1 Autumn Term Issue 536 Fairfield Prep School, Leicester Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire. LE11 2AE Friday 7 December 2018 From the Headmaster The Christmas Spirit is certainly alive and well here at Fairfield. Having witnessed the children perform during the Pre Prep performances this week, not forgetting the children who sang at LHS s Carol Service on Monday and Tuesday, we are well on the way to finishing the term on a spectacular high. With our Upper Prep children poised for their Carol Services at All Saints with Holy Trinity, Loughborough next week, (Year 3 & 4 Tuesday and Year 5 & 6 Wednesday), the children will have definitely earned their Christmas lunch on Thursday! Although term finishes next Friday at 12 noon, the staff and I are busily preparing for our final assembly, where we will be presenting a whole host of awards across the school, celebrating a whole host of pupil achievement, both in and out of the classroom since September. The Reception team shall also be saying a fond farewell to Miss Usher, who will be moving on to pastures new, having been at Fairfield for 13 years. I would like to publicly thank her for her past service to Fairfield, for which the staff and I are truly grateful, and of course to wish her well in the future. A group of children in Year 5 and 6 are taking part in an e-twinning project with schools in Poland, Turkey, Spain and Ireland. We were delighted this week to receive Christmas cards from our new friends.

They played two matches and obviously started to tire in the second game but all played with magnificent courage and intensity throughout. Tackling was consistently good and the boys also began to pass the ball well which was good to see. The main difference between the teams was the ability to react quickly to rucks and to protect the ball in contact. Both matches were lost but the tries mainly came from situations when the ball was on the floor and the opposition reacted first to break away. Yesterday s opposition had lost only to Spratton Hall all term and we know from last week, how good they were. It has been a pleasure to work with this lovely group of young men and I am sure that if they continue their current rate of progress they will do even better next season. Mr Wilbraham. On Wednesday 5 December the U11 Rugby team played away at Witham Hall. Once again Fairfield started slowly and Witham scored three quick tries. Fairfield defended well and were committed in contact but Witham demonstrated great ball handling, good counter rucking technique and well developed game awareness which resulted in them scoring two more tries before half time. As it was the final game of the season the boys were determined to finish on a positive note and that is exactly what they did. Fairfield closed the space more effectively and this resulted in Witham making a few mistakes. This then led to Fairfield scoring a well deserved try of their own. Witham, however, had the final say with another well worked try. The final score was Fairfield 1 Witham 6. Despite the defeat the team can take many positives from this game and from the season as a whole. Well played everyone. Mr Pitts.

3 Leicestershire League Cross Country After having the gods on our side with the weather for October and November s races, December s instalment was quite the opposite. A truly horrible day for all involved, with a strong biting wind and persistent rain, making conditions tough for all competing. I even found myself telling children to rush off home straight after their races! This did not seem to phase any Fairfield pupils who all turned up wrapped up and ready to go. Before proceedings, a lot of teams were in a contention for prizes. The pressure was on to try and run to the best of their ability, as every place mattered in the team event! The Year 3 and 4 girls both responded and came 3 rd overall in the standings excellent work girls! Next was the Year 4 boys- also delivering with 30 points in the race (Samer 1 st, Leo 8 th, Oliver 21 st ) and all 9 runners finishing inside the top 100, even though some did lose shoes on the way round! The Year 4 boys picked up 1 st prize for the team event incredible! The Year 5 and 6 were not in line for prizes, but as individuals ran extremely well! The next event is the Loughborough Town Schools Qualifier on 6 March. Top 10 will qualify for the County Championships (Year 3 and 4) and National championships (Year 5 and 6) at Prestwold on 23 March Thank you to all who braved the weather! Mr Rennie. Year 5 House Cross Country Well thank goodness the weather had improved! We were so relieved that the heavy rain and grey skies that seemed to linger all day yesterday had moved on and we were left with a dry, and fairly mild morning. Mrs Sutcliffe and Mr Rennie had made sure that everything was prepared for the children at the Grammar School playing fields as we made our way down for the competition. The Year 5 children have been working well in their lessons to prepare for the annual House Cross Country Competition and were certainly in good spirits as they warmed up. As we made our way to the start a few nerves did start to settle in but as soon as Mr Pitts started the race off the children sprinted towards the first corner. The runners go out of sight from the main Pavillion and it is always quite nerve wracking until you start to see the Hares and runners coming into sight again. This year that happened very quickly as the leaders came into view soon after we had arrived at the finish. The winner of the boys race came in with a record time of 8 minutes and 13 seconds, a super run by Jude. The girls winner wasn t too far behind with an impressive time of 8 minutes and 55 seconds, well done to Hyam. The children came in thick and fast thereafter and as soon as they had caught their breath they could all be heard cheering their peers over the line. The children should all be commended on their efforts throughout the term and in the competition, but also for the support that they showed for each other, encouraging each and every one of them round the course. A great big thank you to all of the marshals and supporters who came to the event, I have never witnessed so many, without you we couldn t have done it! Also thank you to the Year 5 staff, the Catering staff, Estates who set up the course and Mr Caldwell. A fabulous event to end the term with. Well done all! Mrs Webster.

4 This week, Dhyan s mummy was our surprise Mystery Guest. She came to talk to us about how her job helps to support people in the local community who may need some extra help at home. She told us all about the importance of being kind to each other and helping our friends or members of our family who are elderly. Thank you very much. Last Saturday, Polly (4B) was a mascot for Southampton Football Club for their Premier League game against Manchester United (who Polly supports!). The game was live on BT Sport. Polly had a great day and loved every minute of her experience, especially meeting all the players in the tunnel and the line up, she even managed to get a smile from Jose Mourinho! A reminder that we finish at 12:00 next Friday and that there will not be any After School Care on that day. Please note that the After School Care collection bell is unmanned between 16:00 16:30 due to the children being supervised for tea in the Eadon Hall. Should you wish to gain entry to the school during this time, please contact the Main School Reception who will arrange access. Please then make your way to the Eadon Hall to collect your child. Please can I also remind parents that as per the terms and conditions, there is a late pick-up charge of 15. Mrs Willingham.

We sold a total worth of books. This will enable us to buy lots of books for the Pre Prep and Upper Prep Libraries for the children to enjoy. For the last few years we have supported the Save the Children Charity by wearing a Christmas jumper on the last day of term, so we are hoping you can support us in this once again. All we ask is that on Friday 14 December the children wear their usual uniform with a festive jumper and bring in a 1 donation for this great cause. Many thanks for all the support you have given us during 2018 with our charity work and we look forward to more fund-raising in the New Year. The Charity Committee.
