Most of our buildings are now almost 60 years old and, while our programs and methodologies are contemporary and our student outcomes excellent, the aging facilities place limitations on some of the programs we wish to initiate. We are certainly grateful for the State and Federal funds we have received for the construction of our Gymnasium. With construction set to commence by the end of this month we anticipate we will be using this impressive facility at this time next year. The gym funding, however, was an election promise rather than being part of an overall Master Plan for the rejuvenation of the College. Major construction in schools only occurs when it is part of a master plan approved by DE&T. We have, previously, been involved in the early stages of developing a master plan, but DE&T has not facilitated any progress in this..leaving us with no future plans, as other schools nearby receive generous support. We intend continuing to appeal to both DE&T and the State Government in the coming month or two, in an effort to not only have our need recognised (as it has been over the past few years), but also that this need translates to concrete support through funding proposals in the next Budget. Our current and future College community and staff deserve better. Andrew Sloane, Principal 1

2 YEAR 12 NEWS FAREWELL TO THE CLASS OF 2017 Our Year 12 celebrated the completion of 6 years of secondary schooling last week. Their final day started with a BBQ breakfast on the VCE deck. Dress Up Day on Monday saw a fantastic array of costumes on display. Characters ranged from a large crew of Spartans, Buzz and Woody from Toy Story, Fairies, Emojis, Forest Gump, Cluedo characters, the Baywatch crew, various Police and Sherriff officers to name a few. Students then competed for the Norwood Cup in a series of challenge games on the hardcourts. The challenges proved to be more difficult than normal in their full costumes! Games included, Jockeys Up, Human Sushi and Shark! then concluded with a mass Tug of War challenge between each house team. The Norwood Cup was ultimately won by Maroondah! A Good Luck and Farewell banner prepared by the whole year was signed and hand printed by everyone. Students then attended a Whole New World presentation by Sonia Karras. Sonia runs through scenarios and strategies for managing themselves in their immediate post school life. Students universally acknowledge the honesty and freshness of this presentation and its value and relevance to them. During their final assembly on Tuesday, the audience was treated to a variety of highly entertaining performances by Jacob Hill and Ryan Brook. Jacob and Ryan performed a Pink Floyd and Red Hot Chilli Peppers number on the drums and then a medley from our Year 12 Music Class of Mark Sternar, Emma Hart, Ryan Mooney, Arianne Gibson, Connor Higgins, Keeley Webster. These performances were all of a very high quality and were received with much applause by the audience of Year 10 and 11 students and teachers. We were welcomed to the assembly by the College Captains, Jaymie Burgess and Lachlan MacDonald, who thanked all those that had helped the students get through not only Year 12 but all of their 6 years at Norwood. The Funniest Man in Year 12, Luke O Brien, entertained the audience with his dry humour by reminiscing with some funny anecdotes and memories from this group s time at Norwood, from Year 7 through to Year 12. Din Avdic gave a heartfelt and at times humorous take on what it means to be an Australian, he is very thankful that his family are now residents of Australia and no longer in their war torn homeland. College Vice-Captain Nathalia Amato spoke warmly of the arrival of the Parkwood students to Norwood in 2013 and how they have made a strong and very successful transition into the Norwood community. All students then assembled on the stage to sing Stand by me. Then made their way from the hall through a collection of staff members who enthusiastically congratulated the students for making it through this really tough year. One of the highlights was releasing a sea of purple and gold helium balloons to commemorate the end of their final year at Norwood, followed by a very social morning tea with the College staff in the Library. On behalf of the College community, we would like to commend all the Year 12 for their efforts and good will over the year and the way in which they celebrated their last weeks at Norwood in a respectful, good spirited and reflective manner. We wish all of our students good luck for the upcoming exam period and their VCE and VCAL results. Thank you to all the College staff who assisted with the assembly and morning tea to ensure our Year 12s received such a positive send off. 3 SCIENCE NEWS YEAR 8 EP LA TROBE UNIVERSITY MASTER CLASS, FORENSIC SCIENCE. Year 8 EP students and selected students from the other Year 8 classes attended La Trobe University, Forensic Science Department to participate in the Hands on Forensic Science workshop. Students will be studying Forensics in Year 9 and these workshops were a jump start to next year s topic as well as their first experience at a University. The workshops consisted of a crime scenario and a suspect s explanation against police evidence. Students used microscopes to analyse hair and pollen samples, extracted and ran DNA profiles from suspected weapons and compared all these results to forensic data bases used by the forensic scientists at the Police Laboratories, adjacent to the University. Students also extracted and identified blood samples and were then able to provide solid scientific evidence for court, indicating the suspect as having fabricated their police statement and evidence pointing to a suspect s guilt. Students were then treated to a seminar presented by a Medical and Research Scientist on the extraction and characterisation of ancient DNA from extinct animals as well as direct genomic comparisons between modern humans and Neanderthal DNA. Alex Papanotas, Science Coordinator YEAR 10 ADVANCED SCIENCE GENETICS Students in Advanced Science are currently studying Genetics and Human Inheritance. As part of their studies, they are given kits of Vegetable Babies with various alternate alleles or variations of traits such as gender, hair colour, hand and foot type as well as eye and hair colour. Students do tactile test crosses between variations of parents and analyse the phenotypes and genotypes of the offspring, getting an idea of how genes from each parent are sorted during reproduction and expressed via dominance and recessiveness of the alternate gene alleles. Nicole Milne, Senior Chemistry Teacher VISIT TO THE AUSTRALIAN SYNCHROTRON Year 11 Physics students went to the Australian Synchrotron on Thursday 26 October. After discussing about various features of the synchrotron, students had a tour of the Synchrotron facility. They observed, how the synchrotron light which is very bright collimated polarised beam of X-Rays, is produced by accelerating the electron very close to speed of light. Some students have shown a very keen interest in this facility s research program During the lab session, students performed experiments on effect of electric and magnetic field on the electron beam. After lunch in the synch café, students performed experiments on effect of velocity on electrons in magnetic field and tried to focus the electrons using solenoids and quadrupoles. 4 SPORTS NEWS 2017 SCHOOL SPORTS VICTORIA (SSV) STATE TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS On Monday October 23, Norwood had 2 students representing the college at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park, for the School Sports Victoria State Track and Field competition. What a privilege it was for both Mrs Creemers and Miss Munford to be there to watch you both compete throughout the day! It was a rewarding day and a great experience for all involved. Congratulations to Rhys Higgins in 7F for his achievements in the SSV State Track and Field Championships. Rhys started the day competing in the multiclass Shot Put Event, where his best throw was recorded as 5.96m. Before the results were even released he needed to head off to the Long Jump Pit to compete in the age multiclass event. After a few warm up jumps his first jump resulted in his best distance of 2.01m. Competing in the multiclass event means that a number of equations are needed, taking into consideration different competitors classification and then give final placings. After a long wait, Rhys was given the fantastic news that he had placed 3rd in the Long Jump and 1st in the Shot Put, making him State School Champion in the age group multiclass event. This is an incredible effort, especially as Rhys has only just come into this age group and was competing against students up to Year 10. Over Cup weekend Rhys will compete in the All Schools Championships back at Lakeside, we wish him the best of luck in his event. Tim O Brien of 11G competed in the year old 1500m walk and finished in 4th place with a PB time of 8.15! Fantastic effort Tim. You represented the college with pride and should be so very proud of yourself. Congratulations to all SSV State Track and Field Competitors. A big thank you to all of the families who were there to support our students throughout the day. It really was a wonderful day. Go Norwood! Jane Creemers and Tara Munford, Physical Education/Health and Human Development Teachers STATE GRAND FINAL SENIOR GIRLS CRICKET BEST TEAM IN VICTORIA! Tuesday 17 October, was indeed a most memorable day for our loyal, skilled and determined Norwood Champions! Our Semi Final in the morning saw us pitted against Mildura Senior Secondary College. The game started 20 minutes late as their plane was delayed at Mildura by 30 minutes! They won the toss and decided to bowl. After our 20 overs we were 5/112. We had been 5/64, so this was a great result. In the Grand final we won the toss and decided to bowl as we like chasing a target. Their two top batters scored 17 and 15; their next top was 4. All our 5 bowlers, bowled 4 overs and all bowled well. Emma's figures were 0/11; Caitlin 0/22; Ash 1/7; Claire 2/9 and once again Tess was awesome: 5 wickets for 10 runs...in a State Grand Final... a memory for a lifetime! 4

5 Emma grabbed 2 catches and Becky and Olivia had 1 each. After the 20 overs, Buckley Park was 8/66 (Ash bowled the 20th over and it was a maiden, a perfect finish!) Ash and Claire began the chase and, although Ash was unfortunately run out, Claire went on to make 37* and Tess 12*. We were 1/68 off 10 overs and thus had a comprehensive win by 9 wickets with 10 overs to spare! Back to Back State Champions...never to be forgotten! GIRLS SENIOR CRICKET TEAM MEMBERS: Ash Allsopp, Emma Beer, Olivia Coletta, Bronte Criddle, Maddie Edwards, Caitlin Jackson, Tess Mathews-Morrow, Becky Petty, Ebony Pentland, Claire O Brien, Amy Woolard, Maddie Robins, Shae Copley and Elise Mortimer - Injured. EASTERN REGION TABLE TENNIS CHAMPIONS: Wednesday 25 October, was a thriller of a day! All concerned are no doubt very proud of all the girls who attended Kilsyth Stadium. Game 1 against Templestowe, Norwood won 6 rubbers to nil and did not lose a game. Our singles players for the day were Jaclyn Bevan, Alicia Pumpa, Haylee Landi and Meg Sparkes. Our first doubles were Jaclyn and Alicia, our second doubles were Haylee and Helen Zhang. Game 2 was against Vermont. After the singles it was 2 rubbers all, with victories to Alicia and Haylee. Jaclyn and Alicia were our first doubles again and our second doubles this time were Haylee and Jocelyn Dexter. Unfortunately, Vermont won both comfortably 66 points to 45, so finished victorious, 4 rubbers to 2. We realised it was still possible to have a rematch in the Grand Final if we could defeat Balwyn (who we defeated in last year's Grand Final) and then defeat the winner of the other side of the draw in the cross over final. Game 3 saw Jaclyn paired with Jocelyn in Doubles 1 and Alicia paired with Haylee in Doubles 2. The new combinations proved effective as both doubles won against Balwyn following the 4 singles victories: Norwood 6 rubbers, Balwyn 0. And so, after finishing runners up to Vermont in our pool, we proceeded to the Semi Final against the other pool's dominant winner, Box Hill Senior College, who had not lost a game in their 3 lead up contests. We kept the same line up as against Balwyn and won 4 rubbers to 2, with both doubles again successful, following wins to Jaclyn and Alicia in the singles. We had made it to our 2nd Grand Final at Eastern Region in 2 years and were thankful to get another crack against Vermont. Haylee and Meg won their singles. It was 2 rubbers all and down to the doubles! Jaclyn and Jocelyn were most competitive and just went down by one game (23). On Court 2, Alicia and Haylee were showing top form and won 11-3; 11-6; Following careful checking by both sides, it was declared that both teams had won 3 rubbers and the games count was 10 to Vermont and 11 to Norwood. We had won by ONE GAME. Now it is off to MSAC again! CONGRATULATIONS to all and a big thank you to Ebony, who umpired, scored and encouraged everyone all day. Mick Wilson, Girls Cricket and Table Tennis Coach YEAR 7 GIRLS EMR BASKETBALL On Friday 27 October, our Year 7 Girls' Basketball team played in the Eastern Metropolitan Region Basketball Competition. Every team member contributed to the teams' success and they all demonstrated excellent skills, teamwork and sportsmanship and it was great to see everyone score points in the tournament. 5

6 The team finished first in the pool competition beating Templestowe, Mount Waverley and Balwyn to progress to the final. They played against Rowville in the final and put up a great fight. They remained within 2 points of them for most of the game, however, they were able to get ahead of us towards the end. We finished runners-up in the Region which is a fantastic effort. Well done, Teagan Hudson, Paris Gebel'lamb, Zoe Servinis, Chelsea Goetz, Haylee Landi, Bella Whelan, Bree Whitehead and Elise Prunty. Thank you to Jaymee Tough of Year 11 for doing a great job coaching the team! Thank you also to the all families for supporting the team. Leisa Beggs, PE Teacher and Basketball Coach EMR INTERMEDIATE BOYS CRICKET EMR Round Robin Game 1 - Norwood vs Heathmont Norwood batted first with 5/155 from 20 overs. Wil Parker made a classy 112, Hayden Paterson 15 and Jay Winneke 14. Heathmont were all out for 65. Shaun Sobti 2-2 off 3 overs, Charlie Power 2-5 off 2 overs and Harrison Low 2-0 off 1 over. Game 2 - Norwood vs Balwyn High Norwood batted first 3/138 off 20 overs. Hayden Paterson made 55 not out, Wil Parker and Jay Winneke both 34. Balwyn High 6/133, Shaun Sobti 2-6 off 2 overs, Jake Guerin 2-17 off 4 overs. It was a great win by the boys in both games. Winning these games put Norwood into the Eastern Metro Final at Hislop Park in Balwyn. EMR Final Norwood vs Brentwood Norwood bowled first with Brentwood scoring 4/196 off 20 overs. Unfortunately we had 2 opportunities but failed to capitalise as we dropped catches on one player who scored an unbeaten 136. Well done to Shaun Sobti, Charlie Power and Hayden Patterson each taking a wicket. It was then Norwoods time to bat, after 20 overs the score was 8/129. Wil Parker made an aggressive 56, with Arthur McCartin making a quick 23. A great effort from the team to be Intermediate Boys Eastern Metropolitan Runners Up. Scott Johnson, Boys Cricket Coach 6

7 ART NEWS SPRING SHOW Year 11 and 12 Studio Art students proudly show cased their years work to family and friends in our Annual Spring Show. Congratulations to all the students on your hard work throughout the year to make this a show to remember. A special mention to Renee Collom for her commitment to Studio Art this year, her artworks are well resolved and took pride of place on the walls, as well as a big thank you for her assistance in setting up the show. Sophia Knight s amazing talent didn't go unnoticed by anyone. You could not help but imagine her 5 extra large paintings for sale in any large Commercial Gallery - Wow! A big Congratulations to Adele Edwards, who won the Principal s award for her highly detailed Zebra drawing. Her hard work and hours and hours of persistence throughout the year shone through in a wonderful display of beautiful animals. It has been a privilege to share this journey with you all. I wish you all the very best in your future endeavours. Information and Work Placement forms will be provided to Year 9 students in their Mentoring session next week, 8 November. Students will be encouraged to speak with their parents/guardians to discuss possible contacts to approach, for this Work Placement. It is advisable to start looking for a placement now as it can take longer than expected to find an employer willing to provide work experience.
