2 RETINAL IMAGE/CLASSIFICATION SCHEDULE All market steers, commercial beef heifers, market lambs, commercial meat goat does and market goats MUST BE retinal imaged and classified (market lambs, commercial meat goat does and market goats are ONLY retinal imaged, not classified) to show at the 2017 Mississippi State Fair and 2018 District and Dixie National Junior Round-Up Livestock Shows during the week of September 12-15, See the locations and times below. Make your exhibitors aware of these locations and dates so they can make plans to get their animals retinal imaged and classified. Tuesday, September 12: Verona 8:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, September 12: Senatobia 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 13: Greenwood 8:00 A.M. to 12:00 Noon Thursday, September 14: Raymond 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. Friday, September 15: Hattiesburg 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. For commercial beef heifers and commercial meat goat does not processed in September but are entered by December 1, there will be two opportunities to classify heifers and retinal image both sets of livestock. Tuesday, December 12: Pittsboro (Calhoun Co. Fairgrounds) 8:00 A.M. to 12:00 Noon Wednesday, December 13: Raymond (Hinds CC Facility) 8:00 A.M. to 12:00 Noon REGISTERING ALL 4-H LIVESTOCK VOLUNTEER LEADERS All 4-H livestock volunteers must be registered and complete the nomination process outlined by the State 4-H Office. If you have questions about the volunteer registration process, contact the State 4-H Office. Be sure to take care of registering these individuals in a respectful manner and complete this task before the show. In addition, make sure that new volunteers complete the livestock quality assurance program. REMINDER: 4-H/FFA MEMBERS MUST BE ETHICS CERTIFIED TO SHOW LIVESTOCK!! The Mississippi State Fair will be here soon and the Mississippi Livestock Quality Assurance training for NEW exhibitors, parents/guardians and volunteers must be completed by September 1, Youth going from a junior (age 8-13) to a senior (age 14-18) will need to be recertified as a senior. The training video is linked on the 4-H Livestock website ( The video is meant to give you as an Extension Agent or FFA Advisor the tools to conduct this training yourself, not simply to play the video. Once ethics certification has been completed, you should have the exhibitor(s) and family members who went through the training to each complete a Code of Conduct Agreement: 4-H/FFA Livestock Exhibitors (F1152) that can be accessed online as a PDF ( and printed for your records. Be sure to assign each person an ethics number that is written on each form. OFFICIAL HEALTH CERTIFICATE REMINDER An Official Health Certificate with each animal identified will be required on all livestock showing at the 2017 Mississippi State Fair. This includes all market animals, beef breeding cattle, commercial beef heifers, dairy cattle (purebred and commercial dairy heifers), dairy goats and commercial meat goat does. 2
3 MISSISSIPPI STATE FAIR PREMIUM BOOKS Each county will receive 2 Mississippi State Fair Premium Books in the county packet as soon as they are available. A PDF file of the premium book will also be sent by and posted on the 4-H Livestock website ( Please make sure your exhibitors and parents have a copy of the rules for the shows in which they participate. A copy of the schedule of events is included in this newsletter. DAIRY SWEETHEART CONTESTS AND MEAT GOAT PRINCESS CONTEST A Junior and Senior Dairy Cattle Sweetheart, a Junior and Senior Dairy Goat Sweetheart, and a Junior and Senior Meat Goat Princess will be selected during the Mississippi State Fair. Winners will be selected based on poise, beauty, personality and knowledge of their project. The top 3 of each division will receive awards. Rules and regulations concerning the contest are found in the Mississippi State Fair catalog. Please have the entries to our office by September 22, Encourage your girls enrolled in dairy and goat projects to enter this year. Winners will be announced according to times listed in the 2017 Mississippi State Fair Premium Book. COMMERCIAL HEIFER AND MARKET STEER EXHIBITORS SPECIAL NOTICE! Check with your 4-H/FFA exhibitors that are exhibiting steers and commercial beef and dairy heifers about horns. All commercial heifers and steers showing at the Mississippi State Fair and District and Dixie National Junior Round-Up Livestock Shows must be polled or dehorned with no scurs or re-growth to exceed 1½ inches above the skin line. The minimum weight on commercial heifers is 500 pounds for the Mississippi State Fair. MARKET GOAT EXHIBITORS SPECIAL NOTICE! Check with your 4-H/FFA exhibitors who are exhibiting market goats about horns. Goats may be shown that are polled, dehorned, or disbudded with no re-growth to exceed 1½ above the skin line. Removal of horns is not allowed on the show grounds. Remember the minimum weight of market goats is 40 pounds with no maximum weight for the Mississippi State Fair. COMMERCIAL MEAT GOAT DOE SHOW EXHIBITORS SPECIAL NOTICE! The minimum weight of meat goat does is 40 pounds with no maximum weight for the Mississippi State Fair. MARKET LAMB EXHIBITORS SPECIAL NOTICE! The minimum weight of market lambs is 70 pounds with no maximum weight for the Mississippi State Fair. Remember that lambs will be shown by weight and not by breed. MARKET HOG EXHIBITORS SPECIAL NOTICE! The minimum weight of market hogs is 200 pounds with no maximum weight for the Mississippi State Fair. COMMERCIAL DAIRY HEIFER EXHIBITORS SPECIAL NOTICE! The minimum weight of commercial dairy heifers is 200 pounds for the Mississippi State Fair. 3

9 2017 MISSISSIPPI 4-H HORSE CHAMPIONSHIP The 2017 Mississippi 4-H Horse Championship, including team demonstration, individual demonstration, public speaking, horse bowl, Hippology, horse judging, horse art and horse photography contests, was an outstanding event! The show ran extremely smooth and this is due to the fine work and cooperation of many, many people. We want to express our appreciation to all exhibitors, parents, volunteers, leaders, agents, and specialists for their excellent cooperation and interest in the 4-H horse program. We especially appreciate the Extension Agents/Program Associates and volunteers for working at the show and admire their dedication to seeing that the show is run in the best way possible. 20 2017 SOUTHERN REGIONAL 4-H HORSE CHAMPIONSHIP The 2017 Southern Regional 4-H Horse Championship was held in Perry, GA.
