The History of Hockey in Kamloops In 1894, Alexander Mclean, Flooded a rough area of land on the banks of the Thompson River, It was used by hockey players and pleasure skaters alike. The first built-in skating rink, with surrounding boards, was built on site of the present day Riverside Park in 1899 by local boat builder Earnest Fletcher. Hockey sticks were a frequent sale item in Kamloops with prices ranging from 25 cents to 90 cents each. After World War 1, the Kamloops Hockey Club joined forces with the Junior Brotherhood and the Skating Club to operate an ice rink and organized a junior and senior league. In 1926, the first indoor hockey arena for Kamloops was built. The new arena boasted dressing rooms, a heating system and a much appreciated hot dog and snack counter. Space and scheduling had to be juggled around the annual fall fair, the bull sale, lacrosse and other community groups. After 1940, the arena was completely shut down after it was declared unsafe for public use. The outdoor rink was put back into use with a new club house, boards, improved lighting and better facilities for spectators. On February 17 th, 1945 the Kamloops and District Memorial Recreational Centre society was formed with over a dozen community and service clubs involved to raise funds and oversee the building of an indoor ice arena to be made as a civic memorial to those people from the district that fought in the wars. On May 24 th and 25 th, 1949 the arena opened with a parade, baseball tournament, professional wrestling, a carnival, two dances and raffle for automobiles. The new arena was officially dedicated as Memorial Arena on Remembrance Day, November 11 th, In 1945 the Kamloops Minor Hockey League was started and ten years later our Kamloops Team won the BC title and the Cromie Memorial Trophy. In 1959 the Kamloops Bantams won the interior title and in 1968 they held their first international tournament known as KIBIHT. Kamloops was overwhelmed with 108 applications with 32 teams being selected from Europe, USA and Canada. As registration in Minor Hockey grew, a Parents Auxiliary to Kamloops Minor Hockey was formed in Their purpose was to raise funds from the arena concession to keep costs down. More ice time was needed which increased registration costs and in 1966 the McArthur Island Sports Centre was built marked another important development in local hockey history as being the year that Joe Tennant came to Kamloops and began coaching the Junior A Kamloops Rockets. In 1971 Tennant led the Rockets to the top of the BC Junior A Championships. Ten years later, coaching the Merritt Centennials, he won his second junior A title. After Tennant coached Kamloops Midget Hockey for two years, going to consecutive BC Championships. In the hockey season the Knights of Columbus Pee Wee Rep hockey team went to a tournament in Prince George and performed a feat that got them published into the Guinness Book of World Records. The boys scored 7 goals in 2 minutes and 22 seconds. They also gained provincial recognition by winning the BC Pee Wee title. By the time the 80 s hit, the Kamloops Minor Hockey Association was well experienced with a sizeable executive as well directors for each minor hockey division. The newest division was the female hockey league. In the 1980 s Kamloops was named the Tournament Capital of British Columbia (now the Tournament Capital of Canada) and hockey, along with all other sports, will always live up to that title. Kamloops Minor Hockey was names association of the year for 1982/83 and the 2004/05 by the BCAHA. We now have over 1300 registered players and host 25 tournaments per season. This article includes information taken from the Kamloops Museum Archives and Linda Groenesteyn (1990 Parents Auxiliary to KMHA Historian)

About KMHA s Programs INITIATION PROGRAM: This program is designed for beginners ranging in age from four to six years of age. The emphasis is on enjoyment and skill acquisition. The objectives are to have fun, stimulate interest in hockey and desire to continue participation, develop basic hockey skills, obtain a sense of achievement, promote physical fitness, introduce players to the concepts of cooperation, sportsmanship, leadership, encourage initiative, and prepare players for further participation in Kamloops Minor Hockey Programs. NOVICE PROGRAM: This program is designed for players under 8 years of age. The emphasis is on fun and skill development. A scoreboard is used but there are no league standings. The objectives are to introduce a team environment, to further the concepts of cooperation, sportsmanship, leadership skills and to prepare players for future participation in Kamloops minor hockey programs. RECREATION PROGRAMS: Recreational hockey is the type of hockey played by the majority of amateur players. It s FUN HOCKEY for fitness, relaxation, and fellowship. Since this is where the masses of Hockey Canada participate, the Recreational program is of prime importance. The expansion of Recreational hockey is seen as an important means of prolonging the average playing career. Recreational hockey is central to the entire amateur hockey structure. Many of the players coming out of the Novice program will go into the Recreational program. Furthermore, most competitive players spend time as Recreational players, both before and after their competitive days. Since House league play comes near to our meaning of Recreational hockey, it must have balanced teams and be free from the pressures normally associated with Representative and, to a lesser degree, Select Teams.

The KMHA Recreation or House program encompasses Atom, Peewee, Bantam and Midget divisions. The majority of players play Recreational hockey. The objectives of the KMHA Recreational/ House league are: To promote a game that fits the needs of its participants To be open to all male or female players To allow players equal ice time To emphasize the importance of having fun while improving skills De-emphasize the importance of winning To allow enjoyable participation To assist in individual s physical development To create a pleasant social environment Allow an individual to participate freely in other sports and activities Give alternative types of hockey. Ages of players as of December 31 st, of each year : Atom 9 & 10 years Peewee 11 & 12 years Bantam 13 & 14 years Midget 15, 16, 17 & 18 years The end of the Season is celebrated with a Night of Champions where on this night the Atom, Peewee, Bantam and Midget Recreation divisions play their final Championship games. ATOM DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM: Atom Development is an advanced level of Atom hockey (ie yr olds). Players have to try out at this level, by doing evaluations in both skills and game formats. The total number of players in our Atom division will determine the number of Development teams that we are required to have in a given season.

REPRESENTATIVE REP PROGRAM: The intent of the KMHA Rep program is to allow the maximum number of players to play at the highest level of competition available to them and to establish and maintain rep team opportunities for higher level, sustained competition for those players demonstrating above average levels of skill, ability and attitude. The object being to create the player and team development necessary to meet the challenges of the highest level of competition. KMHA has Rep teams in Peewee through Midget divisions. Registration permitting, there may be up to four (4) classifications of Rep teams per rep division. Rep teams will play league games in the Okanagan Mainline Amateur Hockey Association (OMAHA) and as such are committed to the rules of that association. If successful through league playoffs, the Rep teams can qualify for Provincial Finals in Peewee through Midget Rep divisions. FEMALE HOCKEY PROGRAM: Whenever possible the KMHA guidelines will also apply to female registrants. KMHA recognizes that adjustments to the guidelines may occasionally be required in support of encouraging females to play and in providing a top quality female program. The hockey program offered to girls registered with KMHA may vary each year depending on the following factors: the actual number of female registrants within each division; the specific request of each registrant regarding their placement on either a co-ed team or a female only team; the skill level of each registrant. FEMALE REP PROGRAM: Registration permitting, KMHA will form female Rep teams that will play league games in the Okanagan Mainline Amateur Hockey Association (OMAHA) and as such are committed to the rules of that association. The female Rep player selection process is similar to that described in the KMHA Rep program and selection process.

Kamloops Minor Hockey s webpage is very popular with kids of all ages! With a membership of over 1300 players and then considering all the coaching staffs, parents and officials involved with KMHA there is a tremendous opportunity to get your advertising message out to many people in our community. Visitors to the site check out KMHA, BC Hockey, Hockey Canada and other news and bulletins that are posted or linked on our site. They also get update on upcoming games and schedules and read about current highlights involving KMHA teams. There is much more information on our website that is being accessed by many people, including tips on nutrition, risk management information, details on coaching certification clinics and on the very popular annual KMHA Coaching Conference that has had the likes of Ken Hitchcock, Don Hay and Ryan Walter along with numerous others as key note speakers. It doesn t stop locally, however, as we host over 25 tournaments per year and so people from all over the province and even outside of it navigate through our web pages to plan accommodations, meals, entertainment and other stops of interest while visiting the Tournament Capital of Canada. Sponsorship has played a vital role in the development of KMHA programs. We are very grateful to all the sponsors involved with KMHA over the years. Sponsorship funds help to keep registration costs affordable so that more of our kids and teenagers ranging in ages 4 years to 18 years are able to participate and enjoy A Game for Life experience.
