1 CELEBRATING 17 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Southeast Michigan Chapter - American Singles Golf Association - February 2010 LETTER FROM THE PREZ Hi all! I hope you re enjoying our mild winter. Seeing the green grass on the front lawn makes me think about tee times. Monthly Meeting Location Changed to Uptown Grill We had our monthly meeting on Thursday, January 21, 2010, at the Uptown Grill on 15 Mile in Commerce. We had a guest speaker, Tami Bealert, a PGA teaching professional. She presented thoughts on winter exercising for improving the golf game. We plan on having Tami return and make a few more quickie pitches. Also, we are trying to bring in additional speakers. Please contact one of the board members if you have a suggestion or lead. Putting Contest After the formal meeting ended, we had a lot of participants try to sink a putt in our putting contest, where $2.00 got you three chances. If you sank the putt, your name went into a drawing pot with the lucky one or two players who had a chance to win. The winner for both drawings was John Kirkish, who won $30.00 in ASGA certificates which will be mailed to him. Way to go John! Following the putting contest we had three tables of Euchre. A fun time was had by all Chapter Plans During the formal meeting, I shared the results of the board meeting which was held in mid-january. Essentially, our goal is to have 40 golf outings for 2010, have more social events throughout the year, advertise our organization to the outside world, improve our communication with the general membership, have greater involvement of the membership chair, and try to follow up on lost members. Mary Ann Wenger, golf chair, Patricia Burry, social chair, and Alice Klavanian, membership chair had their own presentations. A Reminder about Guests It s important to remember that guests can only participate in two (2) sanctioned events in their life time. After two, they must become a member. Hope to see you at our next monthly meeting. Think spring! ~Denny O Neill, President We Want to See You! Thursday, February 18 th ASGA Meeting/Mingler Uptown Grill 3100 E. West Maple Rd, Commerce Twp. (between M5 & Haggerty) Cocktails & Dinner: 6:00 p.m. Meeting 7:00 p.m. New place and new format! Plan on staying after the meeting for socializing, cards, and more! GOLF COMMITTEE REPORT 2010 Golf Season Happy New Year to you all, and thank you for your vote of confidence in electing me as your 2010 golf chairperson. In 2009, our chapter held more than 40 golf outings. The competitive person in me does not want to come in second, so I am hoping all of you will help me fill each Saturday and day of the 2010 golf season with outings. Location: My home, Waterfall, Northville, Mi Home phone: Light snacks will be available. Please RSVP. Bring with you with any ideas or questions you may have. I will be more than glad to assist you with them. If I can take on this job with no ASGA experience, you do not need to be fearful of hosting a golf outing, just because you never have. ASGA has complete guidelines to step you through the process and our Secretary, Gaye Wanner, has a helpful host packet ready of each of you. President, Denny O Neill, will be on hand, and we know he sure knows his way around hosting a golf outing. I am sure each of you has a favorite golf course, so select an open date from the and give me a call to work out the details. The sooner we get your event on the calendar, the more members will be able to mark their personal calendars to be sure to join you. Our current 2010 Golf Season Calendar is included in this newsletter. I am looking forward to personally working with you on filling up these dates. Golfers, be sure to note the dates of the event at your favorite courses, or the ones you have always wanted to play. We all know how the summer calendar can fill up. I myself, look forward to participating in more golf outings in 2010 and meeting more of you on the links Golf Show ASGA will have a booth at the Novi Golf Show from March 5-7, This is a wonderful opportunity to check out new clubs, either individual clubs to enhance your tool selection, or maybe an entire new set. If Santa didn t deliver that gift to you, you can give yourself a present now. I look forward to seeing you there. I ll be the one looking for an entire new set! (Santa completely overlooked me.) Check out their site at index.php Balls, Burgers, and Beer Mike Bartel will be hosting the Balls, Burgers, and Beer event on March 28 at the Oasis Golf Dome. This is the perfect time to warm up for the golf season. I hope to see you there to working on your 2010 golf skills. Early Spring Preparation Early spring is a good time to take a golf lesson to sharpen our skills. I find it helps to start the season with helpful hints from a pro and not with the bad habits I carried forward from the previous season. Set up a private or group lesson with the golf pro now. Since most of us are not using our clubs in the next couple of months, now is a great time to have your grips replaced. Fore! ~Mary Ann Wenger, Golf Chairperson mrstangman@wowway.com DROP-IN TGIF TGIF is off to a rip roaring start! On Friday, January 15th, 19 members gathered at Claddagh Irish Pub, and on Friday, January 29th at Bar Louie in Laurel Park, the numbers climbed to 28. It appears that we have quite a few members who enjoy celebrating the end of the work week with some libation and conversation. Drop-In TGIF is an opportunity to join fellow ASGA friends at different local establishments on Friday nights to unwind. The beauty of this event is that no RSVP is required; you can decide at the last minute if you feel like going out and have a party already started once you get there. Each week, the location will be announced by , so keep your heads up because occasionally we ll skip a week. If you have a favorite place in mind, let my people know. We hope to see you there. And don't forget to ask for your own bar tab; the first week, everyone's drinks and dinners were on Dave Dawson's tab. Thanks Dave! Thanks to Patsy McKenna for coming up with what s proving to be a grand idea! HOLIDAY DINNER MEETING On December 10, 2009, Southeast Michigan ASGA held a holiday dinner meeting at Subu's Leather Bottle in Livonia to celebrate the end of another great year for our chapter. More than sixty people paid to attend this event to say goodbye to the outgoing board members and welcome in the newly elected board. For those of us who ve been around a while, we ve seen this chapter grow from a small group of less than fifty to more than 150 members. Having so many people respond to
3 an event, especially during the holiday time, is quite impressive. The weather cooperated, though it was cold; our private room was wonderfully lit and decorated for the season; and we had friendly staff serving cocktails as we mingled before dinner. The meal was served family style, including top round beef, chicken picatta, a number of side dishes, and cake delivered by Patti Hall and Dave Linkz. Their help was much appreciated! Gauging by the all conversation and laughter, this continues to be one of our most popular non-golf events. With everyone looking so polished and displaying such high spirits, we ll be inspired to keep this tradition going well into the future! Thanks to all who attended. We all extend our special thanks to Diane Taylor for organizing this fun, festive, and memorable night.
