Quilts can interest the very young, the very old and everyone in between. There are a variety of reasons that 4-H members choose to participate in the Statewide Quilt Challenge; some enjoy learning how to make quilt blocks, some enjoy creating something beautiful, others enjoy spending time with their friends as they stitch together, while others enjoy giving their finished quilt to someone in need. It is amazing to see young people so interested in learning to quilt. The Quilt Challenge is a wonder opportunity for 4-H members to learn to quilt. We are very excited about announcing the H Quilt Challenge! This year's challenge fabric is entitled "Barnyard Buddies" by Amy Bradley and includes whimsical barnyard animals on a 4-H green background. The 4-H Quilt Challenge is open to all 4-H members, not just seniors. Entries maybe individuals, teams, or clubs. Adults may help with the quilt design and construction, but a majority of the work needs to be completed by the 4-H members. Quilts may have any design or them but must incorporate some sort of 4-H identification into the quilt top. Completed quilts are donated to a charity (determined by the quilt makers) following Texas 4-H Roundup in June. For more information about the 2010 State Roundup Quilt Challenge, go to clothing/4h/quiltchallenge/2010-quilt-challenge.pdf. To participate in the 4-H Quilt Challenge, complete the attached request form to receive the Challenge fabric. There is a limited supply of challenge fabric so get your request in soon. COMMUNAL Page 9 Texas Farm Bureau s 2010 Youth Leadership Conference is set for June Since 1963, more than 13,000 high school juniors and seniors have attended the annual Texas Farm Bureau Youth Leadership Conference (formerly known as the Citizenship Seminar) each summer. The purpose of the training school is to give selected high school students in Texas a better understanding of the various forms of government and their responsibilities as citizens. Comparisons of the different kinds of economic systems are outlined. The conferences were held for the first three years on the campus of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. From 1966 through 1982, the annual summer training sessions were conducted at Baylor University in Waco. In 1983, the conference was moved to Angelo State University in San Angelo, where it has been conducted ever since, with the exception of 1992 when it was held again at Baylor. Students are selected by county Farm Bureaus with the cooperation of local school officials. Transportation, rooms, meals and a small tuition fee are financed by the sponsoring county Farm Bureaus, sometimes with cooperation of local service clubs. The conference runs three full days and includes lectures, discussions, and films by outstanding authorities in government, history, and economics. Recreation is also provided. Students are encouraged to meet with school and civic groups upon their return home to share the information and knowledge they have received. Students may also participate in the Free Enterprise Speech Contest, in which scholarships are awarded. Contact your Nueces County Farm Bureau at , call , or mail to cdavis@txfb.org Coleburn Davis for applications. Deadline for applications is April 30. Community-Service Project Miss Madison Harlien, 4-H Ambassador and Council member, is collecting backpacks for foster children. These backpacks do not have to be new, but preferably in GOOD condition. These backpacks are for teenage foster children in the South Texas area, that includes Nueces, Jim Wells, Kleberg, and San Patricio counties. In these backpacks, we are asking for any or all of the following items: Underwear (both boys and girls are needed, teenage sizes please, no thongs). Socks (no show preferably, both boys and girls). Toiletries (shampoo, body washes, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant - simple things that we take for granted). Flash drives (to save their school work on). Any and all of these items are very much needed and anything you can donate will be greatly appreciated! Donations may be delivered to the Nueces County 4-H Office or call Madison Harlien at to arrange pickup.
