Gonzales County Extension Staff are very proud of all their 4-H members. The time, dedication, and preparation for your responsible projects are things and lessons that will always be valuable. Now that stock show season is over, we need to remember that 4-H is yearround! There are always great summer opportunities for 4-H members, and we can t forget those 4-H Record books!! The final meeting of the 4-H year will be at the County Extension Office on May 15, 2018 at 6:30 P.M. All Gonzales County 4-H club members are encouraged to come. Congratulations to everyone who participated in the GCYSA Stock Show and major shows this year. Now that stock show season has ended it s time to think about summer plans. Interested in attending camp this summer? Be sure to look into the summer camp opportunities provided by the Texas 4-H Center. Financial assistance is available for camps. Be sure to read about all those details in the newsletter.

EVENTS LIVESTOCK PROJECTS 4-H members who want assistance in selecting their 4-H livestock projects or would like further advice on managing their projects, are encouraged to communicate with their club managers, and are also welcome to seek assistance from your county agent, Dwight Sexton. Mr. Sexton is available to make project visits and provide advice on your projects. 5 Page 5 Page 5 Page National 4-H Congress National 4-H Congress is the flagship event of the National 4-H program held annually at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Atlanta, Georgia on November 23-27, Texas 4-H members can apply starting April 1 st and ending on April 20 th. The applications will be on 4-H CONNECT and are required to have two reference letters, one of which should be from a County Extension Agent. There is no fee to apply. Selected applicants will be notified on April 30th. Face-to-face interviews will be held in College Station on Monday, June 11 th. Once the delegation is selected, the participation fee is $1,500 which cover: Congress registration (includes most meals) Roundtrip airfare Ground transportation in Atlanta Lodging at the Hyatt Regency Educational tours States lunch State photograph Trading pins Commemorative shirt. Registration DOES NOT cover: Getting to and from selected airport Spending money for souvenirs Meals while traveling to and from Atlanta. In order to attend, youth MUST be in grades 9 12 at the time of the event. More details are available at the Extension Office.

6 Page 6 Page 5 Page 5 Major Show Steer Validation Anyone wanting to exhibit Major Show Steers next year (2019) needs to contact the Extension Office and order tags by April 16, State Fair Lamb, Goat & Swine Validation anyone wanting to exhibit lambs or goats or swine at the State Fair of Texas must call the Extension Office to order validation tags by April 16, The validation will occur in June. Major Show Heifer Validation There will be a validation in June for anyone wanting to validate a show heifer for a major livestock show that has not been previously validated. This June validation is for all heifers that will be shown at the fall major stock shows or later. If you have a heifer you want validated, you will need to call the Extension Office by April 16 th to order a validation packet for your animal Horse Validations Anyone wanting to participate in the District or State 4-H Horse Show will need to complete the validation process on the 4-H Connect website. The cost is $10 per horse until April 15 th. After April 15th until May 1 st, the cost is $20 per horse. 25 th Annual Kerr 4-H Skeet & Trap Shoot Registration is now open on iclays for the 25 th Annual Kerr 4-H Skeet & Trap Shoot to be held June 1-3 in Kerrville, TX. This shoot is a Whiz-Bang qualifier for the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department Whiz-Bang Finals. Events include: International Trap, International Skeet, American Skeet, American Trap, Whiz Bang & Sporting Clays. Adults can also register to shoot sporting clays with their kids. 7 Page 7 Page 5 Page 5 Gonzales Shooting Light Rifle Shooting Sports Location: Gonzales City Landfill near the Gonzales City animal shelter that is located on County Road 488 off FM 532 (Moulton Highway) Dates: April 22 nd 3-4 pm May 20 th 3-4 pm RSVP to the Extension Office by Friday Noon before the date of the shoot. Participants must be registered in 4-H on 4-H Connect and are encouraged to bring their.22 rifle to the event. An OBI (open breech indicator) is needed for each rifle. Please call Jay for questions about this. For further questions, please contact Jay Pyssen at (830) Sundowners CLUB NEWS Club Donates Hamburger Helper to GCAM At our April meeting we will not have any program. We will be voting on officers during the time usually allotted for that! Recreation will fill any time voids while ballots are being counted. The ticket drawings will take place as well! You must be present to win. The tickets are the ones that kids have earned by coming to meetings, bringing their folders, bringing community service items etc. Article by: Savay Sexton

8 Page 8 4-H Record Books Start keeping records monthly! Recordkeeping is a very valuable skill taught to members of the Texas 4-H program. Members are encouraged to keep project records and have these records reviewed annually by submitting a Texas 4-H Record book. The primary purposes of completing a record book are for a young person to develop the skills necessary to set goals, work toward achieving those goals, reflect on his/her experiences, and set new and higher goals for themselves. A secondary benefit is to prepare young people for the process of completing quality academic scholarship applications. It is the goal of the Gonzales County Adult Leaders to provide a local review date to ensure all components have been included in the record book and provide suggestions before the book leaves for further judging. This deadline is required for all books in order to be eligible to receive any awards or to be able to apply for a senior scholarship. If a record book is incomplete, the member will be notified and corrections will need to be made prior to the multi county deadline. The Gonzales County deadline for review is in June 15, Books will be reviewed a second time to ensure corrections were made before leaving for Multi County Record book judging. Senior level books must have all corrections made in order to remain eligible for the scholarship. Record book information can be found at or RESOURCES Gonzales County 4-H owns a liquid nitrogen tank to store bull semen for any 4-H member to use for their beef projects. This tank is available for check-out at the AgriLife Extension Office. Rural Youth Loans the Farm Service Agency has a program that provides loans to youth for purchasing income producing livestock to improve and/or begin their operation. Information on this program is available at the Gonzales FSA Office,

9 Page 9 Page 11 Page 11 IMPORTANT REMINDERS FROM COUNTY COUNCIL 4-H County Council Covering More Costs! The Gonzales County 4-H Council met 9/19/17 and agreed to cover the following costs: Half camp fees to the 4-H Conference Center in Brownwood or Leadership based camps hosted by Texas 4-H Half entry fees for participation in a 4-H hosted workshop or state round-up workshop(s) ALL entry fees for District 10 and/or State 4-H level contests hosted by the Texas 4-H Staff ALL entry fees for 4-H team based contests Contact office if this may apply to you. Members are held accountable by submitting a 4-H Payment Request Form and provide receipt of event attended to the council within 30 days of the event attended. Members will be notified once paperwork has been reviewed. Contact office for further information. Paperwork can be picked up at the office or found online at gonzales.agrilife.org Limited Financial Aid Information Gonzales County 4-H Adult Leaders are available to provide limited financial aid for members who have attended workshops, camps, or clinics that enhances his/her 4-H project. Financial aid is also available for those who have represented Gonzales County at the district, state, or national levels in other events. Financial aid can include travel expenses. FIRST, members are held accountable by submitting the limited financial assistance request form and provide receipts (s) of event attended to the adult leaders within 30 days of the event attended. SECOND, the VERIFICATION FORM must be completed after speaking at any 4-H meeting within the given time frame. Late forms will not be accepted. Scholarship News from Adult Leaders: Thank you to all the senior level members who sold fundraiser tickets for the scholarship fundraiser. This was the first year to have all 300 tickets sold. We appreciate your help in making this a success. Attendance sheets must be signed and record books completed by June 15, 2018 to remain eligible. Graduating senior must also fill out the scholarship application and adhere to the deadline. Attendance sheets and scholarship application can be found online. Looking forward: Any returning applicants, future freshman or sophomores who are interested in a scholarship during your senior year must fill out a scholarship agreement in the fall. Paperwork will be included in the August and September newsletters only.

10 Page 9 GONZALES COUNTY AWARDS INFO.: Listed below are all the awards that are available for members through the Gonzales County 4-H. Applications may be picked up at the office and are due back by June 1, GOLD STAR: This is the highest award a member can obtain. The winner will be selected from the following items: A completed record book submitted by June 15 th An application form due by June 1 st An interview To be considered you must apply. Gold Star-The member must be at least 15 at the time of application and must have completed at least 3 years in 4- H, including the current year. To be considered you must apply. JR. MISS AND MR: This is the highest county awards for 12 & 13 year old. The winner will be selected from the following items: award recognizes excellence in character, well-balanced personal development, and potential for leadership. (Ages 14-18) FRIEND OF 4-H (Nominations due to Extension Office by May 14) This award is for an individual, business or organization that has shown exceptional support to the county/club 4- H program. Each club will be able to recognize one friend. The 4-H Council will then vote on the person or business nominated by the 4-H clubs. The person or business can only receive an award once every three years. Club Member of the Year (outgoing, officer, leader, etc) This year instead of just ONE member being recognized regardless of age, now it can be one from the junior level, intermediate level and senior level. Some clubs require record books. Each club will determine who will get the awards. The winners will be kept a secret until the 4-H Banquet. Managers will handle this process. A completed record book submitted June 15 th An application due by June 1 st An interview I Dare You Award: William H. Danforth s book, I Dare You, was first published in It is still considered one of the most influential books in the area of personal motivation. The book is published and distributed by the American Youth Foundation through its I Dare You committee. The I Dare You Leadership Award is not a contest or competition. OUTSTANDING LEADER: To recognize one leader from each club for dedication, effort and support to their 4-H club. Each club will select only one leader as outstanding leader. The leaders will be announced at the 4-H Banquet. High school principals and county agents are asked to select (or have a staff or committee select) nominees. The
