4 Junior Livestock Information Hello 4-H/FFA Youth, Parents, and Volunteers! Happy New Year! We hope that this finds you all doing well. We have been asked by the members of the BEJL Board to pass on this important information to you. The BEJL Board has always focused on the important educational opportunities that livestock projects have to offer 4-H and FFA members. It has become a recent concern to many that learning opportunities, growth, and youth development aren't a focus for youth in their projects. In order to help with this concern, the BEJL board has asked that USU Extension and Box Elder/Bear River FFA Chapters help to provide more learning opportunities for the youth of our County. The Board feels so strongly about learning and youth development that they have voted to require that all youth attend a minimum of 2 of the following events/clinics in order to be eligible to show/sale their animals at the Box Elder County Fair : Livestock Education Dates and Taggings for Gratitude Clinic- How to say Thank You, Thank You Card Creation, etc.- January 24 th - 6:00-7:00 PM, Fairgrounds (Fine Arts Building) -Livestock Market Selection Clinic- February 21 st -6:00-7:30 PM Fairgrounds (Auction Barn) -Livestock Nutrition and Rate of Gain- March 22 nd - 6:00-7:00 PM Fairgrounds (Auction Barn and Museum Building) -1 st Steer Tagging- March 28 th 5:30-7:00 PM, Fairgrounds (Auction Barn) -Steer Tagging- March 29 th -Out West -2 nd Steer Tagging- April 6 th - 9:00-11:00 AM, Fairgrounds (Auction Barn) -Last Chance Steer Tagging- April 13 th - 9:00-10:00 AM, Fairgrounds (Auction Barn) -County Livestock Judging Competition & Educational Clinic- April 18 th - 6:00-7:30 PM Fairgrounds (Auction Barn) -1 st Bucket Calf Tagging- May 2 nd - 5:30-7:00 PM, Fairgrounds -Bucket Calf Tagging- May 3 rd -Out West -2 nd Bucket Calf Tagging- May 11 th -10:00 AM-12:00 PM, Fairgrounds -Disease Recognition and Prevention Clinic- May 16 th - 6:00-7:00 PM, Fairgrounds (Auction Barn) -1 st Market Lamb and Goat Tagging- May 23 rd - 4:30-6:30 PM, Fairgrounds (Small Indoor Arena) -1 st Market Hog Tagging- May 23 rd - 7:00-9:00 PM, Fairgrounds (Parking Lot East of Fairgrounds) -Market Hog, Lamb, and Goat Tagging- May 24 th - Out West -Last Chance Bucket Calf Tagging- May 24 th - 5:00-6:00 PM, Fairgrounds -2 nd Market Hog Tagging- June 1 st -7:00-8:30 AM, Fairgrounds (Parking Lot East of Fairgrounds) -2 nd Market Lamb and Goat Tagging- June 1 st -9:30-11:00 AM, Fairgrounds (Small Indoor Arena) -Last Chance Market Hog, Lamb, and Goat Tagging- June 7 th -9:00-10:00 AM, Fairgrounds (Small Indoor Arena)

We have tried to keep the duration of each learning opportunity to a small amount of time, usually no more than one hour. We would ask that youth plan to stay the entire time. We will have many guest expert speakers who will put a lot of preparation into your learning experience. Please find clinics that you are interested in and mark them on your calendars ASAP! USU Extension, Bear River FFA and Box Elder FFA will also work to provide reminders as the events approach. *Attending tagging with your livestock animal will count as one of the two required events/clinics. Exhibitors must be present at the tagging with their animal to receive credit. *Roll call will be taken at these events for those in attendance, attendance records will be kept and filed, and all records will be reviewed by the BEJL Board before weigh-in at the Fair. Please make sure to put these important dates on your calendar ASAP! We hope that these clinics will provide more opportunities for you to learn and advance with your livestock projects. Thanks, Josh Dallin, USU Extension TJ Rhodes, BR FFA Dave Shaffer, BR FFA Kelly Kunzler, BR FFA Wayne Burrell, BE FFA Kris Thompson, BE FFA More Junior Livestock Information In an effort to improve the overall quality of livestock exhibited, the board discussed and voted on some important and exciting changes concerning minimum weights for Livestock species. The board has asked that this information be shared from the USU Extension Office. Please note the following minimum weight changes as you prepare to select your livestock for the upcoming 2019 year: Steers 1225 lbs minimum with no shrink Hogs 235 lbs to 290 lbs Lambs 110 lbs minimum (105 lbs at tagging) Please be aware that Last Chance taggings require a $50 late fee per animal.
