2 4-H ADULT LEADER S MEETINGS Calling All Adults Upcoming meeting dates: October 11th November 7th 6:00 p.m. in the Extension Meeting Room Everyone please try to attend to discuss the new 4-H year, Syrup Festival and upcoming events!! Youth Advisory Board Rusk County is looking for smart young men and women to serve on its youth board. This board serves the entire county and assists the 4-H agent with educational planning for local school districts and the county programs offered through Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. If you know anyone who would make a great youth board member if you would please notify me by either phone or I would really appreciate it. Qualifications: Does not have to be a 4-H member just a member of Rusk county Is 11 or older Wants to make a difference in their community Has a heart for serving others in their area Wants to see youth empowered/or wants to be an empowered youth Has the ability to make quarterly or biyearly meetings for the board Wants to serve Has ideas for new things in the community service idea...meeting will be November 7th -Officer Election-5:30 p.m. -If you are a club Council Delegate please attend this meeting, even if you do not want to run for office. This is part of your duties in that office. We will discuss Syrup Festival and do planning for Jackpot show 5:30 pm February 28 - March 4, 2017 If you plan on showing steers, commercial heifers, lambs, goats or pigs at Rusk County Youth Project Show in March 2017 you need to validate/enter your project on the following dates: Commercial Heifers- week of October 10th-15th by appointment only (location Dr. Corley s office) Steers- October 8th 8-10 am Expo Lambs and Goats - December 3rd 8-10 am Expo Hogs and Breeding Gilts - December 3rd 8-10 am Expo (Superintendent also needs to know if any PeeWee has their own hog in order to reserve a pen for that hog) Breeding Heifers - December 3rd 8-10 am (you only need to bring your entry cards and entry fee, not the animal) Roasters - order forms are due November 16th, entry cards and entry fees are due at pick up on December 29th Wingband numbers are due December 30 th Broilers - orders are due December 7th Entry cards and entry fees are due at pick up on January 17th Wingband numbers are due January 18th Shop and Creative Arts - January 10th 4-6 pm Expo Market and Breeding Rabbits - February 11th 8-10 am Henderson Ag Dept Breeding Goats - February 11th 8-10 am Henderson Ag Dept (you only need to bring your entry cards and entry fee, not the animal) Dairy Cattle - February 11th 8-10 am Henderson Ag Dept (you only need to bring your entry card and entry fee, not your animal) PeeWee - February 11th 8-10 am Henderson Ag Dept (only bring entry card and entry fee, you do not have to bring your animal) Attention RCYPS Steer Exhibitors If you are feeding a county-bred steer for the 2017 Rusk County Youth Project Show, make sure you fill out a county-bred steer verification form so that you will be eligible for premiums that will be awarded by the Extension Ag & Natural Resources Committee at the 2017 Show. These forms are available at the Extension Office. Forms are due to the Extension Office by October 21st.

We hope everyone has left November 12th open to come and work at the Hayride Shuttle. You need to sign up now so that we have the morning and afternoon shifts covered well! Call now and get the shift you want. Need Workers for the following: Money takers, hand stampers, trailer riders, drivers and unloaders 4-H AGE DIVISION If you want to compete in 4-H contests - these are the age divisions. Junior 3rd through 5th grade Intermediate 6th through 8th grade Seniors - 9th through 12th grade (Grade is based on August 31st of current 4-H year.) If you would like to drive and/or have a flat bed trailer to haul behind trucks or if you have a ball hitch, please bring it with you, we will mark it and make sure it gets back to you. Please call the Extension Office and we will put your name on the list. For those of you helping out that day please read the following: 1. If you have a 4-H T-shirt please wear it. 2. Saturday morning, November 12th meet at Boatcycle Chemical, 219 North Van Buren St., Henderson at 8:00 a.m. 3. You need to call and sign up for a shift of 1/2 day or all day. We have a schedule and we will fill the working spot on first come first serve. So call today and pick your time and spot to work. 4. We should have no more than 2 members per trailer. If you need somewhere to work, contact the Extension Office. We will have two pickup and drop off stops and at each area. You can take money, stamp hands or help out in other ways. Just come ready to work!!! We always have a lot of fun and each club member can make money for their club. 5. Sign in!!! -- you must sign in and sign out in order to be counted. You must work all day (8 hours) or 1/2 day (4 hours) to be counted. There will be sign in sheets at the downtown loading and at the Depot loading. 6. Call the Extension Office if you have any questions. 4-H Food and Nutrition, Fashion, and Consumer Intro Workshop October 15th, :00 am-11:00 am This year finds changes in the time frame of some of the traditional contests. The district food and fashion show will be held on the same date in February 2017, and the district consumer decision making contest will be a virtual contest and will be held in March. So...if you are interested in learning more about: Consumer Decision Making Project... Fashion Show and the other projects with this contest... Food Show and the other projects with this contest... then please mark your calendar and plan to attend the Intro Project Workshop. We look forward to seeing you!

The time is near for eligible 4-H members to register for several calf scrambles to be held at the major stock shows of Texas. Parents and youth should make sure that they will be able to commit to participate in the major show in question the following year. They have to be willing to invest the money, time, and transportation of themselves and their project to their respective show. Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo January 13 February 4 Purchase certificate value of $500 Certificates used to purchase a breeding beef or dairy heifer 1. Entry applications will also be available on the Stock Show website fwssr.com on October Entries are sent directly to the show. 3. Entries accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. 4. Each County 4-H Program is limited to a maximum of six entries. Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo March 7-26 Purchase certificate value of $1,500 Certificates used to purchase a breeding beef or dairy heifer or market steer Must show the animal in the 2015 Houston Livestock Show 1. Online entry applications will be available on the Livestock Show website hlsr.com from October 1 through December Entries will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo March Ultimate Scramble Championship Purchase certificate value of at least $1000 while others could be awarded $1,500, $2,000, $2,500, or $5,000 Certificates used to purchase market or breeding animals. Must show the animal in the 2015 Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo. Entries begin October 1 directly to the show. Entry fee is $25. 9 White Chocolate Ghosts Ingredients 12 ounces white chocolate chips 1 1/2 tablespoons vegetable oil Lollipop sticks Mini chocolate chips..to Brandelyn Cochran on her East Texas State Fair Creative Art successes! *1 st place - Christmas & Holiday - Original handmade holiday item *1 st place - Antiques - Toys *1 st place - Crochet & Tatting - Hot Pad or Pot Holders *Recycled Creation 1 st place Tricolor 2 nd place Directions Line a baking sheet with waxed paper; set aside. Melt white chocolate in a heat-proof bowl over simmering water; stir occasionally. Remove bowl; mix in oil. Drop 1 tablespoon of mixture onto prepared baking sheet. Use the back of a teaspoon to quickly spread into a ghost. Place a lollipop stick at the base, spinning to coat. Add chocolate chip eyes. Refrigerate ghosts 5 minutes, then peel off. Crisp Candy Corn Treats Ingredients Cooking spray 9 tablespoons unsalted butter, divided 12 cups miniature marshmallows, divided 3/4 teaspoon fine salt, divided 9 cups crisp puffed-rice cereal, divided Yellow and red food coloring 1 tablespoon grated orange zest (optional) 1 tablespoon grated lemon zest (optional) Directions Lightly coat a 5-by-9-inch loaf pan with cooking spray. In a large saucepan, melt 3 tablespoons unsalted butter over medium. Add 4 cups miniature marshmallows and 1/4 teaspoon fine salt; stir until melted. Stir in 3 cups crisp puffed-rice cereal and immediately transfer to pan. Coat an offset spatula with cooking spray and firmly press mixture into an even layer. Rinse saucepan. Repeat step 1 twice: To second batch, add orange zest and enough yellow and red food coloring to tint marshmallow mixture orange before adding cereal, then press into pan. To third batch, add lemon zest and enough yellow food coloring to tint marshmallow mixture yellow. Press third batch into pan. Let set 2 hours (or overnight). Run a small knife around edges of pan and invert loaf onto a cutting board. With a serrated knife, cut loaf into 10 slices. Cut each slice in half crosswise.
