3 SEASON NOTES: Vasquez Continues Hot Streak: After a strong preseason in which he finished third in the league in assists per game, Greivis Vasquez opened the 2012 regular season with a stellar performance dishing out a career-high 13 assists in the season opener vs. San Antonio. Counting the preseason, this makes the third straight game that Vasquez has recorded double-digit assists (10 at MIA 10/26; 11 vs. HOU 10/24). Vasquez recorded double-digit assists in just six games during the campaign. Robin Lopez helped out on the assist front as well, as he tied his career-high with three assists against the Spurs. Davis Arrives in Fashion: Rookie Anthony Davis may have exceeded expectations in his NBA regular season debut. The number one pick in the 2012 NBA Draft scored 21 points while adding seven rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot to the stat sheet. 4 Dealin Dell Only one player remains from the roster that Monty Williams and Dell Demps inherited two years ago prior to the season. Jason Smith is the only current Hornet that was on the opening night roster for the season. Since then, the Hornets have said goodbye to 32 different players. Also, the Hornets have conducted 15 trades since the hiring of General Manager Dell Demps. The Hornets Reach Adulthood The season marks the 25 th anniversary of the Hornets franchise. The Hornets began play during the season in Charlotte, North Carolina, one of four expansion franchises granted that season. After fourteen seasons in Charlotte, the Hornets relocated to New Orleans prior to the season. The franchise had just started unpacking in their new home when Hurricane Katrina forced the Hornets to temporarily relocate to Oklahoma City in 2005 for the next two seasons. The Bees would return to the Big Easy for the season and recorded a franchise-best 56 wins en route to the franchise s first-ever division title. In the 25 year history of the franchise, the Hornets have compiled a (.486) record. The franchise has made 12 playoff appearances and compiled a (.417) record in the NBA playoffs. The Hornets first playoff appearance came in 1993 under head coach Allan Bristow. The Hornets finished during the season and advanced to the second round of the playoffs, falling in 5 games to the New York Knicks. Individual Player Talking Points Al-Farouq Aminu Averaged career highs in points (6.0), rebounds (4.7) and field goal percentage (41.1%) in his sophomore season Averaged 9.6 points, 6.8 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.0 blocks over the last 10 games of the season and led the team and steals and blocks over that span. Was one of three Hornets to play in all 66 games last season while leading the team in offensive rebounds with 95. Recorded his first two career double-doubles in and led the team in rebounding 10 times. Ryan Anderson NBA Most Improved Player. Led the NBA in three-pointers made last season (166) with the Magic. Finished 6th in the league last season in total offensive rebounds (224), 7th in free throw percentage (87.7%) and 4th in turnover percentage (6.4%). Set career marks in points (16.1) and rebounds (7.7) last season. Anthony Davis Was the youngest member of Team USA Men s Basketball (19 years old) since NBA players began participating in 1992 and as such was the youngest gold medal winner in that span. Became the fifth player to win the National Championship and be selected #1 in the same year. Three of the previous four players (James Worthy, Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) are in the Hall of Fame. Only Davis and Jabbar also were named AP player of the year that same season. Won six of the seven major National Player of the Year awards last season at Kentucky in his freshman season. Led the nation in blocks with 4.65 per game and shot 62.3% from the field while also leading his team in scoring (14.2) and rebounding (10.4). His 186 blocked shots broke school, SEC and NCAA freshman records for most in a season. Eric Gordon Team was 6-3 when Gordon played last season. Gordon scored the game-winning points on two of those nine occasions. Averaged a team-leading 20.6 points, as well as 3.4 assists, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.4 steals while shooting 45.0% from the field and leading the team in scoring in eight of his nine appearances and in assists three times. In five of the nine games, he scored 20+ points and surpassed 30 points once. Has averaged over 16 points in each of his four NBA seasons and holds a career average of 18.2 points per game. In his career at Kentucky, set the record for games played (152) and ranks 10th on UK s all-time three-point field goals list with 175. Played for the U.S. at the 2011 World University Games in China. Was also selected to the USA U-19 National Team in the summer of 2009, playing in all nine games and helping the team to the gold medal. Austin Rivers Averages 15.5 points for Duke as a freshman, becoming only the third player to lead Duke in scoring in his first season. Was the seventh freshman in ACC history to collect First Team All-Conference recognition. Ranks in the top five in the Duke freshman record books in seven different categories (points, points per game, free throws, free throw attempts, three pointers, double-figure scoring games and 20-point games) Played in the 2011 McDonalds All-American game, leading the West squad with 14 points. Brian Roberts Competed in the 2012 NBA Summer League for the Hornets, averaging 13.8 points, 2.2 assists and 2.0 rebounds over five games (three starts). He also shot 50% from the field, 54.5% from three-point range and 93.8% from the free throw line. Won the German League National Championship with Brose Baskets Bamberg last season, averaging 11.4 points, 3.0 assists and 2.0 rebounds in 25.9 minutes.
