COMMODORE S COMMENTS The Club was a bevy of activity in September, with the Ladies Dinner Dance and United States Optimist Dinghy Association s Southeastern Championships. Scores of volunteers from our Club, as well as the community, rolled out the red carpet for the young sailors competing. The weather was wet, but the hospitality warm! Many thanks to all who volunteered, and a very special thanks to Regatta Chair P/C Alan McMillan and PRO P/C John Matthews. By all accounts, it was a very successful regatta! The Ladies Dinner Dance was a great success. My husband, Ian, along with his very accomplished Committee pulled out all the stops for this fabulous event. From the food, to the games, to the band, all were superb. This could not have been done without the hard work and support of many dedicated PYC women. Thank you for the long hours of soliciting donations, organizing bidding paddles, making posters, decorating, selling tickets, etc. Your efforts did not go unnoticed!! Thank you!! And speaking of red carpets, the Hospitality Committee once again sponsored a very successful Ladies Fashion Show and Luncheon. The ladies of PYC and guests enjoyed a delicious lunch prepared by Chef Artie while enjoying the latest in Fall fashions from Belk. Thank you to the Hospitality Committee and Co-Chairs Linda Oyler and Quinlyn Bray for this enjoyable luncheon for our Ladies. And thank you to the Hospitality Committee for their generous matching funds to allow us the opportunity to install much needed solar tinting for our south facing windows in the Clubhouse. This will result in lower energy costs. Not only that, this year alone, the Hospitality Committee is responsible for installing an upstairs bathroom and providing for our kitchen needs. They also volunteer for the Friday night drawings. All proceeds from the split ticket sales are used for Club enhancement. Interested in volunteering to sell split tickets on Friday Nights? Please contact Ann Owczarczak. The first weekend in October, Randy and Kim Ray will sponsor the Lost Bay raft up. Held in conjunction with the Point Yacht Club s Lost Bay Regatta, this popular raft up will take place at Barber s Marina. Easily accessible by land or water, this raft up appeals to everyone. Join the group for the cookout on Saturday evening, or for Bloodies and Mimosas on Sunday morning! For more information, contact Kim or Randy. Thank you to all PYC members who recently attended the Living Shores meeting at Sanders Beach. Funds are in place to create a living shoreline in the area east of our waterfront. It is vitally important for us, as PYC members, to participate in meetings and discussions that will redefine and/or shape our neighboring waters. We will be paying close attention to the proposed changes. And speaking of PYC s environment, have you seen our new reclaimed beachfront? P/C Alan McMillan and George Gamble spent multiple hours installing a culvert and moving sand to create a beautiful, useful beach. This effort was supported by the USEPA who is taking steps to remediate and fill the eastside ditch. Many, many thanks to Alan, George, and the scores of volunteers who groomed the beach to make it what it is today. Well done!!! On a sad note, we lost two treasured members last month. Our deepest condolences to Corinne Swann on the death of her beloved husband, Al Swann. Al enjoyed all Club activities and will be missed in the Grill Room and Club dances. Past Commodore Bill Bolyard passed in South Florida in early September. The Florida Commodore s Association will be holding a memorial service on Sunday, October 20 from 2-3 p.m. in the Club ballrooms. Have you ever considered a more active participation in Club leadership? Commodore Emeritus Jere Allen is seeking members who would like to volunteer for Board of Director positions for The Nominating Committee will be interviewing in early October. Sign up now to volunteer. The poster is located outside the Grill Room door. See you around the Club! SUSAN MCKINNON October 13 Page 3

VICE COMMODORE S COMMENTS BOB DAWKINS This month PYC welcomes two new members: Former members Edmond and Cyndi Holt have rejoined the Club as Social members. They enjoy both sailing and power boating. Ed is an attorney in Pensacola. David Eames is the President of Custom Earpiece and lives in Aurora, CO. He joined as a Non-resident member. He races a Tripp 26 and now keeps it in our dry storage. He also has a Sea Pro 23 and is a former member of Fort Walton Yacht Club. In spite of a rainy weekend last month, PYC was a bustling place the weekend the USODA Southeastern Championship. This is the kind of energy and activity that makes PYC such a special place that can attract young adults. Our membership categories revised last year have allowed us to again recruit young adults and, just as important as recruitment is finding a way to retain them as they age out of the Transitional membership. To that effort, Caroline McKay is restarting the Centerboarders group which will be active on the PYC website will soon. As you may recall this group organized activities especially for the young adults within our Club. A question occasionally arises related to marina or dry storage privileges for Social members. Although Social members cannot lease marina or dry storage slips, they do have all other privileges in the marina or dry storage. That includes launching a boat on the ramp or with the hoist and short term stays in the marina or dry storage. For all membership categories, short term stays in the marina or dry storage are free for one night and then are charged a per diem rate of $1 per foot per night in the marina and $5 per night in dry storage. FROM REAR COMMODORE BEN MYERS I hope this issue finds you and your family doing well. I don t have a lot to report this month. However, as Commodore McKinnon, Treasure Dan Smithson, and the Finance Committee continue working hard to bank cash, you will see continued improvements around the property. It is good to see our financial condition improve. You can help by recruiting new members, using the Club, and sponsoring groups to use our facility for company parties or civic functions. ATTENTION PYC CLUB MEMBERS 2014 BOARD AND FLAG OFFICER POSITIONS ARE NOW OPEN FOR NOMINATIONS The 2014 PYC Nominating Committee Past Commodores Sam Foreman, Roger Moraski and Jere Allen along with Club Members Jim Oyler and Walt Smith encourage members to consider serving on the PYC Board of Directors. There is a signup sheet in the PYC lobby for the various Board and Flag Officer positions. Those members who are interested in meeting with the Nominating Committee should sign up for an interview. These interviews will be held at the Club from 6pm to 8:30pm on the evenings of October 8, 9 and 10. Page 4 October 13

HOSPITALITY Every family has traditions and events that they repeat year after year. These traditions give us all a sense of place and community. There is no better place than PYC to create family memories and enjoy special occasions. Invited your friends or family to dine with you on the deck at the Club or simply meet for drinks and fellowship. The weather is fantastic and the view awesome! We are in the countdown toward the end of the year and many more PYC events are on the horizon. In November PYC will host their annual Thanksgiving Buffet. It will be bountiful and the best part of making a reservation for you and your family is there is no cooking or cleaning up for Mom. After Thanksgiving Club members gather for the annual Decorate the Club for Christmas Pot Luck. Always the Monday after Thanksgiving it gets you in the holiday spirit. All you need is a jolly holly attitude and a dish or bucket of fried chicken to share after all the work is done. Our seasonal parties begin the first of December with the Annual Commodore s Ball ending with the New Year s Eve formal. Pick out a party dress and guys dust off your tucks, we are going to bring the house down. Oh I almost forgot the annual holiday boat parade and Marina Christmas Party for casual fun for everyone. Stay tuned for dates and times. MEMBER CHANNEL MARKERS Congratulations to Betsy Whitehurst on the birth of PYC s newest Junior Sailor, Neil David. He was born at the rise of the Harvest Moon on September 19. Commodore Susan (Mimi) and Ian McKinnon were over the moon with happiness as they welcomed the arrival of this precious little boy to their ever growing family. This past summer PYC members Jim and Joanne Matthews aboard their S/V Heather and David and Cindra Anderson aboard their S/V Second Wind cruised Maine together. They enjoyed all the wonderful towns and villages and many remote anchorages, surrounded by spruce and fir and craggy granite ledges. To the right are a few photos of their Maine adventure: Joanne and Cindra enjoying a typical Maine meal in Belfast, ME, a photo of quintessential Maine, and an inhabitant of Mt. Desert Island Maine. GWEN HERRIN & JEAN FLEEGE To All Who Volunteered, Attended & Supported Casino Royale Ladies Dinner Dance Thank You!!! By Ian McKinnon I would like to take a moment to thank all those who served on the various event committees. As always, there are folks who work tirelessly, and give freely of their time and talents. I would personally like to thank: Erin and Bob Dawkins, Barbara Wade and Dave Norfleet, Renee and Bob Sutton, Jean Fleege and Linda Whitman, E.J. and Dana Jackson, Tom and Carol Patterson, Innes Richards, Gloria McMillan, Marguerite Burr, Karen Allen, Estelle Kirschner and Betsy Moraski. A huge thank you, as well, to all of our sponsors, those who donated incredible items and of course to our own Jim Warwick, Scott Segers, and all of the PYC Staff! Everyone provided a sterling example of dedication and professionalism with many hours of work. Of course the evening would have been for naught without all of our members and guests; thanks so much for supporting our Club. As announced at the event, proceeds will be used to purchase items to help our Club earn more funds from banquet, wedding and ballroom rentals. Finally, thanks to all of my great friends, nothing is successful without you! Fair winds and Following Seas October 13 Page 5

Cruising Couples Regatta didn t have a very good turn out this year, so I guess there must be some trouble in paradise all over the bay. I hope that the participation changes for the PYC #1 race at the end of September. However, the Chappell/Stitt Regatta had a great turn out. Junior Sailor Savannah Baus was first overall in the Opti Fleet of the Chappell/ Stitt Junior Regatta. She was also the highest placing PYC Junior Sailor in the USODA SE Championship. Congrats Savannah!! I would like to give a personal Thank You to the PYC Membership for opening the doors and letting in over 150 Junior Sailors and their families use the South s Finest Yacht club for USODA Southeastern Championship Regatta. The weekend started with a trip to the National Flight Academy on Friday morning and again in the afternoon for the participants. We then moved into the weekend and the rain came with it, although Saturday we achieved two Green Fleet races and one full Red, White, and Blue Championship race before the weather turned threatening. We brought all the racers in to be on the safe side. After some time consulting and watching the weather, the decision was made to stay ashore and start earlier in the morning on Sunday. The beginning of Sunday was nice with good wind and no rain but that would not last. The rain that has been with us for most of the summer started and we all got wet! However this didn t slow the racers down at all, the Green Fleet completed four races, and the Red, White, and Blue completed three full races. After the racing was complete we all had hotdogs and ice cream while we waited for the awards banquet to begin. It took a little longer to get to the awards because of a protest, but when that was worked out it was a great banquet. If there was any doubt in anyone s mind that we could pull this off a national regatta, it was put to rest on Thursday as the club was prepped and ready to go for the weekend. On Friday as all the volunteers started showing up, I could really see it coming together. I watched this process from seven months ago to the finish and cannot name all of the volunteers to thank, but I do have to name three principals. The Regatta Chair, Alan McMillan, did an outstanding job as the organizer of the Regatta; John Matthews as the PRO for the Championship course made it all happen on the water; and Talbot Wilson, for leading the publicity campaign. Thank you to you and all the volunteers that made this weekend one for the books. It could have not been any better. Two more big Regattas are scheduled for this month Page 6 October 13 FLEET CAPTAIN S REPORT BOB SUTTON the WFORC on October 11 thru 13, and the Schreck October 19, both are GYA events so put them on your calendar. 7 WOW, what a weekend, 150 eight to fifteen year old Opti Junior Sailors on Pensacola Bay! When you count the parents, coach s, boy scouts, 88 club volunteers and regular club members at PYC for the weekend, approximately 600 people participated or were spectators at the Club. This was the second largest regatta ever held at our club. In 2000, PYC held the Opti National Championship with about 200 young sailors and we again showed that our club, The South s Finest Yacht Club is the very best at staging such major events. On Friday, September 20, we saw 25 children and their parents lining up in the parking lot at 7:15am to take the Seville Trolley to NAS for a private tour of the National Flight Academy. The children and their parents were awed by the experience. Thanks to Claire Rees for leading this effort. Practice day on Friday saw Chamber of Commence beautiful weather. With rain on Saturday and again on Sunday, we did not see the sun again until after the trophy presentations. The rain did not deter our PRO John Matthews and Race Committee or the children from outstanding racing and fierce competition. Every child or parent I met fell in love with Pensacola and are excited about the prospect of returning to PYC for future sailing events. My thanks to everyone would be far too long for this article, but a very special thanks must go out to our sponsors and financial benefactors. Our partnerships with the County Commission, the Pensacola Sports Association, and Visit Pensacola were key to our success. With more than 90% of the competitors from out of town the economic impact to Pensacola was in the $1,000,000 range. Our successful fundraising and sponsorship program led by Talbot and Virginia Wilson resulted in leaving the club in a stronger financial position. We have a fantastic new beach on the east end of our property and momentum to continue to work with our EPA partner to complete the ditch remediation in As Julie Connereley our media coordinator said, So much happened this weekend, we could have a special edition of the Jib Sheet, just to show it all. Please go to our website and see all the great photographs and videos for this event. BY ALAN C MCMILLAN, REGATTA CHAIRMAN & LORRIE BERRY, REGATTA VICE CHAIRMAN October 13 Page 7

CRUISER S CORNER Once again the Weatherman played havoc with our planned raft up. After the rain chance increased from 80% to 95% with frequent squalls the decision was made to cancel plans for a tailgate party on the beach. Many of our usual cruisers did spend the weekend on the water in the rain participating in the USODA Southeastern Championship Regatta. It was quite a site to see over 100 Optis racing on our bay. JIM & LINDA OYLER Our next raft up will be a Barber s Marina in conjunction with Point Yacht Club s Lost Bay Regatta on October 5 and 6. This has become one of the larger fun regattas on the coast but you do not have to race to enjoy the fun. There will be an awards presentation, live music, and a fish fry after the race. Slips at Barber s are $25.00 per night, water and electricity included and the fish fry dinner is $15.00 per person. We will have our usual bring a dish Sunday brunch before we start home. Call Barber s Marina at for slip reservations. Be sure to tell them you are with the Lost Bay Regatta to get the special rate. This raft up is also accessible by land yacht so come for the parties even if you don t have a boat. 12 Page 12 October 13 FCYC REPORT The September Florida Council of Yacht Clubs meeting was held on the 14th at The Florida Yacht Club (FYC), which is located on the St. John s River in Jacksonville. FYC was organized in 1876 and is the oldest yacht club in Florida. The current location, built in 1928, is the third for FYC. The first location was lost in Jacksonville s great fire of Their members and staff offered a very warm welcome to all the FCYC participants. We re sure you d enjoy visiting there, even by land yacht. Ethanol 15 (increasing from 10% in gasoline) continues to be an issue. The U.S. Senate and House now each have bills (S1195 and HR1462, respectively) to restrict or eliminate ethanol content in gasoline, which is known to create problems in engines. This is of particular concern to boaters using gasoline. The FCYC has two Fleet Captains: One for the East Coast and one for the West Coast. Each division has an annual competition for the most clubs visited by boat and the greatest distance traveled by boat. The mileage chart between clubs in the back of the FCYC guide contains a few errors, which are now being corrected for There is a log for competing boaters to maintain, which is available on the FCYC website. You may recall that PYC members Henry and Pauline Pearson won the Florida West Coast Yachtsman of the Year Award for the most miles traveled in Perhaps PYC can take the trophy home again! The guest speaker was Tim Monahan, a member of FYC, who gave an inspiring presentation about FYC s very successful racing in the last New York Yacht Club s Invitational Cup Regatta. The only other FCYC Club that has been invited in the past is the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. The Invitational Cup is a biennial event in Newport, Rhode Island, in September. It is a regatta for yacht clubs from around the world and has become an important Corinthian (amateur) competition. Twenty yacht club teams from 13 countries and five continents competed in this year s competition. Interested in becoming an alternate PYC representative for FCYC? We need one! It is a great opportunity to visit many yacht clubs throughout the state and meet a lot of great, friendly people. The host club always puts forth a first class event too. The meetings are every other month. The next FCYC meeting will be on November 9 th at the Naples Sailing & Yacht Club. PYC members with reciprocity privileges are always welcome to join us for future FCYC meetings. For more information, contact Randy Ray at randalray@me.com. RANDY & KIM RAY

PYC Seminar Series RANDY RAY & NEIL THORSEN The topic for September s meeting was anchor types and anchoring techniques. It was well attended. Our guest speaker was Tom Vandiver, who also presented the July seminar on marine hurricane preparation. Tom has delivered numerous presentations for West Marine, the U.S. Power Squadron and other venues. We hope to have him back again. October s presentation will be Miss Jody s Adventures. Past Commodore Ron Bruce and his wife Joanne will share details about their seven plus year voyage circumnavigating the globe covering 40,000 miles. This is a chance to hear about an experience few of us will be lucky enough to have. It will be on October 15 at 6pm in the main ballroom. Don t miss this one! November 19 s presentation will be by author Phil Thompson. Phil s fishing reports, articles, and short histories appear in Florida Sportsman, Gaff and Coastal Angler magazines. His presentation will be about his adventures in Cuba, with a focus on its angling and diving opportunities. It will include a virtual tour spanning the island from Havana to Holguin, with stops in the ancient seaside city of Trinidad de Cuba and journeys into the lush mountains of Sancti Spiritus. The program highlights the lakes, mountain streams, rivers, flats and reefs of Cuba plus the famous blue marlin fishery in the shadow of the Morro Castle guarding Havana Harbor. This should be a great opportunity to see Cuba without making the trip! Questions and suggestions for topics can be directed to either Neil Thorsen at nthorsen@cox.net or Randy Ray at randalray@me.com. 2FWREHU 3DJH
