P O Box 220, Booval Qld 4304 Ph: Website: Newsletter 31 st August 2018 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE: With new PB s set by members over the past few meets it was exciting that the Regional Trials on th August produced even more. Now is the time to train smarter and prepare well for the All Schools State Championships in October Well done to all the Coaches, Brad, Mick, Ted, Darin and Theresa (Marty). A special thanks to all the volunteers who helped on our most important fund raising days, the IHF Park2Park, GPS X-Country, AIC X-Country and the 37 th Winter Carnival. The 37 th Winter Carnival was a great success and I thank all the officials / volunteers for making this Carnival awesome. Without sponsors the event would not happen and I sincerely thank each and every one for their support as all funds help our athletes to meet their future goals. The new season events start in October and we have to register on-line. The season runs from 1 st October 2018 to 30 th September Registering can be done now, affiliation with QA has been completed. Vic Congratulations! The Park2Park was a successful event for the Ipswich Hospital Foundation as almost 2000 people competed in the Half Marathon, 10km, 5km Run, 5km Walk and the Half Marathon Relay with funds going to West Moreton Hospital and Health Service.. Our Club supports this amazing event having a food stall on site and a number of runners competing. It was an excellent day for all. An Amazing Crew

Track & Field All Track and Field events are now scheduled on the Queensland Athletics website QAL now has several events scheduled on their website The Mulgowie Gift is on Saturday 1 st September North Queensland Championships Townsville When: Friday 21 st Sunday 23 rd September Entries close: Wednesday 12 th September. (Vic Pascoe is going) Club Uniform The Club uniform must be worn at all interclub meets, e.g. All comers at St. Lucia and Gold Coast etc. If the uniform is not worn, no points or performances will be recorded at inter club meets. The cost of the uniform is as follows: Girls Crop Tops $50-00 Girls Singlet s $37-00 Girls Shorts $30-00 Boys Singlet s $37-00 Boys Shorts $30-00 Old Stock is on sale at $10-00 apiece. These can be used for training etc. Just a Thought I ve learned that. It s true that no one has to be strong all of the time.

Answer to the Question The winner of the July question was Lizzy Melrose The correct answer was: Air A new question is as follows: You may find fire within me Though to water I've been compared. You may also find a twinkle When through my pane you stare. When of wind I am the calm The center holding still. When of you, a different part My bottom lid, my sill. You may look into me only to see through. You may indeed look out of me Through my frame of varied hue. The riddle is in three parts as letters in my name. The riddle shows you who I am But tell me just the same. Who am I? The first club member to reply by with the correct answer wins a prize. - vgpascoe1@bigpond.com.au

THE 37 th Winter Carnival The Club appreciates and wishes to thank all the contributors/donations made out to Ipswich & District Athletic Club Inc. All funds raised assist our athletes in their future endeavours. The Club also thanks the Queensland Athletics League officials / volunteers for their assistance throughout the day. The Carnival turned out to be a wonderful day. The weather did not help at the start but it will go down in history as a memorable day. a special thanks to Paul Langton and Melissa Smith team of the Ipswich Little Athletics Club whose photo finish and electric timing was excellent in getting the results quickly to announcer Graham Bannister. The 29 th running of the 120m Lightning Gift was sponsored by the University of Southern Queensland. Jordan Spry of Redbank when off 8.25m won in a spectacular finish as he fell just pass the finish line, but his recovery to get back on his feet was nothing short of amazing as though nothing had happened. Jordan followed up with his good form from his last professional race in the 100m Somerset Gift, Mudgeeraba back in July Gary Finegen who was the runner up in the Lightning Gift looked the goods after great heat and semi-final runs, but the winner proved to be up to the task. Gary did win this race way back in 2001 when he was a 15yr old youngster. He still can run well even now in his thirties. Phillip Bell Gary Finegen Jordan Spry Fejiro Omuvwie Nicky Jones 120m Lightning Gift at the Bill Paterson oval on Sunday 26 th August The CEO of the Ipswich Hospital Foundation Phillip Bell was present to see a fabulous race along with Nicky Jones, the daughter of a great Coach Geoff Jones and President of our club in the earlier years.

Jin Yoshikawa Rick Cuthel Ted Belcher Nicky Jones 120m Back Markers Consolation Gift sponsored by Geoff Jones Family Geoff Jones was our first Life Member of the Club, a Club President and a wonderful Dedicated and committed Coach. Geoff passed away April It is a magnificent gesture by his wife Berise and family for their ongoing support for this event. Nicky Jones did the honour of presentation. The 120m back-markers gift was won brilliantly by Rick Cuthel after copping a penalty of one metre for breaking, thus making him the actual back marker of an exciting race.

WOMENS 120m Gift sponsored by Ipswich Hospital Foundation / Exact Radiology. The 120m 15 th Ladies Gift was won by Sarah Carroll of Tarragindi and is a year 12 student and joint Captain at Somerville House School, Brisbane. It was her first professional race and she made full use of her handicap of 9.00m for her excited parents and Coach Jayden Russ. Demi Wynyard Stephanie Welsh Sarah Carroll Phillip Bell Flexibility, Strength, Endurance

U/18yrs Boys 70m Dash sponsored by Leisure Riders Touring Motorcycle Club. Kerryn Ryan won the U/18yrs boys 70m Gift from Rick Cuthel with other Club members Sony Vukelic was third with Codi Thompson a close fourth in the 70m gift. Kerryn Ryan Rick Cuthel Codi Thompson Sony Vukelic Tracey Biddell Laylani Va ai Simone Berndt Beth Underwood Lily Richter U/18yrs Girls 70m Dash sponsored by Leisure Riders Touring Motorcycle Club. Laylani Va ai won the U/18yrs Girls 70m Gift brilliantly from Simone Berndt and Beth Underwood with Lily Richter in fourth place.

The 300m Open Gift was sponsored by Spine Street Studios Corey Linton Jarrod Whittaker Daniel Parnell Ted Belcher Gemma Fairclough Kelly Brown The 300m Gift was won by seasoned performer Gemma Fairclough and with experience from running in this year s 400m final (just got run down then) at the Stawell Gift day proved to be the advantage at the finish line with Ted Belcher 2 nd, Daniel Parnell 3 rd, Jarrod Whittaker 4 th and Corey Linton 5 th in a most exciting race to end the 37 th Winter Carnival. How awesome is this, a legend of the sport attending our 37 th Winter Carnival, Sally Pearson with Nicky Jones who stood in for the Geoff Jones family sponsoring the 120m Back markers Gift. Other Winter Carnival events produced 8 new records. This justifies the efforts of athletes to utilize this Carnival as a stepping stone to future endeavours. The results can be viewed at our website along with videos of the gift races on U-tube. Please subscribe.

Club Training Nights Training nights on Monday and Wednesday nights 6.30pm to 8.30pm. A water bottle, towel and appropriate warm clothing are required for all sessions. Queensland Athletics Seasonal Fees. This is a reminder that the Membership is now open. 1 st October th September Just follow the link below, so easy. **** Please note a Club fee is applicable when joining **** Australian Cross Country Championships 25 th August 2018 Tamara Carvolth Holly-Maree Matthew Michael, Jude and Maree Thomas The weather was cool at Maleny Golf Course where the Australian Cross Country Championships were held. This also included the Oceania Cross Country Championships with many Pacific Countries competing. Jude Thomas finished an amazing third position to a New Zealander but was able to claim the Silver medal for Australia and a Bronze medal in the Oceania and then to put icing on the cake, the Queensland Cross Country Team won the Gold Medal in all aspects of the Championships. Victoria team was second with the New Zealand team third and the New South Wales were fourth. With a lap to go (3km), Jude was in 14 th position and was able to work his way to a medal winning performance. His effort was amazing in a true grit style.

This run made Jude the best 16yr old in Australia with a time of 20 minutes and 30 seconds over 6km Australian Cross Country Championships as the race was for 16yrs and 17yrs athletes. His support team of his grandparents and the NANCI running group made it a wonderful memorable occasion. Also club athlete Tamara Carvolth competed in the Australian Open Women 10km Cross Country Championships to finish a gallant 6 th in the race and also was the first Queenslander home in a time of 39 minutes and 47 seconds. Leading the Queensland team home to a Silver medal was a remarkable achievement. Another Club athlete Holly-Maree Matthew ran in the 10yr Girls 2000m Australian Cross Country Championship finishing a creditable 20 th position in a time of 8 minutes and 26 seconds. Holly was the 5 th Queenslander home to ensure the Queensland team won the Silver medal. It was tremendous to see these events unfold winning 1 Gold and 2 Silver medals in the teams and 1 individual silver medal and 1 bronze Oceania medal. Brothers Kindred Club The committee wants to make all club members and parents be aware that our Club is part of the Brothers Kindred Club. This association encourages juniors in their chosen sports to be acknowledged for their commitment and dedication to their respective sports for a Junior Sports Star monthly award. The association also likes to encourage juniors for doing their best, helping around the Club and assisting others who may need that little bit of assistance in techniques etc., please advise Vic Pascoe (Club delegate and publicity officer), of any junior you may think needs to be entered for an Junior Sport Star Encouragement monthly award.
