Unfortunately for some of our May events the weather was still cold and rainy but we still have plenty of time for sunny, warm temps for summer riding activities. Our chapter members were very active again in May with both GWRRA and family events such as Mother s Day. Mother s Day was on 8 May and we deliberately didn t schedule any chapter events so our members could enjoy a wonderful Mother s Day. Hopefully our ladies and their families enjoyed a great Mother s Day! On this same date, Chris, Marge, Mike and Fran kicked off May by having their breakfast meal at the Darlington Fire House Fundraiser to support our local fire department and in support of our chapter s Fire House Challenge (and kudos to Chris and Mike what a great way to kick-start your spouse Mother s Day!) On 11 May, we had our Ice Cream Social at the Artic Circle in Churchville, MD. Ten members braved the cold, wet and windy weather that night and enjoyed some ice cream and hamburgers and friendly camaraderie... MD-H Chapter Meeting 4 th Sunday at Golden Corral, 706 S. Philadelphia Blvd., Aberdeen, MD Breakfast at 0800; Meeting at 0900
2 Then 14 May, our chapter members divided and conquered: Neal and Carol and their family went to the Robert Fulton Fire House Fundraiser for their meal. Once again our chapter members showed their support of the fire department as well as supported our chapter s Fire House Challenge. On the same day, eleven CH-H members and two family members attended PA-B s Spring Fling Fundraiser in Lancaster, PA. Not only did we support their Fundraiser, but Glenda, Kevin and Carol, and Shane, me and our granddaughter went on PA-B s DICE Ride around the Lancaster area for several hours. In the meantime, Mike, Chris and Marge decided to do their own ride around Lancaster. Pete and Alice and their granddaughters drove to a nearby Amish village and explored Lancaster has lots of Amish buggies, horses, cows, and sheep as well as other farm animals to see! And let s not forget there s some great shopping in Lancaster too! On 15 May, Glenda and Johnnie, Chris and Marge, Mike, and Shane, me, and our granddaughter rode to the Golden Corral in Glen Burnie, MD and attended the combined MD-C s Gathering AND MD-J s Gathering. Then May, Glenda, Johnnie, Shane and I attended the PA District Rally that was held in State College, PA. We had a great time, it was good seeing our friends from several MD and PA chapters and making some new friends too! The PA chapter members received lots of laughs and applause during their Talent Show skits! And we even attended a couple seminars while there. Then on Sunday, 22 May, Glenda, Shane, and I attended the PA-F Gathering that was held that morning it was a large room but the room was definitely filled to capacity from all the various PA and MD chapter members in attendance. We enjoyed great riding weather on Thursday and Friday, but unfortunately the rain rolled back in for Saturday and Sunday. About two hours into our ride home Sunday, around the Harrisburg area, we finally rode out of the rain and the rest of our trip home was dry. If you ve never been to another District Rally, keep this one in mind for next year you re sure to have lots of fun if you attend. On 22 May, Kevin led CH-H s Gathering since Shane and I were at the PA District Rally. We didn t have a lot of attendees as quite a few of our members had left for the Alaskan Cruise. Kevin was going to lead a ride after the meeting to escort veterans to lunch, but it was cancelled. Then 24 May through 5 June, the MD District had their Alaskan Cruise. Mike and Fran, Cathy and Steve, Sue and Bill, Barbie and her nephew, Robert, signed up and went on the cruise with others from MD District. I m sure that they enjoyed a great time based on the pictures that Cathy posted on FB and maybe you ll find an article about their cruise and photos later in this newsletter. Well that finally wound down our activities for the month of May. Let s continue to have great turn-outs for our June events and don t forget to attend Paul and Carol s Pot Luck that is coming up this Saturday, 11 June, at 1pm! Pot Lucks are always a fun time!! So come on y all give them a call to let them know you will be attending and what to bring, also if you need directions. 5 Greetings from our Assistant Chapter Director Kevin Paul Rolling Thunder I went down with the CMA group to Rolling Thunder. We handed out water at a booth set up right across the street from Thunder Alley. We gave out water all day. The marine who normally stands on the corner down there got married the day of Rolling Thunder right there on the corner before everything started. I'm sure it was a big day for him and his wife. She actually stood out on the corner with him for a while but I m not sure how long she lasted. The ride for the Vets that was scheduled after the last meeting we had on May 22 - due to the rain nobody showed up for it so I assume they postponed it. I went to CMA Tri State and Camp Wo Me To where we had about 200 people show up for the weekend. Roughly 60 people went to Shady Maple for lunch. Due to the inclement weather most of us went up in vehicles but we did have about six bikes that actually rode up to the restaurant with us.
6 Greetings from our Rider Educator Rodney Malone We did it! We survived the long rainy month of May. I m not sure how each of you might feel about it but I for one am glad that month is long gone. We re looking forward to a dryer summer ahead. This month s topic for sharing and reflection is Motorcycle Etiquette. I wanted to provide the below list I found online, authored by Nancy Brotherton. She said she gets lots of questions about motorcycle etiquette and what are the dos and don ts of motorcycle riding. I would be interested in hearing what your thoughts are on the list. For her, she says it all boils down to respect and treating other riders as you would have them treat you (sound familiar?). Here is a list of common issues she provided. 1.The most important is to Ride your own Ride. Don t let others push you into going too fast or doing something you are not comfortable with. 2. Ride respectfully and wisely in urban areas. Noise pollution related to loud motorcycle pipes is a hot topic in the motorcycle arena. By riding wisely and going slower and using the clutch, we can bring less attention to the topic and hope it slowly fades away. 3. If another rider comes up behind you and wants to pass, as soon as it is safe, make room and let them pass. It is not worth the effort it takes to get worked up about it and besides, let them get the speeding ticket. 4. Doing wheelies down a major highway with other vehicles sharing the road is not very smart nor does it set a good example for other riders. 5. Swerving in and out quickly through slow traffic with or without turn signals is another sign you are not following the rules of motorcycle etiquette or the rules of the road. Unfortunately, the sins of one motorcycle rider are the sins of all motorcycle riders to the public.6. A hand wave or nod is perfectly acceptable and respectable, if you wish to acknowledge a fellow rider. 7. If riding two up, back up your bike and get it into position first, then have your passenger get on. Don t back up with your passenger on your motorcycle because of limited visibility and stability issues. 8. Never, never, never touch or get on someone s motorcycle that hasn t given you permission. 9. If you smoke cigarettes while riding, be sure when you flick them that you aren t flicking them at the rider behind you. 10. Don t tailgate other riders or other vehicles. Leave yourself plenty of braking distance for unforeseen emergencies. 11. Stay out of a rider s or vehicle s blind spot. Make sure that they can always see you and your motorcycle. 12. Help a fellow rider in need. If you see a rider on the side of the road broke down or fallen, either call for help or if it is safe to stop, lend them a hand. 13. Mount your motorcycle on the side that is most comfortable for you. Common sense dictates that because the kickstand is on the left of the motorcycle, mounting from the right would be the wisest in case your leg catches, you or the motorcycle won t be pushed over. She offered this final question to consider. You are out riding when you come up behind an unknown rider. The stoplight changes to red. The unknown rider is in the left-hand position of the lane, so do you pull up beside them and start chatting, pull up beside them and nod, stay in a staggered formation behind them, or pull directly behind them? What would your answer be? Ride Prepared, Be Safe, and Have Fun

8 Maryland District Trip/Cruise to Alaska Many of you know the newsletter this month is late because I have been on the Maryland District trip to Alaska and it was awesome! We had 4 days on land, starting in Fairbanks where we stayed at Bear Lodge, an outstanding hotel. Many of us took a ride on the paddlewheel boat Discovery that has been operated by 3 generations of the same family where we saw a bush pilot take off and land his plane on the river right beside our boat, demonstrating how folks have gotten around in Alaska for years. We saw the sled dog team training at the camp of the late Susan Butcher who won four Iditarod Sled Races. Some dredged for gold (and found some). We then moved on to the Denali Princess Lodge where we did some ATV riding, white water rafting, kayaking and sight-seeing. On this trip we were some of the 10% of the people who actually saw the entire Mt. McKinley, or Denali, the native word meaning The Big One or The Tall One. The weather was so clear and bright it seemed God was looking down on our little group of travelers. Next stop was Mt McKinley Princess Lodge where we got an even better look the mountain, and where some even saw a mama moose and 2 babies, up close and personal. That was exciting. We rode a double-decker glass top train from Denali down to Talkeetna, a quaint little Alaskan town where the 1990 s TV series Northern Exposure was filmed. The train ride was gorgeous beautiful sunshine and mountains everywhere. Then there was the cruise - great food, massages and wonderful entertainment. Also more excursions, like the Lumberjack contests and rides out to the Yukon where we rode a demo dog sled, crossed scary suspension bridges and saw some black and brown bear, feasting on dandelions. Some visited a mock totem pole village and actually walked on the glaciers too with a salmon bake afterwards. Several of us spent some time in Vancouver, BC, Canada at the end of the trip. Stanley Park was a popular site to visit. We stopped by the quaint little seaside town of White Rock, with open air restaurants, shops, train tracks, a promenade and small beach of white rocks. The homes there average $1.5 million. We also drove up to Whistler Mountain where the Winter Olympics were held in What an amazing ride on a gondola high above the valleys! Please enjoy the photos to follow. They tell the real story of our adventures. Steve and Cathy and the Gondola Ride from Peak to Peak at Whistler Mountain where the 2010 Winter Olympics were held.
9 Barbie at Mendenhall Glacier! Our train to Denali Sunset from the ship at midnight! Mama Moose and babies outside our lodge Denali The High One Mama Bear and cubs by the road
