2 Chapter Director Line HIVE Family and Friends, Blessings to ALL. It has been a minute but I am slowly making my way back to the HIVE. I appreciate all the well wishes and prayers during some difficult times. The HIVE has been alive and well and I am looking forward to seeing you all during the upcoming events and July Chapter Gathering. 18 June Chapter B Gathering. Unfortunately I was unable to make the gathering due to the passing of my father but I heard that things went well. 18 June Chapter C Pig Roast. I know that we had some rain in ry Dockery were able to represent and I think the HIVE came home with a little cash that day also. A great time was had by all. 19 June Fathers Day. I pray that all you fathers has a joyful fathers day and showered with plenty of love. I pretty much wanted to stay home and continued my recuperation process because I had targeted the PA W visit as my breakout party to get back on the road. 25 Jun Visit Pennsylvania W (Everett PA).I decided that this would be the time to get back in the saddle and see how things felt after a layoff. I met up with Lillian, Dennis & Charley at RIPS and at 0615 we sat out on our 2hr 20min ride. Traffic was light and the weather was perfect both to and from. We arrived as many of the PA W family was arriving for the gathering, they gave us that HMMM look at first until we announced where we were coming from and then their reaction turned to WOW what time did you all leave. They welcomed us with lots of hugs and Glad to see ya s the forecast for that day but Ms Shirley, Charles Dorsey, Ken Trass, Kirk Williams, Lillian Cruz, Bruce Hill, Regina Smith and Har- Page 2 topped off with a hearty breakfast. When the gathering was over Char- ley Fogg was having a Harley moment as you can see by the pictures, she expressed interest in getting one but Dennis quickly put water on that fire by making the statement were are you going to keep it. The short lived thrill was over and we made our way back down the road. 26 June We (Bruce, Lillian, Charley on her ride, and myself) made a road trip to visit MD Chapter H (Aberdeen MD). The weather was once again on our side and the trip up was awesome. I found out during the trip that Charley is not too fond of tunnels but she did a fantastic job making it through. Chapter H had a full house with lots of information to share but one ride in particular caught my interest and that was a combined ride by Chap(Continued on page 4)

3 Rider Education How to Tie Down a GL1800 Page 3 By Allen Smith GWRRA #28759 Lexington, Tennessee For several year, GWRRA s Gold Book has included a description of How To Tie Down Your Gold Wing. For the most part, the description was good for all Wings up until the 2001 GL1800. This is the way we tie our Tulsa Enterprises Gold Wing into the trailer and have been doing it this way for years; it is the most secure method we ve found. In our view, this is actually a superior method of tie-down, even for the GL1500. Materials Needed Three sets of Ancra soft ties. Three sets of Ancra adjustable tie-downs. A flat-bed trailer with places to attach tie-down hooks. 1. Push or ride your Gold Wing to the center of the flat-bed trailer. Park it on its sidestand. Put the transmission in gear to prevent forward or backward creep. 2. Loop one end of one soft tie around the left front fork and over the top of the lower triple tree. Slip one loop of the soft tie through the other, then snug it tight so the free loop is accessible. 3. Slip the hook of one adjustable tie-down through the free end of the soft tie. Connect the other end of the tie-down to the left front floor of the trailer at an angle to avoid contact with the motorcycle s bodywork. (See photo A.) The tie-down should attach to the trailer bed about 24 inches out from the bike s front wheel. 4. Tighten the adjustable tie-down to slightly compress the left front fork. 5. Repeat steps 2-4 on the right front fork side of the bike. Bike should now be supported vertically by the tie-downs. Raise the bike s sidestand. HERE IS WHERE THE PROCEDURE FOR THE GL1800 DIFFERS! The passenger handles on the GL1800 have rubber collars in the seat and are not designed to have tie-downs attached to secure the motorcycle there! Doing this could damage the bolt and/ or the threaded area of the frame. 7. Remove the Wing s side covers, attach a soft tie around the frame, hook the tie-down to the soft tie and pull slightly forward and out from the motorcycle. Repeat for the other side. (Photos B. and C.) 8. Attach another soft tie around the rear bag guard and SUB FRAME. (Photo D.) Then hook a tie-down to this soft tie and pull to the rear and outward. This will help to stabilize the motorcycle. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THIS TIE IS ATTACHED TO BOTH THE BAG GUARD AND SUB FRAME! If not using some sort of front wheel chock, it is important to secure the front wheel so it cannot turn. We caution you NOT to tie down a Gold Wing GL1800 using the handlebars or the engine guards or bag guards. (Even though Honda ties them in the crate with the engine and bag guards, they are not subjected to the same stress as the bouncing on a trailer.) They will break! Spanky will be getting that ride information out shortly to the rest of the chapters. I also got the chance to deliver on our commitment and deliver Glenda Milfred her trophy for her superb accomplishment during our Fun Day Bike Rodeo and she was totally surprised. The reason for the delay in presentation was because Chapter H has left before the Bike Rodeo trophy presentation started due to the pending inclement weather that was on the horizon that day, luckily our event was rain free. There Chapter Gathering was our first opportunity and prime time to deliver the trophy. We appreciate everyone s continued support and looking forward to a safe and Joyful riding season. 5 From Your Assistant Chapter Director With so much going on in the world these days, I ask that we each keep each other in prayer. On June 18, the Hive had a very busy day. Grayson and I ran the Chapter Gathering since Aaron was out of town due to the death of his father. The gathering went. After the Gathering, some of us headed to Bowie Town Center to support Kenneth Trass for a Chapter Motorist Awareness Event. We had three motorcycles participate: Kenneth Trass, Charles Johnson, and Grayson Dixon. Hampton and I also supported this event. Afterwards, I meet Grayson, Kirk, Maxye, Bruce and Regina at Rip s and we headed to MD-C s Pig Feast in Glen Burnie, Maryland. This is the home of Dave and Gloria Pumphrey. When we got there we met up with Charles & Shirley Dorsey and Harry Dockery. Shortly after the group that met up at Rips arrived, Kenneth Trass and his brother joined us. It was a very HOT and HUMID day. There was plenty of PIG and everything else. The corn was especially sweet this year. Both Tom and Carol Prentice, Chapter Directors were unable to participate as they were both recovering in the hospital. As of this article, both are home and doing better. Everyone had a great time! On June 25, Aaron, Dennis, Charley and I headed to Everett, PA to visit PA-V. They came down last year to visit us and we returned the favor. We are departing from Rip s Saturday, at 6 a.m. It was a beautiful ride up there. We couldn t have asked for a better day. They are located just a few miles down the road from Breezewood, PA. They gave us a warm welcome and were happy to see us. On June 26, Aaron, Bruce, Charley and I visited MD-H, Aberdeen, MD. We departed from Rip s Sunday, at 7 a.m. On July 5, the Chat-n-Chew was held at Smokey Bones, Bowie, MD. This was the second to the last meeting for those headed to Canada for the Region K and Region L rallies. Bruce, Sylvia, Isaac, Rich, June, Dennis and I had a good time. Stanley Greene, MD-I also joined us. On July 10, Bruce and I visited MD-C. It was great to see Tom and Carol Prentice. They were recovering well. Carol still has a few follow-up appoints left. Upcoming Events: August 4-6, Swedesboro, NJ, Bi-State Rally. Please come out to support Bob & Julie A Hearn Maryland s District Couple of the Year. They are participating in the Region B Couple of the Year Program. The selection process is on Saturday, August 6. It s approximately a 2 hour drive just across the Delaware Memorial Bridge (10 minutes from the bridge). This would a great day trip for you! October 6-9, Roanoke, VA, Rally in the Valley (Holiday Inn). This is the last rally of the year. Get your reservations the hotel rooms are going fast.
