You ve got to admit it s getting better: The Pelicans offense truly is getting better all the time. After averaging 94.1 points per game last season and shooting 44.8% from the field during the regular season, New Orleans has shown dramatic improvement through six preseason games. The birds are averaging points per game and shooting an improved 46.2% from the field (including an astounding 41.8% from beyond the arc). Sophomore big man, Anthony Davis leads the entire league in preseason scoring with 132 points. Birds of a feather, flock together: The Pelicans strength in the preseason has been their scoring depth. The Pelicans have seven different players averaging double figures through the first six games played: Davis: 22.0 Gordon: 18.5 Anderson: 13.8 Morrow: 12.3 Holiday: 12.2 Roberts: 11.6 Taking flight: In his first appearance of the preseason, Eric Gordon showed his versatile skill set in an efficient scoring showcase. He accomplished the feat with outside shooting 6-9 FG, 2-3 3PT FG (.667) as well as getting inside and getting to the free throw line where he went 7-8 from the line (.875). Sophomore Encore?: After a solid rookie season, it seems the former number one overall pick may have big things in store this year. Thus far in the preseason, Anthony Davis has gone on scoring onslaught, he is averaging 22.0 ppg and has made a combined FG (.538). Additionally, he has been getting to the free throw line at will and has shot from the line (.889) once he gets there. Road Warrios: The Pelicans are 4-0 on the road this preseason but only have a combined victory margin of +10 in those four games (+1 at HOU, +2 at DAL, +4 at ORL, +3 at OKC). Anthony Davis poured in 21 points and was active on the defensive end with two steals and two blocks. Austin Rivers notched 21 points (including getting to the free throw line 13 times) and dropped five dimes. The duo s chemistry was even on display as Rivers fed Davis for a highlight reel alley-oop in the third quarter.

4 Destined for Greatness: Anthony Davis rookie season was one to remember, as his season averages lumps him in a group with some of the greatest big men to ever play the game. Davis became just the fifth rookie in NBA history to record averages of at least 13.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 1.5 blocks, 1.0 steals and 1.0 assists per game. Davis also became the youngest player in the history of the NBA to record these statistical averages in a season. Also, AD joins Dwight Howard and Josh Smith as one of three players to record these averages this season. Below is a comparison of the five players who previously reached these plateaus in their initial NBA campaign. Anthony Davis ( ): 13.5 ppg, 8.2 rpg, 1.8 bpg, 1.2 spg, 1.0 apg, 51.6% FG Chris Webber ( ): 17.5 ppg, 9.1 rpg, 2.2 bpg, 1.2 spg, 3.6 apg, 55.2% FG David Robinson ( ): 24.3 ppg, 12.0 rpg, 3.9 bpg, 1.7 spg, 2.0 apg, 53.1% FG Patrick Ewing ( ): 20.0 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 2.1 bpg, 1.1 spg, 2.0 apg, 47.4% FG Hakeem Olajuwon ( ): 20.6 ppg, 11.9 rpg, 2.7 bpg, 1.2 spg, 1.4 apg, 53.8% FG A sign of things to come?: In reference to his wildly popular tumblr page, The Chief Has Arrived, forward Al-Farouq Aminu was lookin good, lookin good, lookin good in his final performance of the year 4/17 at DAL. Aminu finished the game with 16 points and a career-high 20 rebounds. Below are some notables about Chief s dominant rebounding performance. Farouq s performance marks the first time in franchise history a player grabbed at least 20 rebounds in a game since March 9, 2009, when David West grabbed 20 rebounds in a loss at the Atlanta Hawks. Additionally, Farouq set an individual franchise record for most rebounds in a quarter when he grabbed 14 boards in the first quarter against the Mavs (previously was 13 by Kurt Rambis, 2/18/89 vs. IND). Aminu also tied the franchise record for most rebounds in a half with 17 in the first half (tied Tyson Chandler, 1/16/08 vs. SEA). Behind Farouq, New Orleans set a team season-high with 58 rebounds against the Mavericks. This marks the first time since January 1, 2012, that the team has grabbed 58 or more rebounds in a game (60 at SAC, L 80-96). With a +21 rebounding advantage in the game, it marked the largest rebounding advantage for the team in a game since January 22, 2011, when the New Orleans recorded a +25 rebounding advantage over the San Antonio in a win. Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall! : Anthony Davis powered through the rookie wall in a fashion that would have even made Ronald Reagan blush. A look at his splits before and after the All Star break show that AD got stronger as his Rookie season moved along: Pre All Star: 12.5 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 44.2% FG, 9 double-doubles Post All Star: 15.3 ppg, 9.3 rpg, 52.0% FG, 11 double-doubles Monster from the Midway: With his 20 point, 18 rebound performance against Memphis on 3/9, Chicago native Anthony Davis is the first player since Blake Griffin during the season to turn in multiple 20+ point, 15+ rebound performance during a rookie campaign. JRUE DAT?: On 1/24, fourth-year guard Jrue Holiday was named to his first ever All-Star Game. He had 6 points (3-6 FGs), 2 rebounds, an assist and 2 steals in 15 minutes of play in his All-Star debut. Here are a few reasons why Holiday was deserving of the selection: Averaged team-highs of 17.7 points and 8.0 assists and was the only player in the league to average at least 17.0 points and 8.0 assists. Joined Wilt Chamberlain ( ) as the only players in Sixers franchise history to average at least 17.0 points and 8.0 assists in a single season. Ranked tied for 20th in the NBA in scoring and fourth in assists also ranked 18th in steals (1.58 spg) and tied for 11th in minutes played (37.5 mpg). Mr. Versatility: Ryan Anderson provided quite the spark coming off the New Orleans bench 59 times and starting 22 times in 81 games played last season. Ryno was nothing short of an ironman as well, as he finished second on the team in minutes and played in 64 straight games to open the season prior to missing his first game with a viral infection on 3/12 at BKN. Anderson led the team in overall points (1309 on the season) and 3 point field goals made (213), while ranking third on the team in rebounds (519). Anderson s point field goals made ranked 2 nd in the entire NBA for the season. Anderson was a model of consistency off the bench, leading the reserves in scoring in 17 straight games from 1/15 at PHI to 2/19 vs. CHI and in 45 of his last 52 contests overall in the reserve role. Ryan poured in 20+ points 23 times last season and had 11 double-doubles on the season, while his three 30+ point performances last year were the first time a New Orleans player recorded multiple thirty point performances in a season since David West did it in (he had point performances that year). With his 5-7 performance from beyond the arc on 3/31, Anderson made 5+ three point field goals in a game 12 times last year. Anderson had a stellar performance against the Lakers 12/5, totaling 31 points, nine rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot. He was 5-8 (.625) from distance. The 31 points marked his second 30-plus point performance of the season. The former Cal Bear put up his best performance of the season 11/23 at PHX, scoring a career-high 34 points while tying his career-high with eight three-point field goals made. Anderson also grabbed 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Chasing History: Ryan Anderson finished the season second place on the franchise s all-time list of three-point field goals made in a single season. Anderson moved past Glen Rice, and ranks behind just Peja Stojakovic for most three-point field goals made in a season. Here s a comparison of the three seasons : Peja Stojakovic, (.440) : Ryan Anderson, (.382) : Glen Rice, (.470) Reke Havoc: In his 65 appearances with the Sacramento Kings in , new Pelican Tyreke Evans had the most efficient season of his four year career. He reached several impressive plateaus and marks for efficiency: Including a season-high 29 point performance against PHI on 2/1/13, Evans poured in 20+ points in 21 games last season. Evans shot 47.8% from the field last season which is considerably higher than his career average of 44.9%. Similarly, Evans shot 33.8% from the three-point line last year, which is the first time he s shot at a higher clip than 30.0% in his entire career.

5 Rare Rookie: With 17 points, 15 rebounds and four blocked shots 3/4 vs. ORL, Anthony Davis joined a rare group of rookie big men in NBA history. Anthony is just the 11 th rookie in the history of the NBA to reach those plateaus in a single game. At 19 years and 358 days of age, Anthony became the second youngest player in the history of the NBA to record those numbers in a single game (Dwight Howard, 19 years & 86 days). Anthony is just the fifth player to ever record those numbers in the history of the franchise. Alonzo Mourning accomplished the feat nine times during his career with the team, including once during his rookie season as well. Anthony is also just one of eight NBA players to record those numbers in a game last season. Of the 10 previous rookies that have accomplished this feat, eight of them went on to appear in multiple NBA All-Star games. Three of them (Tim Duncan, Shaquille O Neal, Yao Ming) are likely to be Hall-of-Fame members once they become eligible for the ballot. Calling in for backup: The New Orleans bench was quite impressive in the month of February, and more specifically following the All-Star break. The reserves outscored the opponents bench by a total of 100 points in the month of February for an average of 7.7 bench points per game advantage. In the six games after the All- Star break, the backups outscored their competition by 8.5 points per game. The bench recorded more points than the opponent bench in 10 of 13 contests in the month of February. The bench had a 20 point advantage over their counterparts in three contests during February. o 2/11 at DET: New Orleans reserves outgained the Pistons reserves o 2/20 at CLE: New Orleans reserves outgained the Cavaliers reserves o 2/24 vs. SAC: New Orleans reserves outgained the Kings reserves Three s Company: With the win over the Houston on 1/9 New Orleans: Snapped a three-game losing streak against the Rockets that included two losses in the season series. Recorded their first three-game winning streak since April of That streak extended from April of Won three straight against Southwest Division opponents in consecutive games for the first time since joining the division. Beat all three Texas teams consecutively for the first time in franchise history (DAL, SAS, HOU). Strike while the Iron s hot: In the five games from 12/7 12/14 New Orleans rookie Austin Rivers posted numbers significantly above his season averages. The rookie tallied 14.0 points per game on an astounding 49.1% shooting from the field to go along with 2.4 assists and 2.4 rebounds per contest. In the loss on 12/14 vs. MIN, Rivers recorded a new career high 27 points (5-6 3PT FG) marking the first 20+ point performance of his career. While Rivers numbers may have dropped in the New Orleans L at POR on 12/16, he nailed a three-point basket with 50.9 seconds remaining to tie the game at 92 after the New Orleans trailed by as many as 16 points in the second half and the game had not been tied since 0-0. Impact Rookie: Forward Anthony Davis recorded his first double-double as a pro with 23 points and 11 rebounds on 11/9 vs. Charlotte. This makes him only the third rookie in franchise history to have a double-double in one of his first three performances as a pro (Alonzo Mourning 15 points, 14 rebounds 11/17/92 vs. DAL, Larry Johnson 16 points, 18 rebounds 11/2/91 vs. NJN). Davis Arrives in Fashion: Then rookie Anthony Davis may have exceeded even the loftiest of expectations in his NBA regular season debut. The number one pick in the 2012 NBA Draft scored 21 points while adding seven rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot to the stat sheet. In comparison, below shows how other recent number one picks have fared in their first game in the NBA.
