2 By Michael Ehle President January right in the heart of ski season. I know members have been enjoying the slopes. The group of cars at my shop for the Bittersweet trip proved a full bus. Plus the great phone calls I ve been getting from out West, telling me how wonderful the skiing is. Some people just like to rub it in when you re hard at work and they re hard at play! I admit I m very envious of their exploits on the snow. As you read this Mogul, more fun is being had on the always popular CHAMPAGNE CRUISE!! What a party that is! Then the TOUCAN trip by Hal Atkinson on February 2nd; it still has spots available. Jaison Laker is running the Indiana Ski Council trip to Boyne on February 8 & 9. And Brad Lawson will be leading a day trip to Swiss Valley on February 16; let him know if you re interested. The final trip of the season will be our trip with the Chicago Metropolitan Ski Council to Aspen. I know Cousin Billy and I are going to finally get on our skis and explore the 4 mountain resorts. Hootie Hoot!! So all of you enjoy these great trips, doing what we love to do floating down a white cloud of fresh powder, with the sun tanning your cheeks, catching a little air off a mogul, gliding down through the trees smelling the pine forest to the open glades near the bottom and a sweet stop in front of your favorite watering hole GREAT RUN!! Please arrange your own transportation, arrive at the park around 2pm, sled until 4; then head to Mike & Jean Findley s lake home, 799 Gilead Shores Drive, for a hot chili dinner and hot drinks. If you d just like to attend the chili dinner, please feel free to arrive at the house sometime after 4pm. Directions take IN 120 west to Orland, IN; at the 4-way stop, turn right onto IN 327 (becomes Rierson Rd in Michigan) & head north about 4 miles; Gilead Shores is the next road past Booth Rd; turn right (east); yellow two-story house on right. 4 THE INDIANA SCHOOL FOR THE BLIND AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED NEEDS YOUR HELP The Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is nationally and internationally recognized for its excellence and best practices in educating children and young adults who are blind or have low vision. The School is a critical resource for Indiana s children who are blind or have low vision and the teachers, parents and caregivers who work with them. Every year, they educate hundreds of children and young adults ranging from 3 to 22 years old and living in all parts of Indiana, many of whom, due to severe or multiple disabilities, other schools in the state have difficulty serving or cannot serve. The School s focus as an education institution to this unique population is two fold: first, to teach blind students or those who have low vision how to master the Indiana core curriculum at the level identified on each student s identified education plan and also to work with each student through an expanded core curriculum, one that teaches students how to navigate their physical, social and personal world. To that end, the School has started a ski club! On February 24th, just one day after 40+ of our FWSC members head for Aspen, five teenage students of ISBVI will be heading out for their own adventure to the National Sports Center for the Disabled in Winter Park, Co. The NSCD raised the funds for these students to participate in a week long variety of activities including down hill & cross country skiing. The ISBVI is required to pay for airfare only and make sure that the students have the necessary clothing and incidental gear that makes winter sports comfortable and safe. The chosen students were required to submit a formal application, write an essay stating why they should be given the opportunity, be in good standing in their personal program and participate in physical training before the trip. All of them are from Indiana and first time skiers. One student thrives on physical activity and has a goal of being a Para Olympic athlete; one will be flying for the first time; one student has been described as being a diamond in the rough with the hope to build confidence. They are all worthy of the opportunity to fall in love with the sport on which we have built the Fort Wayne Ski Club. The School still needs $300 of the $2,300 airfare and they have started building a ski clothes/gear wardrobe for participating students to borrow. Enter FWSC If you wish to contribute to the airfare for this trip or trips to come, there are a couple of ways; Deb Farrell will be taking donations at the February 1st party or you can write a check to ISBVI and send it to the following address. 9 Check out the website March 30th at 5:30 p.m., meet at The Duce Hair Design, 920 SR 930 East, New Haven to convoy to the Hat Creek Arena in Van Wert, Ohio. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the rodeo show starting at 7:30 p.m. You can take a small cooler with you; beer is allowed. There is a nice concession stand for sandwiches and soda. Take a blanket for the bleachers & don't forget to wear that cowboy hat! ADULTS: $10 CHILDREN: $5 3 & UNDER: FREE For information, contact Michael Ehle By Friday night only 29 people had signed up; Trip Leader, Larry Trumbull was a little worried. When the bus rolled out Saturday morning, all but 2 of the 54 seats were filled!! Once again, driver Mike Buffalino delivered his precious cargo to the snowy hill in Otsego, MI. And once again, the clouds parted and the sun shone most of the day for the FWSC s first ski trip of the 2013 season. The evening brought the annual wrath of the bull in Kalamazoo and we were back in the Fort before 10:30 p.m. Bittersweet WAS a blast!! 9
