2 BONDING TOURS: HIGHLIGHTS 2014 Grade 9 Magoebaskloof Tour Memorable Moments The Grade 9 s went to Magoebaskloof Adventures. The programme included river tubing and a canopy tour. Most of our time was spent hiking to the summit of Serala. The group were expected to carry all their own tents and bedding up the mountain and they had to cook all their own food. This tour was a coming of age experience. Following are some quotes from the group on their memorable moments: I liked cliff jumping Liezl The hike was the most difficult and rewarding thing we ve ever accomplished Sam, Ash and Shiana I loved the sunset Candice Walking up the really steep mountain before lunch. Walking through the river with our shoes off was AWESOME!!! The best part was eating food! Chloe I Loved the exhilarating feeling and adrenaline that flows through your body when cliff jumping and rapid tubing Kristin Walking up the mountain with the bag that was very heavy Liezl I loved doing the river rafting but it was terrifying. Today s hike was a lot of work, but it felt so nice to accomplish it. Shiana Today was such an interesting experience! It was a lot of work, but it was wonderful to accomplish something difficult! Ashleigh Getting to know everyone while hiking up to camp. Thank goodness I have Cass to make me dinner Hayley The bum sliding was amazing Matthew We summited a mountain Candice Had a great time hiking to the top of the mountain, and looking at the second biggest indigenous forest in South Africa. We had an awesome time going on the bum slides. James and Tatenda When we got to the top of the mountain and looked at the view Liezl I made it to the top of a mountain and back to our camp Hayley I made it to the top of the mountain and realised that I had to come back down. Ayrton When Hayley saw a baby puff adder and I was like back away slowly and can anyone speak Parsel-tongue Ayrton I just stood on the summit of a mountain in Limpopo and had many thoughts and how it was a privilege to have the chance to view the amazing cultural land of Limpopo. Let me not forget that I saw a snake a very young snake but still very poisonous. Sphiwo We walked all the way down to the bottom of the mountain and we went ziplining which was very fun Liezl We overcame a fear of canopy touring!! Mckinley Went for the best zip-line tour (canopy tour) ever in my life. Not to waste anyone s time. I m just gonna say that this whole challenge hike tour and camp has been great. What amazing hospitality and facilities. Thanx Tatenda Now I can actually see I hiked a mountain and it felt like a great achievement Cole and Dylan I actually can t believe that I hiked up a huge mountain. Yohhhhh Shiana Getting back down the mountain was tough but once we got back to base camp and realised we were sleeping on flat ground and had showers (but no hot water) we were more than happy to be back Hayley Sprinting that last 1 km with Paige all for the promise of a cold refreshing shower Kristin RHWE Issue: 5 Friday, 14 th February 2014 Page 2

4 Dear Parents It has come to our attention that there has been several cases of head lice amongst children at the school. Anyone who comes in close contact with head lice, including contaminated clothing and other belongings, is at high risk for acquiring head lice. So it is easy to transmit head lice from one person to another. Early Learning through to Senior Preparatory children (3-10 years of age) and their families are infected most often. Please can we ask all parents to keep an eye out for the following signs and take steps to prevent and/or treat the condition: A tickling feeling of something moving in the hair Itching Sore on the head (caused by scratching) Irritability Treatment Remove all clothing and wash straight away(separately) Apply Lice medicine also called pediculicide according to the labels instructions If the child has long hair you may need a second bottle WARNING: do not use a cream rinse or shampoo/conditioner before using lice medicine Do not rewash hair for 2-3 days after treatment If live lice is still found eight to twelve hours after treatment but moving more slowly do not treat again Comb dead and remaining live lice out of the hair with Nit (head lice egg) comb provided in medicine packages Treat again in 7-10 days Check for two to three weeks until you sure that all lice and Nits are gone. As per school policy, if contaminated, please provide a clearance certificate to allow your child to return to school. Regards Mariette Robertson Reddam House Waterfall Estate Medic Medical Support at Reddam Mariette Robertson has been appointed as the Reddam House Medic. She is an Intermediate Life Support Medic and has been worked for Netcare 911 for the past 6 years. Mariette and her husband were recently blessed with an amazing little boy, Joshua. 6 The Scout Movement has been in existence for over 100 years and currently has twenty million members in nearly two hundred countries Worldwide. In most countries it is no longer Boy Scouts, but recognizes that all young people can benefit from its training in good citizenship, leadership and self-reliance. Scouting in South Africa is open to both boys and girls. Each year to commemorate Baden-Powell s Birthday, members are encouraged to wear correct school uniform, but would request on 21 st February that student be allowed to wear their scout uniform instead if they so wish.
