Please refer to the Commodore s article on page 3 regarding his proposal for a Five-Year-Plan for PYC. Editors Comments Commodore Reeves innovative proposal for continuous progress via his 5-Year Plan should ensure positive direction and continuity for our Club. As turnover in leadership is part of PYC s philosophy, a forward-looking plan will provide for steady progress from term-to-term, while still allowing Innovation by each successive commodore. 3 Welcome home to our Pensacola a la Havana Regatta participants! Special Section pages 8-11 COMMODORE S COMMENTS Kudos to our Vice Commodore Linda Brent and our staff! At the last Board Meeting, we approved six new members for PYC, bringing the total since January 1, 2017 to 38 new members. In the last 2.5 years, we have a total of 159 new members. Our Board, with the support of staff, has moved to make the Mud Hole (that DEP left us) more attractive, added storage spaces to our dry storage area, and provided additional income to the Club by taking non-productive areas of our grounds and turning them into income for the Club. No dues increase or assessments under my watch! JIM REEVES As you know, our Club changes CEO s every year (McMillan exception); therefore your Board has contracted to establish a Five-Year Strategic Plan. When we pass the torch from commodore-to-commodore, there can be an overall plan providing a more seamless transition. The beauty of this plan is that every single member of the PYC will have an opportunity for input into this plan, including the Bridge-Playing Ladies and the Pool Users. We want everybody who wants to be in, to be all in. We insist that this plan be very transparent, so put in or don t complain. We are counting on every member s input for making our new 5-Year Plan a success. Please let your voice be heard when our consultants contact you. This is a comprehensive effort to have an open dialogue with our members - young and old, long-time members and new members. Please involve yourself. The PYC Satori Foundation is continuing to expand their outreach and activities. Following are excerpts from a presentation by Past Commodore Tim Burr concerning the future of The Satori Foundation s Social Mission. In terms of the future, I d like to see us impact many more groups and individuals in our community. So, a broader net and more usage of all of our boats! Having school sailing teams at the high school and higher education levels is another. We should be taking interested kids to the next level of education and training via summer programs and individual coaching, as fits a particular circumstance. Some sort of certification and path-to-licensing could be part of a career-path mix. For adults, we should do evening and weekend sails to promote an interest in our sport and Club. So too, invitations to watch races and help with Race Committee work are excellent ways to promote interest at all levels. None of this can work well without a top notch Sailing Director and more volunteers. In any event, I wouldn t try all of these at once, but instead would pick one or two and phase in the rest.... We are hoping to get a permit, which will allow us to build out the ultimate utilization of our dock and pier operations, including floating slips. But, we are in the hands of the bureaucrats. Our thanks to P/C Larry Bowyer for his persistence with the permitting folks. We want to thank Neil Davies and his lovely bride Janet, as well as all the volunteers who made the PENSACOLA- TO-HAVANA RACE a great success. Kudos to the winners, as well as those who persevered through some bad weather to get to Havana. We hope we will have a security system in place soon. Thanks to P/C Ron Bruce and Club Manager Scott Segers for staying on top of that. We are in great financial shape. All areas are ahead of budget for 2017, and overall, all expenses are below budget. This is a compliment to our staff and to our wonder CPA Tim Kane, who demonstrates his financial finesse month-after-month. We re always working on improving member value and member involvement. Please pitch in if you have any ideas or want to volunteer. As always, we ask our members to report to the Membership Committee, or to the staff, any person who might like to join the South s Finest Yacht Club. See page 5 for more details of the Five-Year Strategic Plan. PAGE 3 JIB SHEET

4 VICE COMMODORE S COMMENTS Linda Brent Meet Pensacola Yacht Club s Newest Members! Welcome New Members Pensacola Yacht Club welcomed six new members and one corporate member change in the month of May. Transitional Members Harry Fredriksen IV. Harry is the operations administrator for Hyundai Glovis in Mobile. Look for Harry and his wife, Hannah, enjoying our beautiful coastal waters in their Century 2200 Center Console powerboat. Harry is also looking forward to learning to sail. Social Members Harrison Harry Wilder: Harry is retired, and he formerly owned and operated McDonald s franchises. He and his wife, Jill, are Gulf Breeze residents. They enjoy fishing and cruising on their 31 Jupiter powerboat, Mac Attack. Daniel Grace: Dan is a retired industrial psychologist. His many friends at PYC encouraged him to join them as a member. Eric Gleaton: Eric is a prominent realtor in Pensacola and owner of Eric Gleaton Realty. He and his wife, Marilyn, look forward to all of the boating and social activities offered at Pensacola Yacht Club. Legacy Members Carlos Godinez: Carlos is an architect with STOA Architects in Pensacola. He and his wife, Brooke, and their beautiful little girl, Noelle Jane, can often be seen dining at PYC with her parents, Dr. David Chandler and his wife, Jeannette. Mollie Andrae: Mollie joins PYC as a legacy of Suellen and the late James McCreary. She is an instructor at Pensacola State College. She and her husband, Chad, and their children, Luke and Mollie Sue, can be found enjoying time on the water in their Cobia 237 center console. Corporate Members Perrie Renfroe: Perrie replaces Edward Spears, Bechtol Ind. Perrie formerly worked as an interior designer and is active in kayaking and sailing. Resignations: In the month of May, there were six resignations and one member, formerly on leave-of-absence status, who will not be returning. CONDOLENCES I am sad to report the deaths of two of our long time members, Mrs. William Troendle and Mrs. William Broughton. Many of us remember former member Rick Lawrence whose wife, Christine, also passed away this month. We offer our most sincere condolences to the families of these three ladies who all spent many happy times at PYC. Please give all our newest members a warm PYC welcome when you see them at the Club! 5 FROM OUR REAR COMMODORE & SATORI FOUNDATION PRESIDENT Denis McKinnon Now that the upstairs has new carpet and we have a Heritage room that we can be proud of (by the way, it is a great place for intimate dinner parties), we are embarking on renovating the Lighthouse Room, the women s entrance bathroom, the men s bathroom, and repairing all of the windows upstairs. These initiatives are underway and should be completed by the first of July. The pool is another matter. I am not sure where this stands, but hopefully, by the time you read this, a solution will be presented to the Board. Effort is being placed on cleaning up the east end of our property so that boat storage and ownership will be resolved and the beach will look much better. The Junior Clubhouse will be painted, and the general cleanliness of the interior is being addressed. The season has started, and our dance card is full, thanks to Marguerite/Tim Burr and our great crew of captains and instructors! PYC Satori continues to be a shining light for our Club, and as we anticipate the arrival of our new sailing instructor, you will see additional quality programs which will offer opportunities for Club Members to utilize Satori assets, to learn to sail, to check out boats, and to volunteer. FIVE-YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN In seeking to develop a long-term, continuous plan-of-action for our Club, Commodore Reeves consulted with idgroup, a well-known, Pensacola-based, branding and change management firm. Idgroup works with organizations seeking a forward-thinking, continuous plan for improvement and development over the long term, without the inherent shifts from year-to-year, as leadership shifts from commodore to commodore. The firm defines itself as a collaborative, creative team committed to using our talents to help clients succeed economically while having a positive impact on their organizations. Their mission is to engage stakeholders in building visionary organizations and enhancing reputation. This process results in clarity around an organization s image, identity and culture. Below is how idgroup understands the Pensacola Yacht Club. In their words, Since its founding in 1908, the Pensacola Yacht Club has been a gathering spot for sailing and boating enthusiasts. Like all social organizations, it has seen seasons of growth punctuated by interludes of decline. Over the past several years a dedicated team of leaders has given the club a shot of energy the club needed to catapult it out of just such as period of decline. Today the organization is on an upward trend. An infusion of members representing new generations of the community, plans to expand and improve facilities, and a growing and active youth program has produced new excitement. In addition, the club has embraced its responsibility to the community by launching the PYC Satori Foundation which seeks to impact the community beyond its membership. Its outreach efforts bring educational and training programs for the sports of sailing and yachting, for seamanship and for marine education to people who may not otherwise have an opportunity to experience these activities. Now that PYC is stabile and growing, we owe it to our members be forward-looking. Idgroup recommends achieving this goal by engaging the membership in answering the following question: How does the Pensacola Yacht Club reinforce the position of The Finest Yacht Club in the South? Using this question to guide our conversations, idgroup will engage a diverse group of up to 14 people in charting a course forward. Building on what emerges from this dialogue, the idgroup team will deliver a Strategic Plan that captures the strengths of the Pensacola Yacht Club and its vision of the future - a story that is both inspirational and aspirational communicating the best intentions of the organization. The plan s focus will provide a longer term view of PYC s objectives, while tactics will focus on nearer term actions related to each of the areas of focus. (More details will be made available, and I will be pleased to talk further about this concept with any and all interested members. Your Commodore.) PAGE 5 JIB SHEET

6 ENTERTAINMENT Nicole Ferry Although there was Mexican fare including Margaritas, Corona beer, & tequila shots all day, the actual Cinco de Mayo fiesta year was held in the evening with a great Mexican banquet. Entertainment was provided by Gulf Breeze School of Music led by Rachael Richter. Our Croquet on the Lawn, Derby style, was amazing. Thanks to Charlie & Melanie Doremus, Hal & Sally Smith, and Claire Rees for helping me organize the event. Who knew croquet could be so much fun! If you are interested in playing croquet at PYC, please contact me! Lastly, I leave you to look forward to our annual July 4th Celebration. There will be waterslides and Bluegrass, along with many other features. Don t miss it! There will be a flyer for times and pricing. Don t forget to bring your lawn chairs to watch the fireworks! Kentucky Derby Style & Croquet on the Lawn Claire! There are children around! Stop talking derby! A couple of ever-elegant doctors! 7 SHIP S LOG Renovated Heritage Room Congratulations to Jenny Streckel for renovating the PYC Heritage Room! Since our centennial celebration 10 years ago, its collection of archives and décor have been neglected. Now, through the efforts of Jenny and her friend Sandy Watley, the room looks beautiful and once again proudly displays much of the history of Pensacola Yacht Club. In 1997, Past Commodore Chuck Smith initiated the concept of a room in the clubhouse to display some of the amazing artifacts that recall our history. With the enthusiastic and diligent help of Bill Broughton and generous donations from the Nobles and Pace families, the Captain Bill Broughton Heritage Room became a reality. And now, Jenny has given the area a muchneeded facelift. On display is the American flag that flew over the first PYC clubhouse. It was eventually replaced as more states joined the Union and the Club purchased a new flag with 48 stars. There is also the iconic starting cannon JUNE TRIVIA Can you name this well-traveled & very popular captain? HINT: This member has raced at both MACH 2 and at 2 knots. The first to correctly identify our June trivia star, wins a bottle of wine. If you think you know, the answer to: Dave.antares@gmail.com. Dave Hoffman donated to PYC in 1916 by Southern YC members, who cruised and raced here annually for the coveted Garic Cup. They so appreciated the hospitality of our members that they included an engraved poem to the Pensacola boys. We have a photo of three PYC men hanging onto the side of a Fish Class boat. Captain Dave Witherill, Joe Marques and Bill Lurton were the only ones to keep their boat upright during a terrible storm that ripped through the course during the 1933 Lipton Cup in St Petersburg. And, my favorite collection is that of the framed photos of members stately power yachts, some over 100 ft in length, that once graced Pensacola Bay. I encourage you to take a few minutes to check out these treasures from our past in their beautifully renovated setting. If you have something to donate that relates to our Club s history, then please contact Jim Warwick or Dave Hoffman. Thanks to Jenny, we now have room to display more items than ever before! MAY TRIVIA RESULTS Last month s trivia photo was of Past Commodore Ron Bruce, taken during a long ago Dauphin Island Race. Although Ron was an avid PYC racer and has many Key West Race Week regattas on his resume aboard the 40 Olsen named Forerunner, he is most recognized today as a long distance cruiser. His first Gulf crossing was in 1972, with three kids and a wife aboard a 26 sloop! In the 1990 s, he cruised his beloved Morgan 43 named Footloose to Nova Scotia and spent years anchoring around the Caribbean. The culmination of Ron s wanderlust was his 7½ year circumnavigation of our planet with his wife, and he says admiral, Joanne aboard their 42 catamaran Miss Jody. CONGRATULATIONS to last month s winner of the Trivia Contest, Bernie Knight, who correctly identified Ron Bruce. PAGE 7 JIB SHEET

They are practicing starts, mark rounding, tacking drills and tactics. Racing may not be for everyone, but it does provide a venue to increase sailing ability quickly. The racers get out on the course in conditions from really light air to heavy air. They don t wait until the conditions are perfect. If you are or know of anyone who is interested in getting young members on the water, please contact me by at SSmith@sdace.com or Bert Rice by cell at You can also contact us on Facebook. If one does not know to which port one is sailing, no wind is favorable Seneca PYC SEMINAR SERIES Neil Thorsen June Seminar: Our speaker for our June 20th, 6:00 PM seminar will be Ms. Rebekah Bydlak. She graduated Pensacola Junior College (when it was still PJC, not PSC!) and earned her bachelor s and master s degrees from the University of West Florida. She is the executive director of the Coalition to Reduce Spending, the only national organization focused only on reducing spending and debt! As manager of Organizational Development and Strategy, she serves as spokesperson for the Coalition, oversees programs, and manages daily written communications. The Coalition recently launched SpendingTracker.org, the first-ever tool to track every vote for federal spending in real time. She will also talk about the potential for new technology (like this tool), to better connect people with their elected officials and disrupt old policy challenges. Seminars will be discontinued during the summer months, so watch the JibSheet for the next scheduled program. Last Month s Seminar: May 16, 2017 Mr. Ratchford (in full uniform) Mr. Tommy Ratchford, in full dress uniform, presented a fascinating program about Captain James Waddell and the CSS Shenandoah. He provided an actual reenacment of the ship s final lowering of her flag in Liverpool, England, in PAGE 14 JIB SHEET
