There are only three regular season games left, then the playoffs, so get some wins to improve your standings, but more importantly, get practicing flip cup so you have a shot at the big trophy! Remember, the kickball trophy is huge, but the flip cup trophy is even bigger! We at NAKID know what s really important: beer! There are some great upcoming events to close out the season, leading up to the end of season party. Where did NAKID come from? Back in 2005, another league that shall remain nameless had a division called DC Kingdom, run by the King of Kickball, Joe Paternoster. In Spring 2006, after becoming unsatisifed with the way the other league was operating, Joe and the rest of the members of DC Kingdom decided to form their own league that was based on fun and socializing, not money and competition. They named their fledgling league NAKID (New Adult Kickball In DC), and, with about 150 members, set out to realize their hopes and dreams of a kickball league where the beer flowed like water and the hookups were unregrettable. The league grew exponentially to the almost 2,000-member organization it is today, changing its name to No, Adult Kickball Isn t Dumb (we re not so new anymore, afterall), and the league is still fun, the beer is still free, and we hope the hookups are enjoyable. Have any Sunday teams? survived since the beginning of the league? Yes! Well, sort of. After consulting with a few NAKID historians, the Brew has learned that while many teams have had several iterations over the season, only two teams have been around (and continue to be around) since the very first season DC Hoos and SMAC. DC Hoos, started by a UVA alum when the league was still DC Kingdom, has changed captains, but the name and a few players have persisted. SMAC started off as SOS (Sloppies on Second) in DC Kingdom, too, but when they had a particularly bad season they changed their name to SMAC (Sloppies Making a Comeback), got a new captain, and have been in NAKID ever since! Do toilet seat covers? provide any real protection? Nope, but your seat doesn t really need protecting. All those paper covers do is mentally separate your backside from the countless bums that have occupied the same space. Before anyone gets their panties in a twist, let s listen to a few medical resources: To my knowledge, no one has ever acquired an STD on the toilet seat unless they were having sex on the toilet seat! according to Dr. Abigail Salyers, president of the American Society for Microbiology. As Columbia University s Health Promotion Program sums up: Because toilet seats are not major culprits in spreading disease, paper or plastic seat covers offer little more than peace of mind. In fact, you have more to fear from bathroom door handles and faucets than from commodes. What s this about Indoor? kickball? When can I sign up for that? Saturday, Oct. 10, 5 p.m. It s time again, the NAKID Beerlympics. We have spots for 20 teams of 6 this season! The location of games for the 8th Beerlympics is TBD, but it will be metro-accessible. We will have a scheduled 10 events including team flip cup, Pong, Build Me a Beeryamid, Das Boot and more! To make things more fair we will have a more diversified field of games this time. This is $5 for each NAKID, $10 for Friends of NAKID. Price is per player. Teams are encouraged to dress in costumes. Check in is 4-4:30pm. Slots are limited to only 20 teams. PLEASE ONLY RSVP IF YOU ARE DEFINITELY FIELDING A TEAM! Teams MUST have 6 players (you can have more to sub). The winning team will receive trophies plus the bragging rights! 6 Boomerang to the Renn Fest! Beer, giant turkey legs, and a DD what more could you need? Saturday, Oct. 17, 9 a.m. We ve been wanting to do this for years and now we ve finally got our chance! We re going to the Maryland Renaissance Festival on Saturday, October 17th! Here s the scoop: The MD Renn Fest is held over a series of weekends every Fall just outside of Annapolis. It is a village that is comprised of pubs, stages, food booths and more than 130 craft shops. You can eat, drink, watch comedy and entertainment shows on stage, and wander through the village, enjoying the atmosphere. Every weekend has a theme, like singles weekend, magic weekend, etc. The weekend we re going is Scottish weekend, so you know there will be kilts, Scottish music, and dancing in abundance. Some people (we call them dorks*) dress in full Scottish or Renaissance attire and get in character. Overall, it s tons of fun and there s plenty to do. If you can, watch some of the shows and eat smoked turkey legs (we know Jim from Chuggernauts is now in on this event). We ll meet up at My Brother s Place at 9 a.m. and leave promptly at 9:30am (don t be late or you miss the bus). We ll drink beer on the bus while we drive to the Renn Fest. We ll arrive at 10:45 a.m. and continue the party for 5 hours before meeting back up at the bus at 3:45 p.m. to head on back to DC (again, promptly) at 4 p.m. We should arrive back at My Brother s Place at about 5:30 p.m. It s just $25 for NAKID and $30 for non-nakids. 7 NAKID Indoor Kickball!! The craziest season of kickball there is! For those that have played before, you know what winter is like. For those that haven t, you have no idea until you play. It s more intense (in a fun way) than outdoor kickball. It s more chaotic. And the rules are wacky to keep you on your toes! For instance, you can kick the ball off the walls and ceiling, you can have 2 people on a base, there s a double run inning where runs count as two, you can catch the ball as you run and kick it away to avoid the out, and lots more. We re also offering Indoor Kickball on two days this time, instead of one! Registration is open! It costs just $47 for returning players and $57 for new players. The price will increase SOON! It jumps to $57 returning / $62 new. Go to and click on Register Now in the top right corner of the page. The season will start with our kickoff party on Sunday, January 3rd and games will begin on Thursday, January 7th and Sunday, January 10th (depending on which day you play). The season will be 10 weeks long, including playoffs. We will have 4 chapters for you to choose from: Early Thursday plays at 6:30pm or 7:15pm, starts Thursday, January 7th Late Thursday plays at 8:00pm or 8:45pm, starts Thursday, January 7th Early Sunday plays at 2:00pm or 2:45pm, starts Sunday, January 10th Late Sunday plays at 3:30pm or 4:15pm, starts Sunday, January 10th We ll be playing at the YMCA about 2 blocks south of Dupont Circle (on Rhode Island Ave) and partying it up after our games at a great new bar in DC called BlackFinn (16th and I St), which is 5 blocks south of the YMCA. Everything is metro-accessible. Shirt colors run out fast, and are on a first-come, first-served basis, so you ll definitely need to get moving on this if you want to snag one of the popular colors. 8 Mike Lacy s Kickball Ramblings In NAKID, there are no forfeits. (Actually, that isn t entirely true. If a team completely no-shows, or does something to get themselves disqualified, then they do forfeit. But for the sake of discussion, let s go on the premise that there are no forfeits.) Instead, if a team does not have the required five players of each gender, the other team is awarded a penalty run for each missing person, and automatic outs are given at the end of the lineup. It seems like a fair way to do business. Except what about the other team? In a way, don t they get penalized a bit as well? Because they now have more pressure placed on them than before. If they win, should they really feel good about a victory? How much can a team truly celebrate when they were handed three runs at the beginning of the game, benefitted from two automatic outs (I m going with the scenario that someone arrived after game s beginning), and played a team with only nine players in the field? Especially if they only end up winning the game by one or two runs. And if they still lose, despite the handicap, that can be even more disheartening than an even strength loss would have been. So should a team captain simply refuse the penalty? Absolutely not! The team earned those penalty runs by simply showing up. Apparently that s tougher than it seems since so many teams have players show up late or not at all. So, while some teams strength is having good kickers, and other teams may win because of a good pitcher, some teams strength is simply being able to have their players show up on time. Would a team hold a great kicker out of their lineup because he gave his team too much of an advantage? Of course not. So there s nothing wrong with a team winning due to the missing player penalty.
