1 Hello 4-H Families! Ravalli County 4-H News Independence is one of the main concepts of 4-H and Positive Youth Development. It is described as the ability for seeing oneself as an active participant in the future. In essence, this is when a youth looks forward to their future and make choices toward their vision. In 4-H, Independence is achieved by allowing members to decide on goal and make steps toward them. This is by deciding and completing a project, seeing a need in the community and doing something to help with it through community service as an individual or club member; or deciding to run for office and learning about the position. Encourage your child to do the following: -Set attainable goals and work toward them -Given youth the opportunity to dream about future plans and encourage them to set goals to attain them -Allow members to choose projects and participate in the club community service projects -Encourage youth to explore new hobbies and extracurricular activities Want to encourage Independence in your club? Here are a few ways: -Plan and create an end of year celebration to honor the successes from the year -Invite community members or parents to share a short program on their career choice -Encourage older teens to give back to their club by encouraging them to mentor younger members. Also encourage teens to participate in state-wide 4-H events like Congress, Rec Lab and Winter Teen Camp. -Allow all members to have a voice at meetings even the quiet ones to share their opinion. -Create meaningful leadership roles in the club to allow many youth to hold an office. Have a game leader, birthday card sender, song leader be creative! This article was adapted from PYD: Independence by University of Illinois Extension. Happy March! 3 From The Beef Barn Hello everyone! Hopefully your beef projects are going very, very well at this point! If you are working on a cow/calf pair this year the arrival of that calf should be coming up soon if not on the ground already! A very exciting time for sure. Tips for this month continue on from last months idea of working with cattle Stockmanship. Interestingly enough, the February edition of Angus Journal has several articles relating to this subject. For some decent reading, log on to angusjournal.epubxp.com and take a look at the articles found on pages , 242, and 243. All these articles refer to lowstress environments for the cattle and define what Stockmanship is about. For something to remember if you cannot access the articles-the article on p refers to Stockmanship as meaning "being a caregiver Caregivers should be dedicated to making every human-cattle interaction a positive experience for both parties." Another recommendation for you and your beef project is to get that steer out of his pen, into a trailer and to a scale to weigh him. This will do a couple of things. First it will let you see how well your steer is gaining or not gaining based on your feed program. Weighing your steer repeatedly throughout the year will help you track his growth closely. Second, moving your steer out and about will help him get used to different environments and not get worked up. This will be important when moving into the fair this August. For those that may be new to this project or anyone who is unsure of where a scale may be that they could use don't hesitate to call for assistance. Have a great month. Respectfully submitted, Lee Severson Bill Bennett 4-H News / 4-H Events Montana Pork Producers Council and MSU Extension announce 2015 Symbol of Excellence winners The Montana Pork Producers Council (MPPC) and MSU Extension announced the 2015 Symbol of Excellence winners at the MPPC s Annual Meeting on January 21, A total of 1583 hogs were entered into the contest with 232 hogs qualifying for Symbol of Excellence.
