1 Heights Happenings Winston Heights Newsletter T E R M 2 W E E K 2 Welcome back! I hope you have had a lovely break with your friends and family. We are gearing up to have a very exciting Term 2. In the holidays, we had a great deal of work completed around the school. Blinds were installed in various classrooms and artificial grass has been placed behind 3A s classroom and under the new seats near the 3-6 COLA. The roof above the office building was replaced. The landscaping around the 3-6 COLA will be completed soon. We welcome two new staff members to our school for Laura Fear is teaching 1W for the rest of this year. Ms Fear has made a lovely impact on her class already. Mrs Pellizzari will be assisting Mrs Wright with the school s K-2 English as an Additional Dialect program. Both teachers have come highly recommended. Please be mindful supervising your children following the afternoon bell. Your child s safety is our concern. Please ensure that your children are in the right place at the right time, always. Parent Information Session It was lovely to hear such positive feedback from our session last term on Positive Behaviour for Learning and BounceBack! Thank you to Miss Goodall and Mr Nicolussi who organised the evening. Many parents were interested in our Blue Award system. Teachers and staff in our school have access to Blue Awards which are given out to students for being safe, respectful and responsible. During assembly, two students awards are drawn from the K-2 and 3-6 box. The students take these awards to the office and receive a voucher for the canteen. Our second Parent Information Session for this year, will take place on Monday 4 th June from 6:00-7:30 pm in our school hall. This free presentation is provided by ThinkUKnow Australia. ThinkUKnow is a cyber safety education program that educates parents, carers and teachers on how people are using technology, the challenges they may face online and how to help them overcome these in a safe and ethical way. A note regarding this information session was sent home last week and the flyer is included in this newsletter. Our P&C will be providing tea and coffee on the evening. RSVP is 31 st May, via the school , winstonhts-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au NAPLAN Online On Tuesday 15 th May, through to Friday 18 th May, our Year 3 and 5 students will be participating in NAPLAN Online Notes have gone home to the parents in these grades. Please contact the office if you need any further information.
2 School Open Afternoon We are holding an open afternoon for new 2019 Kindergarten families on Wednesday 30 th May at 4:30 in our school library. Please encourage your family and friends who are enrolling their children for 2019 to attend. Our P&C will be providing afternoon tea. A flyer is included in this newsletter. RSVP is 25 th May, via the school . Dance Camps/Workshops and Synergy Dance Festival A select group of our dance students have been lucky enough to attend dance workshops and camps. Two students attended the Sydney Dance Company Workshop last term. Nine students attended the Dance Off! three day overnight camp last week and will provide a report in the next newsletter. A big thankyou to Miss Crepaz for organising these events and to the students for being safe, respectful and responsible while away from Winston Heights. Our Stage 3 Dance Group will be participating in the Synergy Dance Festival for the first time at The Evan Theatre, Penrith. Well done, dance group for your fabulous entry submitted to the panel. The dance group will have two performances. The evening performance is 5 th June and the matinee, 14 th June. Tickets have gone on sale and are available for purchase through Ticketek. Come along and support our dance group. Trivia Night The teachers are eagerly arranging their tables for 2018 Back to the 90s Trivia Night. This is a fun event and a great way to meet new parents. All money raised is given back to the school to pay for many essential items. Book your table as soon as possible. $20 per person with tables of eight. This an adults only event. Operation Art This year our school has submitted these artworks to Operation Art, an annual event for the Children s Hospital. Thank you to Jorja 3A and Josh S3S for their wonderful creations. Power of One and Polair Flyover On Tuesday, students K-6 viewed the Power of One anti-bullying show. This was followed by a Police helicopter flyover. Mrs Wright organised these two events to coincide with the National Day of Action against-bullying and Violence. Doesn t our school look great!
3 Peer Support Program Our 2018 Peer Support Program started during the first week of school. Every Wednesday, students from K-6 will be involved in mixed groups participating in discussions and activities about Keeping Friends. The groups are lead by Year 5 and 6 students, who have the responsibility of running the activities and discussions for their session. Friendship skills such as talking and listening, smiling and showing interest in others and sharing and helping others are developed. I would like to thank Miss Goodall, Miss Favell and Mr Gorrie who trained the Peer Support leaders and participated in their own professional development to successfully deliver this program. Mrs Sim, Mr Leeson and Mrs Wright were also involved in the training of the leaders. Please ask your child what happens during these sessions and discuss the skills taught. Please find below a short overview of the main topics for each session. Peer Support Overview of Keeping Friends Sessions Session 1 Being friendly Session 2 Cooperating and listening Session 3 Types of friends Session 4 Being supportive Session 5 The best way to play Session 6 Joining in with others Session 7 Good winners Session 8 A better friend Sporting Success Congratulations to our Cricket team who successfully defeated Quakers Hill PS in the 2 nd round of the State Knockout competition. They are looking forward to meeting their next opponents. Good luck! Mrs Linda Bryant Relieving Principal

8 Messages from The Office As you know we have been having lots of issues with Telstra and our phone lines. We would like to thank you all for your patience during this time. Our two phone lines are still being diverted to one mobile and of course we have to use this mobile to phone out as well. Very frustrating for all involved. Currently Telstra is still trying to fix our issue, they hope to have it resolved by this Friday. We have had a lot of late payments already this year for excursions, this makes it very hard for the office to finalise payments with bus companies and event managements. We hate to see students miss out on excursions, so please check your child s school bag everyday for notes and make sure you have downloaded our school APP for excursion updates. Excursions must be paid for by the due date. * Notes and Money Due back: Canberra Excursion Deposit Payment (Stage 3) - Due by 11th May Zone Cross Country (Qualified Students only) - Due by 24th May Synergy Dance (Senior Dance Students) - Due by 18th May Cheers: Mrs Lee Wood, Mrs Rachael Calvar & Mrs Carolyn Leverton Office Hours am pm Ph:
