Autumn Term Issue 534 Fairfield Prep School, Leicester Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire. LE11 2AE Friday 23 November 2018 From the Headmaster With the PTA s highly anticipated Christmas is Coming (Fairfield s Christmas Fayre) looming large, we are well on the way with our preparations for the onset of the festive season. The lights on our colossal Christmas tree outside the Eadon Hall have all been tested, ready for the youngest child in Reception to help me switch them on next Friday. The gates will be opened at 15:15 to enable you to come and join in the fun and sing a Christmas carol or two around the tree! You and your children are warmly invited to Christmas is Coming in the Eadon Hall from 17:00 onwards, where Santa and his helpers will be looking forward to hearing all about what they need to prepare for their big night in approximately one month s time. All proceeds will be put towards the refurbishment of the building next to the White House, affectionately known as The Barn, with a view to transforming it into an Upper Prep Art Room/multi-functional space. So start saving up all your loose change in readiness for the action packed event! To complement work in the curriculum, Year 4 have been involved in a range of enrichment activities. Here s a taste of our World War 1 experience, drumming session, trip to Leicester to take part in an Indian Day and our electricity workshop. From Monday, there will be more photos to view of the Year 4 page of Firefly.

Last Friday afternoon Reception enjoyed a visit from some mystery guests. Omar's mummy and daddy came in to school to surprise all the children and spoke about the importance of healthy eating. The children helped to make a food rainbow, using lots of colourful fruit and vegetable stickers and enjoyed listening to the story of 'Monsters don't eat broccoli'. Thank you very much to them both for giving up their time and passing on this important message. On Wednesday, Thomas' daddy surprised us all by being our 'Mystery Guest' of the day. He told us all about his exciting job, building jet engines for airplanes. We watched some videos to see how the engines are made and how powerful they are. It was so interesting and so much fun and I am sure that we will remember it when we fly away on our next holiday! Thank you very much to Thomas dad for giving up his valuable time to visit us. Year 5 had a lively and challenging day on Thursday when they celebrated Thanksgiving. Their cross-curricular topic has been North America this term and the celebrations were an ideal way to round off their work. Lots of effort went into costumes for the Wild West theme. The children made pumpkin pie in our cookery room with Mrs McGinty and Miss Jakubas. Many hadn t tasted it but were surprised at how delicious the small pies were. Mr Wilbraham led an art session where the children made Thanksgiving wreaths where they designed autumn leaves and a message relating to what they were thankful for. The highlight of the day was Line Dancing, led by Miss Helen of Charnwood School of Dance, assisted by Mrs Godwin. The children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and were soon able to master some quite tricky routines. Some children surprised themselves at how well they could dance and it was a delight to see their pleasure in performing in front of the Reception children at the end of the day. Please see photos below.

The Annual Loughborough Percussion Competition was held on Saturday 17 November and was a very successful one for current and former Fairfield pupils, as they won a clean sweep of all the categories. The winners were (left to right): William (U18), Henry (U11), Una (Most Promising Percussionist) and Sareena (U15). Two other Fairfield pupils, Anthony and Saif, also put in very impressive performances in the U11 category. Well done to all the performers. 5 Hockey v Foremarke On Saturday Foremarke hosted their final Hockey tournament of the season. A number of girls were participating for the school and also for their clubs. There were a large number of teams involved and we looked forward to a long afternoon of hockey. Our first match was against Spratton Hall, who we had played recently in a friendly. Despite a great deal of the possession and some good saves by their keeper, the match ended in a 0-0 draw. We quickly regrouped and prepared for our next match against Penine Way. We scored early on in this game and played some excellent attacking hockey, winning the game comfortably 4-0. We faced Bromsgrove next who were improving as the tournament progressed. Some excellent long range passing and movement made it hard for the Bromsgrove defence to mark us and we won the game comfortably by 2 goals. In the final match of the group Belper Hockey Club provided the opposition. The girls were determined to get a result and scored a super early goal. They built on the lead and finished 2-0 up at the final whistle. As we had topped the group we played the runners up from the other group which worked out to be Warwick Prep. Despite enjoying a great deal of possession the ball just wouldn t go past the goal line. Warwick defended very well and the final score was 0-0. This meant that we had to decide the game by penalty shuffles, the girls first experience of this! It was nail biting for us all and with the scores still equal after the first three shuffle takers, it went to sudden death. On this occasion Warwick were the victors and progressed to the Final. We had to pick ourselves up and play the hosts Foremarke in the 3 rd /4 th place play off. Again, we enjoyed lots of possession but Foremarke scored on a fast break. Despite a very close effort in the last minute, Foremarke held firm. The girls should be very proud of their performance, only conceding one goal in open play all day. They received many compliments from staff from other schools and most notably Foremarke s Headmaster. Well done girls it was lovely to see so many girls; playing some great hockey. Thank you to Mrs Sutcliffe for umpiring and all the parents for their fabulous support. Mrs Webster. IAPS National Hockey Finals As with their Regional Finals, the girls had another early start to ensure plenty of warm up time for the National Finals. Arriving at Rugby School as one of the Regional Winners, the girls, whilst a little nervous, felt confident of putting in a good performance. The competition consisted of twenty four teams from across the country drawn into four pools containing an even spread of winners, runners up and third place teams from the regional rounds. At this level, the girls were aware that every game would be hard fought and require some excellent team work and determination to progress in the competition. First up was King s College, Cambridge. The team played fantastically well and came away with a 2-0 victory; a brilliant start to the day. Next up was Hoe Bridge and again the girls played some super hockey to secure another win. The third match against Ashford Prep proved frustrating and, despite our possession, resulted in a win for the opposition. The girls heads did not drop and they went on to win their next two games against Framlingham and King s Hall. Securing second place in the table meant that we faced Ratcliffe College in the Quarter Finals. Having played them many times, the girls went into the match well aware of what to expect and despite consistent pressure and possession around the Ratcliffe goal, in both normal and extra time, the back of the net could not be found. Penalty strokes then ensued and heartbreakingly Ratcliffe came out as the winners, leaving Fairfield to play for 5 th /6 th place. Despite the deep disappointment the girls felt, the entire team rallied, lifted their heads and raised their game again to secure a well deserved 2-1 win over Cheam. This placed the girls joint 5 th in the country, an amazing achievement in a competition that saw 180 teams enter. The squad should, as I do, feel incredibly proud of their performance. They have played some scintillating hockey and I feel utterly privileged to have had the opportunity to coach such talented and determined girls; they have all been delightful and an absolute credit to themselves and their school. Many thanks to our wonderful band of parents who took the entire day to come and support, it was fantastic and such a boost for the team. Finally, a huge thank you to Ms Nicol for all her help, support and words of wisdom, they were very much appreciated. Results: Pool Results vs King s Cambridge 2-0 win vs Hoe Bridge 1-0 win vs Ashford Prep 1-0 lose vs Framlingham 1-0 win vs King s Hall 1-0 win Quarter Finals Vs Ratcliffe College 2-1 lose (penalty strokes) 5 th /6 th Play off vs Cheam 2-1 win Mrs Sutcliffe.

Hockey v LGJS This was our second tournament in 4 days and and provided the girls with a great opportunity to bounce back after the weekend. It was a very busy afternoon with our games in quick succession and only just enough time in between the matches to grab a drink. In the first match we faced Witham Hall, who have a great reputation in competitive sport. We knew that they would be tough opponents and adapted our formation accordingly. The possession was equally split between the two teams but a great ball and an instinctive strike from our attack meant that we took the lead. We held on until the last 2 minutes of the match when Witham scored after sending most of their players into our half. A very well fought match! Swiftly on again, we faced Stamford. The girls worked hard all over the pitch, applying pressure on the Stamford players when they were in possession of the ball. Again some super efforts in front of goal and some very unselfish play, gave us a two goal lead. A small mix up in front of our goal gave Stamford a glimmer of hope as they reduced the deficit to 1 goal. This made our girls more determined and they went on to score 2 more goals, winning 4-1. Spirits were high as we faced Copthill in our next match. A great reverse stick pass cut open their defence and we scored a fabulous goal to take the lead. The final score was 2-0. The next match was against Ratcliffe College; we played this at the same time as the U11 girls were playing them at the National Finals. Ratcliffe had beaten us already this season and we were determined to reverse the result. The girls were superb and tackled all over the pitch, chasing every ball. They took a lead 5 minutes into the match and kept the pressure on the Ratcliffe defence, working hard to try and score a second goal. Ratcliffe held firm and the final score was 1-0. Our final match was against the hosts LGJS. We knew we needed to win to be in with a chance of winning the tournament. An early goal settled the nerves but then a few injuries to our players meant that we were willing the final whistle. We were successful in the match winning 1-0. With anticipation, we waited for the presentation. As we expected, Witham Hall had also won all of their matches. The winning team came down to goals scored and unfortunately Witham had a higher goal difference, meaning that we finished as runners up. Although the girls were disappointed not to win overall they should be extremely proud of the way they played in all of the games. They produced the best hockey they have played all season with every player performing to their best. I am incredibly proud of the progress they have made this season, as they should be. Thank you to all the parents who supported us on such a chilly day and Mrs Love who was so impressed by the girls. Mrs Webster. Year 3 Girls House Hockey Competition Despite the rather chilly weather, the girls clearly enjoyed their House Hockey Competition. Everyone had the opportunity to play in three matches and it was wonderful to have so many parents take time out to come and give such encouraging support. The competition concluded this year s module on hockey and enabled the girls to demonstrate the skills they have been learning in both their PE and Games lessons. They were incredible supportive of each other and showed excellent sportsmanship throughout the afternoon. The competition was rounded off with some warming hot chocolate and delicious cookies. Well done girls! Mrs Sutcliffe, Mrs Webster, Mrs Lewis, Mrs Alves.

Rugby v Grace Dieu - Home On Wednesday 21 November the U11 A Rugby team played Grace Dieu at home. As is often the case, Fairfield started slowly as a result of being put under pressure in possession. Despite this Fairfield scored the first try when the space was identified. This gave the team confidence and the boys played the rest of the half with more control in contact situations and flair when running into space. The half time score was 3 1 to Fairfield. Grace Dieu continued to provide stiff opposition and deservedly scored two more tries of their own in the second half. However, they could not cope with Fairfield s attacking skills and ability to move the ball quickly away from the ruck. At one restart the ball was caught by Fairfield and carried purposefully forward. Quick ruck ball followed and three passes running onto the ball down the line resulted in them scoring a fabulous try in the corner. Certainly the team try of the season so far. The final score was Fairfield 6 Grace Dieu 3. A great result. Well played boys! Mr Pitts. Rugby v Grace Dieu - Away Our Year 3 A team played Tag Rugby in their long-awaited rearranged fixture away at Grace Dieu in cold, wet and therefore challenging conditions. The boys were buzzing, excited to show their supporters, and each other, the skills they d been honing all term. They did not disappoint. The boys worked hard as a team in defence, providing a stubborn defensive wall which frustrated Grace Dieu in attack. We turned over the play numerous times with our tagging skills and were always eager to chase after the loose ball. In attack, the lightning pace and desire of our players led to a number of excellent tries. As a first fixture, the boys conducted themselves very well both on and off the pitch and it is exciting to think about their potential for the future. We now need to work on our spatial discipline in defence and our teamwork and support play in attack, spreading the play and exploiting the space more quickly. A wonderful first performance boys; I m very proud of you! Mr Caldwell. On Thursday afternoon the U8 boys travelled to Grace Dieu for their first ever fixture! The bus journey was awash with excitement, even if one boy did say crikey, this is a long journey! 20 minutes down the road. The B team took the field and were instantly getting stuck in, making tags and scoring plenty of tries. On a cold day, the boys came up with a goal of always having their hands ready to catch, even if it was bitterly cold! They managed to achieve this and were making really good progress throughout the game. It was really nice to see the boys conducting themselves in the right manner and always showing good sportsmanship, and eventually running out winners on the day 9-5. The biggest cheer, however, came when they got into tea to find it was chips, pizza and beans! Well played boys; you should be proud of your performance. Mr Rennie.
