Wn JItta. QDljrst Ijurclj ^djool ffagafnt [^nst (tub $)resnrt]. VOL. VII., No. 2. AUGUST, HEADMASTER'S FOREWORD. By the tme ths s n prnt everyone n the School, ncludng the Masters, wll be makng ther fnal preparatons for a wellearned holday. As I wrte there s stll nearly a fortnght to go and durng that tme wll take place the Examnatons, the Dancng Class Long Evenng, the Prefects' Dance and the End of Term Entertanment. The Prefects' Dance s an nnovaton and took place n the Parsh Hall. The Prefects were themselves responsble for all the arrangements, though the Supper arrangements were very kndly undertaken by a Commttee of Lades, for whose generous help.we are most grateful. Lookng back over the term that s past t s hard to recall anythng of outstandng mportance, except the fact that the mdweek half-holday on Wednesdays has seemed to make each week go very quckly and to gve more tme to everybody. I do not thnk less work has been done, but I certanly thnk all have been fresher and keener for the work that has been done, and I beleve thalt there are few n the School who would lke to go back to the old Tmetable.. In games I have notced a marked mprovement n the style of Football played and also greater keenness n the. playng. Ths has been the frst result of Mr. Truscott's very able coachng and the 1st XVIII have had on several occasons very bad luck n not havng the margn n ther favour nstead of aganst them. It s always nce to wn, and a sde must play to wn, but t s just as mportant to learn to play the game n the rght sprt and to be generous towards opponents even when dsapponted at not wnnng. The 1st XVIII has seemed to me to show that sprt. In some of the Under Age matches we have at tmes been qute outclassed through havng to fll the last few places n our teams wth boys much below the age of ther opponents. Ths wll, however, rght' tself as the numbers of the School Increase. We look forward to enterng a team for the Slazenger Cup at Tenns, but could wsh that ths Competton could be held a lttle later n the term, as there s lttle opportunty for serous practce before the frst Saturday of the term, when the competton begns. Owng to the dffculty of securng a ground on a Saturday the Athletc Sports

4 THE MITRE. aganst Wesley College wll probably have to be held on the last Wednesday of October on the W.A.C.A. Ground n Perth. We wll try and put our own Sports at least a fortnght before ths. At the begnnng of the term we welcomed to the staff, Mr. K. Van Raalte, to be Scence Master, and Mr. A. F. Blan to be Sports' Master. Mr. H. F. Gurney has taken a poston on the staff as Vstng Master for Bology, and Mss M. Saunders vsts to teach Drawng at the Unversty Examnaton standard. At the begnnng of the term, whle Mrs. Spratlng was away wth ^u njured foot, Mss J. Tombs kndly came and dd her work. I am sorry to say that the Matron, Mss Mulgrue, wll be leavng us at the end of ths term to take up agan her work as a nurse. She has been wth us for nearly three years, and has been most loyal and effcent n the dscharge of her dutes. She has been partcularly careful n all matters touchng the health of the House, and only once has sckness got a hold n the House,) and that was durng the earler part of ths year, when the mumps came. It was owng to her great care and self-sacrflcng attenton that all the cases were comparatvely mld. She gave up her May holday entrely to nursng the patents, and then had.the bad luck to get a couple of new cases when the boya returned for the 2nd term. I am sure everyone wll be sorry that she s gong to leave us. I am glad that the Scouts are carryng on keenly under Mr. Wheeler and the Leaders and that the Cubs noursh under the able control of R. McLarty, an old boy who gves up hs tme to ths regularly. The Old Boys' Assocaton has held two bg functons durng the term, namely, the Dance, and Dnner. Both were very enjoyable, though I wsh every old boy wthn reach would make t hs bounden duty to be present at these functons. The Commttee take very great pans to arrange these enjoyable chances of re-unon, and t should be a matter of honour for members of the Assocaton to support them loyally. Whle wrtng about old boys, I would lke, on behalf of the present boys, to congratulate R. Wrght on rowng n the Wnnng' 'Varsty crew n the Inter-'Varsty Boat Race, and also G. Connor on beng Vce-Captan of the Shootng Team n the recent Inter-'Varsty Competton. Anson Sewell, accordng to a recent letter, was on hs way to England to patent some wreless. nventons, so that t s obvous that hs nterest n ths has not dmnshed snce he left school. I hope that everyone wll enjoy the comng holdays, and that the Unversty Examnaton boys, especally, wll be prepared for some real hard work for the frst ten weeks of term. t * * A BRIEF EDITORIAL. The wnter term s a dull one, and the end of It for some of us a doleful one. We are begnnng to thnk for the frst tme that school sn't such a bad place, that masters aren't all entrely bad, that rules have ther advantages as well as ther drawbacks. To thnk that the end of the next term sees us off to work rresponsbles no longer! Then the reflecton "Wll we be mssed? Have we THE MITRE. 5 made good enough use of our chances for our absence to be notced?" We thnk wth relsh of our varous escapades. Now we thnk them over n cold blood, were we so very clever? Were they kept so secret, as we fondly magned? The School Is a mnature Republc. Have we been useful ctzens? Most of us have canddly to confess that we have been merely useless nusances. We at Chrst Church have yet to learn the prncples of self-government the secret of the greatness of the Publc School whether t be n school, n the playng feld, or n the boardng house. Here w,e have the foundaton of a fne school. In sport and 'scholastc achevements we have now attaned some standng. Sport partcularly s on the upgrade. We have good materal, showng consderable promse, n both sdes of school lfe. But there are evls whch must be eradcated, and eradcated by the boya themselves selfshness, meansprtedness, ndfference to the corporate lfe of the school. Once we can get rd of these evls, we may look confdently to the future. Well, you may ask, to what s all ths leadng up? The answer s, "Next Term." Let us all come back determned to put school frst, self second. Let us make next term a term for all to remember. Those who are takng the Publc Examnatons, let them determne to do well, f not for themselves, for the sake of the school. Those who are prefects, let them set an example to ther successors by runnng the school properly, for that s ther duty. Those who uphold the school's name n sports, let them strve each and all to be clean and unselfsh. In short, let each do hs partcular job and do t properly, so that when he leaves school he may have somethng to be proud of and may come back n later years wth no regrets to pay a vst to HIS school. Then may we say wth Matthew Arnold: Ah yes! Some of us strve Not wthout acton to de Frutless, but somethng to snatch From dull oblvon, nor all Glut the devourng grave! FOOTBALL NOTES. Ths term's football has not been a success from the pont of vew of matches won. But from other aspects t has been very refreshng. The 1st XVIII especally has shown very great mprovement under Mr. Trscott's coachng. Whereas n the begnnng of the season the feld contaned players manly wherever the ball was, n the latter part, our combnaton enabled us to defeat our opponents decdedly n one game, and untl the last fve mnutes n another, when, lack of wnd prevented our completng the vctory. The style of play has been on the lnes of long straght kckng, usng centre play whenever possble, and a polcy of "all n," whch combned have proved qute effectve. Had not Mr. Truscott been

6 THE MITRE. called away on, slall we say, a hgher duty, namely coachng East Fremantle, whle on ts Australan tour, we mght have experenced even stll nore satsfyng results. The under age teams, wth the excepton of the under 14, have not done qute as well as the lsts, n that ther general style las' not shown such marked mprovement. The under 14, however, show qute an dea of combnaton and enthusasm. SECTION MATCHES. Secton Matches, owng to a certan amount of unevenness, have not been productve of the keenness, of whch they should have been. Romsey, owng to a more powerful team, has so far, qute naturally been earnng the laurels, defeatng both House and Queenslea. Both of these houses, however, showed qute a dogged resstance at tmes, ; -.nd made qute good efforts to lessen the dfference n the score. House possesses the medum team, able to defeat Queenslea, but fallng before Romsey, and s held together -qute successfully by Arnold and Lews. However, the later matches may prove qute a reverse of fortune n favour of Queenslea and House. CRITIQUE. Mley: As captan, holds hs team well, although he has not been qute able to nspre them to success. As back, has qute a good knack of comng through wth the ball at the rght moment, and has done some very good work. Qute fast when n acton. Very far mark and good kck. Lovegrove: Vcs-captan. A small member whose man pont of dstncton s an occasonal brllant feat of kckng. Owng to sze, wsely lmts hs endeavours to low markng, In whch he s qute sure. Arnold: A very fast and sold player, possessng the rght sprt for football, vz., never gvng In to hs man. A good mark, but erratc kck. Lews: At tmes brllant, but always egotstcal and possessng a desre for the spectacular. Wthout these trats, whch tme may eradcate, would be qute a good footballer. Qute fast. Excellent mark and good kck, wth a much overdone trcky turn. Hassell: Erratc. Too fond of attackng the man after he has the bal n preference to gettng the ball before t reaches the man. Apart from ths gvng away a far number of kcks renders very sold servca. A good mark, but erratc kck. Jnnn: Has rendered nvaluable servce to the XVIII. Has fulflled hs place as goalkeeper n very fne style. Has the knack of comng through wth the ball and kckng. Very good mark and kck. Noseda: Although small a very fast player. Very neat n pckng up. Has the knack of kckng at the rght tme. Should prove a very great asset to the XVIII when bgger. Sure mark and kck.. Stanley: Our tallest member and one who never knows when he s beaten. Has a decdedly refreshng habt of comng through wth the ball (although nclned to hold t) n the approved Rugby fashon. Far mark, but weak kck. THE MITRE. 7 Douglas: A clumsy player. Decdedly poor mark and kck, who unfortunately defntely refuses to unburden hmself of the ball when he does get t, otherwse far. Boys: A good mark and sure kck. Shows sparks of occasonal brllance and a player who has shown very consstent form throughout the s season. Robertson : A player who has gven sold servce. Far mark and kck. Brown: Rather slow. Qute a far mark and kck. Lynn: Far mark and kck. When he learns to attack the scrums more wll be a much more useful player. Smth: Does very good work on occasons. If hd could be persuaded to take more nterest would be much more useful. Bedells: Far mark and good kck. Has played a very useful game n the back lne throughout the season. Dckson : Appears rather small on occasons. A far mark, but too slow n kckng. Bcklod: Rather small. Shnes more n under age matches. Far mark and kck. Bell: Slow and clumsy player who shnes on occasons. Hgham: Showed great promse at begnnng of the season. A player from whom we expect great thngs n the future. '). RESULTS OF MATCHES. June 2nd. 6 8 THE MITRE. ROWING. Practce has been carred on regularly, when weather condtons permtted, on Mondays and Thursdays throughout the term. The old par has been botched suffcently to enable her to be used for teachng begnners the elements of rowng and should last for another few years before she fnally dsentegrates completely. The sldng seats wth whch she was ftted have fnally and defntely refused to slde and have been replaced by fxed seats. At the end of last term the Romsey was overhauled and varnshed and the oars were recondtoned. Unfortunately we have only the one S3t of oars so that we cannot have both boats afloat at the same tme. We stll hope to have n tme another practce four and suffcent oars for our needs. Most of our oarsmen have only begun ths term, and the progress they have made has been very credtable. They have all mastered the rudmentary prncples of usng an oar though they lack polsh. None of them have yet learned to get the full value of the sldng seats nto Ither stroke though two or three are managng ther sldes farly well. We have made several trps to Pont Walter four, mles across the bay and back whch s no mean achevement for boys who have only just taken up rowng. Later recruts have, not yet had suffcent practce to> make such a long trp, but have reached Keane's Pont and returned before ther wrsts gave out. Comc relef has been provded by casual coxes. One asked what was perhaps the most asnne queston ever asked even by a Claremont resdent. Another attempted to get us through the gateway nto the boat-shed be r ore we needed to dsembark. The thrd less ;ambtous would have been content had he been allowed to carry out hs ntenton of runnng us aground on the Romsey sde of a pcket fence va the fence. Fortunately both attempts were frustrated n tme and the boat and ts crew are stll ntact. Wth the fne weather to be expected next term we should be - able to make more! extended trps, whch are essental for the acqurement of style and rhythm. If those who have been rowng ths term mantan ther enthusasm they should by the end of the year be able to consder themselves f not polshed oarsmen at least not tyros. PREFECTS' NOTES. We have at last Inaugurated our much hoped for Dance for the Wnter Term, and the date fxed s August 18th. By the tme these notes appear, the functon wll, we hope, have been voted a complete success. The proceeds are to be gven to the Old Boys' Gymnasum Fund. So we hope the Old Boys are gong to attend, and by assocatng wth the present boys, help to lnk us together n a bond of frendshp that wll last for many comng years. THE MITRE. 9 We are losng one of our number, we hear, ths term and we wll fnd hs place hard to fll. "Mck" has been at the school for a long tme and has done hs best n sport and school dutes throughout that term. We all jon n wshng hm all luck and success n hs after-school career. The weaker sex has attracted our attentons ths term, and besdes croonng over flm-stars, the whole crowd of' us are very vgorous n crtczng and dsplayng our knowledge about these creatures. BOARDERS' NOTES. The end of the term s near and we of the superor House are begnnng to thnk of the holdays; of how soon we can get home; and of how long t wll take us to get back next term. But frst we must wade through the exams. the last dregs of the cup of ths term's school work. Last md-tjerm some msguded members of our fraternty were persuaded by "One Who Should Know Better," to ndulge n a gentle "Hke to Somewhere and Back"^they got nearly back. We wth more sense have been afflcted ever snce wth a group of nsufferables who have adopted the pose of martyrs, and dsplay ther blsters on the slghtest provocaton. There s one he wth the canne cognomen who has been observed holdng conversaton (and some) wth members of the opposte sex, durng football, durng school, and even n hs lesure hours. Mchael has become a dscple of the slogan "Red Heads Preferred." He wll some day realse that blondes are the only possble. We must congratulate Rastus on beng gven hs game n the XVIII also Harry Hg'am. Durng the term some person, or persons, unknown commtted the sn of ntroducng the boarders to the stamp habt. At nght the small fry take ther albums to bed and barterng can be heard n ther dormtory at all hours. Stamps have replaced bcycle parts as symbols of exchange. Bkes are a bad second n the order of thngs. In a word we have degenerated (t s hoped only temporarly) to the level of stamp collectors. Ths term those n Power conceved the brllant dea of tryng to teach the junors how to mastcate ther comestbles, and the scheme has been farly successful. Bother s no longer seen strrng hs tea wth hs knfe; Kag no longer llustrates the correct broadsdng poston whle consumng fred frtters, and Sandy II can now suppress artculaton whle munchng potted marmte. We have heard that we Must bd farewell to Mchael ths term, and we all hope that he wll have every success at Katannng, and that he wll uphold our tradtons by not gettng marred.

10 THE MITRE. It s sad that one of us ha3 fallen for a country wench s noone mmune? Bucky s now a man of fashon hs new sut has a jgger button! Dcky got a new bke n the mddle of the broadsdng craze Dcky learned to broadsde -Dcky fell off many tmes and the enamel suffered Dcky saved hs church collecton and the new colour s a dark chocolate^ Ough! We are all lookng forward to the comng holdays, and we wsh each other the best of tmes, and hope that we wll come back wth more good resolutons than ever next term. "SIRRAH." ROMSEY NOTES. We are ndeed fortunate n havng such a good all-round team, and t s to be hoped that one of the other sectons wll arse and challenge ts superorty. We owe our success to several outstandng players and are very grateful to them for ther wholehearted determnaton to wn. We were all very sorry to hear of McGlew's nablty to play, and felt hs loss on the football feld. In concluson, we heartly wsh the other sectons good luck, and congratulate them on ther stubborn resstance. * * «QUEENSLEA NOTES. THE MITRE. 11 charabanc. The rest of the campers bravely rode up n the travellng Zephyr, whch arrved there safely after many narrow escapes. On more than one occason the char. attempted to capsze, and had an effect on Osse's mnd, and caused hm to recte hs junor poem the "Ocean." We had tea n the dark, and afterwards several lads deposted ther weary bodes on beds of green folage. Ken Sudlow and Bll came over from ther farm, and cheered us up wth, the news that n the early mornng we would awake and see one another n the forms of cebergs. Ken sad the only way he could get warm was to sleep n the ncubator shed wth sx mattresses on top of. hm. We owe a deep grattude to Mr. Sanderson for hs kndness n placng hs verandah at our dsposal, and provdng mattresses and carpets to sleep on. Wthout hs help we would have fared badly. Several excursons were made to the falls where games were played. On Saturday nght all assembled around a camp fre and entertaned one another wth yarns and jokes. On Sunday afternoon several scouts passed cookng and frelghtng tests. At 3 p.m. George and Reg. set out for home on ther bkes, and two hours later the rest of us departed on our old rollckng frend, the char. On the whole the camp was a great success, everyone enjoyed hmself mmensely. Queenslea has been at a dsadvantage ths term through a shortage of good players, and t s to be hoped that we wll not have ths excuse n the future. Nevertheless we have succeeded n beatng House n the Crcket Season and have gven them a good "run" for the Football Season. We congratulate Romsey on ther success whch we must attrbute partly to superor numbers. * s * SCOUT NOTES. The Scout Troop has kept up ts numbers durng the past term, and everyone s settlng down to a new enthusastc sprt, thanks to our generous Scout Master, Mr. Wheeler. We decded to go for a camp at Kalamunda, Mr. Sanderson havng kndly lent us a shed to sleep, n. On the Frday afternoon one energetc lad rode up to Kalamunda on hs "gallopng bedstead," but despte ts name he arrved there ten mnutes before the TERPSICHORIA. By "Nosey." Farly rapd progress has been made ths term n. the dancng class, the new-comers especally proftng by Mss Scott's tuton. The chef problem ths term has been the "Yale Blues." "Robbo" was fearfully muddled at the start, but has now mastered the art. He s undoubtedly the most assduous member of the class. "Chas." usually has a "good dea about each step," and s thus able to commandeer the turps we mean the dances wth Mss Scott. A vst by some of the members to a Y.A.L. (wthout the E) dance durng the term has evdently affected them, for "Monty" and "Amy" are now the centre of attenton for ther "tonks" dance. Ths strongly resembles the antcs of two snakes tryng to swallow each other. Next term we hope to unravel the ntrcaces of the "Doll Dance" and close wth ths dreadful thought for the "fry" who fnd t rather hard to keep up wth the "Clve Kergers" of the frst row.

12 THE MITRE. QMft log*' EDITORIAL. fous. Once agan the months have slpped past and I fnd myself n the unfortunate poston of havng to comple, wth no news whatsoever, our secton of the school magazne, whch, \v.th our ncreased crculaton, s one-thrd porton. To fll ths should not be beyond us, and t would greatly assst me to do so f our lterary gen would supply me wth some nterestng artcles whch would be greatly apprecated by all. However, as none are forthcomng on ths occason, my unworthy pen must attempt to do justce to all my readers. As far as' the Assocaton s concerned, we have not yet reached last year's fgures wth our membershp, although we have welcomed nto the fold several who have been away from us for a long tme. Wth an ounce of luck we hope to be able to deprve the few remanng delnquents of ther outstandng subscrptons n the course of the next few weeks. I would lke to make a specal appeal to all Old Boys to endeavour to make any erstwhle members of the Old School jon up and take a hand n our functons. There s a great number of our old frends who have drfted away and take no nterest whatsoever, and for ths reason alone t should be the duty of everyone of us to endeavour to nduce them to jon up and take a fresh nterest n the School and the Assocaton. PAST ASSOCIATION FUNCTIONS. The Annual Dance was a great success socally ths year although a slght fnancal loss was ncurred. It was held n the Y.A.L. Hall on June 28th, and all who attended passed a very enjoyable evenng The Football Match v. The School was held on Monday, June 25th, at the school oval. There was a good attendance of Old Boys, and a very close game resulted n a wn for us despte the fact that Harold Boys.turned round and played for the school n the closng stages of the game. Our team was made up of Brown, Boys, Armstrong, May, Lynn, Stlwell (2), Evans (2), Sudlow (2), Flntoff, Maclagan, Uttng, Gbson and Martn, and the scores were: O.B.A., 11 :goals 10 behnds 76 ponts. School, 10 goals 12 behnds 72 ponts. THE MITRE. 13 The Annual Dnner was held at the Savoy Hotel on August 4th. The attendance was very poor, as some 2 8 Old Boys were all that could show any apprecaton of the Commttee's efforts. We have had many complants n the past n reference to the Dnner, and now that t s placed on the same footng as that of other assocatons, we are no better off. A very enjoyable evenng was spent by all who attended, and t was a very merry band that wended ts way home somewhere n the regon of mdnght. Those present were; Rev. L. W. Parry, Messrs. Beere and Brown of our "Vce-presdents, and Battye, Flntoff, Maclagan, Gles, Armstrong, Gloster, Whtlock and Evans of the Commttee, and L. and H. Harrson, C. and W. May, Lng, Lynn, Bowers, Mller, Fulton, Cramond, Duncan, Stuart, Pror, Bowers, Connor, Todd, Bosworth, Hamlton, Gles and Eaton of the" Assocaton. Messrs. Prce and Adamson were unavodably absent. Come on now, where were the rest of you? * *» HOCKEY NOTES. As we have Flntoff, Duncan, Maclagan, Gles, Lynn, Brookng, Tng, Evans and Manford among the welders of the crooked stck, t has been suggested that we form a hockey team for next season. Several other old boys around town have already expressed ther ntenton of gvng ther servces, aud everythng ponts to the successful accomplshment of the scheme. Ths should be deservng of your best efforts and full partculars wll be avalable at a later date. In the meantme, anyone nterested s requested to communcate wth the secretary. REMINISCENCES. (The Old Famlar Faces). I often thnk, when quetly musng by the fresde, of the numerous ncdents of my schooldays whch at the tme had very panful endngs, but now appear n a dstnctly humorous ven. Well do I remember promptng a stumblng pupl In one of the Headmaster's mathematcs classes, and later payng the extreme penalty n hs study. Such was my reward for tellng the truth when questoned by the Head as to the exact dentty of the prompter. On another occason, when the detenton class played an mportant part n the daly routne, 1 had the pleasure of spendng a few quet hours under ts strct regme. Unfortunately, as I was enterng the room, there, before my very gaze, was a fgure, just vsble beyond the door, pckng up a fallen book. Now I appeal to all footballers for a vndcaton of my acton. Naturally, as was

14 THE MITRE. only human, I kcked the fgure good and hearty, beng duly chased round and round the classroom by the njured nnocent for my trouble. All ths tme tha master n charge was workng hmself nto a very angry mood, and havng restored order, showed hs dspleasure by enterng us n the book for further detenton on the morrow. Why he should have been so angry I have never yet been able to fathom, because he was not the recpent of the kck. However, the worst was yet to come. Next day, at Evenng Call-over, the eagle eye of the Head chanced to alght on our.names as havng been "foolng n detenton.' 1 and he, very kndly, ssued a curt nvtaton to pay hm a vst n hs study for hs convenence preferably at 4 p.m. Ths seemed to ft n wth our arrangements, so 4 p.m. saw us at hs study, and we entered at hs bddng wth a decded snkng feelng. The Head had not fnshed hs afternoon tea, so he entertaned us wth a bref dscourse on our respectve demerts. Then afternoon tea over the sesson was brought to a close by a very nterestng exhbton of carpet beatng by the Head. Awfully decent of hm I thought. I do not wsh to bore you further, but before closng, I must remnd some of you of the occason when "Codde" Day went n to receve a whackng after havng frst taken the wse precauton to pad hs trousers wth a bath towel, A very wse, move, but unfortunately, a foot or so dd! not ft n and was showng under the bottom of hs coat. The Head, however, had a keen sense of humour, and allowed t to reman here.»t * NEWS FROM NEAR AND FAR. The Secretary reports the recept of a letter from our old Headmaster and frend, Mr. S. C. Noake. He s n very good health and very grateful to the old boys for ther contnued remembrance of hm. He hopes to show ths n a more tangble form some day. Hs address s: Kng's School, Parramatta, N.S.W. A very old boy n the person of Keth Whtlock has at last shown hmself up n town and renewed old acquantances at the annual dnner. Ted Lng has just returned from a trp to the East, and reports a very successful tme, as he. had, wthout hs usual perfunctory adulaton, dsposed of the A.M.P. durng hs bref sojourn. Engagements are very fashonable just at present, as Sknny Gles, Max Brown and Jeff Cox have all successfully "popped the queston. The usual letter of sympathy has been sent wth a pamphlet enttled "How to be happy, though marred." Max Bosworth was n town agan and found tme to chew a chop wth the rest of us at the dnner. Geoff Rooney was present at the Football Match. you, Geoff. How are the over-drafts at Kuln? Glad to see THE MITRE. 15 Rupert Kendall has returned from the Eastern States and s now qute recovered. Nel Edwards found tme to leave hs farm and attend the annual dance. Dck Lovegrove s stll makng hs name on the football feld, whle hs brother Tom s expected home for a bref holday. Most of troubles, fortunately, seem to be lttle ones. Just lsten to ths "Gnner" Pesse s the proud father of a baby grl and Pat Montgomery has a sou. Keth Calthrop s at present n England enjoyng a holday. We have many devoted followers of rowng n our mdst. Rupert Wrght, Geoff Connor and Charle Coln were all promnent at the recent Unversty Regatta. Whle together wth Dck Gles and Weller May they have been rowng n varous regattas for ther respectve clubs. Walle Lodge, Rayer Cramond and Geoff Hll have all become promnent n the golfng world. Rumour hath t that Dck Gles recently fnshed 17 down on bogey and has now taken up ludo. Anson Sewell s on hs way to England for a holday. In a recent letter he advses that he s makng money by constructng wreless sets. Ths should prove very nterestng to any who remember hs efforts at school. Our old frend Tony Montgomery came to town recently to wsh hs mother and sster "Bon Voyage" on ther way to England. Another old dentty n the shape of Hector Fuller has wrtten n and wshes to be remembered to hs old frends. Erc Gomme, who s n dstant Kalgoorle, sent hs best wshes to the Assocaton. T. Mur, of Borden, has joned after a long absence. Hearty welcome from all, Boof, old scout. ODDS AND ENDS. When s a square yard not a square yard? tenns court. Durng all ths upheaval, Chlle was tryng to shoot a. magpe, the arrow, on httng a branch of a tree, was deflected from ts natural course, and eventually ht Stan on the nose. The latter mmedately collapsed n a heap on top of Onkus and Oss. These three unfortunate ndvduals were collected n a heap around Gustavus's stlts, and the latter was unable to descend from hs lofty throne for three hours; that s why Gustavus won hs champonshp. Durng hs lofty suspenson, a crcket ball, whch, was accdentally ht from the neghbourng playng feld, ht Gustavus n the eye, and would have blnded hm had t not been for hs glasses. After these occurrences everyone fledvn terror and went home to bed. Before work the next mornng I took a walk round the town, and when I arrved at the markets, I saw Oss and Guss, each n a par of stocks of my own makng. They had been found unconscous on the playng feld, and the magstrate of the town declared emphatcally that the cause of such an accdent was drnk; and these two unfortunate ndvduals were promptly fxed securely n the stocks, and were oblged to reman there for two days. Oss had a dead cat kndly and thoughtfully restng upon hs shoulder. Some other knd person had artfully thrown a bad egg at Gustavus. The egg tself had landed on hs nose, and remaned there, whle the contents slowly trckled down hs cheeks. I felt extremely sorry for these two unfortunate lads, and forthwth washed them down wth the emergency fre hose, whch was always kept near the stocks, for the purpose of clearng up the mess whch was always found about these nstruments of punshment ENGLISH ESSAY. On "Imagnary lfe of a Member of a Guld." I was apprentced to a carpenter at the age of ten, and I remaned n that tedous and unpleasant poston for seven years, at the end of whch perod I became a craftsman, and could buld a par of stocks as well as anybody else n the country. I joned a very socable and sensble club called the Craft Guld, and later on became a member of a superor club called the Merchant Guld. At each meetng connected wth these two Gulds, we play such thrllng and dangerous games as knockng stones down, throwng a bowl at nne pns, scourng a top wth a whp, shootng wth a bow, walkng on stlts, and playng crcket, the least dangerous game of the lot because the ball s seldom ht, and n therefore rarely caught. I remember, at one annual festval, we all joned n these games, and many exctng thngs happened. Gustavus was the champon stlt-walker, and Oss was the superor at knockng down nne pns. Durng the contest, Smth, our vllage blacksmth, was scourng a top, and, mstakng Osse's head for a top, struck wth all hs mght. The next thng that happened was that one of the ropes on the swng (upon whch Onkus was amusng hmself) broke, and our famous swngster was propelled thrty feet nto the ar. Wlren he landed, he promptly knocked Osse's nne pns down; that THEY SAY That Speedy s representng C.C.S. on the Y.A.L. tour. That Glewy got a lttle bear. That Monty DOFFed hs hat.
