With winter break is coming up, this is most anticipated break of the school year. This is the longest break from school throughout the whole year, and the students and teachers definitely deserve it. Winter break starts on Friday, December 19th, and students will return on Monday, January 5th. Just a heads up students will be taking finals when school resumes in January. The finals schedule will be posted in the January newsletter. Throughout December, many holidays are celebrated, including Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Three Kings Day, St. Lucia Day, and Ramadan. Whatever holiday you may celebrate, we wish everyone a safe and relaxing break, and Happy Holidays! Throwback Game The First Annual Throwback Classic on November 28th marked one hundred years of basketball at Hebron High School, and was a matchup between the Kouts Mustangs and Hebron Hawks. For this game, both teams wore replicated uniforms of early teams at each school, and after the game, some of these jerseys were auctioned off. The cheerleaders from both teams also sported poodle skirts in honor of the throwback theme. The result of the game was a Hebron Hawk victory with a score of 66 to 44, breaking the Mustangs regular season winning streak against the Hawks. It was the first time that Hebron beat Kouts during the regular season since This game brought the Hawks to a record of two wins, now five since beating Lacrosse at the Homecoming Game last Friday, and they have yet been defeated.
P A G E 2 Homecoming Game Parents of seniors, if you are looking for scholarships, check out studentscholarships.org, Indiana's leading source for finding scholarship money. It's a search engine that sends you scholarships that matches your profile. Contact the guidance office to check out some of the scholarships they have to offer. This year s Homecoming Basketball Game was against the Lacrosse Tigers. With the decades theme, each corner of the gym was decorated with posters from each grade representing their chosen decade. The freshmen represented the 70s, the sophomores with the 50s, the juniors with the 80s, and the seniors with the 60s. During the Homecoming Olympics earlier that day, seniors took home first place with 31 points, bringing them the Class Spirit Stick. The freshmen surprisingly took second place with 23 points, the sophomores in third place with 20 points, and the juniors in fourth place with 17 points. Later that night, the girls team fought extremely hard throughout the game, eventually losing The boys, however, gained another victory, winning During halftime, the Hebron Dance Team put on an awesome show, dancing to a medley of Iggy Azalea songs. The Hawks had an awesome crowd Friday night, thank you to everyone who came out to show your support! Homecoming Dance A flashback to the roaring twenties the glitz and glam of a new age. This year s 2014 Homecoming theme was the Great Gatsby. STOP Club was in charge of putting on the dance, and Ken Veslick, the decorator, transformed the cafeteria into a vintage dance club. Also, this is the first year ever that there will be two 2014 homecoming dances since our homecoming dance last year was in January. The dance was held on Saturday, December 13 from 8 pm 11 pm. All the students were excited to get all dressed up and dance the night away. Also, Homecoming King and Queen, Jarrett Majcher and Daryn Torres, were crowned at the homecoming game against Lacrosse. Save the Date - Empty Bowls T H E H A W K S N E W S The 6th annual Hebron High School Empty Bowls Event will take place on February 6, 2014 from 4-7 pm. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Net proceeds go to fund the Hebron Country Pantry, so save the date and come join the fun for a great locally based cause!
V O L U M E 5, I S S U E 4 P A G E 3 Boys Basketball Hebron boys basketball is off to a great start for the season. They are 5-0 for the first time in 12 years. Bryce Hanaway, Ryan Schmidt, Donovan Friel, Spencer Sutherland, and Colton Jones are the starting players for the varsity team this year. They beat Covenant Christian for their season opening game on the 25th of November. Next, they defeated Kouts in the first annual Throwback Classic. After that they topped both Wheeler and Victory Christian. The boys also beat Lacrosse in the Homecoming Game on the 12th, bringing the undefeated team a record of 5 and 0. The season looks extremely promising so far and we wish the team the best of luck this year. Come out and support your Hebron Boys Basketball Team! Girls Basketball The Hebron Girls Basketball Team opened up the season with a tough Wheeler team on November 15th, following another big school, Lowell, on the 18th. With a record of 2-5, the Hebron Girls Basketball program has had a tough beginning to their season, playing teams such as Griffith, Bishop Noll, and a very good Lacrosse team. Their defense has improved tremendously and they are working strenuously on putting the ball in the whole. Before Christmas break, they will go head to head against two conference teams and are hoping to come out on top. Come out and support your Hebron Girls Basketball Team! Wrestling This year s wrestling team is looking forward to the season. It will be a re-building season for the boys this year. Danny Wallace is the team captain and Ryan Perez is the cocaptain. Both boys do an amazing job leading and supporting their team. The boys are working hard every day to improve and rebuild their team. Come out and show your support for Hebron Wrestling!
P A G E 4 Cheerleading Your Hebron Cheerleading Squad has shown great progress and spirit throughout the winter sports season. At each PCC basketball game, you can expect to see the girls and lifters out there on the court showing their school spirit and supporting the teams. Seniors this year are Samantha Brumley, and lifter Matt Frey. The team is extremely lucky to have these two seniors on the squad and will miss them dearly next year. The head coach, Brenda Sterk, has been working with the team each day to improve and come up with new cheers. We wish the Hebron Cheerleading Squad good luck this season. Dance This year the Hebron High School Dance Team has had a very busy season. They have been working on dances since summer and are still creating more each week. Senior Liz Fox and junior Maddie Sohaney are the captains of the team and the coaches are Julie Bernhardt and Michelle Bush. The team is super excited to start creating and learning the two dances that they have to prepare for NDA Nationals which they got a bid for this summer at their NDA Dance Camp at VU. Through sponsorship fundraisers and the Elementary School Dance Clinic they were also able to raise enough money for their trip to compete at Universal Studios in Florida in March of The Hebron High School Dance Team are having a great season and are having the time of their lives dancing, performing, bonding, and having wonderful successes. We wish them the best this dance season. National Honor Society T H E H A W K S N E W S This year, the National Honor Society is selling Baker s Square pies for their annual fundraiser. We will be using this money to make fleece blankets to donate to the Battered Womens Shelter. There are cards that will be sold throughout December, and whoever purchases these cards will be able to pick up their pie any time they want from a Baker s Square nearest to them. Also, we are getting ready for Salvation Army Bell Ringing which will be taking place throughout the month of December outside of Patz s Market. This is a great way for NHS to reach out to our community and raise money for a great cause. Also, a few members of NHS will be traveling to St. Teresa of Avila Church in Valparaiso to work at the soup kitchen sometime during this month to give food to those in need. Also, thank you to anyone who purchased gifts for the Angel Tree this year. Your donations are greatly appreciated by the children of the community.
V O L U M E 5, I S S U E 4 Hawk s Nest P A G E 5 The Hawk s Nest is once again carrying peppermint mocha cappuccino for the season! Just $1.00 a cup! Don t forget, we still carry all your school supply needs such as notecards, folders, pens, poster board, and many other needs that may come up during the course of the day. We also deliver during SRT! The store is located at the concession stand and is open mornings from 7:10 to 7:40! The Business Professionals of America is having a fundraiser for their trip to Indianapolis for the State Leadership Conference. We are selling Little Caesar s pizza kits through January 15. Call on a BPA member, or Mrs. King-Licht at kingl@hebronschools.k12.in.us The Art Department really needs plastic baby food jars for their various paints and mixes! If you have these available, please send them in to Mrs. Jania! Kiner s Corner We ve been hard at work in the media center. Student and adult aides have helped Mrs. Kiner move the classic books to the area where the periodicals were once located. This was the perfect place because periodicals are no longer subscribed to. So, what was once wasted space has become useful again. The classics are noted with a yellow sticker by the barcode for fiction and a blue sticker for non -fiction. If a catalog search is done it will show up as CL FIC LEE. In an effort to eliminate paper cost, the media center is doing their part. The blue binder that was once created to help identify Reading Counts books is slowly being replaced by colored dots on the spines of books. Each RC book will have a green sticker for fiction and an aqua sticker for non-fiction. It will also include the lexile. In the back of the book, there will be a red RC with a number. This indicates the number of points. So, the blue binder will remain until all books have been transferred over to this new system. Any new book coming in will be done this way.
The Science Club is now in the process of planning a dodgeball fundraiser tournament for after Winter Break. The price to be able to compete in the tournament, the date, and all other information will be released at a later date when available. The money raised from the History Club A new club to Hebron this year, History Club is run by Mr. Eriks and Mr. Witzel, and they are looking forward to doing some very exciting things. History Club is planning on making family trees to learn more about their ancestry and taking a trip to Medieval Times in Chicago soon to experience the culture of the Renaissance time period. This new club is looking forward to planning more events throughout the year and learning as much as they can about history. Science Club tournament will go towards different activities for the Science Club throughout the year. It would be great to start planning your team in advance! The Science Club is also planning on building their own computer and starting an aquarium.
