So far it has been interesting with Sandy venting her wrath on the East coast. Hope everyone reading this news letter is OK. A lot of our friends in NJ and NY were in dire straights, we took up a collection at the District staff meeting as well as at the Chapter I gathering the following day and raised almost $ for Rock-a-way beach. We decided to send the money there to help the Salvation Army deal with the aftermath of the storm. I personally only lost power for 24 hours but Wendy was out power for 3 days. The water ran down her street into her back yard and because there was no electric her sump pump wasn t working. She had major flood damage in her basement. She is getting her basement cleaned up now but she lost quite a bit in her basement. The good thing is that the flooding was caused by a power outage which means she is covered by her insurance. I don't know if any others in the chapter have suffered any losses due to Sandy, but please let me know if you have and there is anything we can do to help. We had a very productive meeting on Saturday. I will be following up with a lot of fund raiser dates in our calendar. Chapter A will be folding at the end of this year. We hope that in the future they can be brought back as the District will keep their charter alive. Maryland District will be holding the Bowl-A- Thon as their fund raiser until the time Chapter A can be re-opened then they will take it over. District Staff will be doing the work with the help of Gail and Tom McCormick this year. They need a lot of help. Chapter J and L will remain open. Chapter L will remain open for another year thanks to Danny Horton and Spanky Barth. I do not know the details of Chapter J yet, but I'm sure we will find out at Winterthing. Up Coming events: On December the 8th we will be going to Longwood Gardens, 1001 Longwood Road, Kenneth Square, Pa Phone I was able to find Chapter Meeting - 4th Sunday at the Golden Corral, Aberdeen, MD Breakfast 8:00A.M./Meeting 9:00A.M.
2 out the usual prices for the gardens. These are subject to change but I think that this is what I paid last year. They were closed when I finally remembered to call so I only got the computer. I will try tomorrow to get more information. The costs are $18.00 adults, $15.00 seniors, $8.00 kids 5 to 18, and kids 4 and under are free. Hope this helps some of you to make the decision whether to join us and perhaps bring along your grand kids. The following have signed up so far; myself, my daughter my granddaughter, Wendy and her granddaughter?, Bill and Susie, Ruth and Rodney, Shane and Judy, Debbie and David and?, Rick and Cathy, Lynn and Chuck Banfi, Mike and Fran, Barbie plus 2, Will and Mardee. I have roughly 30 people going. Nice. Next is the staff dinner at my house on Friday Dec. 12th at 6:00. I have signed up Marge & Chris, Ruth & Rodney, David and Debbie, Cathy and Steve and Wendy. I thought I would make Eggplant Parm and Chicken Parm. Please let me know if you can't eat either one of these ASAP. Our Christmas Party is on Jan 5 th, 2013 so please get your money to Fran Haslup. I need a head count by Christmas. Its only $10 for Chapter members, see the flier on line or at the gathering). The Spaghetti/Bingo Flier is out so please get signed up and get your money to Fran Haslup (see attached flier) Ending Mileage, you need to get your ending mileage to Cathy Kelley as soon after November 30th as possible. If any of you still have visitation papers that you have not turned into Cathy please do so ASAP. Well that's all for now. Be careful riding out there. The fallen leaves are slippery and expect black ice with the falling cold temperatures. Sue Miller Greetings from the Chapter s Rider Educator David and Debbie Sorrick Fall Riding Except for the occasional hurricane or tropical storm or maybe the nor easterner that comes through, this is the most beautiful riding season. The humidity is low, the sky is clear and the air is crisp. Leaves are changing colors and the weather feels invigorating. Everyone is out for the evening ride and Sunday drive. What should I tell you? Check your turn signals, check your battery, check your tires for proper tread life, and check your sanity before leaving the driveway. Take a couple of mind clearing deep breaths and think about where you are going, how you are going to get there. Is your driving course clearly in your mind? Do you know of the existing road hazards present? OK. Go! OOPS! How about taking a friend? Did you think about inviting someone else to ride with you? So you are just going down to Wal-mart to get some window caulking. Is there anyone that lives between your home and destination? Is it a neighbor that has (gasp) another type of bike? (shivers). Invite them along for the ride. GWRRA welcomes associate members and prospective members to ride with us. Hint: this just might be a possible future prospect or a safety buddy. SAFETY BUDDY: is someone to ride with that will share the responsibility to watch out for road hazards. In case of an emergency, a riding buddy can render first-aid or call for help. We wanted to also share the below article titled Survival. Survival! You have 20 years riding on motorcycles. You have attended too many conferences, rallies, gatherings and fund-raisers to remember. Why should you care about rider education and the levels programs>is this just a gimmick for the GWRRA to keep that precious tax exempt status? Many members have mixed feelings about the above. Why should the experienced rider still take training classes? He/she could probably teach the instructors a thing or two about riding techniques. Many riders have changed motorcycles several different times through the years and many have multiple motorcycles right now. The rider feels that by just switching machines is enough to keep different skills and techniques fresh. How about the ones who believe the levels program is being pushed so hard for the tax-exempt status of GWRRA. WRONG. WRONG. WRONG. The entire program is not slated at the experienced riders! News flash! The program is 2 fold. It is geared for the new riders to gain experience and confidence, to encourage the intermediate rider to continue to practice while enjoying the fellowship of his friends in GWRRA. It is ALSO for the experienced rider to take the above 2 types of riders, to lead them, teach them
3 and have fun riding with them in a SAFE group of other riders and for everyone to SURVIVE to RIDE AGAIN. Stop and think for a moment. You have been there and done it all so you say to yourself: let someone else do it I have done my share. Your chapter has a ride planned to go to southern Maryland on a bridge touring ride. There are about 8 bikes that go. There is a Spyder, 2 trikes, a side-car and the rest are 1500 s and 1800 s. You are about 3 rd row back. You don t want to lead nor have the drag duties. You just want to ride and enjoy the scenery. Half ways through you go over a grooved bridge. Unknown to you the rider directly ahead of you has never crossed a grooved bridge before. He slows down suddenly when the handle-bars start to pull on his arms from the tires riding the grooves. He down shifts suddenly and wobbles. You have glanced over the side and looked at a sail-boat full of pretty women in bathing suits. Just as you glance forward and slam on your brakes, the bike in front of you goes down and you hit it. The bike beside you tries to swerve around but the grooves flip him over too. Who caused this accident? Could it have been prevented? What would have helped everyone more? The new rider could have signaled before going onto the grooved bridge and pulled off. He could have told someone before the ride when the bridge theme was announced (if he had thought about grooved bridges). The experienced rider could have been in better communication with the new rider and been asking him experience questions along the ride and checking on his comfort level at different stops. If no one cares, no one shares, no one practices together or asks questions about different skill levels that each rider possess..how can rides be safe? Bottom line: sharing and caring protects everyone. Sharing experience and memories of trips taken, dangers encountered and joys found is the basis of the human species. Oh, (gasp here please) it is also free. It doesn t require heavy lifting, moving or money. And I have yet to find any Gold Wing Rider who doesn t like to talk! Many also take pictures (what a novel idea) of their trips and are eager to share them with others. Why is this important? What does a picture taken from Colorado, over a guard rail looking down 100 ft. to the top of 60 tall trees tell you? How high is the elevation and how does it affect the performance of different engines? How about if you are pulling a trailer? How do you handle going back down from these mountains? Ever rode through the Texas and New Mexico deserts in summer? How do you prepare? How does this affect your engine performance? Do you think you should stop somewhere afterwards and change your oil and filters that got clogged with sand, BEFORE winter lay-up? How about Skyline Drive in the fall? What are the dangers there? Deer? Bear? Pine needles in road? Nuts or fallen branches? How about up in New Hampshire in November? Frost in early mornings? Fog? Frozen fingers and toes? How can the newbies learn about these things? 1. Let them just get out there and find out first - hand the risks of falling prey to the above listed conditions. 2. Experienced riders can step up and help! A. You can offer to go with the new rider on a trip B. You can talk at a gathering about different areas of travel and what you encountered there on your rides. Show pictures and answer questions. C. You can practice with the new riders and encourage them to take Rider education level training classes. NOTE: the rider education level program helps riders and co-riders at different levels of expertise and on different types of bikes to practice safe maneuvering on practice courses dealing with: ACCELERATING, CORNERING, STOPPING, AVOIDING OBSTICLES, and increasing comfort levels handling your motorcycle making these moves. How do you tell a rider that has learned from a rider education training course? The smile on the participants faces at the end of the course and their willingness to stand around and discuss it afterwards. They continue to question the instructor about What If s? afterwards. Sharing and Caring = Survival!..Practice. In short, assisting riders in riding safer! Ride to survive! Share the fun and be safe. David and Debbie Sorrick MD Chapter H Rider Educators
