MAY 2017 FROM THE PRESIDENT By: Tom Daniels, President The Cedar River Bowmen annual banquet, would anyone like to guess what we had for weather? Did all of you say Rain!! Yes, Rain has put a damper on a lot of our club activities this year and has become rather annoying. Despite the weather 6 kids braved the rain and hunted their way through the forest, to gather up 400 eggs that were hidden along the trails of C course. Then when a Cedar River Bowmen child showed up just a little late, all of the kids that had their bags full dumped them out and shared equally with their fellow Club kid. Good news, the weather forecast for our next shoot is low 70 s. So let s all get working on that farmers tan. May 20 and 21. SHOOT the FIELD: For those who do not know what a field shoot consists of, we will have some information contained within this newsletter as well as at the shoot. So please come out and expand your archery horizons. All yardages will be marked. 42 targets on Saturday and 28 targets on Sunday. Listed below are some basics of Field Archery. BOWNANZA: We are proud to host a variety of large archery events each year, including our signature event the last weekend of each July. Our annual Bownanza tournament is a threeday extravaganza with thousands of dollars worth of door prizes, raffles and money dots. We also have a variety of other shooting events including smoker and night shoots. Bownanza is considered to be the premiere 3D tournament by many in the Pacific Northwest. It is also your chance to serve your club by either VOLUNTEERING TO HELP in any way possible or DONATING TO OUR RAFFLE TABLE. Last year we had a number of club members bring items to the Raffle Table. My hope is that you will find a way to support this huge event in one way or another.
Please call Tom Daniels , or feel free to talk to any board member, we all would be glad to assist. THANKS. GATES: Last but not least. PLEASE shut the club gate when you leave. The CLUB gate is the second gate that you open when entering the property (YELLOW). When you are done enjoying the club for the day, please take a quick drive through the club parking lot, and take a look around. If you find that you are the last person on the property, please make sure that the Club gate is locked. As per our LEASE Agreement we are required to have all gates locked when we are not present on the property. Please help keep us stay compliant with our LEASE Agreement, by assuring that both gates are locked when you leave. Thanks in advance Tom Daniels Lost A SIG SAUER rangefinder, model KILO 2000, was lost somewhere on A or C course. If found please contact Dave Ingham at BOARD MEETING REMINDER The e Board meeting will be held at 6:00 PM on e 8th at the CRB Clubhouse. All CRB members are welcome! Come see how you can contribute to your club! Guest comments and feedback are welcome. SUMMER OUTDOOR ARCHERY Tuesdays at the Range 6:00pm Meet and Form Groups Shooting Begins Shortly Thereafter Summer league started on Tuesday, May 16th. Shooting starts around 6 at the flat range. On cloudy days try to start your group a bit early to assure enough light to do the whole course. The Course to shoot and rules will be posted at the flat range for that days shooting. BROADHEADS: broadheads are not to be used on any course. Only shoot broadheads at the sand pits on the flat range. Special Hunt Permits By Jim Walker Deadline to apply for special hunt permits is May 24! Planning an Event at the Club? If you are planning any type of event at the Club such as Birthday Party, Family Reunion, Anniversary, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Holiday Weekend Event, Family Camp Over/Out, etc. with non members involved you must contact the Board for approval prior to the event. Thank you.
CRB 2017 Work Party Dates Please mark your calendars as Your Club can really use your help! e 10th July, 15th and 22 nd ust 5 th September 30th Work parties start at 9:00 am and last until about 1:00 pm. Lunch is provided after the work party. Club Member Arrow Safety By Jim Walker Arrow safety is something allot of us take for granted. However, it is something that should be a top priority for each of us. To properly inspect our arrows we need to inspect each arrow for damage prior to every shot. Proper care of carbon arrows can ensure years of quality performance. However, shafts can be damaged. To inspect an arrow, grasp it on both ends and flex it away from yourself and others while visually and audibly checking for splinters, cracks, or nicks. Rotate and repeat this process four or five times around the entire circumference of the shaft. Also, inspect the nock for damage or cracks as well as the area of the carbon shaft in which the nock is positioned as this is a common area where cracking occurs. If you find an arrow to be damaged in any way, discard it immediately. SHOOTING DAMAGED CARBON ARROWS CAN RESULT IN ARROW FAILURE, DAMAGE TO BOW, AND POSSIBLE INJURY TO YOURSELF OR OTHERS AROUND YOU! Please do your part by inspecting your arrows. Attention ALL Club Members, We Need Your Help! We need your help at our work parties and tournaments. The work is not hard, but it does take time and we need people to help out. For the work parties; just show up. As far as the tournaments go; we typically set up on the Friday before the shoot, starting at 9 AM. Please help us out and volunteer! Thank you. Pets Let's not forget! Pets are the responsibility of their owners. Owners must clean up after their pets by removal of deposits and pets shall be under the direct control of their owner while on Club property. Thanks. Cook Shack Help Needed! Concessions are a key part of our tournaments and helps with shooter turn out. Anyone interested in helping out in the "Cook Shack" at any of the upcoming tournaments, please contact Jennifer or Travis Gahan as your help is needed. ANY AND ALL HELP WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED! You could be hit with an arrow from an archer who doesn't know you are there. Never point your bow in an upward position while drawing... it may accidentally fire and leave the range. Children: At ALL times while at the Club; your children are your responsibility. They must be accompanied by an adult and are not allowed to run free. Standing Rules Sec 14: Children; Parents/Guardians are responsible for the supervision of their children at ALL times while at the Club.
Broadhead Tuning By Jim Walker (From Easton's Tuning Guide) In general terms, broadhead tuning is done by first shooting a group of arrows with field points into the target, and then by shooting a group of arrows with broadheads. The two groups are compared and the appropriate adjustments are made. CAUTION: Never shoot unfletched shafts with broadheads flight is extremely erratic and dangerous! The field points should be as close in weight as possible to the weight of the broadheads. Because it is necessary to first establish a good group with field points, broadhead tuning can be done only after acceptable tuning has been established with field points. Shoot a Group with Field Points (If Shooting At CRB; Carpet Bales On The Flat Range May Be Used. Field Tips Only): Using a set of fieldtipped arrows that have been tuned with your bow, shoot a group of 3 or 4 arrows into the target at 30 yards. Take care to shoot as good a group as you are capable. Shoot a group with Broadheads: (If Shooting At CRB; Broadhead Sand Pits Are The Only Area Braodheads Are Allowed) Using identical arrows tipped with broadheads, shoot a group of 3 or 4 arrows into your 30 yard target (Broadhead Sand Pits Only). Use the same aiming spot that was used for the field points. The shot group is the key. If you are content you have shot a respectable group based on your ability, and then compare the position of the two groups. Make the adjustments listed below to your setup and shoot both groups again. Keep adjusting and shooting until both groups (field points and broadheads) group in the same area. Adjustments: Adjustments sometimes affect more than is expected. It is best to always make the up/down adjustments first. Once the two groups are on the same horizontal plane, and then make the left/right adjustments. 1. If the broadheads grouped above the field points, move the nocking point up. 2. If the broadheads group below the field points, move the nocking point down. 3. If the broadheads group to the left, they are behaving as if the shaft is too stiff (for a right handed archer). Any, or several, of the following can be done to correct the point of impact. Increase the poundage on the bow. Change to heavier broadheads. If you are using a cushion plunger, decrease the spring tension. Move the arrow rest or cushion plunger in toward the bow. Make adjustments 1/32" at a time 4. If the broadheads group to the right, they are behaving as if the shaft is too weak. Any or several of the following can be done to correct the point of impact. Decrease the poundage on the bow. Change to lighter broadheads. If you are using a cushion plunger, increase the spring tension. Move the arrow rest or cushion plunger out away from the bow. Make adjustments 1/32" at a time. Remember, broadhead tuning can only be accomplished after the bow has been properly setup and tuned with field or target points.
NO BROADHEADS ALLOWED ON COURSES OR FLAT RANGE! As we start a new season at the Range; all members please be advised, that broadheads are NOT ALLOWED anywhere on the range except at the broadhead sand pits. The following are the Standing Rules. Standing Rules: Sec 4: Use of Practice Butts (Flat Range) c. No broad heads or blunts are allowed on the practice butts (Flat Range). Sec 6: Use of Animal Target Range c. No broad heads or blunts are allowed on the courses. Sec 7: Use of Field Target Range The same rules prevail on the field courses as on the animal courses. No Hunting on Club Property Just a reminder; there is no hunting allowed on Club property. Blank Bale Practice: Backing Up The Perfect Shot. By Pat Moore I believe one of the most effective tools to improve an archer s accuracy is probably one of the least often employed. That s right I m talking about shooting at a blank bale. What the heck is blank bale practicing you may ask, well read on and I will do my best to explain the virtues of the activity. Hopefully you ll be convinced to incorporate it into your practice routine. I suspect you ll find it to be a delicious read. I m sure you know already that consistently doing the same thing on every shot is the basic recipe for accuracy. FEBRUARY In other words 2017 if you do the exact same thing on every shot you re more likely to see the same results for each shot. On this, I m convinced we would agree, Right? So, unfortunately most archers think that the measure of a good practice is trying to hit the bullseye. The problem with this approach is that hitting the bullseye is the result not the method. You need to focus on your method of executing the shot (the part that is to be repeated). The human brain can t affectively concentrate on more than one thing at a time. So if you are concentrating on hitting the bullseye you can t possibly be doing a good job of thinking about your shot execution. Your focus becomes the target and not all the steps that go into a good shot. Let s use the analogy of a muffin recipe. Say you want to bake a delicious muffin. While you are making it you are thinking only about how mouth watering a perfect muffin is. You pay little attention to how many eggs you dump in the bowl or how much baking soda, sugar or salt goes in there. You whip it up and throw it in the oven all the while concentrating on the thought of a perfect muffin. As you may have guessed your muffins will probably suck! You won t have improved your muffin making skills in the least. So you try again this time you think even harder about your perfect muffin and this time they might turn out OK. But since you weren t thinking about how you did it there is no way you ll be able to make another one like it. Then you make batch after batch of muffins without paying attention to the recipe your
efforts yield totally inconsistent results. The worst possible outcome is that you start to think you just aren t a good muffin maker. Perhaps you should start to concentrate on executing the recipe. Focusing on the recipe will enable you to achieve your perfect muffin. Only then will you be able to adjust the recipe to consistently make a perfect muffin. The same truth exists in archery when you practice if you want to make a perfect bullseye; you need to concentrate on the recipe and not the bullseye. Here is where the blank bale is important. Pull up a bale at about 5 yards so you know you won t miss it. Now, yank off the target. Begin shooting and focusing on the recipe of the shot, Is my arm aligned properly, do I have both eyes open, is my shoulder in proper alignment is my hand position correct, am I squeezing the trigger or relaxing my fingers, will I have a good follow through That s right focusing on the recipe! Focus on the way you are shooting and not the where you are shooting. You see, if your goal is doing the exact same thing every time, which we have already identified as being the route to perfection, then why shouldn t that be your focus when you practice? Eventually mixing the recipe will become second nature and make the aiming process that much easier. To be an affective archer your shot sequence has to come from your subconscious and totally consistent. It needs to become like breathing. Every time you pull the bow back it just happens the exact same way every time. You can shorten the learning curve substantially if you are focused on doing the exact same thing every time during your practice time and not totally focused on where the arrow goes. You need to learn how to prepare the perfect shot in order to get a perfect shot. Of course we all know the perfect shot is the tastiest shot of all! Club Gates When opening the first gate (Community Gate) to the Range make sure to use the hand line and walk the gate to the stop as allowing it to FREE WHEEL will cause damage to this gate as it is very heavy. This gate needs to be kept closed and locked at all times by all members entering or leaving the Range. The second gate (Club gate) may be left open while the Range is in use. When leaving the Club it is your responsibility to make sure the Club gate is closed and locked behind you!!! Thanks. Membership Cards Please remember to have your membership card with you, or at least in your vehicle. There have been some incidences where nonmembers have been let in, or have borrowed keys, and are not with a club member. So please be aware of who is at your CLUB. Ask for membership cards if you are unsure, and please introduce yourself.
Swiss and Mushroom BBQ Burger Directions Preheat the grill to mediumhigh heat. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over mediumhigh heat. Once hot, add the shallot and mushrooms; sauté until softened and browned, 4 to 5 minutes. Stir in the BBQ sauce and stir, while cooking for 1 to 2 minutes more. Mushroom Topping: Burgers: 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 shallot, finely chopped 1 pound button mushrooms, sliced 1/2 cup BBQ Sauce 2 1/2 pounds ground beef 1/4 red onion, finely chopped 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped Dash Worcestershire sauce Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper 6 slices Swiss cheese 6 hamburger buns, toasted In a large mixing bowl, break up the meat with your hands. Add the chopped onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and salt and pepper. Mix until thoroughly incorporated. Divide the meat into 6 equal balls. Flatten them into patties and use your thumb to create an indent in the center of each burger. Grill the burgers, uncovered, for 4 minutes on the first side. Flip and continue cooking for another 4 minutes for medium. Remove the burger from the grill, place in buns, and immediately top with the Swiss cheese and the hot BBQ mushrooms. Cook's Note The indent in the burger will prevent the burgers from puffing up while you grill them. Lost Arrows? Have you lost arrows at the Club? As we collect lost arrows, we will put them in a bucket by the Registration Booth. If you want to retrieve your arrows; check out the arrow bucket. Please come and pick them up. At the end of the year if they are still here, the Board will decide what to do with them. Thanks.
Membership News May 2017 By Mike Stefanick Clubhouse Door The lock on the club house has been replaced and it might give some a bit of grief. I have run into two keys that did not work with the new lock. If your key doesn t work let me know and I ll exchange it for one that does. Summer League By the time you read this, Summer League shooting will have commenced. We are shooting every Tuesday evening leaving from the Flat Range about 6:15 or so. Come join us. I ll post a schedule this week, the intention is to rotate through the courses A to D, but if we have a shoot at the end of the week, we ll shoot a course that will correspond to the shoot. So, since we have Shoot the Field over the weekend, we ll start our rotation with B course, shooting a partial field round. In order that we have enough time, we will only shoot two arrows per target. For the unmarked courses, A and C, there will be two red ribbons posted for the shooting position. For the marked yardage courses, B and D, shoot the furthest two stakes. Scoring will be 5 (center and x), 4 next ring out and 3 next ring out on the field and hunter targets. On the burlap unmarked targets the 3 will be any body part. I will have score cards on the table at the Flat Range. This is a great way to meet and be social with other club members, as well as, begin getting yourself ready for hunting season. Hope you can make it.
