Students enrolled between September 1 and October 31 of the 4-H year, the fee is $20. If enrollment is November 1st to August 31st, this fee is $25. Checks can be brought by the Extension office or paid to your club manager. Checks need to be made out to 4-H Adult Leaders, there is no fee for adults to enroll as members. 2

ETGRA Fall Sale The East Texas Goat Raisers Association invites all folks to participate in their Fall Sale on Saturday, September 17 th. We will start checking in animals at 7:30 a.m. until Noon. Animals will be sifted for obvious health problems prior to sale. Knots, other than those caused by recent injections, will exclude an animal from sale. The ETGRA acts as an agent only. Soundness of the animal as well as accuracy of information contained on the registration paper, application to register and service memo are the responsibility of the seller. Please see the sales rules at The sale will start at 1 p.m. This will be an open sale with folks with meat, dairy, and pet goats invited to participate. Our last sale was a success with buyers leaving with good stock at fair prices and sellers who were satisfied with the results of their transactions! 3

6 Fall Photo Contest All you photography buffs get your cameras out and get shooting! The Fall Photo contest is coming up fast. The deadline to get your photos in to the County is September 20th. You will need to submit your photos for judging to the County office the same way as in past years, but you will also need to submit a digital copy as well, to advance to the District Level of competition. There are three age divisions and all photographs must have been taken by the 4-H member between the dates of October1, 2010 and the time of entry. Photos may be submitted only one time in one category. Images must be JPEG/jpg format and must not exceed 1 MB. (If you need help with this contact Nick and he will help you with this). The categories are different this year, there will no longer be Color and Black & White Divisions. The categories are as follows: People Animals-Domestic Elements of Design Plant/Flora Digital Darkroom Night Photography Dominant Color Animals-Wildlife Marine/Aquatics Nature/Landscape Details & Macros Theme Food Catch All The category, Theme for this contest is: Enjoy the Ride! The Rules and Guidelines for the Photography Contest can be found online 4-H Website or check the Freestone County website for a link, as well as at our facebook page. Food & Nutrition Food Show and Food Challenge It s time again to get out your aprons and get ready for the 4-H Food Challenge and Food Show. Clubs, get your teams together and 4-H Seniors, you can compete in the Food Show. The County Food Show will be November 15th and the winners will advance to the District Competitions to be held on Thursday, December 8th at the Bell County Expo Center in Belton. The Food Challenge contest challenges teams of 4-H members to create a dish using only a predetermined number of ingredients. From these ingredients, team members must identify and prepare the dish, then make a presentation about it to the judges. The presentation will include information about the serving size, nutritional value, and cost of the dish. The 4-H Food Challenge allows 4-H members to demonstrate their culinary and food safety skills to judges and observers. The link to the 4-H Food Challenge manual and resources is: lifestyles/index healthy lifestyles.php The Food Show contest is open to Senior division 4-Her s only. Each participant must prepare a dish in one of the categories of Main Dish, Fruit & Vegetable, Bread & Cereal, or Nutritious Snacks. They must present a close-up photo (4 X6 ) of themselves with their dish, their prepared dish, serving utensil, and State Project Record Form (2 copies). During the competition they will have a 3 minute oral presentation and the judges will have 3 additional minutes to ask questions and 4 minutes to score. 8 Major Livestock Show Info Major Show Entry Night November 10, 2011 Time: TBA If you are interested in showing an animal at any of the Major Livestock Shows, plan to come to the Extension 440 E Main Street in Fairfield during entry night. The Livestock Shows that are included are: Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo, Houston Stock Show & Rodeo and Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo in Austin. Commercial Steers If you are interested in showing Commercial Steers at this year s major Livestock Shows, you will need to notify Nick at the Extension office by September 15th. Tag Orders Lamb, Goat & Swine tag order deadline is Friday, September 16th by 4:30 pm. Each tag is $8.00. Poultry Orders Needs to be in by October 10th. The cost will be $31.25 per pen of 25 birds. Number of pens as well as money will be due by 4:30 pm on Monday the 10th of October. National 4-H Week Validation Lamb, Goat & Swine Validation for the Major Shows will be during the last week of October. Watch your or facebook for specific date and time. October 3rd-8th is National 4-H Week, a time for 4-H members to bring attention to 4-H and share the great opportunities we have to offer. Join your club in showing your community how 4-H uses your head, heart, hands and health to benefit everyone we come in contact with. Watch for updates on the Freestone County 4-H Website and your local club for great opportunities to show off during this week of celebration. JOIN IN AND VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITE 4-H MEMBER DOODLE The 4-H Program is having doodle contest for 4-H members to try out their artistic skills. Log on to the 2011 Doodle Site and vote for your favorite 4-H Doodle! The winner will be highlighted on the 4-H website during the 2011 National 4-H Week. 9 Project Areas Horse Project Meeting Fairfield Civic Center or Fairgrounds Located at 839 East Commerce Monday, September 19th at 6 p.m. the Hoof Pints will have their first meeting of the year in a big way! Dr. Hemmes, an equine chiropractor, will be our special guest. The group will be discussing the anatomy of horses. Livestock Judging Livestock Judging practice will begin Tuesday, September 13th at 6 pm at the Extension Office located at 440 East Main Street in Fairfield. This group will practice weekly on Tuesday nights in preparation for upcoming competitions through November (unless notified otherwise). This project area is open to all 4-Her s and is lead by Nick Hoffman, CEA. You can reach Nick at the Extension Shooting Sports Archery Michael Strader & Leah Stansbury are the leaders of this project area. They meet twice a month from 10 am until 12 noon. To join this group, you will need to contact one of the leaders and give them your E- mail address and they will send you the month s meeting dates and location.
