2 Camps, Contests & Workshops Summer is just around the corner, and that means it s time to sign up for Southeast District 8 County Camp 2012! Camp will be held July 6-8 at the Lakeview Methodist Conference Center in Palestine. Camp is only for 4-H members age 8-13 with 4- Hers age serving as teen leaders. Thanks to the Johnson County 4-H Booster Club and Johnson County 4-H, campers and teen leaders will only pay 1/3 of the cost for camp. Camp will cost $36 for campers and teen leaders and $75 for adult chaperones. That includes your meals, lodging, a t-shirt and activities. The camp registration packet is available in the Extension Office or on the Johnson County webpage ( johnson.agrilife.org). All registration paperwork and fees are due to the Extension Office by May 24th. If you are a senior 4-H member and would like to serve as a Teen Leader, the Teen Leaders application is also available at the Extension Office or on the Johnson County webpage and are due May 24th. Teen leader training will be June 4 in Marlin. Recordbook Training Sessions Offered The Texas 4-H Recordbook process is all new this year- with a new website to input and print forms. Come learn all about the new website and exactly how to put your H Recordbook together. Two training opportunities are available. Please call the Extension office to let us know you are coming! Bring your own laptop. Training Dates April 23, 6:30 p.m., Extension Office May 7, 6:30 p.m., Extension Office The second annual 4-H Volunteer Conference is set for July 27-29, 2012 in San Antonio. Whether you have been a volunteer for one, 12 or 20 years, the conference offers something for everyone! Registration opens April 1st on 4-H CONNECT. 3 Horse News Coach Ed Bader reported the Senior team of Tylo Bader, Darylann Reed, Matthew Reed and Trevor Reed placed 7th at the Houston Livestock Show Horse Judging competition Where Tylo was the 5th high individual overall. On June 3-7, 2012, the Statewide Texas 4-H Equine Ambassador Leadership Program will be held in Gainesville, Texas at the Lone Oak Retreat, This event has been developed in order to encourage young people in 4-H to develop leadership skills and an understanding of the equine industry. The goal of the program is to enable these young people to develop abilities that will make them leaders in tomorrow s horse industry. Participation is open to all districts of the state. Participation is open to 4- H youth ages years of age with a genuine interest in the equine industry. The cost of the school will be $ per participant. This will include meals, lodging and all materials. Students will not be allowed to stay elsewhere. It is necessary that we have 4 chaperons, either in the form of Adult Leaders or County Extension Agents. Cost for an adult leader chaperon is $ each to attend. Registration will be through an online application process on 4-H Connect from April 1 through April 20. The maximum number of 4-H Equine ambassadors will be 30. Mark your calendars now for Sunday, April 15, 2:00pm at Joshua Baptist Church, 3231 S.W. Wilshire Blvd., Joshua. All newcomer s are welcome, along with previous year s project members. Call Ed at The deadline to validate your horse project for District & State contests is set for May 1, Horses not validated before this date will not be eligible to compete in the District contest, which will be held June in Belton. This year, horse validation will take place on 4-H Connect. (this is the same website you used to sign up for 4-H). You will log onto your family profile, then click Edit next to the name of one of the children on your profile. At the top of the screen, above the child s name, you will see the word Animals in blue. Select that, then add every horse you want to validate. You will also have to upload 3 pictures of each horse in JPG format of the front, right and left views. If your horse is registered, you will need to upload the registration papers. The fee is still $10 per horse, and each horse will appear under every child on that family profile. Each family validating a horse will need to print an invoice for each horse and provide the invoice(s) and check to the County Extension Office. They will prepare one consolidated Club/County check, and mail it to the Texas 4-H Foundation. If you need further instruction or help, please contact the Extension office and be prepared to bring copies of all required paper work to the office. Youth (14 or older) can also register to receive Youth Assistant Certification. 13th Annual Buckle Shoot Fandango & Whiz-Bang Qualifier, May 12 th & 13 th 2012 This year's Fandango will be a two day event held at the Fort Worth Trap and Skeet fields located on the west side of Fort Worth on Saturday May 12, and the Sporting Clays event will be held at Alpine Shooting Range on Sunday May 13. There will be American Skeet, Trap, Whiz-Bang Qualifier, and Sporting Clays. Deadline to enter is May There will be a limited number of shooters this year. Fees: Senior II, Senior I, Intermediate, and Junior Saturday: Skeet, Trap, & Whiz-Bang (50 targets each) - $ Novice Saturday: Skeet (25 targets), Trap (25 targets), & Whiz-Bang (30 targets) - $70.00 The Sunday Sporting clay event will be $50.00 for 100 targets (All Shooters). In the Heifer division Kevin Thomas, 3rd, Limousin; Sarah Sharp, 3rd, Santa Gertrudis; Chloe Bennett, 4th, Shorthorn; Bradley Pate, 5th, Limousin; Cody Thomas, 5th, Limousin, In the Barrow division Timothy Thompson, 2nd, Cross; Mikala Grady, 2nd, Cross; Ashton Fenn, 5th, Duroc; Cassidy Spoon, 9th, Duroc. In the Dairy Cattle division Jennifer Murphy, 3rd, Brown Swiss; Donna Dezendorf, 3rd, Jersey. In the Scramble Show Travis Tilton had the overall Reserve Champion steer, Champion European Cross steer and received honorable mention for his breed essay. JCLAA Membership Dinner/Drive Saturday, March Cleburne Civic Center Parents, grandparents--everyone is invited to come out and show your support of the JCLAA. This is the organization responsible for sponsoring the annual County Junior Livestock Show & Youth Fair. By becoming voting members, you can take part in planning and working to make the County Junior Livestock Show the best experience it can be! Cost is only $15 (membership dues and dinner) for each person, or $10 for meal only. Are you interested in swine projects and want to know more about the industry? This camp is a traveling bus tour starting in Perryton, TX on June 3 and ending in College Station on June 8, with visits at key industry locations along the way. This camp is open to all 4-H members who will be enrolled during the school year as high school juniors and seniors and this year s high school graduates. A $350 fee will be required for each participant, paid upon acceptance to participate. Deadline for applications is April 16 (Applications are available at the County Office).
