19 Attendance Policy Students are required to participate and attend physical education unless medically excluded by a physician. Alternative physical education projects can be assigned in lieu of gymnasium activities when warranted. Daily excuses may be accepted if the student has a written note from nurse or parent, any long time excuses need to be from a physician. Students are expected to makeup physical education classes with projects or attending make up classes. Any students arriving late and are unable to change will be required to makeup class. Instructional - All students will engage in physical education for 42 minutes every other school day. Students are required to wear proper gym attire. Students must safely engage in physical education, the teacher has the responsibility to protect others against unreasonable physical or mental harm. The teacher is educated, experienced and skilled in the area. This enables the professional to predict most situations that may be harmful. The following points can help the teacher plan meaningful and safe instruction: 1. guides and lesson plans are utilized 2. The age and maturity level of the students are taken into account 3. Students are taught coeducationally but may be divided in certain circumstances 4. Do not force participation or use physical education as a punishment 5. Eliminate high risk activities 6. All students should be dressed in proper attire to ensure safety. The wearing of jewelry is strongly discouraged 7. All accidents are reported promptly and students are directed to the nurse 8. First aid supplies are accessible and an emergency care plan is in place Title ix Policy Statement: The Mount Vernon School system, in compliance with Title ix of the Educational Amendment of 1972, affirms that no student shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination in physical education programs. With the above policy in effect, A.B. Davis Middle and Longfellow Middle School will adhere to the following guidelines: 1. Physical education classes shall be scheduled and taught on a coeducational basis when deemed appropriate. 2. Separation of classes by gender is permitted when classes are involved in contact sports. A contact sport is defined when the rules do not eliminate the probability of bodily contact. 3. Criteria used for measuring student progress in physical education shall be the same for both sexes to assure a fair and equitable grade based on individuality.
