1 GOLD WING ROAD RIDER ASSOCIATION Maryland/DE District Chapter H Serving Harford, Baltimore & Cecil counties & Southern Pennsylvania Web page April NEWSLETTER 2018 MD-H Chapter Meeting 4 th Sunday at Golden Corral, 706 S. Philadelphia Blvd., Aberdeen, MD Breakfast at 0800; Meeting at 0900 Mason-Dixon Wings Director Kevin Paul CHAPTER OFFICERS AND VOLUNTEER COORDINATORS Asst. Director Paul Breeden Treasurer Fran Haslup Ride Coordinator Paul Breeden Motorist Awareness Coordinator Mike Haslup Web Master Chris Nagel Sunshine Lady Ruth Malone Visitation, Mileage, Firehouse Coordinator Marge Nagel Phone Tree Ruth Malone Membership Enhancement Cathy Kelley Storekeeper Marge Nagel /50 Raflle Neal & Carol Reynolds Newsletter Cathy Kelley Couple of the Year 2018 Greetings from our Chapter Director Kevin Paul Happy Easter to everyone. What can I say? Spring sure did come in like winter. Now that we got all the snow behind us we can move on to riding weather. Here is a recap of what we did in March. The Frozen Chosen Ride was postponed due to weather but it happened on March 10. We went to MD C and MD J gatherings. We did the District Bowl-a-thon where Barbie Aspinall was our only chapter member bowling. Thanks to her! We did have friends and family to round out a team and we thank them too. There were some fire house visits also. We went to Ledo s Pizza for our Night Out Fundraiser. Even with the call for bad weather we as a chapter made a good showing. We made $98.00 plus some donations. Way to go!! Thanks to everyone who participated. We will be planning more of nights out like this throughout the year. We just found out that IHOP in Aberdeen is encouraging GWRRA to do this through May. What is next for us? Save these dates. April 7 - MD I Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser. I know we have a few that are going. April 11 - Dairy Queen Ice Cream at 7:00. Possible MA event at Romancing the Chrome April 14. POC is Mike Haslup. April 18 - Staff meeting at Cathy s at 7:00. April 21 our Spaghetti dinner bingo at 2pm, volunteers be there at noon. IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO REGISTER. Our gathering on April 22. Possible ride to National Crypto Museum April 28. POC is Steve Kelley. Please Let Paul or myself know of any ride or events you would like to do.
2 Greetings from our Assistant Chapter Director Paul Breeden The past month Mother Nature showed us she is still the boss. The weather was up and down one day in the mid 50 s and the next in the low 20 s. And winds up to 75 miles an hour taking down trees, roofs and power lines. Not very good riding weather. So now for some good news. Congratulations to Marge Nagel on buying her new Can-Am Spyder. She was sporting around on it on our Frozen Chosen ride March 10. Also congratulations to Sue Jacobs who also bought a new Can- Am Spyder. Both women have a lot to smile about. Now for some business. Please come out and support our Spaghetti Dinner Bingo on April 21. Flyer is later in this newsletter and you can still register. Invite your friends, family and co-workers to join us for a good time. Attendance for all chapters is down over 50%, so if you can help support them in their fundraisers, please do. They all need your help and someone from most chapters will be at our Spaghetti Bingo. Photos from Bowl-a-thon

4 Rider Education By Jeff McCarter Spring Tune Up Motorcycles are meant to be ridden and no matter how well you put it up for the winter it will require some extra attention after sitting idle for a long time such as in the spring. Those that are not able to do their own maintenance should use a qualified shop to do a thorough check up. If you do your own maintenance or you just want to be able to ask your mechanic a list of items to see if he did them, to keep him on his toes, read on Begin with looking under your machine before you move it from storage, any leaks evident? Now the work begins, use the new GWRRA N17 Vehicle inspection sheet to track items as you go. Can t say enough about inspecting your tires visually over their entire surface on a regular basis. Look for cuts, cords showing, and other surface imperfections, inspect the tread depth, the wear indicators can help you decide if the depth is adequate. That back tire is mostly hidden, use the center stand and get down there to inspect. Get the pressures corrected while you are there. While on the center stand give your side stand a look over, including the safety switches if you have them on your stand. All your controls should be checked. Inspect fluids in clutch and brake reservoirs, do the switches for brake and cruise control activate at the proper points. Does the throttle snap back when released and are the cables adjusted correctly? Inspect all cables especially where they rub against other objects for wear and lubricate if necessary. Turn the handlebars and watch your cables for any that may bind and verify the steering bearings are good. Operate all the controls for lights and verify working properly. I use a rope to activate my handlebar brake, if I don t have help, and verify if all brake lights work. Check all the fluids, make sure you do this by the method the manufacture says to do it, you may need to warm up the engine first to check the oil for instance. Check the suspension. Inspect that the brake hoses move freely if you bounce your suspension. Inspect the frame to the best of your ability, especially if you trailer with you bike. Consider perhaps removing as much plastic as you can and get on eye on hidden locations, especially welds. You can go as far as you wish in your spring check, I know one friend who found a mouse nest in his air cleaner, expect the unexpected. Next your bike needs to have all that dust cleaned off, use this cleaning to pull and tug on parts and verify fasteners are all nice and tight while you go over all the surfaces. This is often the time I find problems before they become bad, is while cleaning. Pull your gear out. Helmet liners usually unclip, and you can wash them and inspect them. Also find the manufacture date stamp in your helmet, is it time to replace it due to age? The rest of your gear, check the zippers, fasteners, etc. and if that rain gear hasn t been out in a while give it a look over, spring is known for showers. Your safety may depend on this gear, replace or upgrade anything you deem necessary. When purchasing research the safety rating method on the items and try to buy items in bright colors if possible. Now one more item to get ready for the season, YOU. Your skills diminish without use, so gear up and take your bike out to a safe location and practice quick stops, swerving, and slow maneuvers. This will also verify your bike is up to the task.
