2 A STUDY IN INCOMPETENCE By: Pat Moore Let me start this story by stating that I am a Bowhunter Education Instructor, I am also a Wa Hunter Ed instructor and as such it is my job not only to instruct on proper behavior for new hunters but also to set that example through my own behavior. I pride myself in hunting ethically and by the rules of the land. I typically harbor a significant amount of vitriol for those that intentionally break the game laws and steal from the honest hard working hunters. Now as you may have already guessed this story describes some rather unpleasant events that I am completely responsible for and they happened to me this past fall. I share this experience despite my reservations and embarrassment so that others may benefit and learn how an individual may deal with those times when your actions or decisions result in a situation that is less than ideal. It was a warm early fall morning. I was hunting an area I had been seeing elk regularly. In this particular area the regulations state that you can shoot a cow or a 3 point bull or better. This constitutes likely 90% of the elk roaming the woods. I was tip toeing through an area that was relatively flat and open but had a sharp drop off along the ridge. I glimpsed some movement off to my right and I quickly recognized the fork of an antler as the elk moved below the edge of the plateau. Now a forked top often indicates a branch antlered Elk so I readied myself as the elk continued up the hill towards me. I dropped down to one knee in an effort to partially conceal my profile as a human. There was one of those Alder or maple trees that had 5 or 6 trunks all growing vertically from the same stump. It represented a significant visual screen but I could see the elk moving up the hill as scattered glimpses of brown and antler. As the elk stepped from behind that tree\jungle I clearly saw a dagger point protruding from both antler bases. I was at full draw and there he stood basically broad side at 15 or 16 yards but staring directly at me. As I released the arrow he whirled and the arrow caught him squarely in the neck angling back toward the chest cavity and I could see the shaft was buried up to about 6 inches from the fletch. It certainly wasn t an ideal shot but I thought there was a chance that the broad head may have made it to the chest cavity. After sitting down and having a snack and killing 45 min I started to follow the blood trail. Initially the trail was rather sparse but with a bit of diligence I could follow it. The first 60 yards probably took me over an hour to traverse but the further I went the more blood I would see. This is usually a good sign more blood later on the trail often indicates a mortal wound. After about 150 yards I could tell the elk was stopping and looking for a place to lay down because every ten feet or so I would see a pool of blood 10 or 15 inches in diameter. This went on for another 30 yards so it was a lot of blood. I was certain he was laying down right there somewhere. The trail seemed to stop and this is almost always when the animal back tracks to lay down. There was a small tangle of bushes off to my right so as I turned to give it a good look the bull busted from that cover and ran straight towards our camp. After I recovered from my surprise that the bull was still alive I decided to sit and wait another 30 min. After starting on the trail again I noticed that the blood was still rather easy to follow I thought gee that s lucky he ran towards camp I won t have to pack it as far. Within another 30 yards I spied the bull sprawled out on the trail up ahead he was clearly dead. As I walked up on my first elk ever with excitement and elation my heart sunk. That fork that I was certain was on his right antler had mysteriously vanished. Holy cow how the hell did I shoot an illegal elk? I sat there in disbelief for what seemed like forever. It was one of the most crushing depressing times I can ever remember experiencing. Now I had to decide what to do. It is at this time I ask what would you do? I could try and sneak the meet back to camp it was only about 200 yards to the tent. I could pull my arrow and simply walk away. I could have done any number of things. What would you do? This is what I did, I pulled my tag from my pack and filled it out. I then proceeded to tag the elk and gut it. I was not going to let this beautiful animal go to waste. I had sat in dozens of Hunter Education Classes where the fish and wildlife officers had said regardless of the outcome of your infraction it will be a lot better on you if you just admit your mistake and take your medicine rather than try to sneak away an illegal animal. Off to camp where I found my hunting partner hanging out waiting for me. I explained that we needed to go call the WDFW and explain the problem. The first gal I talked to I explained who I was that I was a hunter Ed instructor and then what had happened. She put me in touch with a conservation officer who I also explained all of the above and he asked if we could still save the meat. I explained that I had gutted it and prepared it tagged it and then called him as quickly as I could. He thanked me profusely for making that call. He took my license plate number and vehicle description and told me to pack it out and get it to the local meat packer where he would alert them to the incoming meat and to prepare it for a local homeless shelter. If I did that he wasn t going to write a ticket on it. That seemed like a win win for everyone. I ended up having to pay... (continued on next page)

3 A STUDY IN INCOMPETENCE, CONTINUED $ for the processing fee which I thought was a bit steep but I certainly wasn t going to complain. Now, there will be times in your life when you do things that may not meet your own expectations. They may be embarrassing or painful. Of course we hope that those poor decisions don t result in an injury or death of your fellow man and that there is something you can do to make up for your poor decisions. In my case there really was no excuse for me not double checking what I thought was a legal bull. I feel very fortunate that the officer that handle my report took pity on me and worked out an amicable solution that worked well for all involved. My thanks to the WDFW and their professionalism and their empathy. 4 2015 CRB BANQUET By: Tom Daniels, President Our annual CRB Banquet saw some great spring weather. We had approx. 75 people in attendance. Activities included an egg, giant bubbles and a Spring based target shoot. Kids ranging in ages from 2 to 12 picked up 270 hidden eggs in matter of minutes. They also enjoyed buckets of bubbles. The bubbles provided hours of enjoyment for the kids. Although I did recognize some of the bigger kids looked a lot like CRB board members. We also had a fun shoot that consisted of targets decorated with baskets, bunnies, flowers and butterflies. Points scored were random and winners received a CRB t-shirt. Winners were Al Gertsch with a high score of 90 in the men s division and Heather Walling had a score of 70 for the high score in the female division. We then enjoyed a potluck dinner with chicken being provided and grilled by the club. At the banquet, Tom thanked last year s board for their service and welcomed the new 2015 board. He also talked about highlights for the upcoming year. A few awards were announced course captain of the year, which is voted on at Bownanza, was awarded to Al Gertsch and his crew. The inspirational award is traditionally passed on by the previous year s recipient. This year s inspirational award was passed from Clint Collins to Diane and Tom Daniels. We also had a 50/50 raffle which saw Kary Lemon winning $89.00! Way to go, Kary! Thanks to all who helped make this event a success. We shared lots of food, fun and comradery. Great fun was had by all.
