2 DC Report On Sunday April 6th 7 TPRC riders Laura Johnstone, Ellie Gillow, Jayde Walters, Madeleine Pearn, Georgie Elias, Bethany Hirst & Chloe McFarlane represented the club at the State Dressage Championships held at Inglis Pony club in Wynyard. It was a fantastic event and all riders competed well with some good results across the board. Laura Johnstone on Kapajoh finished 3rd in the Elementary and Ellie Gillow on Gretel placed 4th in C Group. With many thanks to Jo McFarlane for coaching the group for the event. Coming up next on the Ponyclub Calender is the Northern Zone Games competition to be held at Edinburgh Park on Saturday May 10th. We have a very enthusiastic bunch of games riders, so much so that we have selected 3 teams for the event! Congratulations to the following riders: Senior Melissa Chugg, Jackie Harvey, Bailey Elias, Emily Hirst & Emma Cowling (Laura Chalmers reserve) Junior Cowling Laura Chalmers, Madeleine Pearn, Georgie Elias, Chelsea Baker & Chloe McFarlane (Brooke Hanham reserve) Junior Towns Brooke Hanham, Amber Richards-Allan, Emily Kilby, Amber Towns & Alice Chalmers (Bethany Hirst reserve) We wish all the riders and coaches Theresa Elias, Sandra Cowling & Nick Towns the best of luck for the day they have all been training hard and it should be a great day of competition. A couple of reminders..the club has two designated First Aid people, Toni Kilby and Jeanene Gillow. In the event of an incident, particularly a fall, one of these people needs to be contacted ASAP. Please do not move people or bring them to the first aid people without them having been assessed first as there is the possibility this can cause further harm. There are certain precautions that need to be taken when someone has had a fall, especially if there is any neck or back pain and we need to be very mindful of this when something happens. If anyone has any photos of riders out and about at competitions please them into Jess Pyke it s always lovely to read the newsletter and see pictures of what our members have been up to over the last month. At our April rally Ava Walker will be coming along for her first trial rally please make her feel very welcome by helping her out and showing her where to go if needed. Ava we all hope you enjoy your first rally and have lots of fun! I hope everyone had a great Easter and a chance for some time with family & friends. Madeleine & I will be away for the next rally so Theresa Elias will be acting DC - we hope everyone has a great day and we look forward to seeing you all in May. 2
3 Group allocations With so many new members joining in the last couple of months, you may be interested in how your child is allocated to a group for pony club. Allocating riders is one of the most difficult tasks we face and undoubtedly there is always someone who feels they should be somewhere else. You may be interested in the guidelines we use when allocating riders to a group. The Pony Club movement throughout the word holds its base in its testing system. Therefore this is the first and foremost criteria we look at. As a Club, we are bound to offer instruction to our riders based on the test system, and thus where riders are undertaking the same or similar tests, they are likely to be put into the same group so that instruction can be provided in an efficient way. This is particularly relevant to riders through to at least C test level which most riders achieve, but also through to K/C* which many go on to. Ability, age and friendship groups are also taken into consideration as is the number in the group as we try not to have any more than five in a group where possible with an absolute maximum of six. As riders progress in age, so too does their riding ability and understanding. In most cases once a rider turns 15 or 16, the riders in the group are all learning, understanding and progressing at a similar rate. This is when group allocation becomes a little trickier. Again, where riders are undertaking tests, they will generally be in a similar group and for those not undertaking a test, the age and friendship factor is taken into consideration. At this stage, riders tend to stay in their group throughout the rest of their pony club life. TPRC Coaches are for the most part qualified and part of their training covers teaching riders or horses of various levels in the same group. In this situation, the more advanced combinations will always be given consideration and if appropriate will be allowed to undertake ridden activities at a higher level to satisfy their needs. This is not unlike a school class where more gifted students are given extended activities they are not simply put up into the next class with older more mature students. By the same token, a rider would never be taken out of a group and placed with younger riders just because they have a new or green horse unless they request it. This is very important to remember because everyone will be in this situation sometime during their riding career and riders are expected to respect these combinations. For the most part at pony club, we find that riders are happiest when they are riding with their friends. We endeavor to make all our riders happy but inevitably there will be some glitches. Please be understanding and come and talk to me if you have any concerns. Kylee. Well done Well done to the TPRC riders that competed at the State Eventing Championships at the weekend. The two day competition was held at the Fairlands course, riders competing included: Isabel Gibson, Emily Ruffo, Bethany Hirst, Ruby Hirst, Chloe McFarlane, Ellie Gillow and Amber Towns. 3
4 WARNING Make sure that you check the expiry date on over the tongue pastes, or for that matter, any other medication you purchase from a store. A horse had a reaction at Trials from using an out of date paste from a recently purchased product. Did you know... The oldest recorded horse, Old Billy (presumably not his name in his earlier years) died at the age of 62 years in 1822 in Lancashire in the UK. He worked as a barge horse until his late 30 s. Donkeys generally live to a greater age compared with horses, with one donkey, Alice, at the Good Samaritan Donkey Sanctuary at Clarence Town, NSW passing away at 56 years of age. Thoroughbreds usually age more rapidly once they reach 20 years of age, as they suffer weight loss at an earlier age before similarly aged ponies, miniatures and genetically good doers of any breed. There is no definite threshold for entering old age in horses, as it can vary between individual horses and even breeds of horses. Unfortunately, organ and genetic diseases, such as Cushing s Disease, affecting up to 16% of aged horses, as well as grey horses with melanomas, which have an incidence of up to 40% of grey horses, especially Arabians, can end their lifespan prematurely. Health records indicate that up to 33% of aged horses decline in health and condition due to dental problems. They often die prematurely because of inability to graze or chew their food, or secondary septicaemia from infected teeth or gums. 5 Handy Hints Use of Honey on Wounds Although a multitude of skin wound creams, sprays and antibacterial powders are available to soothe and minimise surface infection, honey is a cheap and highly effective antibacterial and healing preparation when applied to wounds on the body and lower limbs. It contains antibacterial compounds (glucose oxidase) and dries the wound to reduce bacterial and fungal growth. It helps to protect wounds, debride scabs and stimulate collagen tissue to close the wound. Mixing 5 parts honey with 1 part 10% PVP iodine solution (Betadine or Vetadine ), improves the antibacterial and fungal/yeast control and makes the honey bitter to the taste. Tasmanian Leatherwood honey has the highest natural antibacterial content, followed by New Zealand Manuka honey. The honey and iodine mix can be applied under a bandage initially to keep the wound edges in apposition so that they can heal across, and to the open wound once it forms a strong healing line and a protective scab. It should be applied twice daily, carefully removing Courtesy Dr. John Konke TPRC Rides Jess Pyke Alice Hirst Emma Cowling Emily Hirst Bethany Hirst Ruby Hirst Bridie Goodluck Amy Millar Evie Millar Juliette Sherrard Bronte Sherrard Grace Jones Sophie Cashion Amber Towns Alex Towns Liv Whatley Sophie Cibik Laura Johnstone Michaela van Rooye Isabel Gibson Amelia Youngman Chelsea Baker Ellie Gillow Madeleine Pearn Jayde Walters Charlotte Youngman Jenna Waterworth Amber Richards-Allan Isabella Gibbins Zoe Gillow Millie King Hannah Scott Emily Ruffo Melissa Chugg Jackie Harvey Sarah Lockett Emma Kolodjashnij Emily Van Galen Kelsey Lawrence Laura Chalmersa Bailey Elias Georgie Elias Jade Ruffo Emily Kilby Chloe McFarlane Alice Chalmers Maya Scott Brooke Hanham 5

Uniform Don t forget our uniform requirements. All riders must in the first instance, purchase the full pony club uniform ie gold jumper, white shirt and gold tie. Even our youngest riders need to have this uniform as they need it when they sit their D test at age 7 and for club presentation at camp. The rugby jumper and active riding top are optional extras only. Reminder Just a little reminder to members regarding the end of the pony club day. Each rally a committee member is nominated to stay behind and close all the gates. Sometimes families are a little slow to get going, which means the person who is shutting the gate has to wait. If you look like being the last few, please be mindful of this person and don t be too much longer. Wet Weather Policy Rallies will NOT be cancelled in the morning unless there is an electrical storm. Parents should not ring to find out if the rally will go ahead, but if you decide you are not going to attend due to the wet weather, please let Kylee know ASAP. The rally may be cancelled during the day if necessary. In the case of an electrical storm, the DC and CC will confer. If the rally is cancelled everyone will be notified by text by 9am which means the rally start time may need to be delayed. REMINDER A reminder that there is to be NO smoking or dogs on the Pony Club grounds at ALL times. We want to be setting a good example for our riders, so if you must light up, please leave the grounds. Also pick up any rubbish and either place it in a bin or take it with you. 6
