Thanks to all who participated and attended. A special thanks to our Board and especially to Tina Pena who worked so hard to make it happen. Our membership has been growing significantly. We thank all our members who have promoted the POS and invited their friends and family to come to our meetings. When you see a new member, be sure to introduce yourself and welcome them. The photo contest was spectacular. Thank you for sharing your fantastic photos with all of us. Congratulations to the winner, Lynn Molitor who conveniently won a gift certificate to our July speaker, Broward Orchid Supply Sandi Jones of Broward Orchid Supply is the orchid curator of the Bonnet House, one of the largest and oldest orchid collections in the southeast. BOS has many years of experience and holds lectures on the proper care and treatment of orchids. Sandi s lecture will be specifically addressing pest, diseases and treatment. You may bring your problem plants in for evaluation but please seal them in a clear plastic bag. Jot down your questions and be prepared to take notes. Spring/summer is a time for repotting, pest and disease control. Get your list of supplies together and go on their web site to place your order early. 5 July Program Prevention and Diagnosis of Orchid Pests and Disease will be presented by Sandi Jones of Broward Orchid Supply Our speaker this month will be Sandi Jones owner of Broward Orchid Supply, Orchid Curator at the Bonnet House Museum & Garden in Ft. Lauderdale and fellow orchid hobbyist with about 400 orchids of her own. As a fellow hobbyist, she understands how hard it can be to find the products that are needed for growing healthy, vigorous orchids. The goal of Broward Orchid Supply is to cater to the hobbyist by providing a wide variety of orchid growing supplies, as well as providing education on how to use them. At this lecture, you will learn how to diagnose orchid pests and diseases. From bacterial and fungal rots to insects, such as thrips, scale and spider mites. Learn how to identify the culprits, what products to use to get rid of them, as well as what to do to prevent them in the future. Orchids may be brought in for diagnosis, but must be placed in plastic bags to prevent contaminating other plants. Orchid supplies will be available for sale at the meeting, but, of course, there s not room to bring some of everything, so members are requested to call or ahead to place specific orders: or browardorchidsupply@comcast.net. Note: The products that will be brought will be directed towards the lecture topic so please call ahead for potting media, pots/baskets, mounting materials and wire products. Animal Rescue Phyllis Durst is still collecting old towels and blankets for animals in rescue shelters. If you have any towels or blankets that you would like to get rid of, please bring them to our meeting Tues. and give them to Phyllis.
