They did indeed do it up Okie Style! Yes, it was a fine spring weekend in Oklahoma. The convention center facilities were more than impressive. Dance floors were laid over carpet for smooth dancing movement and worked well. The callers showed enthusiasm, and kept an upbeat tempo. The attached host hotel was very convenient. I didn t even have to go outside to get from my room to the dance halls! In back of the convention center was a beautiful park area with patios, waterfalls, and flowers. WOW! The General Meeting was a high point for me! Many attended the meeting and offered ideas to enhance future festival experiences. When leaders of other organizations came up to me after the meeting asking if they could use some of the innovative ideas that were presented in their organizations, I just smiled with pride that it was HASSDA

members that came up with these wonderful ideas and said ABSOLUTELY! It was truly a think tank and to each of you that shared an idea and/or offered a solution to a situation, I thank you for making this YOUR organization and taking it to the next level of enjoyment. It was voted to change the mainstream hall to a Smoothie Hall This hall will offer smooth and easy mainstream, smooth plus, and a peppy upbeat mainstream tip in alternating fashion. Giving a dance style for everyone s abilities and tastes. We will still have our energetic Plus Hall and the intricate Plus DBD/Advance Hall for those that like the more challenging dance levels. Another new idea for the 2013 Festival will be to promote singles to mingle. Each night the man and woman who dances with the most partners (must be a different partner to be counted) will be awarded a free registration to the 2014 Festival. In case of a tie a drawing will be held for the registrations. A special THANKS to all that volunteered to be state or area coordinators. We have listed their information in this newsletter under coordinators. This is an essential position within HASSDA. Anyone willing to help in this capacity, please let a Board member know. The job entails making HASSDA Festival flyers available at your area dances and announcing the HASSDA Festival whenever possible at the dances you attend, thus promoting HASSDA and square dancing! It was heartwarming to get to see so many friends and make new ones. To my new friend that can do cartwheels across the dance floor (she proved it too!), I have to say WAHOO! Just watching you dance made me smile! To my corner that surprised me more than once by pulling me through when I was lost Thank you! To the many dancers that took the time to let me know how much they were enjoying the Festival and the weekend, THANK YOU! Already plans are being made for the 2013 Spring Festival at the K- State Union Ballroom in Manhattan, KS. ALL WOOD FLOORS! A stellar line up of national callers with Mike Hogan, Tim Marriner, and Ken Burke will treat us with three levels of dancing. Jim and Georgianne Couey will be leading us through the rounds. Come early and enjoy HASSDA s own Chris Wildhagen and Marilyn Graham at the Trail- In Dance on Thursday night. AND don t forget to look for a K- Laire Dancer. We will be hosting a reunion for this former K- State Square Dance Club along with the festival and it promises to bring some new excitement to our squares. Looking for you in my square! ~Maye Randall Green Images HASSDA Board and Callers: Maye Wegner (top row) Danny Payne, Mike Bramlett, Jeff Holley, Curtis Northrop (middle row) Lee Williams, Christine Batz, Georgianne & Jim Couey, Bobby Willis, Dee Proctor (front row)

Hello Dancers! I would like to again thank each and every one that attended HASSDA 2012 and made it so much fun. I considered it an honor and a privilege to be able to host the Festival this year. I would especially like to thank Ron Holland for bringing the flooring and the great crew that helped to put it down and take it back up. Special thanks goes to my Treasurer Louise Aldridge for keeping all of the money and numbers straight. I could not have accomplished this without her help. I sincerely wish more people would consider hosting this festival. It is a lot of work, but the rewards are more than worth the work. I have had the opportunity of traveling to so many great Square Dance Clubs to promote this Festival, in and out of state, and have met so many wonderful dancers that it has made the work all worthwhile. In attending HASSDA 2012 you had the opportunity of having your picture taken with that special someone, or just seeing the photographer ( Randall & Kimberly Green ) taking photos of the Festival. He has a great site set up for your viewing and where you can purchase a memory of your weekend. This gallery will only be available for a short time, so please click onto his site to check it out. ~Dee Proctor, HASSDA Vice President Hello HASSDA friends, Randall Green Images- Distinctive Images Photography was delighted to have been given the opportunity to cover your recent HASSDA festival at the Reed Center in Midwest City. 4 In March there were many who attended the annual HASSDA Festival in Midwest City, OK, which is just outside of Oklahoma City. It was at a beautiful new Sheridan Hotel that had all of the right accommodations. Everyone I visited with were delighted over their rooms, the food, and of course the dancing. The callers were all great. Some of the callers were new to me because they were 'local', and most of us were not local, so it made for great dancing and a super fun event. The HASSDA meeting produced some new changes for future dances that I believe will be very good. you will be reading and hearing about those changes in the upcoming months, so 'stay tuned in' for those announcements. All those that helped put this event together did an outstanding job and my hat is off to them! Sincerely, a fellow dancer, Jane Anderson-Tahlequah, OK Candid shots courtesy of Randall Green Images We want to thank the committee that put on another wonderful HASSDA weekend. The callers and cuers were exceptional and the dancers were outstanding. We had a great time renewing old friendships and making new ones. The accommodations were well worth the money; rooms, eats and dance floor all added to the overall experience. We were also excited to hear that next year s dance will be in Manhattan. We met at the K- Laires square dance club at K-State. We currently dance with several people who were once K- Laires. It will be a great opportunity to re-connect with others who were also members. The wood floor in the Union ballroom is a wonderful place to dance. Combine that with the terrific callers and cuers that HASSDA is known for and the weekend can t be beat. Once again, thanks for a wonderful weekend and we look forward to seeing everyone at next year s dance in Manhattan, Kansas. ~ Dan and Helen Gough

HASSDA 2012 OKIE STYLE with Alleyna Patterson Hi, I m Alleyna and I m 10 years old. My mom and I started square dancing in September, We were really, really excited about HASSDA, because it was our 1 st big event! I hope you enjoy reading about our trip to HASSDA (and decide to go if you ve never been)! Thursday in the morning we packed all our clothes for HASSDA and then we had to load. That is really, really, really, really hard with a small car! After loading our suitcases and hanging bags, the trunk was so full that we had to stuff 4 petticoats in the back seat! With everything loaded, we hit the road! When we finally arrived at the hotel and checked in, I got to swim. Next we went to eat at Primo s Italian with a friend from our square dance club. The food at Primo s is sooooooooooooooo good! Then it was time to dance at the Trail In Dance. Everyone was twirling and laughing and having a blast! After the dance we got comfy and played some games back at our room. That was Thursday! Friday we got up at 9:00 a.m. and went swimming again in the hotel. That was awesome! Next we went to lunch at Applebee s with my partner and his family best food ever! At 2:00 p.m. it was time to dance again. After we had dinner, we went back to the hotel and got all gussied up. Next, I had to find my partner, Alex, (that is very difficult when his phone goes dead). After I finally found him, we danced in the big hall. There were at least 15 squares! You know how they have those pot drawings? I won! I won! I won the $185 pot at HASSDA!!! At the after party I got to teach my partner how to 2 step that was interesting! Friday ended when we returned to our room, ungussied, and fell into bed! Saturday I got up at 6:30 a.m. to swim. Next we went back to our room and put on prairie skirts. At 9:00 a.m. we danced an Intro to Plus workshop that was very fun. Later, we ate lunch with friends. After we got back to the room we had to get gussied up again. We experienced some wardrobe malfunctions but we made it work. When we finally got down stairs, my partner and I got our pictures taken so cool! Then we danced and twirled and laughed and just had a great time! "P.S. A little tip to the ladies - don't dance in pantyhose without shoes - it can end VERY badly!" That was my trip to HASSDA! Hope to C U N A soon! - Alleyna Alleyna with her partner Alex. Photos courtesy of Randall Green Images

THREE GENERATIONS OF SQUARE DANCERS! By Lee Williams Three generations attended the 2012 HASSDA Festival! Art Meyers of Oklahoma City, even though in a wheelchair, made his presence known. He continually circled the dance floors visiting with old friends and making new ones. Art has been dancing since 1946, having taken his lessons at age 14. Square dancing, still racing strong in his blood, has been passed down to his family. On one of the visits I had with him, he pointed out his son and daughter- in- law, Daniel and Lisa, dancing in a nearby square and told me that his grandson was also in attendance. I learned that it was his grandson Alex (pictured on previous page with Alleyna) with whom I had danced two plus tips earlier. Where else but square dancing can one find such joyful family fun? Yes square dancing is a family affair! Art Meyers receiving a warm square dance hug. Daniel and Lisa (on left) marching in the Grand March. Photos by Randall Green Images IOWA STATE CONVENTION By Jo Saffel Our Iowa State Convention was a good time. It was well organized and attended by more people than in the past few years (796). I hope this trend continues. The Ghost Riders Band was a drawing point and being in the Quad Cities; I am sure we attracted more out of state people to our convention. There were many Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin and Nebraska dancers represented and even a couple from California. There have been years where we only get Iowans. One of the downers was the distance from the Plus hall to the rest of the halls. It was a long walk inside a skywalk or a short drive. We need to think about those things for our dancers, because our people are older and dancing is what they like to do, but is sometimes all they can muster. To walk a distance to get there takes the energy they need to dance. A big thank you goes out to Don and Natalie and Doug Sprosty and their committees for such a well organized convention. WICHITA SPRING FESTIVAL By Tammy and Bill Gough Wichita, KS was the scene of a great festival last April 20 and 21. Area callers entertained the dancers on Friday night, and Saturday featured our national talent, caller Lottie Ainsworth of LA, and cuers Jerral and Marilyn Waguespack of TX. Dancers were excited, and most were still around for the last tip. Dancing included round dance workshops, a plus dance, and lots of fun and challenging mainstream. The festival is held in the fall and spring every year. The Fall Festival will October 26 & 27, Brad Caldwell will be the featured caller and David & Terri Meyer will present the round dance program.
