Trouble viewing this ? View it in your web browser newsletter Kilworth Springs Newsletter April 2018 Introduction This month has been filled with lots of competitions and matches to get the season on the way. Congratulations to all the winners throughout April and despite the awful weather we have seen some fantastic scores and some exciting matches. This month s newsletter is filled with more improvements, including some exciting news for our green keeping team. We have also detailed some exciting events which will be taking place over the next month including Chris Clarkes Prostate Cancer and Roger Vicary memorial golf day. We hope our readers are continuing to enjoy our news, but should you have any requests or would like information on a particular topic, please contact Luke Atkins on or latkins@kilworthsprings.co.uk Summer Knockouts The draw for this year s summer knockouts has now been published on the club notice board. Some members have found it difficult to find time for their first match due to the adverse weather conditions and as a result the competitions committee have agreed to extend the preliminary round deadline for a further week (Sunday 13th May). To help other members arrange these matches please ensure your contact information is listed on the notice board along with the result of each match. Club competition matches are entitled to courtesy of the course during weekdays and weekend afternoons. This is a club privilege and should not be abused, if you are arranging a club competition match please inform the professional`s shop when the booking is being made. This will allow the shop staff to notify any players who may be affected by this rule. If you are playing a club competition match and 1/7
being held up you may ask the group in front polity to play through. If they refuse, please contact a member of the team and we will come and explain the situation. Under no circumstances should any group force their way through anyone on the course. Divot Party / Group We are pleased to report success during our first divot party group session which took place on Wednesday 25th April. While we didn t receive as much support as we would have liked the group spent a successful afternoon filling and repairing divots and crow marks on holes 12, 13 and 14. Head greenkeeper, Jack Mayfield was extremely complimentary of their work and has even arranged an additional repair session before Wednesday 30th May. Thanks to these members those areas will now stand a better chance of recovering and as such improve the overall golfing experience for the rest of our membership. If you are interested in helping us please contact Luke at latkins@kilworthsprings.co.uk or Exciting News We are pleased to announce that after several weeks of negotiating we have finally come to an agreement and secured deals for three new mowers. As of next week we will be upgrading our fleet with new Greens, Fairways and Tees mowers. These machines will not only improve the cutting quality but will also speed up the process and ultimately give our greenkeeper team more time to work on other areas of the course. The team are extremely excited to get working with these news machines and continue to improve the course for all to enjoy. Green Keepers Report we are all aware this year s winter has been pretty shocking and drawn out, which has made it very challenging for us out there on the course. Having said that we have achieved almost everything that we set out to do. Starting off with the 11th bunkers which we completed just before Christmas and hopefully you are all enjoying the new change. We have also been picking away at the bunkers when possible by repairing faces and edging, we aim to have them all edged in the next few months. Also we have finished renovation work on the greens and tees. The tees were aerated, over seeded and top dressed as well. As extra repair work on crow damage which is recovering relatively well. The greens were hollow cored, deeply scarified to help eliminate moss, over seeded and heavily top dressed. They are recovering well but we just need more growth in order for the surface to be smoother. Heights of cut have been lowered to summer length (tees 11mm, fairway 16mm, rough 2.5mm, greens 3.7mm. So overall we are happy with how things are progressing, hopefully with some nice weather we'll see more improvement to come Many thanks 2/7
Jack Mayfield Head Greenkeeper Professional Shop The shop continues to improve from month to month. New additions arriving throughout April include items with the club`s logo, such as scorecard holder, T shirts & Jumper, Micro Fibre Towels. All great products priced even better! Custom Fittings Ollie held a successful Launch Day on Saturday 21st April. Those members who were fortunate enough to try some of the new clubs that day will know the benefits of being custom fitted. So why wait any longer and book your fitting to test the most advanced golfing equipment released to date. All fits are completely free when purchasing new equipment otherwise Ollie and his team will charge you for his time. Electric Trolley Rental. The new electric trolleys have been a great addition since arriving last month. The GPS system which is installed in each trolley give a yardage to the front middle and back of the green which could help two or three shots per round. Try one for yourself for as little as 6.00 per 18 holes. Teams All sections were in action throughout April and mostly returning with successful resutlts. The Scratch Team faced Ullesthorpe in their opening game of the season. Despite almost running out of sunlight the team managed to secure a convincing 7 1 vinctory. They wiill look to build on this for the rest of season as they try and secure promotion for the second time in the three years. They will travel to Stapleford Park for their next match on Thursday 10th May. The B Team played Forest Hill on Wednesday 18th April but were unforuantely defreated 3 2. They will also face Stapleford park in their next match on Wednesday 2nd May. Our Ladies secured a 2 and 1 victory over beedles lake in their first round match of the handicap league. Well done to Suzy, Nicky, Peta, Velda and Chris. Their next match away at Ullesthorpe was lost 2 and 1 but a magnificent putt sunk on the 18th by Nicky secured a single win against last year s champions. The club played its first mixed match of the season against Cold Ashby at home on Sunday 15 April. Cold Ashby could unfortunately only raise 7 pairs for the match which was played in very mixed weather conditions. A thoroughly enjoyable time was had by all followed by a typically delicious meal and I am pleased to able to report that Kilworth won the match 5 2. Thanks go to everyone who made themselves available. Lastly, the Senior section as usual had a very busy month opening their 2018 campaign with a string of matches. Their opening game was against Stoneleigh Deer Park and resulted in a defeat by 3.1/2 to 4.1/2 not the best of starts. It didn t get any better on a visit to Overstone on the 9th, where the pairing of Pat Pickering and Paul Ransom found themselves all very wet an bedraggled on the 15th, one up against their opposition. At this point their opponents suggested a walk in draw and in the good sporting tradition of Kilworth Seniors they accepted. It was only at the end of the tie that they found that Kilworth had lost by 3.1/2 to 4.1/2. On the 23rd we played 3/7
away to Beedles Lake and despite our captain suffering a heavy loss the team came away with a 4 all draw. Their next away match on the 26th was against Market Harborough and resulted in a 4 all draw. Ladies The season has really taken off now with the start of league and friendly matches as well as external competitions. Jane Collins won the April stableford with 34 points and 3 pars, closely followed by Dorothy Howie with 34 points and 4 pars but lost on countback. Sue Ruddle recorded her first competition top placing with 32 points, well done to you all. The April medal was played in wet and windy conditions and the winning net score of 85 points and only 2 pars in the top 3 results reflected the difficulty. Chris Atkin won followed by Nicky Collett with net 86 and no pars, with Jane Collins in 3rd place with net 95. Val Foster and Deb West played Market Harborough away in the second round of the Daily Mail Foursomes and lost 4 and 3, again in wet and windy conditions. The return leg of the Taskers was played at home on April 13th and a good score was achieved by the team of Val, Shirley, Sarah, Wendy, Debs and Suzy, winning 4 and 3, they did however have an uphill battle having lost away by 6 and 1. Competitions. Congratulations to Stuart Mance who won the first medal of the season played on Saturday the 1st April. He scored a fantastic nett 69 to clinch a count back victory over Andy Taylor. But this wasn t the only bit of luck / skill Stuart had that day, as he hit his first hole in one on the 6th hole, Congratulations. Peter Vans Prime Life Ball played on Sunday 8th April was won by Dave and Sue Wenlock with a brilliant score of 44 points. Overall a very high scoring weekend with Jamie Cooper and Martin Hoskins coming a close second with 43 points, well done to all those who participated. The Winter League final took place on Saturday 14th April and we have been informed that it was extremely entertaining with match with extra holes needed to determine the winner. The final was made up of Jake Thompson & Lee Jones vs Grant Sharman & Sean Clarke, the later managed to secure victory on the 3rd playoff hole. Well done Grant & Sean. Danny Whelan was the winner of the April Stapleford which was played on Sunday 22nd. Following last year s decision to play all stablefords from the blue tees his score of 39 points was very impressive, well done. Upcoming Competitions 5th May Monthly Stableford Tuesday 8th Midweek 9 Hole Thursday 11th Extra Day Medal Sunday 13th Gibbons Trophy Saturday 19th Summer Trophy R1 Tuesday 22nd Midweek 9 Hole Thursday 24th Extra Day Medal Sunday 27th Monthly Stableford 4/7
UPCOMING EVENTS Roger Vicary Memorial Golf Day July 7th 2018 On Saturday 7th July we will be hosting our annual Roger Vicary Memorial Golf Day. This is our 5th year since Rogers passing in 2012, and each year the event has gone from strength to strength raising over 10,000 to date. All monies raised are donated to Roger`s chosen charity 'Hope Against Cancer' a local charity covering Leicestershire and Rutland with all monies being spent on cancer within the county. Tee times are available from 8am 12pm and can be secured by listing your name on the entry sheet displayed on the club notice board. This will be a great fun day of golf with excellent prizes and with the added benefit of knowing all proceeds from the day are going to a very worthwhile cause. Corporate and Charity Golf Days in May The club is playing Host to a number of Corporate Golf Days throughout June and on these days the tee will be limited to afternoon slots only. We apologies in advance for the inconvenience and hope you can find alternative arrangements for the following days: Friday 1st June Friday 8th June Wednesday 13th Friday 22nd June Competition change of date: Dont forget the club committee and competition chairman have decided to change the qualifying date for the national golf club challenge. This will now take place on Captains day which will be held on July 21st. This year s captains charity chosen by Paul Blyth is supported by the national golf club challenge and as such the reason for change. For those who do not know what the nation golf club challenge, please refer the following link Seniors There were 5 competitions in April including the rescheduled monthly stableford from March On the 6th the April Monthly Stableford was played and was won by Bob Goodacre with 37 points on countback from Neil Cunniffe also with 37. The Arnie Baxendale Greensomes was played on the 12th on a miserable and cold day that saw mediocre scoring. Although our course was in remarkable condition after such a battering by the weather. The competition was won by the partnership of Neil Cunniffe and David Hargreaves who were the only team to break parr with a nett score of The rescheduled Stableford from March was played on the 17th It was won by Alan Gibson who returned 40 points to win, to repeat his triumph in the July Stableford. Steve Linham came second with 39 points, on count back from Dave Storey, also with 39 points. On the 20th the Spring Pairs was played and proved to be a high scoring, very competitive affair. The eventual winners, on count back, was the pairing of Pat Pickering and the on form Alan Gibson with 44 points. Second, with the same score, separated by only one point on the back nine was Seve Linham and Bob Pounds. So Pat Pickering and Alan Gibson find themselves the holders of the Seniors Spring Pairs Trophy for On the 27th was the Four Club Challenge when the Beast from the East was replaced by the Pest from the South West when persistent rain made conditions trying throughout the competition. However the more hardy of our Seniors gave a credible account of themselves. Alan Gibson came first with 37 points after carding 23 points on the first 9 holes. His score was 5 shots ahead of second place man Mark Tidmas and third place Graham Stewart with 32 and 31 points respectively. Well done to Alan who is the 2018 Four Club Challenge champion. 5/7
Foul Language in the Clubhouse There has been an ongoing issue with foul or abusive language in the clubhouse which has resulted in a number of written complaints from several members and visitors. We want to make it clear that this is not acceptable behaviour and will not be tolerated under any circumstances. The club has built an established reputation since opening in 1994 and incidents like this can destroy that reputation. We expect you, as a Kilworth springs member to act in a respectful and honourable way that reflects the clubs image. Unfortunately, these recent incidents do not reflect this and as such we must implement a strict zero tolerance policy for foul or abusive language in and around the clubhouse. Should we be informed that you have failed to comply with these simply rules we will have no choice but to begin disciplinary procedures. We sincerely hope it does not resort to the latter and we can continue to build a fantastic reputation together. The Attic Restaurant The Attic Restaurant will once again offer Pre Theatre dinning from May 29th.
