It has a unique role - the conservation of Britain's native farm animals. Funds for its work come from donations, membership subscriptions and corporate sponsorship. This sale is for pure-bred registered animals of breeds on the Trust's Watchlist, and for their cross-bred progeny. 3 ity for the errors of description or omissions in the Sale catalogue. 91. Cattle and Sheep will be sold subject to these Special Conditions of Sale. Where these conditions are silent Cattle Sheep & Pigs will be sold under the Conditions of Sale approved by the Livestock Auctioneers' Market Committee. Copies of which will be displayed around the market or may be viewed at the Accounts Office. 92. The Show and Sale Committee may appoint, at their discretion, an arbitrator acting under the Arbitration Act for the time being in force in order to resolve any dispute. 93. n each case the person having the reference shall have full power to include in his award provisions for costs and expenses including the keep and transport of the animal. 94. Without the prejudice to the discretion of any person making an award as aforesaid the purchaser shall be responsible for the cost of returning the animal to the saleyard or elsewhere at the Auctioneers' discretion and the vendor shall pay reasonable lairage until collection of the lot. 186 GENERAL INFORMATION Location: The York Livestock Centre is situated just off the A64 York By-Pass at the intersection of the Hull. Bridlington roundabout. Car Parking: Free Refreshments: The Livestock Centre facilities will be available including the cafe and bar. Accounts: The accounts office is situated in the main market hall. Buyers numbers will operate at this sale and all prospective buyers should obtain a number from the accounts office before they make any purchases. The same number should be used for all purchases throughout the market. Conditions of Sale: All stock are sold subject to the Special Conditions of Sale, as printed in this catalogue. Cattle and Sheep will be sold subject to the Conditions of Sale for Breeding Cattle and Sheep as approved by the Livestock Auctioneers Market Committee and the National Farmers Union of England and Wales. A copy of these conditions will be displayed in the sale ring. Pigs will be sold subject to the market conditions of sale. All stock will be sold in catalogue order. Prize money will only be paid to stock that has been sold. All breeds of MV Accredited sheep will be sold in Ring number 1 at the start of the sale. Arrival of stock: All Cattle must be accompanied by the correct documentation. All cattle must arrive with a CTS Passport and a York Livestock Cattle Movement Document. Accredited Sheep must be accompanied by the Certificate of Maedi Visna Status which must be handed to the stewards before the sheep are unloaded. All sheep must be tagged in accordance with the current DEFRA legislation and accompanied by a completed AML1 licence, which must be handed to the stewards before unloading. All pigs must be tagged in accordance with the current DEFRA legislation and accompanied by a completed AML2 licence and handed into the stewards before unloading. Holding Number: The holding number is 48/140/8000 Clearance of Stock: All Exhibitors and Purchasers must remove their stock from the market by 7 p.m. on Saturday. NO stock may be left in the market overnight due to the current DEFRA regulations. No animal may leave the market without first being checked by the Stewards or market staff. Passouts are required before any stock is removed from the sale 3 premises.

4 All invoices and passouts must be handed to the stewards or market staff before stock is removed from the market pens. Settlement: Settlement in full for all stock purchased is due immediately at the close for the sale. Movement Permits for pigs will be issued during the Sale by Trading Standards. The Licensing Office will close at 4.00pm on the day of the sale. Sheep Movement Permits will be issued by the auctioneers. Pigs and sheep may not be moved from the market without first obtaining a Movement Licence. Pig & Sheep purchasers MUST have a Holding Number which is required for the movement licence. Pedigrees: It is the responsibility of the Vendor to pass all documents relating to the registration or transfer of pedigree etc. to either the auctioneers or to the Purchasers at the time of sale and to pay any transfer or registration fees that may be required. The auctioneers will forward all documents received to the respective Purchasers as soon as possible after the Sale but they or members of the show and sale committee will accept no liability for the registration or transfer of such pedigrees by the relevant breed societies. Hotel Accommodation: A list of hotels in the York area is available on request. Transport: Transport to and from York can be arranged if required. A number of local haulage firms will be present on the day of the Sale. Reserves: All reserve prices on stock must be handed to the auctioneers, in writing, at least half an hour before the commencement of the sale. Poultry: NO POULTRY WILL BE ACCEPTED ON FRIDAY 2nd OCTOBER. All poultry must be transported in suitable carrying boxes. All poultry must be penned before 9.00am on Saturday. Poultry arriving after this time may be refused entry. All poultry must be checked by Stewards or market staff before it is removed from the cages. There is no Ministry requirement to segregate Salmonella tested birds from untested birds nor is there any guarantee given by the auctioneers as to the health status of any lot. All poultry will be sold in catalogue order. The auctioneers take no responsibility for the information given by vendors as to the health status of their birds. ear numbers or tattoos and documents of their purchases before they remove from the sale premises. 84. Any purchaser inadvertently removing an animal other than that purchased will be responsible for the full cost of the return of the animal to its rightful owner and such return must be made within 72 hours of notification of the mistaken delivery to the Auctioneers. 85. All purchases shall be paid for on the day of the sale direct to the Auctioneers before the removal and no lot is to be removed without the written authority of the Auctioneers. No lot will be allowed from the sale premises until the sale has finished in that section. 86. Cheques will NOT be accepted unless prior arrangements with the Auctioneers have been made. Where a purchaser defaults in payment the Auctioneers reserve the right to re-sell the lot and to charge the purchaser with any expenses and loss incurred by reason of the failure of the purchaser to complete his purchase. The Auctioneers reserve the right to charge interest at 3% over the HSBC Bank Base Rate on any outstanding accounts from the day of the sale unless special prior arrangements have been made with the Auctioneer in this respect. 87. There will be no payment to vendors on the day of the of the sale. Payment will be forwarded by cheque or BACS within 7 days of the sale. 88. Breed Society levies and Transfer Fees where appropriate will be deducted from Vendors' accounts. 89. Any disputes over warranties, pedigrees, catalogue descriptions or the transfer of registration or matters not dealt with specifically in this schedule will be settled by the Auctioneers in conjunction with the Sale Committee in accordance with the rules of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust or the relevant Breed Society or the Auctioneers Conditions of Sale. 90. The Auctioneers or the Sale Committee accept no liabil

5 notified in WRITING at least SEVEN days before the day of the sale. Substitutes must be of the same breed, sex and age as the original entry. No Substitutes will be allowed on the day of the sale. 75. The Auctioneers shall for all purposes be deemed to sell as agents for a disclosed principle. 76. All Rare and Minority breed stock will be sold in guineas (105 pence) and a commission of 5 pence in the guinea will be charged by the Auctioneers on all sales. Crossbred Stock and Poultry will be sold in pounds per lot. Commission of 10% will be charged on Poultry and 5% commission will be charged on Crossbred Stock. 77. There will be no "upset" price on any stock sold. Vendors shall have the right to fix a reserve price for any or all of their entries. Such reserve prices MUST BE NOTIFIED TO THE AUCTIONEERS in writing on the day of the sale at least 30 MINUTES before the commencement of the sale. Reserve prices cannot be accepted on any of the entry forms. 78. Half commission on the reserve price may be charged on unsold lots at the discretion of the Auctioneers or the Sale Committee. 79. Animals which fail to reach the reserve price fixed by the vendor may be sold by private treaty after the auction. Full commission will be charged on all such transactions which must pass through the Auctioneers. 80. No animal may be sold privately prior to the sale but must be passed through the sale ring. 81. Every vendor or authorised representative, is responsible for presenting his or her own stock to the sale ring at the correct time. Any animal not presented for sale in the correct order may be sold at the end of the sale. 82. Vendors may not bid directly or indirectly or through any agent other than the Auctioneers for any of their own animals. 83. Cross bred stock must be entered on the "Cross bred" entry form. All cross bred stock will be sold at the end of each section. Only cross bred stock that has one registered Rare or Minority Breed Parent, from the list on page 15, can be accepted for sale. Cross bred stock is not eligible for show. GENERAL 69. It is the responsibility of the Vendor to pass all documents relating to the registration or transfer of Pedigrees, and Passports including any other documentation required by DEFRA to either the Auctioneers or to the Purchasers at the time of sale and to pay any transfer or registration fees that may be required. 70. The Auctioneers will forward all documents received to the respective Purchasers as soon as possible after the sale. The Auctioneers or their staff or members of the Show and Sale Committee will accept no liability for the registration or transfer of any pedigrees to the relevant breed societies. 71. At the discretion of the judge or judges concerned any prize or prize money may be withheld if, in their opinion the exhibit or exhibits concerned is or are of insufficient merit. 72. Exhibitors will be responsible for the care of their stock and for any damage or loss caused to or by their animals whilst on the sale premises. At least one person must be in charge of stock at all times. 73. In the event of any alterations or additions to the catalogue particulars being necessary the Exhibitor must furnish full details of such alteration or addition to the Auctioneers before the commencement of the sale. Any statement made from the rostrum indicating such alteration or amendment shall take precedence over the catalogue particulars. 74. Substitute stock will be allowed if the Auctioneers are 183

All birds must arrive before 9.00 am on the morning of the sale and be transported in suitable carrying boxes. Poultry can not be accepted before the day of sale. Poultry Judging will commence at 10.00am on the morning of the sale. 62. Definition of Entries. PAIRS -1 Male and 1 Female TRIOS -1 Male and 2 Females Only pairs and trios as above will be accepted for sale. PIGS 63. Pigs must be accompanied with a Movement Permit (AML2) which is to be handed to the Stewards before the pigs are unloaded. This form can be obtained from your Local Trading Standards Office. The sale and movement of pigs will be subject to DEFRA guidelines and movement restrictions in force at time of the sale. Pigs will be sold subject to the Livestock Association conditions of sale. A full copy will be displayed in the accounts office on the day of the sale. 64. All pigs MUST be tagged in accordance with the current DEFRA regulations, tattoos will not be accepted. 65. All weaners entered for sale must be at least 10 weeks old and will be sold in suitable lots. 66. Sows and litters will not be accepted for sale 67. Movement Permits for pigs will be issued during the sale. The Trading Standards Licensing Office will close at 4.00pm on the day of the sale. Cattle arriving without Passports or signed Cattle Movement Documents will not be allowed in to the market premises. Cattle Movement Documents will be sent with the confirmation of your entry. 53. All calves must be registered with the Cattle Movement Service and have a valid passport. Calves can no longer be sold with a temporary passport. All calves must be over 7 days old when sold. 54. All cattle must be double tagged in accordance with the current DEFRA regulations regarding primary and secondary ear tags. POULTRY 54. The Sale Committee reserve the right to reject from the sale any birds which are deformed or unhealthy. They also reserve the right to limit or refuse entries should the number exceed the accommodation available. 55. All poultry and waterfowl must conform to breed standards where applicable. 56. All breeds of poultry and waterfowl are acceptable. 57. There will be a prize for the best in show pen of poultry and the best in show pen of waterfowl. 58. All domestic breeds of poultry and waterfowl will be eligible for the best of breed. 59. The legislation relating to the Poultry Breeding Flocks and Hatcheries (Registration and Testing) Order will NOT apply at this sale. All legislation relating to the sale and transport of live poultry will apply as usual. Further information regarding the Registration and Testing of laying flocks can be obtained from the regional DEFRA 181

Any purchaser wishing to register a complaint should notify the Sales Office as soon as possible within the time limits above. 45. Facilities will be available for sheep in the DEFRA Maedi Visna Accredited Scheme. Entry forms should be marked clearly if the sheep are Maedi Visna accredited. MV Accredited Sheep will only be accepted into the market premises if they are accompanied by the necessary movement permits. 46. All sheep must conform to the current legislation on tail docking. 47. All sheep (except Down Breeds) must be presented in a normal untrimmed fleece. Sheep which have been 'backed down' will be considered to be faked, unless exempted by special conditions of the appropriate breed society. 48. The sale committee reserve the right to split sheep classes with 8 or more entries. 49. The Yorkshire Livestock Auctioneers Association operate compulsory dipping for all sheep sales in Yorkshire from August until December. All sheep entered for this sale must have been dipped at least once within the previous 28 days or injected or treated with an approved product for sheep scab within the previous 14 days according to the manufacturer s instructions. A signed declaration must accompany the sheep to the sale. CATTLE 50. All bulls over 10 months of age must have been ringed and with the exception of yearling bulls shall if required by the stewards be led with a leading stick. 51. Exhibitors of Shetland sheep should indicate on the entry forms the colour of their sheep. 39. A fleece competition and also a Wool on the Hoof competition may be held on Friday 2rd October. Entries will be taken on the day and there will be a charge of 1.00 to enter. Classes include:- White Mooritt/Fawn Black/Grey Katmoget/Part. Colour Entries for the Wool on the Hoof competition are limited to sheep which are being entered for Show & Sale or Sale SHEEP & GOATS GENERAL 40. From the 1st January 2006 all sheep and goats will need to be identified with an origin mark (UK and the flockmark) and a unique individual number e.g. UK All sheep and goats must be accompanied by AML1 form, which is obtainable from your Local Trading Standards Office. 41. Lambs born on or after the 11 th January 2008 must have 2 ear tags. 42. Animals that are not correctly tagged according to the current legislation or arrive without form AML1 will not be allowed into the market. Up to date information regarding all sheep and goat movements can be obtained from the DEFRA website All ewes and ewe lambs within a breed class by a single Exhibitor will be grouped into suitable lots which will be at the discretion of the auctioneers and these groupings will be strictly enforced. 44. Exhibitors of sheep warrant their entries to be sound in 179

11 dor. Animals failing any aspect of inspection shall be removed from the premises or placed in isolation, and take no further part in the sale. TRANSPORT 29. All stock must be transported and handled in a manner consistent with the latest Animal Welfare Regulations and the DEFRA Code of Practice for the Handling of Animals. 30. The Steward may refuse to release to a Purchaser any stock if the steward considers that the proposed transport does not meet the requirements of the DEFRA Code of Practice. SHEEP HEBRIDEAN SOCIETY SHOW & SALE 31. All HEBRIDEAN sheep will be card graded 32. Any crossbred sheep entered in the above sale must be white in colour. 33. The Hebridean Sheep Society will award special rosettes for the Champion Male and Champion Female in this section of the show. 34. The two Hebridean champions may compete for the Primitive Interbreed Championship of the Rare Breed Show. All prospective buyers should register at the Accounts Office before they make any purchasers. ALL PURCHASERS MUST PROVIDE A HOLDING NUMBER WHERE THE STOCK IS BEING MOVED TO. 12 Rare Breed Show & Sale. Notes for Purchasers Visitors to the market must not enter or leave the animal area unless they are free from visible signs of contamination. Robust footwear, capable of being cleansed and disinfected must be worn in the animal areas. All vehicles MUST be disinfected at the lorry wash before you load any stock. Sheep & Pig purchasers must provide the holding number where the stock is going to. Trading Standards will issue pig licences to all purchasers on the day of the sale which must be obtained before the stock is loaded on to your vehicle. The auctioneers will issue Sheep Movement documents to all purchasers on the day of the sale which must be obtained before the stock is loaded on to your vehicle. Under the current DEFRA movement regulations Bulls & Rams purchased for breeding may be moved to an approved isolation area on a holding without triggering the 20 day standstill rule on the remainder of the holding. Details of approved isolation areas can be obtained from your local DEFRA State Veterinary Service office. However approval must be given prior to the bulls or rams arriving on that holding. Purchasers must also send a declaration to their local Authority to say that the animals are for breeding. All other cattle, sheep, pigs & goats purchased at the sale will trigger the 20 day standstill on the holding they are moved to. ALL STOCK MUST BE REMOVED FROM THE MARKET PREMESIS BY 7:00 p.m. ON THE DAY OF SALE. Up to date information regarding the movement of animals and copies of all the latest leaflets can be obtained either via the National Helpline or from the DEFRA website at BREED SOCIETY NOTES Wensleydale Sheep Potential purchasers of Wensleydale sheep are advised to contact the Honorary Secretary of the Breed Society Dr L Clouder, All animals will be numbered on arrival at the sale premises and must remain numbered throughout the sale. All stock will be numbered and penned and sold in catalogue order, unless any alteration is authorised by the Auctioneers. VETERINARY CONTROLS 25. All stock will be inspected on arrival by an Inspection Panel appointed by the Show & Sale Committee and all owners or their appointed representatives must be present at the time their stock is being inspected. The Inspection Panel will reject from the Show & Sale any animal that is found to be suffering from any infectious or contagious disease, condition or disorder (warbles, ringworm, warts, mange, lice, scurf etc.) or is showing any sign of unusual external excretions. Any animal so rejected shall immediately be placed in isolation, will not be permitted to take part in the Show & Sale and must be transported back to the premises of origin at the expense of the Exhibitor. 26. The committee reserves the right to reject any animal which it considers to be in poor condition or of a low standard of conformation or not of breed standard. In the event of a dispute with the decision of the inspection Panel on the grounds of health, a Veterinary Surgeon will be called to arbitrate on the deposit of which will be refundable if the stock is declared to be free of defects. INSPECTION 27. One or more representatives of the Trust may be in attendance. They shall have the power to inspect all animals and may reject any animal which in their opinion is ineligible, or which does not conform to breed standards, or for veterinary health reasons after consultation with a veterinary surgeon. 28. If the inspectors reject a lot they shall complete a REJECT card and inform the auctioneer and the ven

13 18. All prize winners from shows held in conjunction with the York Rare Breed Show and Sale will be eligible to go forward to the Interbreed Championship. 19. Cash prizes will be paid by the Auctioneers as soon as possible after the Show and Sale. The Auctioneers reserve the right to withhold prize monies for animals that are not sold. ARRIVAL OF STOCK 20. All stock entered for the show and sale must be accompanied by any licences or movement documentation that may be required by DEFRA at the time of the sale. This documentation MUST be handed to the stewards or government officials present BEFORE the animals are unloaded. Any animals arriving without the correct documentation will be refused entry into the market. 21. Under the current DEFRA Animal Gatherings Order NO STOCK can be unloaded before 12:00 noon on Friday afternoon. The auctioneers ask for the co-operation of all vendors to ensure they arrive promptly so that unloading and inspections can take place immediately after the 12:00 noon deadline. All stock for the Show must be delivered to the sale premises before 2:00pm on Friday afternoon. Any Show stock arriving after the stewards have completed their inspection may at the discretion of the Show and Sale Committee be refused entry to the show. Stock for Sale Only will be accepted after 2:00pm on Friday but must arrive BEFORE 9:00am on Saturday. Judging will commence at 2:00pm on Friday 2rd October. 22. All stock will be examined on arrival by Support Group inspectors who will have the right to reject any animals that do not conform to Breed Standards or which in their opinion are sub standard or otherwise ineligible subject to Clause Exhibitors must provide their own fodder, feeding stuffs, drinking utensils and grooming equipment. Leicester Longwool Sheep Breeder's Association Registrar: Davina Stanhope, or davinastanhope@aol.co.uk. The Leicester Longwool was derived from the Dishley Leicester developed by Bakewell in the late 18th century. It is a large docile, dual purpose, polled sheep with white legs and face. Ewes are milky and long living. Lambs from pure breed flocks can be finished in 12 to 14 weeks. It is used mainly for the production of heavy weight lamb. 15 7. Entry Fees. The scale of entry fees for each species is clearly indicated on page 15 of this schedule. Fees MUST be submitted at the time of entry otherwise entries may be refused.
