1 PO Box 865 Bowral NSW 2576 Ph: Fax: Web: Term 2 Week 3-16 May 2018 A few years ago I made a mural (a hot air balloon) which is placed on the brick wall immediately outside the classroom of 1 Amber. Some of the plastic bottle tops have fallen off. We need your help in sending in bottle tops to fill in some of the gaps. The colours needed are: Light blue (all shades), light green, dark green, white, pink, red, brown and yellow. Please drop off bottle tops to the school office so that we can repair the mural and restore it to its former glory. Thank you for your help! More often, parents are telephoning the school to ask that a message be passed on to a student regarding change of routine. While we will always do our best to pass on messages in due course it is sometimes impossible to guarantee that a student will get a message if changes occur after 2pm. Our busy office staff are helpful and obliging but sometimes simply cannot get to a classroom with a late message. In the case of emergency, we will, of course always ensure that messages are passed on. Please read the important information about communication at school further on in this newsletter. Student reports will be sent home at the end of this term. The reports will indicate days absent, both whole and partial. If a student has missed more than 10 days in a semester (2 school weeks) then it is noteworthy. Any school day that is missed is a day of learning lost. There is so much that cannot be caught up by simply completing worksheets. Equally important is students arriving to school on time. Students who arrive late inevitably miss out on the important morning routine which sets up the day ahead. If your child is sick and cannot attend school, please notify the school as soon as possible. All student absences MUST be explained, by law within 7 days of the absence. From time to time we understand and acknowledge that some families have difficulties paying for school related costs such as excursions, school visits, uniforms and other school related expenses. There is financial support available to help those families. Should you ever find yourself in this position, please do not hesitate to speak to me at school to see how we can help. Wendy Buckley PRINCIPAL BEEHIVE CANTEEN There are several families who owe the canteen money for lunches provided when children had no food at school. Notes have been sent home with payment requested, but unfortunately there is still quite a lot of money owed to the canteen. If you have received a pink canteen note, can you please send the money to school as soon as possible? Thank you REMINDER DIARY DATES Monday 21 May P&C meeting 6.30pm in the library Thursday 24 May School Photographs
2 DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY Congratulations to the 42 students who represented Bowral Public School at the Wingecarribee District Cross Country Carnival held at Hampden Park, Robertson on Thursday 3 May. We were very fortunate with the weather, which allowed our runners superb conditions for racing. Thank you to the parents and grandparents who assisted on the day with transport and provided an excellent cheer squad. The majority of our team finished in the top half of the field of 45 in each race, which was quite an achievement, especially as there were many personal bests on the day. Of particular note were the outstanding achievements of Rohan, Ava, Jamie and Oliver who easily won their events and Fred, Ashleigh and Amalie who placed, second, fourth and third respectively. These students will progress to represent the school and district at the Regional Carnival in June. Our school placed second at the carnival to Mittagong Public School, by just a few points. Michelle Jacobs PSSA BOYS SOCCER KNOCKOUT COMPETITION, 2018 On Wednesday 2 May, the Bowral PSSA Boys Soccer team played Moss Vale in Round 1 of the PSSA Knockout Competition. Despite a loss 7-1, the boys played well and displayed excellent sportsmanship. They were a delight and pleasure to manage. I was very proud of their skill level and attitude during the game. Well Done! They were very lucky to be coached by Tim Mattick and were always keen to listen and learn. Thank you to Tim from the team for your time and commitment. A big thank you must also go to the parents who transported the boys to the game, supported and cheered the boys on. Mrs Baguley On game day we played really well as a team and we had lots of chances. Unfortunately, Moss Vale beat us, but it was still a great game. Leo On Wednesday 2 May, the Bowral Public School boys soccer team went down to Moss Vale when we played our very first game of the season. They proved their worth by beating us, although we did score one goal from a penalty kick. There were many good chances when we strung together lots of good passes and took some shots at goal but Moss Vale just wouldn t let us through. When the final whistle blew and they were victorious, we still stood tall, walking off the field knowing we d done our best. We all had a great day and we would like to thank Mrs Baguley and Tim Mattick for making that day possible. James On Wednesday 2 May, the Bowral Public School boys soccer team travelled to Moss Vale to play Moss Vale Public School. The boys played amazingly in goalkeeping, defending the midfield and in the attack. Each and every player played to their full potential to create a close match, and although we didn t come out with a winning result, everyone kept their heads high and showed an excellent example of good sportsmanship. We all had a great day of playing soccer and thank you to all of the boys and our coach for making this day possible. Oscar On Wednesday 2 May, the boys soccer team took Moss Vale head on. Although I couldn t play, I still showed up and felt like I was. The game was enjoyable to watch and the lads played well. Although we didn t win, we still put up a good fight. Moss Vale is a good team and we got one goal on them. We showed great sportsmanship and were very energetic on the field. We held our heads high and played a great game. Oliver On Wednesday 2 May, the Bowral Public School boys soccer team went down to Moss Vale to play the first game of the season. They showed they were a good team and we only scored one goal from a penalty. We did have some really good chances but we just could not get them in. When the final whistle blew they were victorious, but we knew that we still played well. The boys didn t make it to the next stage but they still tried their hardest. We thank Mrs Baguley for managing the team and Tim Mattick for his fabulous training. Rohan STEWART HOUSE DONATION DRIVE Dear Parents and Caregivers, Friday 18 May is the last day to return Stewart House envelopes. Stewart House provides care and respite for children who are struggling for a variety of reasons. Every year Stewart House helps around 1800 children. Please return your envelope by Friday 18 May to be in the running for the chance to win a $4000 holiday of your choice and help support the work of this dedicated charity. 3 STAGE 3 PSSA TRIALS Hockey trials Six of our students, Amalie, Abbey, Claire, Maya, Joshua and Rylee were selected in the Wingecarribee District Hockey Team. They travelled to Goulburn for the Tablelands Zone Hockey trials and Amalie and Claire were successful in being selected in the Zone Team. The girls will now go onto the South Coast Hockey trials in Liverpool which will be held over 3 days in late June. Congratulations to all of our aspiring hockey players on their fantastic efforts and we wish the girls the best of luck for the next stage! Rugby League trials Daniel, Gabriel, Tobias, Brayden and Angus were selected to represent the Wingecarribee District at the Zone Rugby League trials last term. The boys played some great rugby league alongside players from the other district public schools, showing great sportsmanship and representing our school with pride. Well done boys. Congratulations to Brayden and Angus who were selected in the Tablelands Zone Team. They represented the zone at the Regional trials last week at Batemans Bay aiming for selection to represent the South Coast. Unfortunately they were unsuccessful in making it into the South Coast Team, but it is a great experience for them and we look forward to seeing how they go next year. Well done boys! Rugby Union trials We had a number of students at the Zone Rugby Union trials last term, a number backing up from the League trial earlier in the day. Jamie was successful in gaining selection in the Tablelands Zone Rugby Union team. He will represent the zone at the South Coast Regional trials in Week 3 in Goulburn. We congratulate him on his success and wish him the best at the next level. Mr Matthews NETBALL NEWS Two Bowral Public School netball teams have been busy playing netball successfully over the last two weeks. Bowral Whites and Bowral Blues participated in the Schools Cup held on 7 May at Eridge Park. There were 5 teams in total and we played a round robin competition. Bowral Whites played well against Cedar Blues and Colo Vale, winning both games. Grace who is a normally a defense player surprised us with her excellent shooting skills during our third game. After lunch we played against Bowral Blues. We lost this game, however it was fun playing against our friends. Andie shot an amazing goal from the edge of the circle! We were so proud of all our players as we worked together to make a great team. Our red faces reminded us of Oompaloompas!! Overall, it was a really good day. We encourage you take the opportunity to play netball. It is a fun sport to play. By Eden and Ruby Bowral Blues have rocketed to the Regional Final of the Schools Cup competition after winning every game convincingly on 7 May at Eridge Park. We scored many goals, stole many centres, worked as a team and had a lot of fun. The Regional final will be held in Goulburn in August. A big thank you to Mrs Faulkner, Kate Bow and Helen Taufel. By Lulu and Amelia Zone Netball Trials On 9 May in Yass, nine girls represented the Wingecarribee District after being selected from a pool of 35 girls from Years 5 and 6. The girls from Bowral PS, Colo Vale PS, Bundanoon PS, Moss Vale PS travelled to Yass to play and attempt to gain a place in the Regional Team. After a day of playing netball in glorious Autumn conditions, five Bowral girls were selected to make up a team of ten players to play in the Regional Trials in Berkeley on the 21 May. We wish Lulu, Annabelle, Sophie, Sophia and Oki the very best of luck as they endeavour to gain a place in the South Coast Team. What a fantastic effort by all girls involved. A special thank you to Kate Bow and Helen Taufel and all the parents who came to support their children. Kim Faulkner
4 COMMUNICATION AT BOWRAL PUBLIC SCHOOL Communication at our school is always going to be a challenge as there are so many parents who have varying expectations of how we should inform them of goings on at school. When we surveyed parents last year we asked the question: What forms of communication do you use to stay in touch with what is happening at school? 75% of parents indicated that they asked their children.while this is terrific for some things, children are not always reliable messengers and miscommunication can occur. Please read the information below carefully so that you have a clear understanding of which forms of communication are being used at Bowral Public School. Our Newsletter remains our primary form of communication. It is published fortnightly, however it is probably worth reading weekly so that you can refresh yourself as to what is happening in that fortnight. The newsletter is available on the school website and is sent to all parents via Skoolbag. Skoolbag is a fantastic tool.you can inform the school if your child is absent and if you check it regularly, you will receive alerts from school regarding important information or changes to routine. Our school website contains information about many aspects of school life. Each class has a class page and teachers are asked to update this page regularly. Stage/grade notes are also available on the school website. Our school newsletter is also accessed via the Home page of the school website. We endeavour to keep the calendar up to date as well. Notes are sent home from time to time on a needs basis. Teachers are asked to ensure that children write their name (or initials) on all notes that go home, so that notes found under desks, on the floor, in the corridor or in the playground can be returned to their owner! Parents need to check schoolbags each night (Kindergarten and Year 1 students have notes placed in Reading Folders). Copies of all notes that are sent home are also placed on the School website (under the Notes to Parents tab). Our school Facebook page has lots of photos, parenting hints and complements other forms of communication We all lead busy lives and we ask that you help us and your children by using our preferred methods of communication. News from the Beehive Thank you to the lovely volunteers who have responded to our plea for help and saved us from having to go to RED these first few weeks back. At the moment we need more volunteers to HELP US STOP THE FOLLOWING DAYS FROM BEING RED: Tuesday 29/5, Wednesday 30/5, Tuesday 5/6, Tuesday 12/6, Wednesday 13/6 (Amber), Thursday 21/6 (Amber), Friday 22/6, Tuesday 26/6, Wednesday 27/6 (Amber) Friday 29/6 (Amber), Tuesday 3/7 and last day of school Friday 6/7. The new split shifts 9.15am am and 11.30am-2.30pm, mean you can choose to volunteer just a few hours of your time It does and will make all the difference!! (You can still do the whole day if you like ) We have been looking at some sustainable options for the Beehive for our cutlery and containers and very happy to announce the new CUTLERY CRATES! Now we have our new commercial dishwasher in place and up and running, we can do a wash in a pretty impressive 2 minutes so it makes sense to move to proper cutlery (well spoons, teaspoons and dinner spoons). We would love any donations of either of those spoons that you no longer need. Please drop into the canteen once we have enough we will set up cutlery stations at key points in the playground for the return of cutlery to be washed and re-used. We would also encourage you to send your child with their own cutlery for either packed or lunch orders. Our goal is by the end of term we are fully sustainable with our packaging and cutlery no plastic straws either!!! Even though STOCK THE PANTRY days are our specific days to bring in donated goods for our Beehive pantry, we welcome donations at any time (tinned Milo, corn kernels etc) and at the moment we really need tinned apple (sliced or diced not pureed) so that we can keep making our delicious crumble.. please bring any donations to the canteen. THANK YOU!! If any parent has experience with MYOB and would be willing to help us understand it better (the reporting specifically, but also a general overview) please contact us on beehivecanteen@gmail.com We love your feedback or if you have any questions please contact us on: beehivecanteen@gmail.com We really hope to see you in the Beehive soon. The Canteen Committee
5 Vacant Committee Positions Thank you to Ange Troy for coming forward and offering to fill the position of treasurer for our P&C, we are very grateful to her for kindly volunteering, and will make her position official at our meeting next week on the 21 May. We still need to fill the position of Canteen Convenor (the canteen convenor leads the canteen committee, ensuring the smooth running of the canteen) It does not have to be a mum, we welcome dads and grandparents too! Please me or get in contact with the canteen if you are interested and would like to know more. Steve Biddulph Screenings This term the P&C will be hosting screenings of Steve Buddulph s Raising Boys and Raising Girls presentations. Raising Boys will be on Wednesday 30 May, at 6.30pm in our school hall and Raising Girls on Wednesday 27 June, also at 6.30 pm in our school hall. Tickets will be $10 each at the door. It will be an informative evening and a great opportunity to catch up with other parents. Mother s Day Stall Our annual Mother s Day Stall was held last Friday with lots of excited children carefully choosing a lovely present for their mum or special person. I would like to thank Sally Terry and her team of helpers for organising running this very special event for our kids. Those little gifts bring about so much joy on Mother s day! Mrs Buckley s Retirement The P&C were very sad to hear of Mrs Buckley s retirement. We have enjoyed working closely with her over the last few years on ways to continually improve and make our school a wonderful place for our students and families. Wendy attends every single one of our meetings and has always done a fantastic job of keeping us informed of happenings within the school and has listened to our feedback and suggestions. We ve been incredibly lucky to have her as our principal and her strong leadership and vision for Bowral Public School will be missed. We look forward to being a part of her farewell celebrations over the coming weeks. P&C Meeting Our next meeting is on Monday evening 21 May at 6.30pm in our school library. Everyone is welcome to come along and have a cup of tea while hearing about what s happening in our school. There is always much to discuss and plan! We d love to see you there!
