It was an extremely moving service attended by over 25,000 people. The students also had the opportunity to lay a wreath, provided by the Morandin family, as part of the service. What impressed me was the variety of ages attending this service which highlighted the respect and honour felt in regards to all who have fought to make our beautiful country what it is today. I would personally like to thank all families as well as students and Mrs Reedman and her husband, who joined me on this special day. Cross Country Carnival Last week we held our Cross Country Carnival. We managed to complete the Carnival about 5 minutes before it started to rain. I would like to thank the many families who joined us on this day and also congratulate the students who will be representing our school at the District Carnival on Monday 25 th May. Finally many thanks to Miss Sharpe, Mrs Denning and Mr Reid for their organisation of this Carnival. 2 Principal s Desk Continued Weekend Success Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending the Sport Aerobics competition at Sutherland with our two school teams. As usual the competition was of a very high standard with many schools and clubs sending teams. However, our teams were outstanding with both performing extremely tight, clean and beautifully choreographed routines. Congratulations to our Senior team who were awarded first place and to our Junior team for achieving an excellent second place. I would like to especially commend Miss Chloe Wilson for her amazing work with our teams. As mentioned the skills and choreography of our teams, with many being involved for the first time, were nothing but incredible. We are extremely fortunate to have such a talented coach. I must admit this old Principal was very proud! I would also like to thank Mrs Wilson and Miss Sharpe for their support of this initiative and for giving up their Sunday to support the teams. While our Sport Aerobics teams were competing, our wonderful school band was also competing at the Battle of the Bands at the Kenthurst Country Fair. I am awaiting a more detailed report however I would like to give a bit of a hint by saying huge CONGRATULATIONS. Before and After School Care As our community is aware, we now have Before and After School Care operating from our school hall. This service is available to all members of our community with a casual service also being available. With colder mornings approaching please consider this service in the mornings if your child needs to be at school early, as staff are not on duty until 8.30am. I would also like to remind all members of our community that the staff car park is not to be used for dropping off students. I am aware we are all in a rush however this car park has only one entry point with visibility being restricted. I have just witnessed a car attempting a four point turn to exit the car park. If we allowed all cars to use this as a drop off zone the safety of our students would be at severe risk as there is simply not enough space. Your support in this is greatly appreciated. ANZAC Writing Competition Congratulations to Tiana Smith on her Highly Commended Award in the ANZAC Writing Competition. The judges were extremely impressed with her writing skills and wonderful knowledge of relevant events in regards to ANZAC history. She received a certificate and Events Cinema gift vouchers. I have seen other samples of Tiana s writing and I am not at all surprised with her award. See her competition writing piece below. Finally I would like to wish all of our mums a fantastic Mother s Day this Sunday! Even though I know it can be one of the most exhausting and challenging roles we undertake, it only takes a cuddle from one of our children to make it the most amazing and rewarding job in the world. The Anzac Legend The Australian involvement in Gallipolli during World World I was to help the British who were fighting in the Turkish peninsula.

This would also allow the British ships to move into and take hold of Constantinapole.

3 The Anzac Legend The Australian involvement in Gallipolli during World World I was to help the British who were fighting in the Turkish peninsula. The reason they were fighting the Turkish was to open up trade routes and release wheat and shipping locked in the Black Sea by the Turkish enemy. This would also allow the British ships to move into and take hold of Constantinapole. The Gallipoli campaign was an important occurrence in Australian history because it came at a time when Australia had just converted into a Federal Commonwealth. Australia didn t have any military records yet, however Gallipoli was to be the first. One legendary Anzac story is about Simpson and his donkey. They arrived at Anzac cove on the 25 th April, It was their job to transport injured militaries to the shoreline to be evacuated and healed. Simpson and his donkey did this until 19 th of May, when a Turkish military solider shot Simpson. This story is significant because it demonstrates how heroic the ANZAC spirit is. The Anzac legend is significant because it inspires all Australians to remember those who sacrificed their lives for our nation. The legend was not formed on basis of their strategic achievements (they didn t win the battle) but because of the way the Australian troops performed. They faced minor chance of success, unfriendly terrain and continuous fire from the Turks; they were enclosed by death, and had scarcely enough supplies. Throughout all this adversity they displayed endurance, courage, discipline and power, which is viewed by Australians as heroic qualities. The men made great sacrafices, the main one being with their lives, and they looked after their mates as if each was like a brother. The men were trying to make this nation not only have their mark on the map, but also prove we aren t just a country descended from convicts. 4 Glenhaven Cross Country Carnival Last week Glenhaven held their K-6 Cross Country Carnival. We were extremely lucky with the weather holding out just long enough for all of our wonderful students to participate in the events. The participation throughout all of the age groups was wonderful to see and was accompanied by some impressive House cheering. I would like to thank all of the staff and parent helpers who played key roles in allowing such Carnivals to be effective and enjoyable for all, from the various perspectives of safety to the extra reward of an ice block being distributed. I would like to thank the House Captains who led by example, supporting their team by leading cheers and preparing younger students for their event and of course, running the course, guiding our beautiful kinder students around in their first Cross Country. 5 Castle Hill Zone Cross Country Carnival The following students will be representing Glenhaven at the Zone Cross Country Carnival (May 25 th 2015 at Masonic Oval). These students have received permission notes and programs for the day. If any student is unable to attend, it is integral that they let Miss Sharpe know as soon as possible as we have plenty of eagre reserves who could be entered as a result. 6 PSSA Representation Update!!! This year, many of our Glenhaven students have been chosen to trial for various zone sporting teams. Many of these students have been selected to not only represent the Castle Hill Zone (17 schools) but also the Sydney West Area! I would like to congratulate the following students for their outstanding achievements in their sporting areas. PSSA Sydney West Softball Carnival On the 30 th March 2015 Joel Davis and Harrison Pilkington represented Castle Hill in a Sydney West Competition. We played 6 games in total with every game running for a total of 1 hour each. The first game we played was against Blacktown at 8:20am and we won. The 2nd game we didn t play because we had a bye but that gave us enough time to eat and rest before the 3 rd game. The 3 rd game we played was against Penrith Blue Mountains and we won. The 4th game, we played St Marys and we won. In Round 5 we played Ridges and won. We made it into the playoffs and we played Merrylands. It was really tough and they were a better team at the end.
