1 Autumn Term Issue 431 Fairfield Preparatory School, Leicester Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire. LE11 2AE. Tel: Friday 16 th October, 2015 From the Headmaster Some of you may have already noticed the Subject Heading has changed slightly to FOR in receiving this week s edition of our school newsletter. Every will be assigned a category from the following list: - FOR INFORMATION - RESPONSE REQUIRED - URGENT In addition to the above categories, each will have a tag or key phrase to allow parents to pick up the important elements of the communication at a glance, such as FOR I do hope that this will enable busy parents to prioritise s sent from Fairfield via Schoolcomms. I would also like to take this opportunity to inform parents of children in Years 3-6 (Upper Prep) that, from this point on, the school will not enter into any discussion, or reply to any communication regarding team selection. I have complete trust in my staff who regularly go above and beyond to provide many opportunities for our pupils to represent the school at the appropriate level, when there is a suitable opportunity to do so. I would kindly ask parents to respect the professional judgement of my staff to select the most appropriate team to represent Fairfield. Our Team Selection Policy can be found on the following page of our website: policies/ for your information. Whilst still on the theme of sport, I would like to invite parents of boys in Years 4, 5, and 6 to the Parental Information meetings regarding Rugby Safety on Monday 2 nd November (first Monday after Half Term) from 4.00pm 5.00pm in the Science Lab and Monday 9 th November from 4.00pm 5.00pm in the Dining Hall, both meetings led by Mr Wilbraham. And finally, as the first half of the autumn term draws to a close, I would like to thank you for your support in making the start of the academic year such a positive one. Yesterday s Harvest Festival showed the lengths you go to in supporting our school and your harvest donations will certainly be gratefully received by the following organisations the school has chosen to support: The Bridge Project, The Carpenter s Arms, Emmanuelle Church, Glebe House Project, and the Syston Friendship Group. Thank you and I hope you all have a relaxing and restful half term. This week, Year 2 have been to Beaumanor Hall to experience what it would be like to live in Victorian times. The day included a tour of the beautiful Beaumanor Hall both the grounds and inside to see how the rich would have lived. Then we went down to the cellars to learn what it would have been like to be a servant in the hall. Our final activity was in the Victorian School room where we had a very strict teacher!

2 SPORTS Football v Foremarke Tournament We were delighted by the performance of our Year 4 footballers at a highly competitive tournament on Saturday. Fairfield were drawn in a very tough group, but did really well. They were convincing 3-0 winners in the first game against Ratcliffe and in the second match against Terra Nova, the boys recovered from a first half score of 0-2, to win 3-2. Terra Nova were tournament winners last year, so this showed skill and determination of a high calibre. The last group match was against a very skilful Prestvelde team in which Fairfield lost 0-2. Despite this the boys were rightly pleased with their performance. Prestvelde went on to win the whole tournament at a canter. Fairfield were second in their group so went on to play in the Shield competition where they drew with Pennine Way in a thrilling match. The teams were still even after a sudden death play-off, so went on to contest a penalty shoot-out, which Pennine Way won. The final match followed on immediately and an exhausted Fairfield team were eventually beaten by OVS. It was a well organised event played in an excellent spirit. The boys were great ambassadors for the school and most importantly, had a terrific time. We were also grateful for the excellent support of our merry band of parents who kept everyone fed and encouraged throughout the afternoon. SPORTS Hockey v Foremarke Tournament On Saturday 10 th October, the team travelled to Foremarke School to compete in their annual tournament. Two pools of four teams saw Fairfield play three very competitive and skilful pool games. The girls played some super hockey and worked really hard to work as a team, moving forward as a unit and retreating back quickly when a tighter defence was required. The results of the pool games were as follows: vs Spratton Hall 1-0 win vs Foremarke 0-0 draw vs Beeston 0-0 draw These results placed us second in the pool and up against Bromsgrove in the Semi-Final. End to end action and some rather vigorous tackling saw the game end up being decided on penalty shuffles. Despite some good attempts, Bromsgrove won the shuffles 2-1. With heads a little heavy the girls went into the 3 rd /4 th place play off determined to secure medals. Again, an extremely competitive and balanced game ensued and after extra time the score was still 0-0. Another penalty shuffle was to decide the third place and with both our shufflers on top form and our goalkeeper filled with renewed confidence, the girls secured a very well earned 3-0 victory. The girls played extremely well and it should be highlighted that throughout the tournament they remained unbeaten in open play. A big thank you to Mrs Love and Ms Nicol for umpiring all the matches and to all the parents who gave their fantastic support throughout the day. Team: Abigail (VC), Lara (C), Chloe, Anna, Annabel, Roma, Catherine, Isabelle, Lizzie.

3 SPORTS Hockey v LGJS - Year 5 Girls Team Opposition Venue Date Result Arctic Herons LGJS Away 14/10/15 W: 3-0 Red Herons W: 5-0 Grey Herons W: 7-3 Blue Herons W: 8-1 On Wednesday afternoon, the Year 5 girls played 4 matches against LGJS. Fairfield showed great strength and depth across the board winning all four matches and scoring a total of 23 goals. This was an excellent opportunity for the players to gain valuable playing experience in competitive games. Well done to all of the teams involved and a big thank you to the Parents who braved the wind and rain to support. Scores above, teams were as follows: Arctic Herons: Molly, Chelsy (VC), Lilla, Zara, Diya A, Yagna, Olivia, Megan Diya P (C) Red Herons: Jessica, Priya, Georgia, Eleanor R, Freya A, Jemima (C), Mia, Izzy C (VC), Freya G. Grey Herons: Bella, Stephanie, Esha, Isabella B (VC), Anika (C), Eleanor M, Curie, Fangyi, Amelia R, Alisha-Fay Blue Herons: Grace (C), Emily, Rebecca, Alani, Jane, Millie (VC) Orla, Saha, Molly, Violet SPORTS Hockey v LGJS - Year 4 Girls Team Opposition Venue Date Result Tigers LGJS Away 15/10/15 D: 4-4 Chipmunks D: 2-2 Bears W: 2-0 Antelopes W: 6-1 On Thursday 15 th October, the Year 4 girls travelled to LGJS for their first year group hockey match. There was a tremendous amount of excitement both on and off the pitch not only from the players but also from our supporters. All of the teams put on an excellent performance and showed improvement in their hockey understanding and positioning. This was a great experience for all of the players and will stand them in good stead in future games. The teams were as follows: Tigers: Sophia K, Tess, Lilla, Diya, Gurina, Téa, Nia, Ishani (VC), Kiera (C) Chipmunks: Thea, Thalia, Sabreen, Jemima S (C), Shreya, Keesje, Saya P (VC), Harvi, Rafferty. Bears: Jessica (VC), Natalya, Asha (C), Kaavya, Charlotte, Anna, Sahitya, Matipa, Natasha, Zianna Antelopes: Isabelle, Georgia, Prisha, Sophia M, Erin (C), Jemima H, Antonia, Alice (VC) SPORTS Rugby v Oakham On Wednesday 14 th October, Fairfield U11 rugby team played away at Oakham. The team took a few minutes to get going but once they secured good possession, they soon dominated the contact area and open play situations. The score at half time was 5 tries to 0 to Fairfield. The boys continued to play fast flowing rugby and scored some great team tries although they did concede a try with the last play of the game. This made the final score Well played everyone but we must continue to work on our defensive line.

4 SPORTS Rugby v LGJS On Thursday the 15 th October, the U 9 A team played LGJS away. The boys played some superb rugby throughout the game, tackling and passing with increasing skill. They managed to come back from 15-5 down to earn a thoroughly respectful draw. Well played boys. On Thursday 15 th October, the U9 B team played LGJS away. The boys played extremely well and dominated throughout. Their tackling was awesome and their discipline was fantastic, listening carefully to what the referee had to say and following his instructions well. They were deserved winners, winning 11 tries to 3. Well played boys! On Thursday 15 th October, the U9 C rugby team played away at LGJS. The boys started slowly and were soon conceding tries. They showed great determination to fight back to be behind 4-3 at half time. Their performance continued to improve in the second half and the score at the final whistle was 7-7. Well played everyone but the boys must continue to practise their tackling skills. On Thursday 15 th October, the U9 D team played a fabulous game of rugby against LGJS. Fairfield were caught out by the quick pace of the opposition in the first half to trail 5-1. However, Fairfield organised themselves for the second half and the final score was Year 4 climbers signed off in style at the Climbing Station. Over the weeks, the children completed various assessments in safety around the facility, bouldering terminology and basic technique. Once they had done this, they had to complete 20 instructor-selected boulder climbs to gain their award - Level 1: New Boulderer. I am proud to say that 13 children achieved their Level 1. Congratulations! Thank you to the staff at the centre, parents for being so efficient at collecting their children and the Year 4 climbers who gave it their all! Mr Arnold and Mrs Alves Certificate winners: Frank, Alex, Edan, Nate, Rafferty, Noah, Daniel, Kaavya, Alice, Faris, Sophia, Charlotte and William. Today your child will be bringing home a leaflet about this year s Christmas Shoe Box Appeal. This year, the school have bought the shoeboxes which are available from the Shoe Box Appeal, hoping it will take out the work of finding a box and covering it and hopefully encourage more children to have a go at filling one! Boxes are available from your child s class teacher or the main office. We don t have a date for collection as yet but it is normally in the second week after the October holiday. Many thanks in anticipation of your continued support.
