2 County Council/Adult Leader Meetings The 4-H Youth County Council meetings are open to 4-H members age 9 and older. Meetings provide opportunities for youth to meet, share ideas, plan, and implement activities with other youth throughout the county. Each club is encouraged to send 2 3 representatives to each meeting. Club representatives typically include the President and 1 2 Council Delegates. The next County Council Meeting will be Monday, February 22 at 6:30 pm at the Extension office. The Adult Leader Association meetings provide an opportunity for adult volunteers to meet, discuss ideas, and plan and implement activities that support the youth of the county. The next Adult Leader Meeting will be on Tuesday, March 29, at the Extension office at 7:15 pm. (Please note: County offices will be closed on the 28th, so the March meeting will be on Tuesday.) 3 Academic Eligibility.What does that mean? 4-H members are encouraged to Make the Best Better as they continue through the school year. Remember to give each assignment your best effort and to manage your time wisely. In accordance with the Texas Education Agency policy and House Bill 72, a student must be passing all courses in order to compete in extracurricular activities (including 4-H). For each competition, an academic eligibility form will be available from the 4-H office. Members will submit the form to their school s office for eligibility status/signature and return it to the 4-H office. County Fashion & Storyboard Contest The Clothing & Textiles project includes a wide variety of activities through which members may choose to learn about the selection, care, or construction of garments, accessories, etc. FASHION SHOW CONTEST The county Fashion Show contest provides several opportunities for youth to display the skills and talents they have acquired. This year s contest will be conducted on February 18, Please pre-register by sending an (by February 1) to NFSwindle@ag.tamu.edu which includes the contestant s name, age division, Construction or Buying, and category. Pre-registration will enable us to begin preparations while allowing you an extra 2 weeks to submit the official entry form. The official entry forms must be received in the 4-H office by February 16, 2016, by noon. There are two main divisions of the Fashion Show: Consumer Buying In the Consumer Buying Division, youth consider a garment to add to their wardrobe. Then the member compares garments from at least 3 different types of stores (department, boutique, discount, online, resale, etc.). By recording the characteristics on a worksheet, the member is able to compare the items and select the best option to purchase. Construction In the Construction Division, youth learn basic sewing skills as they construct garments and participate in activities. Youth will need to keep fabric bolt information (fiber content & care instructions) and receipts for the entry paperwork. Storyboard-Participants in this contest create a poster featuring their design (of one item), along with ideas for color variations, design modifications, embellishments, inspiration, etc. The poster is submitted, but there is no interview or modeling portion for this contest. The poster is your entry, no form needs to be submitted. Just Pre-register by February 1st. Categories for Storyboard: Wearable (pants, skirt, dress, sweater, etc.) Accessory (belt, purse, bag, hat, etc.) Pet Clothing (articles that can be worn by a pet) Non-Wearable (pillow, organizer, stuffed animal, etc.) Jewelry (necklace, bracelet, ring, etc.)

4 Share the Fun Great News! It is time to begin preparation for the upcoming Share the Fun contest! The Share the Fun event is a talent contest which provides an opportunity to be creative, share your talents, and share in the fun with 4-H youth across the county. Youth may participate individually or within age division groups. Categories are provided to encourage youth to showcase traditional talents as well as those that are very creative and unique. Contest Date: February 26, 2016 Entry Forms Due: February 3, 2016 Event Location: 3900 Meadowbrook Drive; Fort Worth, TX 1 All categories allow individual or group entries (1 9 participants of the same age division, i.e. Jr., Int., Sr.) 2 All categories have a time limit of six (6) minutes for presentation and four (4) minutes for set-up and break down. 3 NO Accompanist is permitted for any category. If music is required, it must be on a CD, digital format, and cassette tape or performed by the contestant. Contestant is responsible for bringing equipment, setting the volume, and arranging for an adult to turn the music on and off at the appropriate times. 4 Acts must be appropriate for family audiences of all ages. 5. The following materials are prohibited: helium balloons, confetti, talcum powder, flour, pies, water, oil, feathers, flower petals, hay or other substances which are hard to clean up, may cause damage, or be dangerous to participants. No roller skates, shoes with spikes, cleats, motorized vehicles, live animals or real fire arms will be allowed. A 2016 change in the State Roundup rules will be honored at district and county levels as well. 5 Educational Presentation The Educational Presentations contest provides an opportunity for youth to select a topic of interest, research, and prepare an educational presentation. Each presentation is usually 5-12 minutes in length and may include posters, slides, or visual props. Presentations may be made by individuals or age-division teams. This is an excellent opportunity for youth to practice their public speaking skills in a supportive, non-threatening environment. In order to accommodate busy schedules, youth may select one of three presentation options. Presentations may be made at the Extension office: March 10, 2016 at 2 pm ; or at 6:30 pm; or member may submit a USB video by March 9 Entry forms are due on February 24, 2016, and may be submitted by or fax for your convenience. Community Service Project The Texas 4-H Council has selected Eli s Fund as this year s community service project. From now through Texas 4-H Roundup, we encourage your counties to support this effort. The Moore family of Corpus Christi, TX has provided a $5,000 Challenge Award donation to the Texas 4-H Foundation which will be awarded to the top three counties raising funds. The award will be disbursed in the amount of $2500, $1500, and $1000 respectively. More about Eli s Fund: Eli, a bomb-sniffing military working dog was assigned to US Lance Cpl. Colton Rusk. In December, 2010, Lance Cpl. Rusk was killed by sniper fire in Afghanistan. Eli, ever faithful to his handler was left depressed and alone. He would not leave Lance Cpl. Rusk s cot at the base for several weeks. In February 2011 Lance Cpl. Rusk s family in South Texas was allowed to adopt Eli. The Texas Veterinary Medical Foundation (College of Veterinary Medicine, CVM) has pledged to cover all of Eli s veterinary care for the rest of his life. The CVM established Eli s Fund as a source of financial support for active duty service men and women, medically retired veterans service animals and retired military animals. Donation are being made directly to the already established fund at the Texas A&M Foundation. Make sure those donating denote #Texas4h and their county information in the Additional Comments or Instructions.

6 Cheers Community Service All the blankets (30+) that were donated at the County Christmas Party were donated to A Hug for Herschel. This organization provides blankets to the homeless in downtown Fort Worth. Congratulations to all the 4-H youth who participated in this service project. Pre-entries must be postmarked by February 26. No phone entries will be accepted. Stalls will open at noon on Friday, March 11, books open at 4 p.m. and classes begin at 6 p.m. On Saturday books open at 8 a.m. and classes begin at 9 a.m. Finally, on Sunday books open at 8 a.m. and classes at 9 a.m. Stall hours include: Friday from noon to 10 p.m.; Saturday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Sunday from 7 a.m. until noon. The class list and entry forms are available on-line at: Exhibitors are reminded that a negative coggins is required. On Friday evening there will be 18 classes offered including; barrels, flags, poles and stakes classes. On Saturday there will be 33 classes offered including; miniature classes, stallions classes, gelding classes, mare classes, color classes, showmanship, stick horse and costume classes plus trail, stock horse, ranch horse and reining classes. On Sunday there will be 25 classes offered including: Hunter under saddle classes, Western pleasure classes, lead line classes and western horsemanship classes. The judge for the weekend is Tina White. Horse-O-Rama is the largest annual education equine event in Texas. Implemented by the Tarrant County Extension Horse Committee, horse enthusiasts of all levels come together for three incredible days of fun, education, competition and entertainment. The goal of Horse-O-Rama is to enhance the quality of life by developing life skills through the networking of various breeds, organizations, associations and interest groups. New Texas Livestock Education & Validation Facebook Page Last year, due to increased emphasis on our validation programs and the need to disseminate accurate information regarding livestock projects to Agricultural Science Teachers/County Extension Agents, we created a closed Facebook group (Texas Livestock Validation) limited to the educators supervising livestock projects in Texas. The response has been incredible as many of you are utilizing another method of communication to gain critical rule changes and send timely deadline reminders. As mentioned, the group sought to reach educators, not other clientele interested in livestock projects. After hundreds of external requests to join the educator Facebook group, we began discussions with representatives from Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, Texas FFA and the Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas concerning the obvious desire our clientele has for validation and livestock project information. In response to this need, we have partnered to create a Facebook page to connect exhibitors, breeders, traders, fitters, families and leaders/volunteers to relevant information critical to successfully and ethically participating in the livestock project.
