Summer Term Issue 417 Fairfield Preparatory School, Leicester Road, Loughborough, Leicestershire. LE11 2AE. Tel: Friday 1 st May, 2015 From the Headmaster For those of you who follow my Twitter feed (@ffdheadmaster), you will already be aware of the success of our U11 Girls Hockey Team, who have been crowned as East Midlands Champions. Their success was celebrated today in our weekly Achievement Assembly and also in the Loughborough Echo. Monday saw further success with four teams from Fairfield Preparatory School travelling the relatively short journey to 3M in Loughborough for the judging of the Eco Tech Challenge. I am delighted to inform you that the 'Hedgehog Home' by Isabella Carmichael and Lucinda Rudman has been selected as a Finalist and the girls are invited to attend the Young Innovators Challenge presentation evening on Friday 22 nd May. The event takes place at The Hub, Loughborough College, Loughborough with Nicky Morgan, Education Secretary and Member of Parliament for Loughborough as guest of honour. And so with this wonderful news, along with the multitude of certificates I presented today, I have decided to give all the children a day off school on Monday as a reward for all of their efforts this week! I m sure that you will all enjoy the extended weekend and hopefully have the opportunity to write out your request forms for the forthcoming PTA Barn Dance & Hog Roast on Saturday 16 th May. Tickets are selling fast! This week some of our children from Years 4 and 5 visited the offices of 3M to present their entries for the Eco Challenge Young Innovator Competition. There have been many entries from schools in Loughborough and the surrounding area. The children spoke very well and presented some super habitats, power-points and posters. Well done to the following entrants - Violet O Neill, Orla Frankland, Molly Gardiner, Prisha Kadakia, Catherine Smith, Isabella Carmichael and Lucinda Rudman. And as you would have already read from above, our congratulations go to Isabella and Lucinda.
Girls U11 In2Hockey Midlands Finals On Friday 24 th April, the U11 A team travelled to Cannock Hockey Club to compete in the In2Hockey Midlands Finals. The finals included twelve teams, who were either runners-up or winners from their respective County Finals. The girls were determined to put in a strong performance and worked hard in their pool games to achieve the following results:- Warwick Prep L: 0-0 Bromsgrove W:2-0 Ranby House L: 0-2 St Joseph's W:5-0 Penine Way W:9-0 Despite the set back in the Ranby House match, the girls had played some fantastic hockey and were delighted to be through to the Semi-Finals where they played The Croft School, Warwickshire. The team rose to the occasion with an emphatic 4-0 victory. This put us into the final against Ranby House. Not to be deterred by our earlier pool result against them, the girls were determined to play even better and were first to score. Ranby fought hard and managed an equaliser which meant the game was decided on penalty strokes. The stroke takers and goalkeeper were completely focused on the task in hand and Fairfield secured a 3-1 victory to be crowned Midland's Champions. The entire team should be commended on their performance both on and off the pitch. A enormous thank you to Ms Nicol for umpiring and to all the parents for their tremendous support. Team Charlotte, Izzy, Elise, Immi, Keira, Manasi, Indie, Cerys, Anya Boys U11 In2Hockey Midlands Finals On Friday 24 th April Fairfield's U11 boys Hockey team represented Leicestershire in the In2hockey Midlands Championships. The pool results were as follows:- Chadsmead L: 1-2 Solihull L: 0-1 Worksop W:3-0 St Lawrence W:1-0 St Bedes D:0-0 The Elms W: 1-0 Chadsmead were able opponents in the first match, but a draw would have been a fair result as Fairfield created chances to score but were unable to take them. Solihull were by far the stronger team in the second match and had Lewis in goal not made 5 outstanding saves, the score would have been much greater. For the remaining matches, we concentrated on tightening our defence and to then play 4 more pool matches and not concede a goal was admirable. At the other end we attacked with greater purpose and created numerous chances. It was very pleasing to see some of these moves end with the ball in the goal. Despite our favourable results at the end of the pool stage, having lost our 2 opening matches,we did not qualify for the Semi- Final stage of the competition. The boys were a credit to themselves and to the school. Well done!
U10 A & B and U11 B Rounders v Foremarke On Wednesday 29 th April, 3 Rounders teams travelled to Foremarke for the first rounders fixtures of the season. All the teams performed well and improved greatly during the course of their respective games. The girls are determined to work on all skills during their practice sessions, particularly their batting, as it was in this area that Foremarke were the stronger. Well done to all the girls, the teams cooperation and conduct throughout the afternoon was superb and I look forward to seeing them improve as the season progresses. Many thanks to the parents who came to support and to Miss Greasley and Ms Gillard. The results were as follows:- U10 A L: 7½-17½ U10 B L: 12½-17½ U11 B L: 11½-14 U11 A Rounders v Solihull On Wednesday 29 th April, Fairfield played in the 1 st round of the I.A.P.S. girls Knock-Out Rounders Competition at Solihull. Fairfield did not start well and the side was all out for 10 rounders compared with the 18½ rounders Solihull scored. A remarkable transformation took place in the shortened 2 nd innings ( shortened to 27 good balls). The Fairfield performance went up several gears with everyone scoring and gained a 2 nd innings total of 17 rounders. Solihull were unable to match that fantastic performance scoring only 5 rounders.the final score was 23½ rounders to Solihull, 27 rounders to Fairfield, complete turn-around! Fairfield will now play in the second round! A commendable performance from everyone and a big thank you to Mrs Sutcliffe for all her support. a U10 A Cricket v OVS On Wednesday 29 th April, the U10 A Cricket team played OVS at home. We batted first and managed to score 121 in our 20 overs which was a very impressive score. There were some good contributions from a number of the batsmen. We then took to the field and managed to restrict OVS to 67 to record a resounding victory. The quality of the boys in all departments was outstanding and this bodes well for the coming season. Well played boys. U11 A Cricket v VCP The U11 Cricket team got their season underway with a tough opening fixture against Jersey's touring Victoria College Prep School this Wednesday. We won the toss and elected to bowl first. Our bowling was a little rusty, but we fielded well to limit the visitors to off their 35 overs. Despite a fabulous knock of 62 from Aryan Patel, ably assisted by Adam Carter (25), the total was just out of our reach as we fell 26 runs short. Congratulations to Aryan on his 5 th 1 st XI half-century, and plenty to work on in the nets next week.
When dismissed from any after school sporting activity, children must either be wearing their PE kit and tracksuit or be changed into their full school uniform, as instructed by the member of staff. We will not allow children to leave school wearing a combination of both. Our two elite choirs, Burton Choristers for boys and Chesterton Cantamus for girls, sing at several high profile events through the school year, both on campus and further afield. Over the past year, Choristers have sung at the LGS Carol Service, at Sheffield Cathedral and at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, while Cantamus have sung at LHS Tableaux and Worcester Cathedral. Both choirs also sing at two Burton evensongs each year as well as at the Singers and Choirs Concert. There is also an optional biennial tour for the choirs: this summer, they will be in residence at Truro Cathedral for a week in July. Entry to these choirs is by audition, usually in September each year. However, there is also an opportunity for boys in Years 3,4 & 5 to become choristers this term. Auditions will be held on Thursday 14 th and Friday 15 th May; boys who are keen singers are encouraged to sign up on the sheet next to Mr West s office in the LES Music School. Rehearsals for Choristers this term take place on Monday mornings ( ). The Pre Prep Children have been enjoying learning about the beautiful Muguet, or lily of the valley. In France people give a bunch of Muguet on May 1 st to wish each other happiness. It is also a very much enjoyed Bank Holiday! We also enjoyed a Muguet dance. Summer Holiday Course information has been sent to you via Parentmail this morning. Please return your booking forms and deposit to the School Office. Please note that the Holiday Courses this Summer will be held at the LGS Sports Pavillion and Playing Fields in Quorn. Additionally the opening time of the courses are now at the earlier time of 8:15am and the crèche has been extended to 5:45pm. Both at no additional cost.

Correspondence can also be left in the PTA box, located on the wall outside the library windows, by the medical room in the White House. Dates Any changes or amendments for Wrap Around Care should be given to Mrs Willingham by Tuesday 5 th May. Thank you. LAMDA Examinations Rupert Alexander lost his PE Kit at the end of term. Please could everyone check their cloakrooms at school and if found, return it to Rupert. Thank you. As the date of the examinations draws closer, I am witnessing some very pleasing recitals and can clearly see that some children are working hard and improving their work steadily week by week. However there are a number of children who clearly seem to be forgetting to practise and still do not know their words. There is much more to the exams than just knowing the words but clearly a candidate who cannot recite their pieces will not pass their exam. Please could I remind pupils that daily practice is important and only takes a couple of minutes. Thank you for your support. Karen Chapman Nearly New Shop Opening Times: Wednesday & Friday From 8.15am 9.30am Harry in Year 3, as the Speaker of the House, called order in the Upper Prep Thursday Assembly.
