SUMMER 2007 World s Largest Junior Livestock Show Inside This Issue SALE OF CHAMPIONS BUYERS IMPORTANT CHANGES & INFOR- MATION CHESAPEAKE ENERGY ACADEMIC ALL-STATE Important Dates September 13-23, 2007 Junior Livestock Show October 22, 2007 Steer Nominations Due October 30, Muskogee October 31, Chickasha November 1, Enid The 2007 Oklahoma Youth Expo marked another recordbreaking year as it concluded with a remarkable Sale of Champions. Up from last year s total of over $740,000, the 2007 Sale raised over $755,000, for the 195 student exhibitors selected to participate. The evening began with the auctioning of the Grand Champion Steer shown by Risa Ridling of Sentinel which was purchased for $50,000. Purchasers of the Grand Steer included the Bank of Western Oklahoma, Chain Ranch, Express Ranches, First Capital Bank, Limestone LLC, Robyn Promotions and Rolling Triple R. Yukon FFA exhibitor, Kristi Mathena, was the owner of the Grand Champion Barrow which sold for $25,000, from Blue & Gold Sausage and Oklahoma Farm Bureau. The Grand Champion Lamb was exhibited by Baylor Newcomb of the Merritt FFA Chapter and was purchased by Touchstone Energy Cooperatives of Oklahoma for $23,000. Finally, rounding out the Grand Champion animals was the top-placing goat at the OYE shown by Stasha Harp of Kansas. Stasha s market goat sold for $9,000, and was purchased by Farm Credit Services of Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Meat Goat Association and the Oklahoma Youth Expo. It is evident that the success of the Oklahoma Youth Expo hinges on the invaluable support of a very strong group of sponsors, buyers and dedicated individuals. 3 Page 3 IMPORTANT CHANGES/INFORMATION Listed below are important changes and information which will be taking effect beginning with the 2008 Oklahoma Youth Expo. Please see the Oklahoma Youth Expo web site at for further information and a complete list of rules as well as a daily schedule of events. OYE Schedule The 2008 Oklahoma Youth Expo Grand Champion Drives will be held on Wednesday, March 19, while the Sale of Champions will be held on Thursday, March 20. This is modified from our usual daily schedule in order to avoid the Easter Holiday. Dress All junior exhibitors must wear a vest or jacket and a collared, white button shirt. The vest or jacket must be of the appropriate color of the organization they represent, with an official emblem of at least 2 1/2 inches. The new addition to the dress rule will be strictly enforced at the 2008 Oklahoma Youth Expo. Animal Substitution An exhibitor may substitute one animal for another of the same species and sex as long as each animal has been properly nominated and/or satisfies all of the show eligibility requirements such as ownership, age, etc. Animals that do not meet the proper nomination requirements or other show eligibility requirements cannot be substituted for other animals. Animals may not be substituted across species or sex. Examples are below: Ex. 1 - An exhibitor may substitute a barrow for a barrow or a heifer for a heifer. Ex. 2 - An exhibitor may NOT substitute a barrow for a gilt (different sex) or a wether for a steer (different species). Ex. 3 - An exhibitor may NOT substitute a market wether lamb for a market ewe. Commercial Gilt Weight Commercial Gilts have a new minimum weight requirement of 230 lbs. instead of 200 lbs. Goat Showmanship Goat Showmanship will no longer be a qualified show, meaning that all exhibitors who enter and exhibit goats at the Oklahoma Youth Expo will be allowed to show in the goat showmanship contest. All sheep (excluding purebred ewes) and goat nominations will go back to a manual, on-site nomination process. There will be three days and three different locations for exhibitors to nominate their sheep and/or goats. All steers and swine will continue to be a selfnominating, mail-in process. Swine Nomination Deadline The swine nomination deadline has been moved up one month to December 10, This decision has been made in order to meet the 90 day ownership requirement for swine. PQA Training There will NOT be an on-site PQA training at the show. 4 *IMPORTANT* Ag Teachers and County Extension Educators: The Oklahoma Youth Expo will be held March 10-20, These dates were selected to avoid the Easter Holiday which will fall on March 23, Please be aware of the changes in days of the week that events will take place. For instance, the Grand Champion Drive and Scholarship Presentations will be on Wednesday, March 19, while the Sale of Champions will be held on Thursday March 20.
