2 It s The Week (or a few weeks) Before Fair Excerpt from Jean s Boots are Made for Talking It's the week before the county fair in our tiny part of the world. The wonderful, beloved, long-awaited, anticipated, (right-about-tuesdayoverrated) county fair. What does that look like? Well, per usual, not this Rockwell painting: Show boxes are being pulled out, scrubbed out and rinsed out. Old ribbons are being straightened out then carried to the house. Do you keep yellow ribbons? That is an internal debate. Show halters are being scrubbed then conditioned. Kids are realizing that their parents may have known what they were talking about when they said, "Clean it out now. In a year you'll be glad you did." Kids are wishing that they had. Open class exhibitors are watering, plucking, scouting, pruning, picking, poking and poaching the perfect produce. They're also trying to remember what time the old Master Gardener around the block usually goes for his Saturday morning coffee? Before open class check-in ends at 10:00, they hope. Muffins are burning, cakes are collapsing, little brothers are taste-testing things they shouldn't and young gals are calling their grandmothers to decipher cursive writing on a recipe card, From the Kitchen of: Mary Lou, Show numbers, registration papers and health papers are held in higher regard than the third child's birth certificate. Perhaps even the third child, entirely. Grandparents are gathering their one dollar bills, sure that half of their life savings will be spent on fair food and the livestock auction in the next 10 days. As long as the grandkids are happy...and hydrated. Survive it, embrace it, love it, and remember: The next few days will go so quickly. But seriously - next year? Start earlier. 2

3 Shows and Contests and Festivals, Oh MY! As you might imagine, we receive information for shows and contests on a fairly regular basis this time of year. Some, with virtually NO lead time to get the information out to others. And some, frankly, are on the far side of the state you might be interested, you might not. We don t even begin to try to list all of those in this newsletter, though we do our best to send them to you and save that information should questions arise. If you are curious about a particular kind of contest or show, in a general geographic area, let the Extension office know and we ll do our best to pass information along to you as it becomes available. 4-H MFA Saddle Award The award is given to the Missouri 4-H member aged 14 years and older participating in the Missouri 4-H horsemanship program who demonstrates knowledge and skills in horsemanship and horse science, the ability to share the knowledge and skills with other members and the commitment to better their community. Applications must be postmarked by July 6 and submitted to: MFA Saddle Award, State 4-H Office, 1110 S College Ave, Columbia, MO To find out more visit - Fair Exhibits: Display Requirements All project members are responsible for knowing the rules printed in the county fair book and State Fair premium guide (if one of your goals is to exhibit at the State Fair). The mounted photo should be place in a clear plastic 8 ¼ x 10 ½ inch sleeve. Mat board and plastic sleeves are available at the Extension Office for purchase for 75 cents a set. Entomology or Geology Display Boxes no larger than 18 long x 24 wide and 3 ½ deep. No handles or knobs. Scrapbooking Exhibits should be only 1 page, 1 side representative of the complete scrapbook. o Size not to exceed 12 x 12 o All pages should be in a clear protective sleeve or clear zipper bag. Any exhibits using batteries such as circuit boards or robots, should not connect the wires to the battery rather the wires should be taped behind the battery. Another option is to not attach battery but indicate battery goes here. This is to prevent potential fire hazards. Shooting Sports exhibits should contain no live ammunition and arrow points should be removed. 3

4 State Fair 4-H Building Ambassadors Is the Missouri State Fair at the 4-H Building a summer tradition for your family? Maybe the fair is a new experience for your family and you would like to learn more. Either way, we have a deal for you! We are looking for 4-H families who are willing to donate 2 ½ hours as a 4-H Building Ambassador in the 4-H building during the Missouri State Fair. You ask, What will I do during this time? Here is what we need from you if you decide to help: 1. Greet people as they enter the 4-H Building. 2. Promote and answer questions about 4-H. 3. Help with the special activities held in the building. You will receive a 4-H Building Ambassador t-shirt to wear during this time, sponsored by the Missouri 4-H Foundation. Now that you are excited about this opportunity, you need to sign up! The 4-H building Ambassador opportunity is available as an event in 4Honline. Each person in your family that plans to work will need to register. Select a date and time and t-shirt size. Common Questions Who can sign up to help? o 4-H members, 4-H leaders and 4-H parents Do we have to stay the full 2 ½ hours? o Yes Can a Clover Kid help? o Yes, if one of their parent s volunteers to help Will we need to pay to get into the fair? o Yes My son who is a 4-H member wants to work as a parent I do not can he still work? o Well of course. No judgement from us. 4-H Robotics at Missouri State Fair Show-Me Robots, August 12 4-H members in the robotics project may participate in the Show-Me Robots at the Missouri State Fair on Sunday, August 12 from 10 am-5 pm. in the Lowell Moheler building on the fairgrounds. There will be several hands on activities around 4-H robotics and other STEM projects, exhibition by FIRST and VEX robotics, and colleges and universities with information about careers in STEM. There is no registration for this event and it would make a good field trip for 4-H robotics project groups. 4-H STEM Lab with HughesNet National 4-H has partnered with HughesNet to establish the 4-H STEM Lab with hands on activities for a variety of ages of youth. A few examples are found here. These hands-on activities are designed to instill curiosity, and critical thinking, helping kids develop the skills needed to be successful in life. They are also fun, easy to do, and feature a messy factor just for you! The activities come with a PDF of the step by step and supply list. These could be good possibilities for 4-H SPIN Club activities around STEM. 4

8 End of Year Award Forms For most of you, end of year award forms are not on the fore front of your mind. For a few families, you may be thinking about them. All county forms are due Friday, September 28 Forms For members to earn a project disc (that are made to go on the white metal boards) a project record form is due. It is one page, front/back form for all projects, except shooting sports, more detail is asked for that project. To be eligible for additional awards, for example: livestock awards, sewing award, I Dare You etc., the 4-H Achievement Summary is due. This is one summary form per member. Not one form/folder per project. o Additional guidelines have been provided to help explain expectation of content. There is a 1 page maximum per project/section where writing is required. This does not mean that 8-10 years are expected to write 1 page, 1 page is the limit. To help provide some clarification this is stated in each section: Suggestion: 8-10 year olds, 1/2 page; year olds, 2/3 page; year olds, 1 page. A full description of the county awards program, with available awards, is posted on the county website. Question: What if a member has already received an award (i.e. senior sheep award), but would still like to earn a project disc without completing the project section of the Summary form? Cool! A combination of project record forms and Achievement Summary form will be accepted. All end of year award forms are due by Friday, September 28 to the Extension Office. Forms are available on the county website: extension.missouri.edu/audrain/4hevents.aspx. Club Reports Merry Martins May 14, 2018 The Merry Martins 4-H Club met on May 14.
