Riverhill Reporter October 2016 Joe Finger Hall Of Fame Induction Joe Finger, one of the founding designers of the Riverhill Golf Club is now joining Byron Nelson in the Texas Golf Hall of Fame(TGHoF). A celebration will be held this October 10th, 2016 to honor Finger's accomplishments. Join us in celebrating our Riverhill Pride! "A Houston native, Finger, who passed away in 2003 will be honored in the Lifetime Achievement category. He spent 45 years as an architect designing courses all over the world, and his widow Julia said he would be so very pleased to be included among the great Texas architects. 'He started playing golf in Texas at a very early age and played until he was a very old man here. The Texas courses and the ones he did elsewhere meant so much to him.' Finger teamed with fellow TGHoF member Byron Nelson to design the Riverhill Golf Club in Kerrville in 1998 near where he lived and also did a total renovation of Scott Schreiner Golf Club in Kerrville for his final project." From the Press release on Texas Golf Hall of Fame. For more information on the 2016 induction banquet, October 10, and ceremonies along with sponsorships, contact Mary Carriker, Managing Director of the TGHoF at mary@golfsanantonio.org or
From the Desk of John Junker General Manager As we enter into the 4 th Quarter of this year, our appreciation goes out to our incredible membership for what is looking like another successful year at the Club. Membership has almost reached our goal for year end. Our success is driven by the support of our great membership. Please give Bryan a call if you know of any potential members for Riverhill. Winter projects are right around the corner. We will begin scheduling to complete the bunker renovations and are in the final year of our Riverhill Tree Program. In January we will be reroofing the Club again after the June hail storm. One of the most important projects will be the remediation of the Bermuda grass infestation in the greens. Thoughts on Riverhill To most of our members, Country Club living is about camaraderie and fellowship. It is about comfort and enjoying Club activities with your friends and family. Sharing special times together and feeling the ultimate sense of belonging, and living life to its fullest. Food For Thought. Did you know that our food and beverage program is based on living life to its fullest? Not only do we desire our membership to enjoy each experience they have at The Club, we promote eating well. Enjoying great food that is sensible, sustainable, local and delicious. The goodness we prepare for our Members begins with each serving. The freshest available, all-natural ingredients. Our beef, chicken and seafood is never, ever given growth hormones or antibiotics. Akaushi beef also has a high ratio of monounsaturated to saturated fats, which is beneficial to your heart. Our vegetables are mostly farm fresh, locally grown free of preservatives, pesticides and herbacides. Starting in November, our lunch meats will only be Boars Head brand. The meat contains high concentrations of oleic acid, a heart-healthy fatty acid. We know this is different, but we care about each and everyone of our Members. Now when it is time to indulge, just ask the Chef and we will have a few sinners dishes. We understand that all things in moderation are good. On behalf of the staff, we would like to truly thank you for all you do.
Riverhill Proud! Sincerely, From the Desk of Bryan Hargrove Membership Director The holidays are right around the corner. However, it s never too early to count your blessings and reflect on the good things that happened this year. Here are few things that I am happy about: 1. Given the opportunity to come back to Riverhill. This has always been a special place to me. As I come to work each day, I ask myself if Mr. Nelson would be proud of Riverhill over 40 years later. For the most part, I think he would. We can always improve and if we keep that in mind, then things will continue to get better. Riverhill Proud! 2. The timely rains we have had this year. How often have you seen the course as green as it is in September? Not very often, I bet. 3. A membership that really cares about Riverhill. All comments we receive, both good and bad, are taken seriously. If our membership didn t care about our club, we would never know how we are doing. As we inch closer to our goal of 525 members, remember that our referral is still going on. Bring in a new member and receive a credit equal to a month s dues of the member you sponsored. I hope you feel blessed to be a part of the Riverhill family. I know I do! Riverhill Proud! Bryan Hargrove Welcome to our new members that joined in September:

This is probably the very best season for golf here at Riverhill, and you can expect the club to be very busy with MGA play, tournaments, and just plain golf! In the MGA, we have our annual match play event, the fall cook-out, and our annual meeting all in addition to normal play days. So let s get right down to what s going on this fall. The annual fall cook-out is Thursday, October 20 th. It starts with golf at 1PM, drinks at 5:30, and dinner at 6PM. Your meal is already paid for (not your beer no way could we afford all that!), and your significant other can join in for a nominal fee. If mother nature cooperates, we ll be outside on the veranda or the lawn. Mark your calendars now and look for details in an upcoming . On the 21 st, the MGA Championship match play starts. This is invitation only based on the number of points you earned in MGA play through September. Given my year, I m guessing I won t be invited! But those that are invited will find out at the fall cook-out. Next up, we re participating in the RWGA s Great Pumpkin event on Wednesday, October 26 th. It begins with a deli lunch at 11AM, followed by golf, followed by a Harvest Buffet in the mansion. Admission gets you golf, lunch, and prizes (assuming you win, of course!). This is a really fun
event, with two men and two women on each team. The pro shop is keeping a list of men and the women are picking the teams! (Kind of a Sadie Hawkins event, if you remember those). November is a bit of a breather for special events, but then we start right up again with our annual breakfast meeting on December 1 st. The meeting will be at 7AM (!!) followed by golf at 9:30. We ll present a summary of the findings of our annual survey and planned changes for the next year. What, you ve not answered your survey??? Well, it was supposed to close by the end of September, but you still have one last chance: With such a busy social calendar, we ll be down to three play days a month for the fall. The new schedule is published on the website, but here s the gist of it: We re all about Thursdays in October: The 6 th, 13 th, and 20 th. Times and formats vary, including two afternoon starts for those that need to skip out of work to play. In November, we have two Thursdays and one Saturday: The 3 rd, 12 th, and 17 th. Thursday will again be a 1PM shotgun so start thinking of your excuse for missing work now. In December, we ll also have two Thursdays and a Saturday: The 1 st, 8 th, and 17 th. After the 17 th, you ll just have to wait until you get your new clubs for Christmas and try them out before the first play day in January. Whew! I m exhausted just typing up all this. And this is just the MGA the club has a lot of events happening this fall. Get out there and enjoy the wonderful fall weather. Niel Powers Publicity Riverhill MGA Riverhill Women's Golf Association - RWGA Fall is a favorite time of the year for many of us and with October comes the Julia Finger Challenge and the Great Pumpkin. The Julia Finger Challenge players are determined through a points system described in the RWGA Directory. It is twelve players only, with blue and yellow teams, played over two days which are October 11 th and 12 th this year. If you are interested, points begin to accumulate in October for play next year.
Another favorite event is the Great Pumpkin, coming October 26 th. This year the women are inviting the men to join us with each foursome made up of two men and two women players, no spouses in the same foursome. The format is a scramble with deli lunch and golf games beginning at 11:00 with a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. Post play we will await scores and prizes in the Antler bar. All players are encouraged to stay for dinner in the Mansion on your own so invite your non-playing spouse and friends to join you for a harvest themed dinner. The RWGA election is coming up in December with the offices of President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer open to candidates for one year terms. If you want to volunteer or to recommend another for office, please contact Vice-President, Terry Terrell. We all pitch in when needed and good officers will help keep us out there playing golf with friends.
