1 CELEBRATING 21 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Albany Chapter - American Singles Golf Association April 2013 President s Message Spring has sprung and our golf season got off to a good start the last Saturday in March with 12 of us playing at Stadium. Although it was not warm enough for shorts and sleeveless tops, it felt good to be outside even if we had to bundle up a bit. If you haven t been on our website recently, I encourage you to go out and take a look at all the photos posted recently by Don S. We appreciate him stepping up and helping us out even though he is now a married man! Apparently, he still has a little free time even though Angie retired recently and every day is a Saturday. Keep up the good work Don. You will notice that when you click on our calendar from our website, it brings you to meetup.com. We will be using meetup.com to post all our events and encourage you to join. It is free and easy and you do not need to use your real name or post a picture so you can stay fairly anonymous. We have found that it is a great tool to spread the word about ASGA and we ve already attracted some potential members. For those of you who are waiting for an about our Annual Meet and Greet, rest assured we will be having one again this year, but not until June. We are in the process of working out all the details, but we do know it will be at Van Patten on June 21, so mark your calendars. We decided to wait until summer when all the golf courses are in full swing and people have golf on their minds. Hopefully, we will attract people from the North by having it in Clifton Park. It s been a long winter for most of us who are not fortunate enough to get out of the cold Northeast. Fingers crossed that we will have a nice warm spring and a fairly dry warm summer. Don t Miss our first formal golf outing of the 2013 Season KENTUCKY DERBY DAY ASGA MAY OUTING 2013 CAPITAL HILLS AT ALBANY 650 O'Neill Road, Albany, NY ( ) Directions can be found on the website under the links tab. WHEN: Saturday, May 4 with tee times beginning at 11:00. Plan to arrive at the course 1/2 hour before your tee time. COST: The cost for a round of golf and a cart is $55.00 for members & $65.00 for nonmembers. FORMAT: Scramble. Mulligans will be sold at the course. You may purchase two mulligans for $2.00. You may use your mulligans to improve any shot off the tee, on the fairway, or on the green. PRIZES: Longest Drive and Closest to the pin for men and women, and team prizes. PAYMENT: The final date to pay is Friday, April 26. Give the cash or a check (payable to Albany ASGA) to any board member at the Friday night gathering or mail to Mike Congero, Treasurer. Contact us if you need Mike s mailing address. DINNER: Join us after golf for drinks, dinner, awarding of prizes and our Kentucky Derby Party at Martel s, the restaurant located at the golf course. We will have a betting pool for the race and watch it live on Martel s large screen TV in our dining area. DINNER CHOICES: Chicken Parmesan Served over Fresh Pasta -$24.00, Grilled Salmon Served with Rice Pilaf & Vegetable- - $26.00 Note: For those of you who were disappointed with the salmon last year, we have been assured that that it will be much better this year. They are using a different supplier with North Atlantic Salmon. It is grilled now instead of broiled. NY Strip Steak Served with Baked Potato & Vegetable- $28.00 All entrees include tossed salad, coffee or tea, dinner rolls. Tax and tip are included with the price of dinner. 3 The Cabbage Bowl March 16, 2013 Thanks to John, Gary and Beth for organizing our first Cabbage Bowl (modeled after last year s Spaghetti Bowl). Five teams competed for bragging rights and what a great time we had. We especially loved playing NoTap where all our 9 s automatically counted as strikes. The corned beef and cabbage dinner at Portofino after bowling was another big hit with everyone. For an Italian restaurant, they did a great job serving up a delicious Irish specialty. We were very happy to welcome some new faces to the group. We sure hope to see Mary K. and Bill K. again soon at one of our events. Thanks to Jack for being the official event photographer. He took a lot of great pictures from behind. 4 ASGA Hawaii ~By Helene Chapados I just returned from an ASGA trip to Hawaii. There were over 60 people from different ASGA chapters that attended. We had perfect weather, no rain, great dinners, breakfasts, Mai Tais and superb golf. We stayed at the Ritz-Carlton where everything is impeccable. We could see the whales while having breakfast in the morning. Kathleen and I arrived on Thursday and took advantage of the extra days to go on a Helicopter Tour of the Island; the weather was perfect, very little wind and no clouds. We were able to see the Waterfalls, the Volcano, the Rainforest, and so much more. We then had breakfast in a cool little town next door, Paia. At Charley s, we ate macadamia nut pancakes with coconut syrup that were absolutely out of this world! We also ventured in Whaler s Village in Ka'anapali, where we really helped Maui s economy! (A little shopping of course!) We then had dinner at the Hula Grill. We went snorkeling, swimming at the beach and in the pool, went for walks Sunday was St. Patrick's Day, so we took a motor coach to Wailea where a thousand people were for an outdoor Irish celebration at Mulligan s. The sunset was breathtaking! On Monday, we played the Bay Course at Kapalua at the Ritz-Carlton. Jim and I won Closest to the Pin on a very challenging course. On Tuesday, Kathleen and I went whale watching on a Super Raft where we saw many whales. It is very impressive and they were so close! We had dinner at the Merriman's with some people from the group and took spectacular pictures of the sunset. Jim went on a trip to Pearl Harbor. On Wednesday, after having breakfast at the Pioneer Inn in Lahaina, we took the ferryboat to Lanai. Next to the boat, we saw dolphins jumping out of the water. We played the Challenge at Manele (and I thought the Bay Course was challenging!) Bill Gates got married there and I can see why. It is so beautiful! We then returned to Lahaina for a great dinner at Kimo's. On Thursday, We attended a Luau at the Hyatt Regency, while Tim, Jim and Bob went on a submarine trip (120 ft. under water) and whale watching. They also went to Longhi s in Lahaina (recommended by Mike) for a delicious dinner. We later celebrated Tim s Birthday with a cocktail at the bar. Bob wrote: I went on a scenic walk not far from the hotel, but past the Plantation Course and on higher ground. Viewed Banyan trees and other native plants as I walked through the arboretum. Got a distant view of a large watershed area which is supposed to be one of the wettest places on earth with over 300 inches of rainfall per year. On Friday we played the Plantation course. We had better weather then the PGA did when they played the Hyundai Cup! We later had dinner at Ruth's Chris in Lahaina where we said our goodbyes. This was one of the best vacations I ever took. Great company, new friends, fantastic golf There were so many more things we wanted to do, I guess we will have to go back in two years! Next year is Scotland. If it is anything like Hawaii, I am going! Kathleen probably will as well. The guys also showed interest in that next trip. Who else wants to join us? Great place, great price, hard to beat!
