball season. The fall season is equivalent to majo league baseball's sping taining. The yea opened last week when the ish dopped two games to Badley while eaning a split with Valpaaiso. Against Badley, Note Dame commlted some cucial mistakes which tuned a close 1-0 game in the fouth inning into a 1 '5-4 Badley omp. "A defensive play was not made, and ou pitches did not do the job," said Gallo. Badley, which had played five games pio to Note Dame's opene, also managed to win the second game. This one was much close, howeve, as the ish fell, 2-1. Against Valpaaiso, senio Mak Watzke pitched seven innings of scoeless baseball befoe being elieved. That's what.the Univesity of llinois-chicago povided fo the Note Dame women's tennis team yesteday, as the ish upped thei season ecod to 4-0 with a convincing 9-0 victoy. Fo Note Dame head coach Mic helle Gelfman, the only disappointment comes with the fact that he squad has not yet been challenged this season. " eally wish they could have given us a little moe competition," said Gelfman. "The gils did about what expected against a team like this. They just played consistently and did a solid job." Top-seeded Susie Panthe stated things fo the ish with a 6-l, 6-l pasting of llinois-chicago's No. playe, Gigi Otto. Otto was one of thee women fom the visiting squad who was able to captue as many as two games in the six singles matches. Kim Kebis managed to give Note Dame sophomoe May Colligan a 6-2, 6-0 match, while junio Jo-Anne Biafoe downed May Limosneo by the same scoe. n othe singles play, sixth-seeded Tammy Schmidt cushed Robyn Ranke without giving up a game, and Michelle Dasso and zzy O'Bien enjoyed 6-, 6-0 victoies. The ish, 1-5, will play host to Michigan State tonight on Catie Field at 7:30 and ndiana on Alumni Field Sunday at 2 p.m. Victoy in these games against fellow Mideast egion teams is cucial fo Note Dame's hopes fo a bid to the' postseason tounament. n addition, the two-game home stand, the only one fo the ish until Oct. 30, povides a chance fo the team to play in font of a fiendly cowd and gain momentum to impove its ecod. Victoy will not come easily this weekend, though, as the ish will face some stiff competition fom the Spatans and the Hoosies. Michigan State bin a 3-0 ecod to Catie tonight, with wins ove Easten Michigan, Hope and Ohio State. The ish hold a seies ecod against MSU. Last season in East Lansing, the ish led the Spatans, 2-l, in the waning minutes of the game, but a late goal sent the game into ovetime, whee it ended in a 2-2 tie. Note Dame Head Coach Dennis Gace said at the time that he was disappointed that his team could not hold onto its lead. Tonight the ish have a chance to make up fo that tie, but the Spatans pobably will be thinking the same thing. "They have a good season going," Gace said afte pactice yesteday. "We ae a Mideast foe and they've got to win if they want to challenge fo a tounament bid. We'e one of the teams that they feel they've got to beat. They'll come hee eady to play." Gace said he is confident, howeve, that his team can beat MSU. "f we play like we did against Evansville (which beat the ish in ovetime), think we have a vey good chance of winning," the second-yea coach said. Last season, Note Dame jumped to a 1-0 lead and held the Hoosies to a 1-1 tie at halftime, but ndiana pulled away in the second half fo a 5-l victoy in Bill Amstong Stadium in Bloomington. The Hoosies wee then defending two consecutive national championships, and they still held thei numbe-one anking. t is a diffeent U team that will play on Alumni Field Sunday, howeve. The Hoosies,.who neve have lost moe than thee games in a season since going vasity in 197 3, aleady have dopped fou of thei fist five contests this fall. ndiana will face Ohio State tonight in Bloomington. Gace is quick to point out that the Hoosies' ecod may be deceiving. "ndiana has the same poblem we do," gace explained. "They'e l-4, and all fou teams (that beat the Hoosies) ae top-ten teams. And he (U Head Coach Jey Yeagley) stats thee o fou feshmen. "But they'll be typical ndiana. They'll play had and they'll be an excellent side," Gace continued. "We'll have to fight fo ou lives." f anyone knows what a "typical" Hoosie team is, it is Gace, who played and coached unde Yeagley at U in the 1970s. While ndiana appeas to be in a slump, the ish, although on the shot end of a lot of scoes this season, have been playing good socce against top-anked talent. Wllen the two teams clash on Sunday, the esult could be one of the closest games in the histoy of the seies. "Note Dame used to be a beathe," Yeagley said in a taped phone inteview this week, "but Dennis Gace is doing a supe job up thee. Note Dame is not an easy touch anymoe. They'e a stong team, they'e a vt y physical team, and they'e extemely well-coached. We'll have to be eady." Being eady s going to mean getting the l! defense togethe, Yeagley said. Supise anyone? Quite fankly, befoe the season began, the chances wee slim that anyone, let alone Note Dame with the schedule it plays, would finish the yea with an unblemished ecod. Fo that eason, it eally comes as no supise that Note Dame lost a game this season. The question now is how many moe games the ish will lose this season. Who's to say Note Dame won't, in fact, win the next l 0, go to a majo bowl and win the national championship? A simila thing happened with the 1977 ish, when they lost the second game of the season to Mississippi befoe ebounding to win the next nine games and whip Texa.'i in the Cotton Bowl fo the national cown. At the same time, who's to say Note Dame will accomplish a simila feat this yea? Pobably not too many people, except maybe those ove n the football office at the ACC, would expess that belief- and with good eason. Note Dame did nothing last week against Michigan to show that thin will be any diffeent this season. The offense was stuck in pak fo much of the game, and if it hadn't been fo the effots of the dependable John Caney, the ish would have been completely out of luck in tems of offensive poduction. This is not the time of the season to get down on Gey Faust and the team, though. One game hadly makes a season. Michigan State is pobably as good as Michigan is, if not bette, so a solid indication of whee this season is going will come out by Satuday night. Jeff Blumb Spots Edito Ganted, this is the final yea of Faust's contact, and if the ish don't stat winning, he won't be back next season. Consideing the way Note Dame came back fom a 3-4 mak last season to win its last fou games, it's still too ealy fo anyone to ende a decision on Faust's futue o to ule out the ish this season. But while it would be unfai to judge Faust negatively at this point, a numbe of questions do come to mind about the little that has tanspied so fa. Following last Satuday's less-than-spectacula showing, many people wee citical of play calling and the like. Foget those gipes, though. Fom this vantage point, the biggest poblem s an attitudinal one. Wllile most playes sinceely cae about the success of the team, a small minoity do not, and that, moe than anything else, is the poblem. On one hand, you have playes who wee in teas afte last week's loss, who had touble sleeping that night, who tuly want to win. This is the majoity, and these playes know who they ae. At the same time, thee is a vey small minoity of playes who just don't seem to have thei heat in it. Because they aen't playing as much as they would like o else not at all, thei attitude is one of little concen fo the team's success. Maybe it's good that this has become painfully obvious because now the coaches can do something about it. Pehaps the saddest thing which ha.o; happened with Note Dame football, though, is the apathy which has set in - among students, fans and, yes, even playes. Losing has become an accepted thing. Afte Satuday's loss, it was as if the game hadn't even been played. Thee was little talk of it within the doms, a.'i students emained faily level-headed. Losses used to be so infequent that thei occuence would cause majo bedlam on campus. Soy to say, not anymoe. One playe even talked of team apathy on Satuday. t's had to figue out how a team can be apathetic in its fist game of the season, especially when it's in font of nealy 106,000 people. Don't think the diffeence in attitudes between the two teams wasn't obvious, eithe. Anyone who watched both sides come out onto the field saw the Michigan playes jumping up and down, while the Note Dame playes totted out with little visible emotion. t will be inteesting to see how all paties- students, fans and playes- espond this Satuday, as what happens on the field and in the stands will go a long way n deciding the tone fo the est ofthe season.
