3 2017 BREEDERS CUP FRIDAY Race 6 Juvenile Fillies Turf A couple of North American players figures to be prominent from the break, with ULTIMA D and DIXIE MOON both quick enough to contend for the early pace. The former projects to be quickest from the gate, but it's easy to see those two setting responsible splits with a chasing pack queued up a couple lengths back. RUSHING FALL is the 7-to-2 morning line favorite, but I think she vies for favoritism with HAPPILY. RUSHING FALL has done nothing wrong in a couple of really impressive efforts, but her late-running style might leave her a bit vulnerable to HAPPILY, who appears capable of sitting a slightly more tactical trip. HAPPILY has been impressive in a pair of Group 1 scores recently, and she finishes with a little bit of grit which should benefit her here if she winds up with the jump on the closers. SIGNIFICANT FORM leveled off nicely in that Grade 3 win last out, and that kind of staying ability may translate well here. JULIET CAPULET will seemingly be one of the overlooked Euros, but she has been heading in the right direction and turned in a gutsy score at Newmarket last out when refusing to lose. - By BRIAN W. The speed of the speed may be SHARP AZTECA and Paco Lopez is known for getting them out of the gate quickly. MOR SPIRIT, BATTLE OF MIDWAY and possibly GATO DEL ORO & ACCELERATE might try and get on (or close to) the lead early. This may set up for a mid-pack closer with tactical speed. MOR SPIRIT is on a 3-race win streak. His 117 Beyer in the Met Mile is the field s highest. He has the Baffert/Smith magic working for him. MOR SPIRIT hasn t run at Del Mar, but is 3-for-3 at this distance. This race will evolve around what Mike Smith does with MOR SPIRIT. Does he move with the speed or lay back for a run? If he runs with the speed, it benefits the closers. 1 Iron Fist 30 2 Giant Expectations 15 3 Sharp Azteca 7/2 4 Gato Del Oro 50 5 Awesome Slew 10 6 Mor Spirit 2 7 Cupid 8 8 Accelerate 7/2 9 Battle of Midway Practical Joke 10 Race 7 HPN Consensus Picks Dirt Mile This could have been a repeat of the Metropolitan with SHARP AZTECA going to the lead and MOR SPIRIT laying to his outside throughout but in this race, when you add BATTLE OF MIDWAY and GATO DEL ORO to the pace, Mike Smith may have to drop back a slot or two while the added speed compromises SHARP AZTECA. This race sets up for MOR SPIRIT if he lays 3 rd or 4 th or a closing longshot. 6-Mor Spirit 8-Accelerate 3-Sharp Azteca 5-Awesome Slew QUIET EXPECTATIONS (12-to-1) could be the overlooked longshot. This race sets up for his closing kick and he will be running at his preferred distance. He ran a great winning Grade 2 Pat O Brien, where he closed from 6th against CALCULATOR. PRACTICAL JOKE (6-to-1) is a moderate longshot, but if MOR SPIRIT fails to win, PJ could be the benefactor of the early speed. He will be on my multi-race tickets! 5 2017 BREEDERS CUP FRIDAY Race 8 Juvenile Turf With a wide array of Europeans, it s difficult to project pace. But this much we know: Of the Americans, HEMP HEMP HURRAY figures to be lone speed for a Wesley Ward barn that won this race with the speedy Hootenanny in FLAMEAWAY could sit a forward trip. Deep closers have their work cut out for them. US NAVY FLAG redirected to the Juvenile and altered the leading role in this race. Now we have 9-to-2 morning line favorite MASAR. He was beaten by filly Happily at Chantilly last out and we get the benefit of seeing how Happily runs in the Juvenile Fillies Turf earlier on the card as well as past rival September. How those 2 fillies go, perhaps is how MASAR will go. Let s take a waitand-see barometer on the JT chalk until after Race 6. Note that the UK bookmakers have MASAR and MENDELSSOHN trading virtually at the same price (9-to-2 / 5-to-1). Newmarket preps have set up a remarkable 4 Juvenile Turf winners, and the uphill finish likely has a lot to do with it. MENDELSSOHN stayed on very nicely and strode away from the rest when 2nd-best in the Dewhurst. Finishing will not be an issue. Don t get as caught up in overblown trouble for UNTAMED DOMAIN in the Summer as you do the sharp visual finish. He reached out nicely in a sparkling last furlong in :11.80 almost as if was only let loose for that spurt. RAJASINGHE (30-to-1) could be the overlooked Euro after an 11th-place Middle Park run. Trainer Spencer hinted in the days before that race that his horse didn t want soft ground. 6 2017 BREEDERS CUP FRIDAY Race 9 Distaff Distaff With a trio of speedy types flanking either side of the field, the pace is likely to be solid. CHAMPAGNE ROOM and STELLAR WIND, drawing side by side from the rail, insure some lively early fractions; and PARADISE WOODS on the outside, fairly one dimensional herself, could prove the quickest of the 3 with a good break. STELLAR WIND is the elder stateswoman and hard to knock with a perfect 3-for-3 slate at the track to go with her 5 Grade 1s and her tactical early turn of foot. The mare is head & shoulders more accomplished than these, having beaten the mighty Beholder twice and nearly winning this event at Keeneland in Still, she ll be trying to win following more than 90 days rest and she s 0-for-3 at the mile and one-eighth distance. ABEL TASMAN got away from the gate awkwardly in the Cotillion last out and then made a premature move while inside horses down the backstretch, took off with her Hall of Fame rider Mike Smith and was unable to sustain a game effort through the stretch, while definitely the best horse in the field despite her runner-up finish. If not for that loss, the filly would likely be morning line favorite. Since breaking her maiden, PARADISE WOODS only losses have come in the sloppy Kentucky Oaks and after stumbling at the start of the Torrey Pines in her first start off a 3-month layoff. ROMANTIC VISION has a habit of not getting away from the gate smoothly and often consequently runs into traffic trouble. 1 Champagne Room 20 2 Stellar Wind 5/2 3 Mopotism 50 4 Abel Tasman 4 5 Elate 3 6 Forever Unbridled 5 7 Paradise Woods 4 8 Romantic Vision 30 Race 9 HPN Consensus Picks Distaff 2-Stellar Wind 5-Elate 4-Abel Tasman 7-Paradise Woods 6-Forever Unbridled Distaff Consensus top pick earned the smallest vote total of the 4 Friday races and the 2-point spread from the 1st to 2nd choices is the closest of Friday s races. While not likely to be a huge price, PARADISE WOODS could offer the best value as the leastaccomplished in the field and the least-hyped, despite an impressive win going into the race. - By CATON BREDAR

RACE 7 Dirt Mile #6 Mor Spirit: Met Mile winner hasn t been seen since, but it s Baffert and Smith on a big day; the one to beat. #8 Accelerate: Dmr lover drew wide but will be close throughout, and the 1m is a big plus; expecting a big run. #3 Sharp Azteca: The speed will have to wire them, but if the track is souped up, he may not look back; scary. #5 Awesome Slew: Stretch runner may not be a two-turn horse, but he ll be a price and gets pace; can close. RACE 8 Juvenile Turf #6 Masar: Exits a good 3 rd to Happily, adds Lasix and doesn t meet much in here; may be too tough for these. #2 Untamed Domain: Stretch runner got up at WO and will close, but must work out a trip; seems a must-use. #12 Hemp Hemp Hurray: The speed got caught at WO but will be loose and could wire; just may last today. #7 James Garfield: Euro GII winner gets tested for class but seems to have some talent; definite late threat. #1 Mendelssohn: O Brien colt will save all the ground and that 2 nd to Navy was a breakthrough; price chance. RACE 9 Distaff #2 Stellar Wind: Veteran miss is 3-for-3 over the track and that 10/28 work says it s go time; call in a scramble. #5 Elate: Rapidly improving 3yo must step up, but is all the rage locally and is the now horse; very playable. #4 Abel Tasman: Tricky read regressed last time and seems to have peaked, but it s Baffert and Smith; using. #7 Paradise Woods: The speed is dicey at 9Fs but looks loose off that huge GI win last time; the one to catch. #6 Forever Unbridled: Underrated gal ran down Songbird on the square but needs pace help; mixed signals. MAIN PK4 TICKET: 2 w w 6-2 w = $20 for $0.50 SPREAD PK4 TICKET: w w w = $150 for $0.50 Strategies/Options: We re giving two suggested tickets here, one that heavily capitalizes on our consensus picks, and one that is also taking a big stab with some of our secondary price contenders. This is the type of sequence, especially in the last three legs, that doesn t appear to have an overwhelming favorite, so a 5-1 winner could be a lot more within the Pk4, so the deep spread ticket has some built-in value if one or more of our prices can get home. He has demonstrated fitness in the morning and will have Flavien Prat aboard today. He has won at 7Fs and with sharp tactical speed can be spotted on or near the lead throughout. R5 Dmr #3 Destin (5-1) Our Eyes: Pletcher has raced him lightly this year and you can toss last in the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup where he stumbled at the start. I really like this move and he ran a great 1 ½ miles in the 2016 Belmont so don't see the distance being a problem. Nice price for a horse that may be sent to the lead early. The contenders are the ones who are high-spirited early, and that should separate the haves and have-nots. ALLURING STAR has been the table-setter in her 2 races and has no choice but to have the lead. MOONSHINE MEMORIES didn t take long to engage ALLURING STAR in the Chandelier and coasted in. Not only will those 2 decide the pace, they likely decide the finish. Up close in her 1- turn races, SEPARATIONOFPOWERS will have to send to overcome her outside post. MOONSHINE MEMORIES is the lukewarm morning line favorite lukewarm only because her name is not attached to Baffert or Brown. She s a two-time Grade 1 winner and was not favored in any of her three races. Trainer Simon Callaghan got two of her three career starts on the Del Mar surface, which never hurts. Perhaps the most notable feather in her cap was the way she responded when sent two turns for the first time. She put away pacesetting ALLURING STAR and this one should have a similar setup. SEPARATIONOFPOWERS got no favors when she drew the outside No. 13 post, but that shouldn t be a deterrent for you if you like her chances. She has enough speed to get in a much better position. The only question is how much energy she ll expend to make that happen. CALEDONIA ROAD improved position in both of her races and gets Mike Smith. Despite having the popular pilot, she won t be among the favs, but is one who could benefit if a speed war develops, as could PRINCESS WARRIOR. 13 2017 BREEDERS CUP SATURDAY Race 5 Turf Sprint Turf Sprint Always come into this race expecting a highoctane pace, but this year's field doesn't bring an excessive amount of early burn. LADY AURELIA should show speed to be prominent, but we should also see BUCCHERO forwardly placed. Several of them will want to line up in that front part of mid-pack, where horses like DISCO PARTNER and COTAI GLORY might get decent runs of it. LADY AURELIA and MARSHA figure 1-2 in the wagering, and the former is likely to head to post as the chalk, despite losing in their most recent matchup. 'AURELIA has really done nothing wrong in her career, and her experience in American-style racing gives her an edge on the formidable Euro filly. The British bookmakers have LADY AURELIA solid around 6-to-5. The August race at York between the two choices was a sharp display from two extremely talented fillies. LADY AURELIA looked on her way to victory before a last-second rush from MARSHA to nip her at the wire, but with that coming on a straight, the trip might be a bit tougher from off the pace at Del Mar. DISCO PARTNER was supposed to win his last at Belmont, but I loved the way he came away in the lane. COTAI GLORY made a pretty nice first impression in North America when second at Woodbine, and he has enough tactical pace to get a pretty cozy run of things. ZIPESSA didn t need the front last out, but sometimes can be a pace threat. LADY ELI may get a first-over bid. The first flight looks dangerous. LADY ELI is as good as ever and 13-for-13 in the exacta. The shorter trip makes her even-more stout this time than when missing narrowly a year ago to QUEEN S TRUST. Add in a favorable pace and LADY ELI would be an overlay at the 5-to-2 morning line offering. She is trading at that number or lower in every European bookmaker s shop high praise considering their nationalism with RHODODENDRON the only other horse consistently offered under 6-1 overseas. The top 3 in the Flower Bowl were about a length apart and common races are great uses of video inspection. Can we flip the script, or was the result trustworthy? While DACITA closed best on paper, WAR FLAG never appeared threatened by that one and actually galloped out best of DACITA. But this was not a turn-of-foot kind of race that screams success at a shorter 1-1/8 miles or over a quicker Del Mar surface, and GRAND JETE was not effective on the front end despite a modest tempo for the class. ZIPESSA has some pace versatility and (at 20- to-1 in the morning line) comes off one of her best career efforts. DREFONG has a bad experience two races back at Del Mar breaking from the two-post in the Bing Crosby ducking in at the gap soon after the start dumping jockey Mike Smith. TAKAFUL and IMPERIAL HINT breaking from the eight and nine posts will take advantage of being clear of the early congestion. DREFONG will be the public choice for the high percent team of trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Mike Smith. I worry about DREFONG and the inside post and have been impressed with IMPERIAL HINT who has blistering early speed and could find it feasible for jockey JJ Castellano to take the track early posting a mild surprise. DREFONG rebounded shipping to Saratoga trouncing a good field in The Forego at seven furlongs. IMPERIAL HINT does not need the lead and should get a stalk and pounce trip from the ten-post. ROY H has been working impressively for trainer Peter Miller and MIND YOUR BISCUITS was third last year in the BC Sprint won by DREFONG. Both ROY H and MIND YOUR BISCUITS will keep the pressure on the favorite DREFONG. 17 2017 BREEDERS CUP SATURDAY Race 9 Mile Mile The Mile pace changed drastically when MIDNIGHT STORM opted to run in this race, even though it was his second preference; and it really changed when he drew the rail, which will force his hand. Adding to the early heat is that the other pure speed, HEART TO HEART, drew next door. HEART was a horse who was a potential Lone F a week ago, but now looks destined to duel and set things up for the stalkers/closers. RIBCHESTER has long been regarded as the best miler in Europe, but no one is confusing him with Goldikova or Miesque, and as someone quite familiar with overseas form, his title is as much about who wasn t, as he was not to mention Americans have won 5 of the last 6 in the Mile. And while RIBCHESTER did win a trio of Group 1s in the Lockinge, Queen Anne and Prix du Moulin, you could make the case that he didn t beat a true Group 1 horse in any of them. He s not favored by nearly any of the English bookmakers, who fancy WORLD APPROVAL. LANCASTER BOMBER was buried behind a wall of horses in the Woodbine Mile and gave up first run to WORLD APPROVAL, but ran on when free and figured close with a clean run. HAZIT has been close up with fast fractions in his two races and likely will make his mark early on. He faded in a one-turn mile at last time but may not have to use a lot to get to the lead. Distance is the question for this one. BOLT D ORO has been a real pro and can either go to the lead or settle. BOLT D ORO could be one of the more-solid public choices of the day. He earned that with his crushing win in the Front Runner and earlier in the Del Mar Futurity over this strip. The company will be better. He s not just really good, he s local. BOLT D ORO, clearly the one to beat, really flexed the muscles in the Front Runner, indicating he improved from already impressive sprints. Expect another huge effort and more proof that he s a special kind of colt. FIRENZE FLAG won 3 of 4 on the opposite coast and was quite impressive in a sweeping move for a win in the Champagne. He answered some 1-turn distance questions and is sharp going into this. SOLOMINI has been packed a bit wide in his races and could be very dangerous with a ground-saving trip. FREE DROP BILLY improves with distance. GOOD MAGIC is a maiden, but nearly won the Champagne. He s clearly a talented colt from the Brown stable and can carve out a good trip. Being a maiden should help him by a few points on the tote. HAZIT has speed and will have his sights on a steal. Sharp-working GOLDEN DRAGON has had nothing but trouble but is a late mover who may make tris/supers interesting. 19 2017 BREEDERS CUP SATURDAY Race 11 Turf It s a bit in the eyes of the beholder, but this handicapper thinks the pace will be slow and HIGHLAND REEL is loose while OSCAR PERFORMANCE will stalk, for two different reasons. First, the former wired this race last year by gutting the field and his inside draw says he ll try it again. Second, Brian Lynch and Jose Ortiz found the latter couldn t get 1 ½ miles last time at Belmont, so why would they want to duel with the defending champ, especially when they are tactically drawn outside of him? ULYSSES is formidable, and arguably the second-best middle-distance turf horse in Europe, but it s also not as if he ever gave Enable a scare either. But like Ribchester in the Mile, you re also allowed to ask Whom did he beat? in the Group 1 Juddmonte International and Coral Eclipse, as both Churchill and Barney Roy were 3yos trying older and past a mile, and the former especially has been exposed since his dual-guineas wins. If there s a plus, it s that Stoute not only had this race in mind all year, but has always said he expects ULYSSES to relish the fast and firm turf at Del Mar. HIGHLAND REEL is a slight favorite with nearly all of the UK bookmakers. ITSINTHEPOST keeps finding trouble in the stretch, but keeps delivering big runs; so if he ever does get a clear trip, he could freak, and his tactical style says Saturday might be the day. ITSINTHEPOST is not this kind, but as mentioned above, he s run big of late under extenuating circumstances. He likely would have used his speed regardless of what post position he drew. With 100% of the attention given to the likely favorites, ARROGATE and GUN RUNNER, it s COLLECTED who has won 4 straight and should be considered dangerous with 4-to-1 or 5-to-1 odds attached. GUN RUNNER will likely take his usual, stalking position and make a move on the turn. Will it be ARROGATE or GUN RUNNER? Hmm, do you prefer baked lobster or filet mignon? Or on TV, Breaking Bad or The Walking Dead? Either will be in the 8-to-5 or 9-to-5 range when they go to post. If in kind, the Astros and Dodgers can independently win 100+ games during the grueling regular season and SINCE they went 7 games to decide the World Series, is it unmanly to view it as it should be a toss of the coin? Visual handicapping experts cannot separate the two favorites. Both show no signs of stress and appear to be in superb form. It defies logic to surmise that ARROGATE dislikes the Del Mar track when he ran a 0 on the Ragozin Sheets in the Pacific Classic in mid-august over that very oval.
