1 C A M P B E L L C O U N T Y 4 - H 2017 Cooperative Extension Service Campbell County 3500 Alexandria Pike Highland Heights KY ((859) Fax: (859) campbell.ca.uky.edu 2017 ALEXANDRIA FAIR PARADE When: Wednesday, August 30 Where: CCMS parking lot Time: Be there by 6:15pm *Parade ends at the fairgrounds *Parents need to make arrangements with their children to pick them up there. *Children under 9 years old must be properly supervised by a parent along the parade route. *There will be a 4-H float. We are limited to a SMALL number of walkers so be prepared to ride on the float. Candy cannot be thrown from the float. Other important fair information: *Check in for exhibits & record books is Tuesday, August 29 from 2-6pm at the fairgrounds exhibit hall. This is a change from previous years! Check in is now on Tuesday! *Record books & project stories MUST accompany exhibits. Books may be typed or handwritten. *Check the 4-H website to make sure your entry fits the category BEFORE you bring it to the fair. *Alexandria Fair books will be available at the Extension Office. The fair book has a schedule of the entire fair weekend as well as other important fair information. Fair books are also available at local businesses. 4-H Fair booth needs YOUTH (and YOU!) 4-H will have a booth at the fair again this year! We need your help at the booth to get the word out about 4-H in Campbell County! Volunteers are needed (parents, 4-H ers, & club leaders from ALL clubs!) The booth will be open Wednesday through Monday of the fair weekend (August 30 September 4). Booth volunteers will be handing out some fun 4-H goodies and other 4-H information. It s also a great place to people watch, eat some fun fair food, and drink all the cold water you want! Call or Sherri Farley (sfarley@uky.edu) to sign up for your spot soon! Let us know when you call if you need a 4-H shirt to wear during your shift! *ALL 4-H exhibits & record books are to be picked up from the exhibit hall between 2-6pm on Tuesday, September 5.

2 4-H Rabbits Rules: Alexandria Fair Rabbit Show When: Thursday, August 31, 2017 Where: 4-H Livestock Barn Time: 6:30 pm (following the 4-H Poultry Show) Who: Any 4-H members interested in showing their rabbit at the Alexandria fair. If you plan to show your rabbit, you MUST enter a record book on August 29 th at the Alexandria Fair Grounds between 2:00pm and 6:00pm. A. Exhibitors may take the exhibits home following the judging B. An overall champion will be selected from class winners. Classes: 4-H-338 Junior buck (under six months) 4-H 339 Senior buck (over six months) 4-H-340 Junior doe (under six months) 4-H-341 Senior doe (over six months) 4-H-342 Champion male (any breed) 4-H-343 Champion female (any breed) Award by: Southern State Cooperative, Alexandria, KY 4-H Camp campers, 62 counselors, 2 assistants and 2 agents had an awesome week at 4-H Camp this year! State 4-H Communications Day On Saturday, July 8th, 2017 the State 4-H Communications Day was held at the University of Kentucky. Congratulations to Abbie Myers for receiving 1st place in the Jr. Horticulture demonstration category and Daniel Myers for receiving 1st place in the Shooting Sports demonstration category. Cowboy Mounted Shooting Thursday, August 31 Main Show Ring - 7:00 PM Come enjoy an evening watching Cowboy Mounted Shooting, the fastest growing Equestrian Sport in the nation, beginning with Flag Presentation and Parade of Contestants. Mounted contestants (both male and female) compete on horseback in this fast-action timed event using two.45 caliber single action revolvers, each loaded with five rounds of specially-prepared blank ammunition. Dressed in traditional western style (a long sleeve western shirt, 5 pocket blue jeans covered by chinks or chaps, western boots, and a cowboy hat) or in the old-time style of the late 1800 s looking as authentic to the period os possible, by wearing shirts without collars, and high-waisted pants with buttons, not zippers, and an old style cowboy hat or a long full skirt or dress, as an example. This is a great event for the family to come watch. Page 3

4 Saddle Up 4-H Club The Saddle-Up Club met on Thursday, July 13, the meeting was called to order by. Pledges were said and attendance was taken. There wee no new members. The secretary s report was read by Lydia Deaton. There were no questions or corrections so the report stands as read. The treasurer s report was read by Rebekah Foutch. There were no questions so the report stands as read. Committee Reports District Council - Report was given by Kassi Parker. The next District Council meeting will be in August. Grounds - Report was given by Paula Barbian. The contest arena is being taken down tonight and set up for the July 16th show. It will be on the 15th at 7:00 weather permitting. Nominating - Report was given by. Debbie Myers was voted co-chair and was voted secretary. State - Report was given by Lydia Deaton. State went well and Campbell County brought home quite a few Highpoint and Reserve Highpoint awards. Mr. Prim - Horse camp went well. Good job to everyone who competed at District and State. 4-H Record books are due on Tuesday, August 29th for the Alexandria Fair. New Business We will be doing the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Fundraiser at the fair again this year on 8/31/17. We donated money to send care packages to service men overseas and they were greatly appreciated. There will be an opening for District Council representative. Leslie Deaton has moved to leader and Tim Ford will be a co-leader. If you are interested in going to Southern Regionals let Kassi know. There was a motion made by Sophia and seconded by Karly Kursell. The meeting was adjourned. Reporter: Alexus Ford The Saddle-Up Club met last on August 3rd, 2017 at the Alexandria Fairgrounds. The changes to the bylaws were discussed and explained. The executive committee made a motion to accept the bylaws as revised. The motion passed. Grounds - Report was given by Paula Barbian. Set up for the August show will be 8am on August 6th before the show. Horse Show - Report was given by Paula Barbian. There will be a horse show on August 6th at the fairgrounds. Leslie encourages members that are not showing to come to the show to help. Nominating - Report was given by Deborah Myers. The slate for officer positions has been finalized, and we will vote for our officers at the next meeting. Fundraising - Report was given by Cheryl Myers. There will be a cowboy mounted shooting fundraiser on August 31st at the fairgrounds. If you plan on participating in this event please arrive at 6:45 Announcements Mr Prim has paper copies of record books for the fair. The record books are also online. Record books are due on August 29th. Congratulations to Nadia and Kassi for going to Southern Regionals. Next meeting will be September 9th. There will be a banquet meeting immediately following the meeting tonight. The meeting was adjourned. Reporter: Alexus Ford Kindred Hearts Homeschool Club The Kindred Hearts 4-H Homeschool Club met on July 7th at the Harriet Beecher Stowe House in Cincinnati, Oh from 1pm-2pm. We took a tour of the house and learned a lot about Harriet Beecher Stowe and the history of Cincinnati during the abolition movement. Harriet Beecher Stowe is most famous for writing the book Uncle Tom s Cabin, which was the second most bought book in the 19th century. This book opened the world s eyes and minds to how dehumanizing slavery really was. Learning more about the historic places around where we live has been a great way to learn about our country s history. Our next meeting will be on August 11, It will be held at the Campbell County Extension Office from 10am-12pm. We will be painting cans for the A.J. Jolly dragon boat racing which will take place on Sep. 9th. Reporter: Katrina Kursell Page 4

Owen Prim oprim@uky.edu 4-H Issues Conference 2017 Open to high school sophomores & juniors who display leadership potential September 28 October 1 at Kentucky Educational Center at Lake Cumberland $198 per youth covers lodging, most meals, transportation & program costs. All youth will receive an Issues t-shirt. Transportation and chaperones provided by the 4-H office. Participants do not have to be enrolled in 4-H to attend. Orientation scheduled for September 19, 7pm, 4-H office Forms & fee are due to the 4-H office no later than September 1. This is an excused absence from school for 1/2 day on 9/28 and a full day on 9/29. Call or stop by for a registration packet.
