Lewis, R. J. Mance, P.B. Criddle (HO), H. Taylor (6), D. J. Mead (4), Cadet Steward A. Brown (FL), T. Rendell (Form/Betting Analysis) Veterinary Surgeons: Drs. R. Stone, C. McMullen Medical Officer: Dr. A. Majid Stewards today conducted a number of stable inspections of trainers with horses engaged at this meeting and no breaches of the rules were detected and further a number of riders competing today underwent routine drug testing. RACE 1: QA MANAEMENT- VELOSI HANDICAP M LENIENCE (Chris Parnham) Slow into stride. Steadied and taken outwards across heels to obtain running near the 200m. When questioned rider advised that it was his intention to have the gelding ridden in a more forward manner, however after being slow into stride he was not able to do so. KHELEVA (William Pike) Bumped by another runner and carried outwards sharply near the 400m. MR BALFIRE (Natasha Faithfull) Impeded for clear running near the 250m. STEELEYE (Lisa Staples) Jumped awkwardly. WILD STRATUS (Jason Whiting) Rider reported that the filly raced greenly and shifted quickly ground on straightening and bumped another runner. Trainer Mr S. Miller advised that it is now his intention to place a lugging bit on the filly for future starts. Shoeing change: LENIENCE bar shoe off the near fore RACE 2: LD TOTAL HANDICAP M RED PUBLISHER (Lisa Staples) Bumped at the start. Raced wide throughout. Steadied and bumped at the 50m. SUNDAY GAMBLE (Joseph Azzopardi) Raced greenly in the straight. VONUS (Steven Parnham) Jumped awkwardly, striking the inside of its barrier. WAR KSAR (Shaun McGruddy) Lay inwards over the final 150m. Rider advised that the gelding felt uncomfortable in its action throughout running. Rider was shown a replay of an incident near the 50m and was cautioned and advised that in similar circumstances he must make a greater effort to keep his mounts straight. MYSTICITY (Craig Staples) Bumped at the 50m. COCHETA (Brad Parnham) Slow into stride. Impeded for clear running over the concluding stages. DIVIDED HOUSE (Chris Parnham) Bounded at the start. A post race veterinary examination revealed abrasions to both of that filly s fore legs. KAMBALLIE (William Pike) Bumped at the start. Raced ungenerously in the early and middle stages. LIGHTNING RUN (Troy Turner) Dwelt at the start. Steadied approaching the 700m. General: An inquiry was held into the reason for DIVIDED HOUSE (Chris Parnham) blundering from the heels of WAR KSAR (Shaun McGruddy) near the 750m. It was established that RED PUBLISHER (Lisa Staples) shifted inwards causing DIVIDED HOUSE to be tightened and crowded inwards causing that filly to make slight contact to the hindquarter of WAR KSAR with that gelding becoming unbalanced and shifting outwards slightly and shortly after this, DIVIDED HOUSE then blundered.

2 ASCOT: /2 Race 2 continued Jockey Lisa Staples pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under ARR.137(a) for causing this incident and she was subsequently suspended from riding in races for a period of 13 days from midnight 26 December 2013 to midnight 8 January In assessing this penalty Stewards took into account her excellent riding record under this rule in that she had not been suspended since moving to Western Australia approximately five years ago and Stewards also took into account her guilty plea. RACE 3: WELSHPOOL COOLROOMS HANDICAP M ALWAYS A SMILE (Peter Hall) Raced wide throughout. SIREEZE (Chris Parnham) Steadied when racing keenly at the 800m. GO JORJ (Ben Paterson) Slow into stride. When questioned rider advised that the gelding failed to respond to his riding in the straight and was disappointing. Trainer Mr J Miller advised that in his opinion the gelding had been unsuited to racing back in the field and that at its next start, he would instruct that the gelding be ridden in a more forward position in an attempt to improve its performance. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. ROCKY S BROTHER (Takahide Ikenushi) Raced wide throughout. ZEDSPIEL (Craig Staples) Returned having cast its near fore plate during running. GALAXON (Jason Whiting) Slow into stride. Bumped outwards at the 600m. Lay inwards in the straight. Trainer Mr A Durrant explained he would experiment with a bit change to have the gelding race more truly. WORLD DOMINATION (Steven Parnham) Jumped awkwardly. Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. BRANDY BLITZ (Lucas Camilleri) Shifted outwards at the 600m and bumped. ERNIE BOY (Shelby Bowtell) Over-raced in the middle staged. MAGICAL MIST (William Pike) Cast its near fore plate during the preliminary and was replated behind the barriers causing a delay in the start of the race. Buffeted between runners near the 200m and steadied. Rider advised that after getting clear shortly after straightening the mare made some ground but despite receiving some bumping near the 200m it was already under pressure and did not finish the race off as well as expected. Trainer Mr G Williams advised that the mare, in his opinion, appeared to resent racing tightly and bumping with another runner near the 200m. A post race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. WOODSVILLE (Lisa Staples) Raced wide from the 600m. Held tight and bumped approaching the 200m. RACE 4: PERTH ICEWORKS WA ST LEGER M NORTHPACE (Daniel Staeck) Impeded on straightening and angled out at the 250m to obtain clear running. When questioned rider explained that when the pace quickened prior to the 600m, the gelding was left flat-footed and he then elected to ride the gelding forward and to the inside of other runners to make up ground rather than take the gelding wide. He further explained that it became impeded for clear running on straightening and was angled outwards before getting clear near the 200m and then finishing the race well. CRUMPET O REILLY (William Pike) Raced keenly in the middle stages and was ridden forward after racing wide to attain the lead near the 1300m. CIVIL RIGHTS (Jason Whiting) Slow into stride. Over-raced in the early and middle stages. Raced wide from the 1000m. Returned having cast its near hind plate during running. MOREISH (Troy Turner) Raced wide on straightening. LOOKING AHEAD (Shaun O Donnell) Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Held up from clear running from the 500m to the 250m. VITAL EDITION (Peter Knuckey) Held up for clear running between the 250m and approaching the 100m. Held up for clear running until the 100m.

3 ASCOT: /3 RACE 5: STARSTRUCK CLASSIC M ROSE OF CHOICE (Peter Hall) Held up from the 500m until the 200m. When questioned regarding the performance rider advised that the mare was unable to improve into the race and was held up until the 200m which had detrimentally effected its performance. DARLINGTON ABBEY (Jason Brown) Bumped inwards at the 1400m and shortly after was carried inwards and dipped from heels. ANGEL ROSE (Shaun Meeres) Brushed approaching the 1400m. BALMONT GIRL (Shaun O Donnell) Raced wide throughout. EVEN ASTAR (Brad Parnham) Pulled hard in the early and middle stages. PASSION CANTATA (Craig Staples) Steadied at the 1400m. Raced keenly in the middle stages. ROSALIE (Jason Whiting) Slow into stride. STAY LADY STAY (Kyra Yuill) Raced wide throughout. General: An inquiry was held into the reason for DARLINGTON ABBEY (Jason Brown) dipping from the heels of DOUBT YOU CATCH ME (Daniel Staeck) when that mare shifted inwards with PASSION CANTATA (C. Staples which was following being steadied as a consequence. Jockey D. Staeck was found guilty to a charge of careless riding under ARR.137(a) for allowing his mount to shift inwards when insufficiently clear resulting in this interference. Jockey Staeck was subsequently suspended from riding in races for a period of 13 days from midnight 21 December 2013 to midnight 3 January In assessing this penalty Stewards took into account that Mr Staeck would be missing the prime metropolitan meeting on 1 January RACE 6: R.S. CRAWFORD STAKES M THE RISING (Paul Harvey) Trainer Mr T. Andrews advised that it would now be his intention to send the gelding for a spell. ACORNS (Shaun O Donnell) Bounded at the start and lost ground. Held up for the entire length of the straight. DOMINATING (Brad Parnham) Lay inwards in the early stages of the straight with the rider pulling the whip with the left hand and shortly after the gelding lay outwards considerable. DUETON (Jason Whiting) Held up for the majority of the straight. HIGHLY TOXIC (Colin Haddon) Raced wide throughout. MAGNIFISIO (Jason Brown) Raced keenly through the early and middle stages. RECODE (Peter Knuckey) Held up from on straightening until the 150m. TEEN IDOL (William Pike) Raced wide throughout. RACE 7: LD TOTAL C.B. COX STAKES M LUCKYGRAY (Shaun O Donnell) Raced in close proximity and brushed on a number of occasions when passing the winning post on the first occasion and thereafter raced keenly in the early stages. Trainer Mr T. Andrews advised that the gelding will now be sent for a spell. PLAYING GOD (Brad Parnham) Commenced awkwardly. MR MOET (Peter Hall) Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Mis-strode and became unbalanced at the 300m. Trainer Mr A. Durrant advised that the gelding will now be sent for a spell. ROHAN (Glenn Smith) Raced in restricted room and bumped with another runner at the 100m and steadied. KINCAPLE (Daniel Staeck) Raced wide through the early stages and then took up a forward position leaving the 1600m to race to the lead leaving the 1400m. Bumped with another runner when laying out when approaching the 100m. IHTSAHYMN (Steven Parnham) Lay inwards in the straight and bumped with another runner at the 150m. Shoeing change: TALENT SHOW bar shoes off General: Jockey S. Parnham (IHTSAHYMN) was cautioned for allowing his mount to shift inwards near the 150m, making contact with ROHAN (G. Smith).

4 ASCOT: /4 RACE 8: B & T WATSON MEMORIAL M COMFYSOFA (Jason Whiting) Fractious in the barrier prior to the start. Held up for clear running from the 450m until taken inwards near the 150m and in doing so bumped another runner. SHINING KNIGHT (William Pike) Slow into stride. Steadied when blocked for clear running between the 400m and the 350m. FLAG OFFICER (Craig Staples) Jumped awkwardly. Bumped inwards at the 150m. SHAWAIM (Shaun Meeres) Bounded at the start. Bumped at the 150m when compounding. ACCRUAL (Shaun O Donnell) Held up for the majority of the straight. COCKY BOY (Glenn Smith) Rider reported the gelding hung outwards throughout which placed him at a disadvantage throughout. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be mildly lame in near fore. DARK ROCK (Chris Parnham) Raced wide throughout. KING OF THE PALACE (Paul Harvey) Jumped awkwardly. Raced ungenerously in the early and middle stages. Held up for clear running from the turn into the straight and when angling outwards near the 200m steadied. Shortly after was again held up for clear running and steadied. SO SYMBOLIC (Peter Knuckey) Raced keenly in the early stages. Approaching the 900m steadied after improving onto heels. LITTLE SHADOW (Troy Turner) Raced wide from the 800m. GENERAL Routine specimens were taken from all winners, and Race 3 unplaced ALWAYS A SMILE, Race 6 2 nd placed EXCELORADA, Race 7 2 nd placed KINCAPLE Pre-race blood samples were taken from: Race 3 ALWAYS A SMILE Race 4 FANCY FEET Race 5 Race 7 ROSE OF CHOICE, DOUBT YOU CATCH ME, RED HOT SAX LUCKY GRAY, PLAYING GOD, MR MOET, ROHAN, KIMCAPLE, BLACK TYCOON ELITE BELLE, IHTSAHYMN WITHDRAWALS AFTER FINAL ACCEPTANCES Race 6 MILITARY SECRET kicked to the near hind SUMMARY Fines: Race 3. 5 ASCOT: /5 LATE REPORTS Geraldton, Saturday 23 February 2013 Robert & Margaret Gaston 50 th Wedding Anniversary Hcp After advising that the mare was going to be retired, the connections have reconsidered and decided to place DOUBLE SWIRL back into a training programme in an endeavour to have her to race again. Ascot, Saturday 14 December 2013 Race 6 The ABN Group Employee of the Year Trophy (2400m) When further questioned, Trainer Mr D. Morton advised that he had expected a slow to moderate pace in this race and consequently he had instructed COUGHLIN S LAW (Jarrad Noske) to settle the gelding on the pace and then allow it to improve from passing the 1600m and create a genuine pace from thereon which he believed would suit the racing manner of the gelding. He further stated that such tactics had not assisted the gelding today given that there was already a strong pace prior to COUGHLIN S LAW being taken outwards and ridden forward by its ridder to fulfil his instructions. He added that he would instruct that the gelding be ridden in a similar manner where possible in the future. Stewards accepted the explanation of Mr Morton, however he was reminded of the provisions of ARR.135A to notify Stewards of any change in riding instructions in future. Race 4 E O Norton Memorial (1200m) Trainer Mr A. Mathews advised that following the race MISS RADLER was found to have muscle stiffness over the hindquarters and it was now his intention to trial the mare on Monday 23 December Ascot, Wednesday 18 December 2013 Race 5 Perth Ice Works Handicap (1400m) Trainer Mr Damian Miller advised that upon return to the stables COBBLE LANE was found to be lame in the near side fore with a suspected injury to the suspensory ligament. He further advised that consideration will now be given to retiring the gelding. B.W.
